If I'm the moon, then you must be the sky!You ever felt like someone was made for you? Crafted in your image the same way Eve was for Adam?
Javen Cooper, knew Luna Moony was made for him. First, in the form of a best friend— the female version of the boy he loved like a brother. But as time moved forward, something else bloomed— something that blurred the lines of love and lover. It was so magnetic, nothing could keep them apart.
Except life.
And Luna’s need to protect Javen.
After the death of her twin, Luna, is left to mother her siblings alone. Barely eighteen, she spends her days making things better for those around her. She’s the fixer— the one you go to when everything seems to go wrong. But who does she seek out when life becomes too much? As if her call finally gets through the prayer line, life becomes easier thanks to an inheritance from a father she never knew.
And when life is better for Luna, she makes sure she brings everyone with her.
And so the journey begins.
To The Moon, is a coming of age tale centered around poverty and black love. It meets somewhere in the middle of black girl magic and black boy joy.
“I’m going to take you to the moon, Luna.” “To the moon?” she asked to be sure. “To the f*ckin’ moon.” 🌖💛
When you’re a young black kid growing up in the poorest part of town dreams are all you have to get you by because you’re constantly surrounded by people and an environment that tells you you’ll never amount to anything. Well what happens when you have a dreamer that dreams so big, he dreams large enough for everyone in your crew. You start to think hmmmm 💭🤔 maybe we can amount to something bigger than our circumstances. But then, just like that, your dreamer is taken away from you and you’re forced to live out those dreams in his honor.
For Luna, Javen, French, Solar and Qamar this was life for them in “The Jig”. After losing their twin, older brother, best friend and patriarch of their group, Lunar, these five felt the depths of grief like never before. Not knowing which way was up and which way was down they only had the dreams Lunar left behind to keep hope alive and carry them through the fkd up hand called life they were dealt. As babies themselves they were left parenting themselves after drug addict and alcoholic parents chose their vices over nurturing these young minds. For them to have pretty much raised themselves outside of papa Jason, they did such a good job! Lord knows they had a lot of hiccups along the way and the journey wasn’t pretty but the end result was a beautiful one.
“To the Moon” follows these five from middle/high school into their adult lives and to see the growth of this crew had me feeling like I had a hand in raising them! 🥰 there were so many issues that this book took a deep dive into, and Evelyn really shed light on things that are often swept under the rug in our communities.
I loved everything about this book! And when my book boo said “you have to read this” I said to hell with my TBR and dove in head first… I regret 🗣️nothing!! This book owes me nothing and even tho I can agree with the other reviews that mentioned the time jumps leaving out details that we as readers would have loved to see on page, I’m still completely satisfied with the book from beginning to end! Evelyn is new to me but this will not be the last book by her that I indulge in!
“This is for my family… for the people who helped me along the way that ain’t here to witness this. This is for the little black boys and girls from Sapphire City who feel like they’re trapped. This is for The Jig… for the eighth wonder of the world.”🌔💛🥰
🎶Now we gon’ take it to the moon, take it to the stars We don’t know what we could do to make it this far🎶 this theme song stayed with them as teenagers and through adulthood reminding them they were destined for more.
Sigh I loved this book. These characters are going to live in my head rent free for awhile, I really connected with them and the author did a good job allowing them to grow over time.
Luna and Javen have had a chemistry since they were young and always knew that they were each other's better half. Life is lifing and speeds up their process. Luna is carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. She is making decisions and sacrifices that a 17 year old shouldn't have to make. After losing Lunar who was her twin, but also a brother and leader to their crew/family they are all doing their best to follow the path he laid out for them.
They say if the love is real let them go and if they come back it will be forever....That was Luna's motto and promise indirectly. She was head over heels in love with Javen and because they were so young and their lives were complicated she wanted to shield Javen from the mess that was their life. He was destined for greatness as a QB and she wanted to let him LIVE. The love they shared be damned 😩. I understood it, but my heart just broke for them. Both of them moved on and participated in lack luster relationships until finally it was their time.
There was so much goodness in this book. French and Solar it took them awhile, but the way this man took care of her baby from birth..the energy he gave was unmatched 😩 I hate when Mcs aren't together, but I'm not gone lie I liked Jay. He wasn't Javen, but he was a good dude and helped Luna start her career. Maverick and Tiny were so sweet. The BDE was rolling of Mav loudly and he was so secure in who he was...just yes. Bad azz Qamar and his cameos.
I was happy when Barbie was no longer on the page 🤷🏾♀️ I didn't feel sorry for her at all.
Reading about the development and maturation of Javen, Luna, French, Solar, and Qamar throughout the novel was a genuine pleasure for me. Seeing Luna choose herself after a life of rapid maturation, sacrifice, and decision-making for others was a relief. The unshakeable link between them was a touching example of the kind of family relationship that I like reading about. There should have been more of Luna and Javen's relationship when they were finally back together. Man, Jay deserves justice.
It’s been a while since I read a book where I attached myself to the younger characters but I fell in love with these kids. They were forced to grow up way too fast and had no parents around to guide them. In this book, we journey with them through 3 stages in their lives - high school, college, and life after college. Some of the things they went through were hard to read but unfortunately it’s the reality for a lot of Black children who grow up in poverty.
Luna Girl was forced into the role of the mother of the group when she just wanted to live a normal teenage life. After the death of her twin brother, she had to step up for her two younger siblings - Solar and Qamar. She also looked out for her twin brother’s best friends - French & Javen. She was so young, carrying the weight of responsibilities no child should have to carry.
Javen and Luna shared an unbreakable bond. The love between these two young people was beautiful but also heartbreaking at times. I might have yelled at them a time or two 🤭
In the end, we got to see life become beautiful for these young people but i would have loved to have more details on how they reached their dreams (the last time jump was bigger than the first two).
I really enjoyed this book. I was emotionally attached to the characters early on and fully invested in how their lives turned out. It really hurts to see young black kids have to grow up too fast. That was life for Luna, Javen, and the gang.
My heart was hearting for them. But to see them become successful adults was really the icing on the cake that almost got burned.
My favorite part was Stephanie getting it together and taken the burden from Luna.
My only gripe with this book was the huge time jumps and some inconsistencies and missing/rushed pieces to the story. But it’s not too much to take away from the book.
When Evelyn asked for three words to describe To The Moon, I said “Realistic, Heartwarming, and Healing.” These words were on a constant loop as I read the book because the story hit close to home for me. I was completely invested in the characters, as if they were my own family members. Throughout their teenage years into adulthood, readers will be reminded that family doesn’t have to be the ones blood related, as displayed in the book. Their formed family stood strong through the toughest battles and helped them to reach their ultimate goal of making it “to the moon.”
Evelyn penned an interesting twist to sports romance with a marriage of convenience trope. It is also a second chance romance. I would also say it was a slow-burn, however, I couldn’t turn away because I needed to see and feel everything. She raised awareness about grief, living in poverty, having to grow up fast, dealing with anticipatory grief and guilt, and feeling the pressure to make it out of the hood. “The Jig” could have easily swallowed this group but luckily they had each other to lean on in an effort to reach their highest potential.
I appreciated the many gems and reinforcement that black = royalty and we should never tilt our crowns and always “walk with our head up” - as Javen reminds us in the book. Speaking of Javen, his character was mature; he had a protective edge to him and a resilience that made him unstoppable. Luna was the “mother” of the group- “the keeper of secrets”, and a constant reminder that black women are the backbones of families. Together, Javen and Luna were each other’s everything but with any relationship, there are challenges and temptations.
The journey was truly worth every page turned. I encourage readers to have an open mind and give the characters grace, as they maneuver through their hardships. They’re young and dealing with many challenges with minimal adult support. The good thing is they attended the school of hard knocks and were able to change the trajectory of their lives. The character development and storyline was executed well, it was very descriptive and I could picture things as they happened, you couldn’t tell me I wasn’t there with the crew going through the motions as they did. Evelyn truly displayed what “getting it out the mud” means! I loved this one!
One: for dreams, two: for life, three: for love… To the moon 🌕💫 Luna stressed me out a little and boy did she play in Jay’s face! Glad Javen put that pressure on her… I absolutely adored this little “found”family!
I kept seeing this cover on my social media timeline with the caption READ THIS! Finally, I decided to download, and I am so glad I did. Although I found a lot of similarities in one of my all time favorite series, it was still a fresh storyline about young people with the odds stacked against them, having big enough dreams and a strong enough village to overcome. I loved each character and felt that they were well developed over the course of the story. I was so mad at Javen during his college days, but he only did exactly what Luna encouraged him to do. Honorable mention to Jay! Baby, Jay was something else! He had me wanting to dive into the book and make everything better. If LA has a story, I definitely want to read that as well. Very well written story with the perfect ending and even better message. The 8th wonder of the world! Black children🖤
Good read although towards the end/second half it started to drag. I would have been happy with 100 pages less of this book but it was good. I really loved the family bond between everyone. I will always root for the little black kids out the ghetto. To the moon.
To the Moon explores the deep connection between Luna and Javen, who have been drawn to each other since childhood. Luna shoulders heavy responsibilities and sacrifices, especially after the loss of her twin brother, Lunar. Despite their love, they part ways to protect each other from life's complexities. The story navigates themes of love, grief, poverty, and the importance of chosen family. Luna and Javen's journey is a blend of second chances, slow burn romance, and resilience against adversity, showcasing the strength of Black characters and their community.
I adored this book. It beautifully illustrates how family isn't confined to blood ties by displaying the strength of chosen family. The book is captivating from start to finish and I encourage readers to embrace the characters' struggles with empathy. These characters will live rent free in my head for a while!
I didn’t particularly like how the book was written but it was a good story about navigating grief, coming of age, found family and even a marriage of convenience. The story was so heartbreaking but even more so because these characters are so young and have dealt with so much. I definitely think all the characters had to grow individually before coming back together as couples. Javen was definitely toxic though, wanted his cake and to eat it too. Luna wasn’t any better. I hate when couples succeed at the expense of others.
The book was very redundant. I also felt like the whole premise off the story was off. Why did Dan Dan do what he did? There were plot holes that never got resolved. I also thought it was weird Jay didn’t remember that Lunar was Luna’s twin. The pet names were excessive as well. Part II to III really jumped ahead and the reader missed out on a lot of important moments. Towards the end, the writing started to get sloppy. What is a second year rookie? Mixing a fake city team with real city teams also lacked creativity. Stephanie drinking again after rehab? Sloppy.
TO THE MOON!! Hunni, this was everything and more. Now, I will say some things were skipped, but it didn't take away too much from the book. I love this whole family. I just need a Christmas update or something.
5 🌟 “ONE, FOR DREAMS. TWO, FOR LIFE. THREE, FOR LOVE. TO THE MOON!”
This is a beautiful and damn near perfect urban fiction/romance, coming of age story about loss, found family, generational healing & wealth, overcoming despite all the odds stacked against you, fated love, and sooooo much more!!! All these men stood on business when it came to loving their women properly and experiencing all this BDE was phenomenal! Black love is always a win for me and the Black community as a whole; we love to see it!
I don't have a favorite character or couple because I love them all equally for their own unique reasons, and I'm so happy for all the HEAs they were able to experience individually and together. I have no notes!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This was my first read by Ms. Everlyn, but it won't be my last. This author really did a great job with this coming to age story. I really enjoyed the storyline and watching the characters grow. Well worth the read.
Originally I wanted to read this book because of the cover page (it’s sexy af to me) then I heard really good things about it. I was not ready to read it tho, or maybe I was and I just read it at the wrong time for myself (I was super emotional reading this book, life & personal reasons) NONETHELESS this book was a beautiful story while heartbreaking and healing, emotionally provoking, yet filled with strength and unbreakable bonds. WHEW!!!!!!!!!!! My girl Luna you had to grow up so so fast that it was heartbreaking to witness and see. You loved with everything in you and you were the optimum of strength. You had to be strong not just for you but everyone else you loved as well. The burdens and the weight you had to carry was HEAVY af. Very few could survive the hand you were dealt called life. From losing your brother, having a drug addict for a mother, not having your father present, raising your younger siblings, being in love with of your best friends, working 2 jobs while going to school, if plate runneth over was a person it was you. Then there was some light through the darkness and you received a blessing, Pop asked you to marry your better half BUT in the same breathe he asked you to promise that you would let him go when the time comes because he said he’d come back. Bayyyyyybeeeee my heart broke cause what!!!!!! You listened. Javen, you had to grow up way before your time the same as Luna. But your path was always destined for greatness, you carried the weight of the world on your shoulders, you were losing people you loved from left to right, you were in love with one of your best friends, and you wanted to take the people you loved with you all the way to the top. “To the moon” Luna and Javen were raising her younger siblings together along Quamar, and Solar. They had the help of French who also had his messed up situation at home. Then Tiny came back after Lunar’s death. Bayyyybeee right before Luna got her blessing, Javen and Tiny ended up in a situation regarding Lunar. Well Luna helped them get rid of the problem because she refused for Javen to not make it. They all moved in together, Javen went to college and started feeling himself and pissed me clean tf off, Luna fulfilled her promise to pop bayyyybeee I balled. Barbie should have never came into play, her and Jay got on my nerves cause y’all needed to just move around PERIOD. They were both a casualty cause they knew deep down inside the people they wanted belonged to someone else. That bond between Javen and Luna was the deepest and I mean soul ties deep. Watching French, Tiny, Solar, and Quamar excel and become all the things they never thought would actually happen was truly heart warming. I mean who knew 6 kids from the Jig (the hood) would become the incredible people they became. The bond, the people, the family they built, YASSSS!!!! It was everything. I’m glad they all got the HEA because after the cards and hands life dealt each of them, they were more than deserving. Javen and Luna, despite the break, the love y’all shared is goal worthy because baby if til the wheels fall off was a person, it was the 2 off you, y’all showed up EVERYTIME NO MATTER what for each other and everyone else too. This was truly a beautifully written story. It’s truly a must read and I thank you Miss MaMas
Well I'm a sucker for young love stories and this one was good. I loved the little family that was created and through the ups and downs they always had each others back. This story was well written and had a beautiful story line.
I wish I could rate this book a thousand times! Ughh, this book was EVERYTHING and I got the tears to prove it.
I was definitely emotionally invested into this book right from the beginning. Everything about these kids from 'The Jig' pulled on my heart strings. I was sad for them, mad for them, happy for them, glad, baby I went through so many emotions and I would do it again.
My favorite part was Stephanie finally stepping up and lifting all of the weight off of Luna's shoulders. It was definitely a long time coming but I was beyond proud of Stephanie for finally doing the right thing. Also, I loved that Luna Girl got her another best friend in the end.
Ugh, this story was just beautiful and I want more! Also, I did want a little more in between the time jumps and I wanted a little more of French's story but other than that...perfection.
My first read by Ms. Evelyn and I guarantee you it won't be my last!
This family is bound to suck you in and root for them all. To the moon is the story of an unlikely group “making it.” From the very beginning of the book Luna was a selfless person. Everything she did was for the people she loved. She was forced into being adult while she was still a child. Luna never made excuses, she just kept doing what needed to be done. I was happy that things ended well for the family. I wish some of the conflicts had more consequences to them too. Barbie andJay took things extremely well, I thought there was more potential around how she delivered the news and his response. There were some parts that didn’t feel necessary for me towards the end. The police showing up to the new house didn’t make sense and the police showing up at the super bowl was just unnecessary. I did appreciate the jumps in years but I wish it were more intentional and fluid.
Wow, this was an unexpected read I picked up, but didn't want to put down. This made family went through ups and downs, but no matter what they were grounded. Loss, hard lives, struggles, good and bad...they overcame. I'm overwhelmed by an onslaught of emotions just trying to put the essence of this book into words. Javen, Luna, French Solar, Qamar, and Tiny didn't allow circumstances stop them from achieving exactly what both Lunar and Jason both knew was possible. As the first book I've read from this author, I'm in complete awe! Happy Reading Y'all!💋
5 stars ⭐️ My second 5 star book back to back. Ugh this book was perfection. It was on the longer side at over 400 pages but it was paced so well and had plenty of characters to keep me engaged but not too many that I was confused.
Luna is probably my favorite FMC ever. She is so strong yet soft it’s remarkable. Her ability to perform as head of household through her grief and sacrifices was amazing to read. I lowkey admired the 18-year-old. I liked watching as she and her siblings matured and held each other together, though they still fought like family but the blood is thick.
Javen is also a beautiful MMC. He had a challenging upbringing but was not a product of his circumstances due to his own resilience and the people that loved him supporting him through his dreams. He has some abandonment trauma and to see him express himself about it just 💔 my little heart.
Javen & Luna’s love is the blueprint of friends to lovers in my book. To the moon. They stood on business, they gave each other space and grace, they loved through life and death, they kept each other’s secrets and held each other accountable and even through the years, not an ounce of love was lost. Ugh I just love them so much it’s not even funny. Please read this book.
Oh and FRENCH and SOLAR? I need them to have a book. I will eat that up. I’m so excited to continue this series. Evelyn did her big one.
