People Will Talk

Rate this book
Kieran Scott brings her distinctive prose to this breathlessly suspenseful novel that combines Glass Onion with Big Little Lies as three women are implicated in a murder after a wedding goes horribly wrong.

When the Frank family throws their annual clambake at their gorgeous beachside home on Cape May, the seafood is always delivered to white-clothed tables on fine bone china. And Peter Frank, the beloved son and perennial heartbreaker, will make the rounds, charming every woman on the guest list.

Top of that list this year are Maya, his tennis star girlfriend just coming off the high of winning Wimbledon; Catherine, his high school sweetheart turned wildly successful wedding planner and influencer; and Leanne, the fiercely protective aunt and legal guardian of his only son. When Maya, Catherine, and Leanne arrive expecting an extravagant feast, they’re instead lured into a room together by a mysterious text to find Peter and…Tilly.

Tilly, all golden blonde hair and perfectly tan skin, explains to the three women that she and Peter plan to get married that night, that Maya and Peter are through, that Peter will no longer be investing in Catherine’s company, and that Leanne must give up guardianship of her nephew. The enraged women attend the impromptu wedding, but when a chandelier falls and crushes the bride, suddenly they’re three likely suspects with three perfect motives. Now they’ll have to work together to figure out who really did kill Tilly, and fast—because maintaining a good reputation in this crowd can be murder.

It wouldn’t be SUMMER without the Frank family’s annual clambake!

There are alway crashing waves, flowing champagne 🥂 and a BIG announcement. But, no announcement has ever been BIGGER than the one made THIS year!

It turns out-there is going to be an impromptu wedding at the clambake-Peter Frank will be marrying a gorgeous heiress named Tilly-NOT Maya-his tennis star girlfriend who has just arrived after winning Wimbledon-

and he hasn’t even bothered to let Maya know that she would be attending his wedding to someone else.

Also invited, his high school sweetheart Catherine, now a successful wedding planner and influencer and Leanne, his only son Hudson’s Aunt and legal guardian.

“MEET ME IN MY ROOM AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT”

Lured by a text, the three women are gathered together so Tilly can explain that not only will Peter be marrying her instead of Maya, but he also will no longer be investing in Catherine’s company, and that Leanne must now give up guardianship of her nephew, as Tilly plans to raise him with his father.

But when a CHANDELIER falls and CRUSHES the bride, the three women suddenly realize that they have just been set up to be the most likely suspects in a murder-each with a strong motive!

The question is “WHO was actually RUTHLESS enough to kill Tilly?” (Though, I also wondered, what all of these women saw in Peter!! 🤔)

Although I didn’t enjoy this one as much as her previous books, “Wish You Were Gone” and “Regrets Only”, readers who LOVE a good sudsy SOAP OPERA should enjoy this!

There are plenty of suspects in attendance, and with the many cover-ups, I kept changing my mind on who was responsible although ultimately I did guess correctly.

And, be sure to enlarge and take a look at the enticing GORGEOUS book cover!

3.5⭐️ If you need a beachy thriller, look no further. This rich celebs behaving badly meets locked room mystery is entertaining as all get out. There is a huge ensemble cast, so pro tip - take notes to keep everything straight.

🎧 With such a large group of characters, a full cast audio is essential, and Austenne Grey, Cindy Kay and Dana Wing Lau offer pitch perfect narration for each of the main characters.

3 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my first book by this author. While I enjoyed the writing style and the quick chapters, the storyline fell a bit flat for me and I found it kind of boring at times.

The synopsis sounded really interesting. Glass Onion meets Big Little Lies. Three women are in a heap of trouble after a murder at a wedding. What sounds boring about that?

I feel like some characters weren’t developed very well and the reveal was just so-so for me. I’d be willing to give this author another shot.

What a delightful read!

Three Women: 3POVs. One murder. And a fucking Man. Fucking Peter.

Woman1: Catharine. A 34 years old successful wedding planner. The oldest female friend of Peter and the woman who was his girlfriend through out college.
(I love you Cat. I sympathize with your pathetic ways ^_^)

Woman2: Maya. A 25 Famous tennis player. She's Peter's current girlfriend. They bought the ring and they're waiting to announce the marriage after she wins Wimbledon.
(Also she's the daughter of a Mob-Boss!!!)

Woman3: Leanne. A middle class bakery owner. She's raising Peter's only son after her sister (suspicious) death. She loves the kid to pieces and wants to get full custody.

All those women's dreams and lives came crashing down when they were invited to Peter's family estate just so they discover that Perter is marrying a socialite bitch!!!

I have this particular taste about "Thriller/ Mystery/ Crime" books: I want romance in them. Only that would keep me engaged and this book delivered.
But aside from that satisfaction the plot is perfect and the writing style is easy and at the same time entertaining.
I wish I can find friends who are willing to dissect this with me.
We could go fully unhinged on the ending! I liked the end but I wanted more crazy sociopathic stuff to happen!!!

This was such a juicy and fun thriller, really great for a summer type of read. Despite it being about murder it has that light and gossipy feel that I like in a summer read. You hear from three women in alternating POVs, Catherine, Maya and Leanne as they arrive at an annual clambake to be told it’s actually Peter’s wedding, surprise! Catherine is his old girlfriend, Maya is his current girlfriend and Leanne is coparenting her nephew with Peter. So plenty of drama for sure and then the wedding ends in murder and I think that’s all you need to know. While a couple parts were predictable I thought there were still some surprises in the end and for a whodunnit style read it was fun and entertaining.

A twisty, messy murder mystery with rich people??? Say less. This was so fun and kept me hooked. I finished it in less than 12 hours!! This was fast paced and super entertaining with the most messy, ridiculous characters. Everything was so twisted up and everyone was so intertwined with each other that I truly had no idea where it was going. So many secrets, lies, and betrayals. I had a great time!!

Drama. Deceit. Hidden pasts. Read this book for all the tea.

Every year the Frank family hosts a clam bake, but this year’s festivities look a little different. Rather than a clam bake, it turns into their son’s surprise wedding. This comes as a shock to his famous girlfriend, the mother of his child’s sister, and his high school love.

Told in all of these women’s POVs, you aren’t sure whose side of the story to trust until the end. Would definitely recommend for fans of dramatic thrillers!

Honestly what is the appeal of Peter he sucked and I’m mad that Maya stayed with him. At least I didn’t 100% hate the women but I also didn’t really like them

This story is primarily about three women who are in one way or another attached to a man named Peter Frank. The Frank family is very wealthy, and they are about to host their annual clambake (which is more like a brown tie dinner party). What they didn’t tell the guests until they got there is that this wasn’t just a clambake, it was also going to be a wedding. Peter is going to marry a socialite, Tilly, but there’s a problem - he’s already engaged, his fiancé was invited, and she, as well as the other two women, got texts asking them to meet them in Peter’s room after the wedding announcement.

So who are these women? Catherine is a party planner who dated Peter over a decade earlier. They have remained good friends though, and she is dating someone else. Maya is a pro tennis player who just won Wimbledon, and is the fiancé of Peter…until the announcement of him marrying Tilly. Finally, we have Leanne, who works at a bakery and raises her nephew, Hudson, with her husband Tony. Hudson is Peter’s son with her sister Monica, who suffered a young and untimely death. Peter isn’t cut out to be a single father, so Leanne took Hudson in after her sister died.

When the women go to Peter’s room after the announcement, Tilly is there to tell Catherine that Peter will no longer be investing in her business, to tell Leanne that they are adopting Hudson, and to tell Maya that her relationship with Peter is over. The wedding takes place, then the next morning, Tilly is dead - killed by the ostentatious chandelier she HAD to have - and Hudson is missing.

This was a great mystery - after Tilly’s little speech, all of the women have reason to want her dead. Their characters were all good, but Peter was the best - because soon, you’ll love to hate him. He’s immature, insensitive and unable to stand up to his mother, Camille. The ending comes with several shocks, none of which I saw coming. Who cut the rope to the chandelier and killed Tilly? Nobody I suspected, that’s for sure. If you like mystery, along with some thrills, this should be right up your alley! Four stars.

Told from the perspectives of Catherine, Maya, and Leanne, who all become likely suspects in the murder of Tilly, the bride at an impromptu wedding. It was a murder mystery but also light and fun at the same time, making it the perfect summer read. I thought I had this one all figured out but some unexpected twists and turns proved me wrong. This was a fun read! A good ‘whodunnit’ story that follows three possible women or should I say suspects? 😏 You get POV’s from all the women and they’re all rather likable. At one point, I was not feeling Catherine but by the end she had won me over again. 🤍 It had some unexpected surprises towards the end of the book and it hit me like a wrecking ball. I didn’t see any of it coming. Kieran does a great job “throwing off the scent” in my opinion. My first from this author and I’m so glad I found her. She will definitely be on my radar for future books and I plan on checking out her other one Regrets Only. ☺️

The book was drawn out and then “solved” during the last 30 pages. The motives were confusing and not explained very well because it was so rushed. I liked the 3 different perspectives in the book. Catherine bothered me because of how desperate she was for Peter’s attention. It was a very easy and light read however.

What an interesting thriller. A whodunnit sort of story that explored complexities of relationships with one another. Catherine, Maya, and Leanne all having alternate POV as well as motives. Lots of finger pointing and evidence, coverups and investigations. I thought I had it figured out just for the hots to keep coming. Great pace of the story, and man Peter was so unlikeable and Tilly sucked! Added a new word to my vocabulary as well: “sluiced”. Would definitely check out another book by this author!

People Will Talk scraped by as a middling beach read. The characters who were best developed were so annoying and obtuse that they were difficult to believe. As a mystery, it was not particularly effective, but it was farcical enough to be entertaining. Simply keeping up with the absurd, ham handed machinations of characters trying to deflect attention from or onto suspects was entertaining. "Breathlessly suspenseful" it was not and Peter wasn't the least bit charming. Had this been promoted as a tongue-in-cheek satire of a murder mystery, I would have given it a higher rating. Seriously, the bride is killed by a chandelier?! Between that, the Keystone Cops investigating the crime, a main character who can't keep his pants zipped and the ultimate finale to this whodunnit....well, it's definitely not a mystery that you can take seriously. It is an easy, low stakes read that you won't mind leaving on the plane or dropping in the pool (should you pick up a print copy). It's definitely not a book for your home library collection. It's entertaining as long as you don't expect a high level mystery/thriller and you can tolerate some annoying characters.

Kieran Scott is definitely one to watch in this cross between chick lit and mystery (more the latter than the former). We follow the perspectives of Leanne, Maya, and Catherine as they try to clear their names and work through their pasts. I was frustrated by, but ended up loving, Catherine, was surprised by Maya, and admired Leanne. Who I didn’t love? Peter… definitely would have liked to see more accountability there.
This was a lighter read, and I enjoyed the women’s dynamics as well as the gradually deepening mystery. Exactly the kind of vacation book I’d recommend for those who love suspense and a mix of romance or for someone on the go who wants to pick this back up after a busy few days and not feel like they missed a beat.

Thank you again for the ARC, Gallery Books. It is much appreciated and I enjoyed the read and the opportunity to share my feedback.

4 out of 5 Stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3 women are suspects in a murder. Maya, Catherine, and Leanna all received an invitation to the annual clambake at a beachside home on Cape May, hosted by the Frank family. But, it is more than just a clambake. It is a wedding. The wedding of Peter Frank and Tilly Dansforth. But how can that be? Peter isn’t engaged to Tilly, he was just dating Maya the day before.

When all 3 women are lured into a room with a mysterious text, they are surprised to find Peter and Tilly waiting for them. And for the announcement they have. Maya will no longer be dating Peter, Peter will stop investing in Catherine’s company immediately, and Leanna will have to give up full custody of her nephew as Peter wants to be in his life. Lastly, Peter and Tilly will be getting married that evening. With tensions high, Peter and Tilly end up getting married. But later that evening, the bride is crushed by a chandelier. Was it an accident? Or was it murder? There are 3 suspects that have a lot of motives.

“People Will Talk” by Kieran Scott was the first book I have read by this author! And I can’t wait to read more, especially because of how good “People Will Talk” was! This was a fast-paced thriller with lots of depth and interesting characters. The beginning of the book hooks you, with the announcement and murder taking place right away. It forces you to keep reading to uncover who the murderer really is. I really kept guessing until the very end. I just could not figure it out until the last moment.

I really enjoyed the premise of this novel. I thought it was very refreshing and thrilling. There are 3 perspectives in this novel which really propelled the book forward. The entire time you are asking who committed this murder! I really enjoyed the characters and figuring out the connection between all of them. They do have their quirks, but that is what makes the story just that more interesting.

I will say, I thought the last part of the book was a push. I can’t say I liked the ending as much as I liked the buildup. I was expecting a shocking twist that tied everything together. It also just felt kinda rushed.

Overall, I am rating this book 4.5 stars rounded down to 4. “People Will Talk” by Kieran Scott will be released on July 30th, 2024!

Thank you to Gallery Press, Kieran Scott, and Netgalley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

The author must hate women.

There isn't a single female in this book who isn't defined by her relationship with a man:

Maya, the tennis star, who is hysterical and over-wrought over her break-up with Peter.

Catherine, who fell in love with Peter when they were young, who really only thought about him ever, even now when he's broken up with one woman (Maya) and married another one (the murder victim), she still only cares about him, dreams about him, lives for him.

Finally there's Leanne, who is mainly only concerned about her nephew (Hudson, Peter's son) and her husband. She is the most relatable and sympathetic character. And the only female who isn't in love with Peter. That's probably why she's relatable and sympathetic.

Then there's Peter. (1) who's dating a woman at least 10 years younger than him (Maya), (2) who has a friend with benefits relationship with Catherine, (3) who has an 11yo son he never sees or really even cares about, (4) who's son is missing and he barely cares, (5) who's been sleeping with the murder victim, and (6) who's had relations with at least one other woman (barely 20yo).

Every single Catherine chapter is her doting on him, flirting with him, caring only about him.

And most of Maya's chapters, at least in the first half of the book, are about how she and Peter were soul mates, how devastated she is, etc.

That guy?

Yeah, this author very definitely hates women.

If you’re a fan of Big Little Lies and soap
operas, you’re going to love this one!

This is my first Kieran Scott read and what a wild ride! Here’s another perfect beach read that’s going to keep you guessing until the very end.

I love a good mystery whodunnit story told from multiple views points that’s fast paced and jam packed with drama. This was so bingey too with short chapters.

Maya, Katherine, and Leanne were well developed characters that I loved and also suspected in equal measure. Scotts writing really sucks you in and I found myself completely unaware of what was going on around me while I read this story. There are so many twists and turns!

I’m also a Jersey girl so I really, really enjoyed the Cape May setting. I wanted to be at the clambake so badly!

The themes of love, betrayal, and the lengths those will go to protect really captivated me. I love when a story is layered and makes you think. This story did that for me and I think it will for you too! Please reach out to me once you’ve finished so we can talk about Peter.

Im really looking forward to reading Scott’s backlist as if her other books are anything like this one I know I’m in for a real treat!

I have absolutely loved Scott’s two prior adult books, and was excited to have the opportunity to read her new one early. Unfortunately I binged it in a day, and now I have to wait awhile for her next killer read!

Peter Frank is rich, close to his family, and a total heartbreaker. When his ex, his current girlfriend, and the sister of his deceased baby mama are all invited to what turns out to be his surprise wedding and his new wife ends up dead, there are plenty of people around with a motive to kill.

If you love rich people behaving badly, juicy gossipy reads, and a classic whodunnit, this is the summer read for you. Add it to your list ASAP! Short chapters, intriguing characters, multiple POVs, and a man you’ll love to hate make this one a binge worthy and captivating read.

The women each have distinct personalities, each with their own connections to Peter and his family, and watching the three of them play off of each other was incredibly entertaining. After all, what’s a little back stabbing between frenemies?

Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery books for the ARC. All opinions are my own,

This was good! It was totally bingeable and extremely entertaining!

Maya, Catherine, and Leanne are all invited to the Frank's annual summer clambake at their beachside home on Cape May. Maya, a tennis champion, is Peter Frank's current girlfriend. Catherine, a successful wedding planner and influencer, is his college sweetheart, and Leanne is the aunt and legal guardian of his only son. They're all excited to be invited since this is the event of the summer. Shortly after they arrive, the 3 of them receive a text from Peter asking to meet privately. They find Peter in a room along with Tilly. Tilly a long time family friend of the Franks tells the 3 women that she and Peter will be getting married and he is breaking up with Maya, no longer investing in Catherine's business, and will be taking sole custody of his son. They are shocked and angry but they stay for the wedding. That night, when the chandelier falls on Tilly killing her, they all become suspects. Can they work together to find the real killer before it's too late?

Told in the POV of Maya, Catherine, and Leanne, this was a fun thriller. It was fast-paced, and the mystery kept me guessing. There was so much drama that I didn't want to put the book down. If you like a good popcorn thriller with rich people behaving badly, this one is for you! I highly recommend adding this one to your summer TBR.

5/5! Wow! I could not put this one down when I had the chance. I was rotating books that needed read before this one. It was hard to resist opening and wanting to finish right away. My first Kieran Scott was a success, so many laughs and tears. I felt I was in this story and rarely can an author do that to me. The chapters are short and the book flies through. Every chapter I would find it hard to stop! I also loved how the next chapter would follow along to exactly the end of previous chapter, the story line stayed consistent. I look forward to her future novels!

This was quite an engaging read! This was a complex, whodunnit type story that followed several different points of view. Once I wrapped my head around all of the different characters, I really got into the story. The plot was fast moving and the chapters were short, which made this suspenseful and mysterious read easy to fly through.

Read this if you like:

→ Complex relationships
→ Murder mystery
→ Fast paced

This was my first time reading anything by this author and it won’t be my last.

This was a good Saturday, chill afternoon read. While some of the character's choices drove me a little nuts, overall this was a fun read. I feel as though sometimes having multiple POVs in mysteries like this makes the plot a little convoluted, but it works out really nicely in this one, keeps you guessing and gives you a nice insight into how each of the main characters are unreliable in their own way.

2.5⭐️ 🎧book (rounded up to 3)

Spoiled rich people show up for an annual clambake only to discover that it’s actually a surprise wedding (the girlfriend of the groom is shocked to see the engagement ring she picked out being slipped on another woman’s finger). The next morning the new bride is dead - the chapters throughout swap between the POV ‘s of 3 different suspects. They all had motivated but who committed the crime?

Overall meh.

This book was very soap opera-esque and as I was reading I couldn’t help but think this would be an incredible TV show. At times, it was hard to flip back and forth between the 3 narrators and the twist at the end felt a little forced. However, this was a book that kept me reading to find out ‘whodunnit’ and would make a compelling summer read.
