Really conflicted about this as it did give an incredibly insightful overview of Jewish history and into the modern day.
I think broadly speaking it did a great job of only giving facts. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t any real attention paid to significant areas of concern in the modern state of Israel.
From memory there was no real mention of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and what that means under international law and for the peace process in the Levant.
Moreover, the image portrayed of Israel as a multicultural democratic haven in the Middle East is perhaps a bit naive. Whilst Israel has made great strides on LGBTQ issues, and more; Can a country which has roughly 3m in its territory, subject to its policy, unable to vote call itself a democracy?
Note: As. a Jewish Man, I know these issue is deeply nuanced and contentious. I am aware there will be significant gaps in my knowledge and hope that my view doesn’t offend anyone with alternative views❤️
This is a well researched and informative introduction to the remarkable history of the Jewish people. It follows the Jews from Old Testament times through the Greek and Roman periods through Ottoman rule on through the Renaissance and up to more recent history. It is a story of tremendous achievement…and even more amazing resilience of a people under constant pressure. There are moving sections on the Holocaust and its effects on the Jewish people as well as the establishment of Israel and how that has played out up through today. It even as discussion of the current war…although I am a little more skeptical of some of the numbers quoted there since the author doesn’t have the benefit of history to confirm accuracy of numbers. All in all…the is a well researched and very thorough study that shows the development and impact of the Jewish people. It is well worth the read and very relevant.
This is an ambitious undertaking going back to Iron age then the Bronze Age and the period of the United Monarchy (King David, King Solomon), the separation into the northern and southern kingdoms, the exile and on and on up through the recent attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip by Hamas. It is just amazing to me that a little area, the size of a postage stamp, at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea has been the source of so many wars and so much controversy.
The book however does as good a job of explaining the reasons why as I have ever read and it is clear that the authors did their homework and the necessary research to produce a very credible history of the Jewish people, It is also a balanced story (in my opinion) which also lends to it credibility.
This is an excellent book that explains Jewish life, history, culture, and its place in history. The author has divided different periods of Jewish history to explain the significance of each, while also describing how the Jews responded to external forces that impacted them. This story highlights the resilience of the Jewish people throughout history.
The complex history of the Jewish people is explained in segments that make it easier to understand and analyze. My only criticism was the use of generalizations instead of concrete examples. Perhaps they thought it would make the book too long. This is well-written and easy to understand. The analysis is absorbing and insightful. Overall score = 4.5 stars.
It was nice to learn more about my ancestry. Some I knew, some I didn't. Considering the current state of events, the knowledge contained is well needed, just to give some perspective and fair points involving both sides. Although, I was glad the current war was not the main subject. This is a perfect collection to broaden your history knowledge of the middle east.
