In the 1930's aviation was more than an adventure, and those who dared sit in the cockpit became national heroes.
Gee Bee R1, the most famous of American air racers, won the 1932 Thompson Trophy setting a speed record of 296 mph for land planes piloted by Jimmy Doolittle. Of it, he said, "I gave her the gun and she flew like a bullet.”
It was September 6th of 1931, however, that Maude Tait flew her Gee Bee Model "Y" Senior Sportster NR11049 to victory at the Cleveland National Air Races. In doing this she won the Cleveland Pneumatic Aero l Trophy Race. This was the exciting Free-For-All race specifically for women. She set a new women's closed-course world speed record of 187.574 mph, a feat recognized by the National Aeronautic Association and the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
She missed tying the existing men’s record, by exactly one mile per hour.
Though the characterization in this story is not of her, and the aircraft portrayed is the R1 not the ‘Y’ series, Maude was the inspiration.
