The Open Marriage

Rate this book
It was supposed to save us. It destroyed us.

My husband, Marcus, and I used to be so in love. But now, after ten years together, we barely talk. I’ve seen so many of our friends’ marriages end in divorce, and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to stop that from happening to us.

And then I meet Erin. She tells me all about her perfect marriage to Kieran, and I’m shocked when she reveals the secret to their marital bliss—they have an open marriage. My heart starts to race as I consider it for me and Marcus. Could we really do this?

When Marcus cautiously agrees, I know it can’t be with strangers, and so I call Erin. She tells me there is only one complete honesty. But when I meet Kieran, it doesn’t take long for me to break that rule. Soon this isn’t an open marriage, but an affair.

As I start to fall for Kieran, Marcus becomes the attentive husband I’ve been craving, and I’m soon full of regret. This was all an awful mistake and I swear to end it. But my blood runs cold when Erin is reported missing. Who is this couple I’ve entangled our life with? And as the police knock on my door, it’s much more than just my marriage that is now at stake…

For fans of Lisa Jewell, Gone Girl and The Housemaid, this is a psychological thriller with a twist you’ll never see coming.

This isn’t nearly as salacious and delicious as you might expect.

Based on the title and plot, I expected a popcorn munch of a tale, full of people behaving badly and all sorts of scandal.

It’s…tepid. This open marriage is very, very…restrained.

This is your basic domestic suspense in which you wonder if our MC has a brain, you want to throw the husband in the trash, and so much is just so obvious that it hurts.

It’s entertaining enough and a super quick read.

Largely enjoyable and not at all scandalous.

I really enjoyed this book! Once I started reading, I devoured it!

Louise makes a new friend while at yoga class(Erin), and learns that she has an open marriage with her husband. Louise and her husband have fallen into a rut, and she is somehow slowly convinced to give it a try. In this story, you get it all. Lies, deceit, murder, missing persons, and a FMC you can’t help but root for. I thought it was a great story and will absolutely be seeking out others from this author!

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Bookouture for my advanced copy!

Probably the best book I’ve read by her but it still baffles me that she continues to suck me into her novels with the great sounding blurb 😂 I just find her books really boring with easy to guess twists - I am done this time and I mean it 😂

Sometimes you can meet someone and feel like you could become firm friends. They have a way of making you feel at ease and before you know it you have confided in them, told them some things you would never tell someone you only just met.

When you feel like the offer you a solution that could be the answer to solve your problem, you take them up on it. The question is though was this really the answer to your question, the magic trick to make it all disappear or did it have the opposite effect and made everything even more cloudy...

The author has created a few characters who mastered the art of lying and manipulation, resulting in murder and creating upheaval in quite a few people's lives.

Money is the key word and can drive people to crated the craziest schemes without any empathy for those who stand in their way.

Maybe not the most suspenseful thriller, but a very interesting and intriguing story nonetheless. I read it in one sitting and I loved the gesture Louise did at the end. 5 stars

This was ridiculous. It had such promise at the beginning but the naïveté and stupidity of main character was too much. Jumping to conclusions based on no facts or evidence … there were times I had to page backwards to find out what I missed and then realized there was actually nothing there to support her claims. And the ending? OTT …. Really really OTT.

Definitely just not for me

This was ok, I had higher hopes for this based on reading the description. Some parts were super interesting and made you want to keep reading. It was relatively predictable, but some parts I thought I had figured out but was wrong.

How far would you go to save your marriage?

Louise's marriage to Marcus is falling apart. They barely talk to each other anymore, and they haven't been intimate in six months. She knows all arrows are pointing to a divorce. But that's the last thing she wants. She still loves her husband. Yet, she doubts he feels the same way.

When she meets new girl Erin at yoga class, Louise strikes up a friendship with her right away. Erin can relate to Louise's marital woes. She and her husband Kieran were close to separating too -- until they began an open marriage. When Erin invites Louise and Marcus to join them, Louise is intrigued by the idea. Erin's beautiful. She imagines her husband Kieran is handsome. A peek on social media confirms it. However, she doubts Marcus will go for it. But she's wrong. About Marcus... and everything.

Meeting Erin and Kieran in a hotel to swap partners was supposed to save their marriage. Instead, Louise begins an affair with Kieran behind Marcus' back as Marcus turns into the attentive husband she wanted him to be -- one night too late.  When Erin suddenly goes missing and the police find a dead body, Louise learns Kieran and Erin aren't who they seemed to be -- and her marital woes go way deeper than she realized.

Full of deceit, betrayal, lies, and even a murder or two, "The Open Marriage" by Victoria Jenkins is as suspenseful and twisty as it is gripping and addictive. It's easy to get instantly swept up in this book. In fact, it'll be a surprise if you don't. The storyline is brilliant, but so is the writing itself and the way the story was written. So many thrillers leave you with a feeling of "what the heck is going on" for the first part of the book. Especially in the early chapters, you feel a bit disoriented and confused as the author (or the narrator) intentionally and noticeably leaves out pertinent information to keep you guessing.

But not in "The Open Marriage". Since it's written in first person point-of-view, you are privy to Louise's thoughts and actions from the beginning. You know what Louise knows, and you see what she sees. You are immersed in her world. This includes her marriage, relationships, career, et cetera. That's not to say you won't be kept guessing. You will!

You know what Louise knows, and you see what she sees. You are immersed in her world. This includes her marriage, relationships, career, et cetera. That's not to say you won't be kept guessing. You will! Is Louise a liar? Someone's blackmailing her. Someone else warns her to watch her back. Erin goes missing, and a body's found. Who's guilty of something? Who's not? Are Louise's perceptions of the other characters correct? Seriously, though. What's going on? It was a simple spouse swap. Why has Erin disappeared? Why was someone murdered? There's so much to figure out -- and to love. This book is omggood (and with absolutely no graphic, naughty bits).

"The Open Marriage" is a true page-turner with plenty of twists to make your jaw drop and your breath catch in your throat. With a well-developed story, a perfectly executed plot, and an ending you won't see coming, "The Open Marriage" is a fast-paced book that you won't be able to read fast enough.

Marcus and Louise are no longer in love. They decide instead of divorcing to have an open marriage. That'll help improve things....or so they think.

From the title alone, I thought I knew where this book would take me. My initial thoughts were wrong. This book went in a direction I wasn't expecting but thoroughly enjoyed! I loved that there was a twist on the extramarital affair trope with open consent. This book weaved a very tangled web that was full of drama, twists, lies, deceit, and betrayal. This book reeled me in and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would develop. I was truly shocked at the twists and turns that happened as the plot developed.

The Open Marriage was a quick read that will keep you entertained as you anxiously await for the drama and twists to unfold!

First, I want to thank Victoria Jenkins, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

WOW!! When I found out Victoria Jenkins wrote a book with the title The Open Marriage and read the description I just knew I had to read it. I mean how can you not with that title right? With the title The Open Marriage I was a little disappointed at the lack of spice. Many may not agree with me but that concept could have gone a little farther than it did.

If Louise said I’m fine one more time I was going to seriously scream!! She drove me absolutely bonkers!!

Victoria picked out the most unique out of the box names for her characters-I just loved them.

I enjoyed the book. It was fast paced, kept my attention, was a binge readable one sitting type book, and had a lot of wicked twists and turns to it. In fact the climax of the book I never in a million years saw coming. Oh so many ups and downs in this book!

Victoria should really consider writing a follow up book to this one as there are a few open ended storylines that can be explored. That would be a fun read as well.

Marcus and Louise used to be in love. Instead of divorcing, they want to rekindle their marriage. When Louise meets Erin, she tells Louise about her wonderful marriage to Kieran and reveals the reason – they have an open marriage. When Marcus and Louise agree to try this lifestyle, Louise realizes she likes Kiernan. When Erin goes missing will the police be after Louise?
Oh, what a tangled web, but what do you expect to happen? I could just see all the problems arising from this – what if one spouse loved it, and the other one didn’t? What if it didn’t strengthen their marriage, but dissolved it? The Open Marriage had me hooked from the beginning. Like a house of cards, when the lies start building up, everything collapses. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, there is another great twist that you didn’t see coming. I loved this book and highly recommend it!

Louise feels things aren’t right in her marriage, she’s sure her husband is having an affair, but doesn’t know how to broach the subject with her.

When she meets Erin at her yoga class, the two quickly become friends. Erin tells Louise how her marriage went through a difficult patch, and how she and her husband tried an “open marriage” to see if it helped.

Louise can’t stop thinking about this and talks to her husband about giving it a try. From this moment on, all does not go well.

This is a psychological thriller that had a twist that I was not expecting at all.

I wasn’t overly keen on Louise’s husband or Louise’s friend, Erin. I didn’t particularly like their characters.

I felt sorry for Louise, but believed she was quite naive, but I think that was probably because she was trying to save her marriage.

My thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

This was an Advanced Readers Copy that I received from Net Galley. It is a short book, and I could at least finish it. But it wasn't great. I saw the twists and turns coming. She could have gone into way more detail and really developed the characters and plot, but it just felt rushed to me and boring. I wouldn't recommend this book.

Bitch Let Her Brother Rot

Gawd are there words to put to paper how much I absolutely hated this selfish bitch of a heroine.

Cameron was only right about one thing was he?

Nah, he clocked your toxic ass and everything happened to you, You. Deserved. It. For. Kicking. Family. To. The. Curb.

Fuck her.

I mean i go no contact for my family, and I'm pretty understanding when you need to go, because the Narc who got the money, also got the toxicity and I loathe this school principal for abandoning him while telling herself he abandoned her.

Glad she got fucked in her job, fucking narcissist wouldn't know how to teaxh those kids any empathy.

All this bitch does is centre herself in everything.

Fucking hell.

My only solace at the end is how much this cunt will hate herself for all this, self sacrificing whingebag.

Betcha she buys food for homeless and doesn't give them money either.

Oh Wait.

She did that to her own brother and then LOVE BOMBED and GASLIT him before he left.

Sad she wasn't gutted.

She was conned because she cons herself.

Toxic judgmental asshole enabled her brothers pain and denied him an Emotional Support Network when he reached out, but emotionally fed herself from the sight of him in front of him.

Killed her own brother, toxic shit.

Eat the fucking rich and shes why. Charity is for those who purchase indulgances for their own shitty pathetic conscience.

All this book she is constantly affirming how proud she is of herself while completely anihilating her brother.

Shes a neoliberal fascist.

People like her give their shit to charity so they don't have to afford the people around them, their complexities, like she was afforded hers.

Legit, she's worse than her da. She turned her back and let her brother rot, worse still, she was glad SHE got to see his face as she done it.

I loathe her fucking hypercritical, narcissistic ass.

She was revealed to be a cheater in this, just one that never afforded herself the opportunity.

Cheaters like cheaters.

You married what you wanted love, someone simple and uncomplicated, not like your disabled brother, no, thats too complex.

What a bully.

If you thought your husband was having an affair, you'd confront him wouldn't you? Not Louise, she thought it easier to tell all to a complete stranger at her exercise class, who them fills her head with solutions that are going to cause even more carnage in their marriage.

I've previously enjoyed several of Jenkins thrillers, I like her writing style. She knows how to keep you turning the pages, throwing a twist or two into the mix along the way, then blindsides you with an ending you just didn't see coming.

However hard I tried, I couldn't get invested into the characters. This didn't distract from my enjoying the book in any way.

The premise of this book was titillating but I knew it wouldn’t end well. When you play with fire you get burned.
Having an open marriage is a concept that I cannot fathom and can only further the demise of a relationship instead of embolden it.
What Louise didn’t know is it would cause a chain reaction of monstrous proportions.
Even I didn’t anticipate the extent of lies, betrayal, and backstabbing that goes on in the book.
It will keep you on your toes and not somewhere else!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the early read.

Nowhere near as interesting or salacious as the blurb makes it sound! The book has a good premise and starts offwell but that’s about it. Simple and expected twists and the unfurling of the lies and deception is quick and without any proper justification! The protagonist in a drugged state suddenly seems to solve everything , without any premise or reason why she seems to believe what she thinks is the truth.
Definitely can give this a miss. I came across it on Kindle unlimited and thought it would be a good read but wasn’t happy with it.

This authors books always have the ability to suck the reader in from the outset and this was no exception and pretty much read it in one sitting. This was a slow burning domestic psychological thriller that makes you question do you really know anyone that well and also to think about what if this happens or what are the consequences of doing this?

Look forward to what this author writes next

~| MY SYNOPSIS (no spoilers) |~
Louise and Marcus shared a deep affection for one another, but after a decade had passed, their communication had waned significantly. Witnessing numerous divorces among their friends and acquaintances, Louise is committed to preserving their marriage at all costs.

Enter Erin, who shared her insights into her successful marriage with Kieran, which involved an open marriage. Intrigued by the concept, Louise poses and discusses the idea with Marcus. Surprisingly, Marcus cautiously agrees, queueing Erin, her husband Kieran, Louise, and her husband Marcus to meet. There was one condition: complete honesty.

However, as Louise gets involved with Kieran, the rule of honesty blurs tremendously. This led to a situation where the open relationship turned into an affair, creating deep seeded feelings of regret as Marcus displays newfound attentiveness and affection. Recognizing her mistake, Louise ends the affair with Kieran.

Unfortunately, the situation takes a darker turn when Erin is reported missing, raising questions regarding the true nature of the couple’s relationship dynamics. Caught in a web of deceit and uncertainty, Louise grapples with the consequences of her actions as the law enforcement get involved. This jeopardizes her marriage, but also poses a threat to her reputation and livelihood. After muddying the water with dishonesty and fabrications, can Louise crawl out unscathed?

~| MY THOUGHTS |~
This was a quick, enjoyable read, even though the level of transgressions and steaminess was tame in comparison to what the title of the book and its synopsis suggests. Despite this, I was shellshocked—and thoroughly entertained—by some unexpected key elements that brought a juicy amount of drama and angst. I wasn’t expecting things to pan out how they did, and had my eyebrows glued to the top of my forehead as the story’s conclusion unfolded.

The largest reason this was a 3-star rating for me as opposed to a 4-star rating was simply because of Louise. The sheer number of times in which she analyzed, overthought, and then reanalyzed exactly what she previously analyzed gave me reader’s whiplash.

Additionally, all too often Louise jumped the gun and drew irrational conclusions without any proof or facts; this led to a substantial number of secrets and miscommunication. In hindsight, given the most notable issue in the marriage between Louise and Marcus—prior to “the open relationship”—was dwindled communication, I’ve begun to wonder how much of that could be attested to Louise sabotaging herself.

All in all, this book had fascinating elements as well as those that made me mentally facepalm. Nevertheless, it was a quick, altogether enjoyable read that I would recommend to those looking for juicy drama and a main character who doesn’t utilize brainpower as much as she should.

I would like to express my profound gratitude to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Victoria Jenkins for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Open Marriage by Victoria Jenkins is about Lou who is married to Marcus and has been for the past 10 years and feels like they are going through a rough patch. When she meets Aaron in her yoga class she is enamored by this beautiful woman who is so friendly and once she gets to know her and learns the secret to her successful marriage Lou is at first shocked, but then talks Marcus into doing it as well. Lou has a lot on her plate her mother recently died and she is now left with having to clean out her house and deciding what to do with all the ill gotten money her dad scammed from innocent victims her brother wants some of it Lou refuses. He is 41 years old and still lives like a teenager and is not responsible at all. After her and Marcus switch partners with Aaron in Kieran it shakes lose entire foundation she cannot stop thinking about Kieran and she fears this has radically changed her and Marcus‘s relationship eventually however it will change their entire life. Someone goes missing someone is found dead end it seems Lou is the prime suspect. The only way I can describe the ending of this book is shock and awe as a thriller fan I know I am supposed to not count anyone out as the bad guy but OMG I don’t know why but this one truly shocked me. I expect twists like this from my favorite domestic thriller authors but never considered Victoria Jenkins to be one of them but after this book I am definitely put in her on my list for authors to look out for. This book isn’t as long as most domestic thrillers but it is a great read and one I definitely recommend there was lots in the book I haven’t put in my review but what I put sounds interesting to you trust me when I say there is much more. I also want to say just as an aside I didn’t understand why Lou didn’t want to give Cameron some of the vast amount of wealth she received in her mothers will, I mean I get it it was ill gotten gains but if she didn’t want it she could’ve at least given him some of it. I want to thank Bookouture for my free art copy via NetGalley. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
"The Open Marriage" by Victoria Jenkins is a gripping psychological thriller that explores the complexities of love, trust, and betrayal. The story follows the protagonist as she navigates the tumultuous waters of her marriage after considering the possibility of an open relationship.

What initially appears to be a solution to the couple's marital problems quickly spirals into a web of deceit and danger. The introduction of Erin and Kieran, a couple in an open marriage, sets off a chain of events that tests the boundaries of love and loyalty. As secrets unravel and tensions rise, the protagonist finds herself caught in a dangerous game with devastating consequences.

One of the strengths of the novel is its fast-paced narrative, filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats. The characters are well-developed and multi-dimensional, each grappling with their own desires and motivations. The tension builds steadily throughout the story, culminating in a jaw-dropping climax that will leave readers reeling.

I particularly enjoyed the way the author explores themes of trust and honesty within relationships, and how the pursuit of happiness can sometimes lead to unexpected consequences. The short chapters and immersive writing style make it difficult to put the book down, and I found myself devouring it in just a matter of time.

Overall, "The Open Marriage" is a gripping thriller that will appeal to fans of Lisa Jewell and Gone Girl. With its unpredictable plot and compelling characters, it's a must-read for anyone craving a suspenseful and thought-provoking story. I highly recommend it and give it a well-deserved 5-star rating.

Thank you Victoria Jenkins, Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this advance copy

Louise and Marcus are at that point in their marriage where they have started to become preoccupied with other things and are not making each other a priority. Louise is dealing with the aftermath of her mothers death, her brothers descent into addiction, and she is still coming to terms with the fact that her father was a criminal who extorted money from innocent people. Marcus is constantly paying attention to his phone and rarely makes time to even look at his wife.

One day Louise meets Erin at yoga class and this is the catalyst that will send her life and her marriage into a downward spiral. Erin tells Louise about her marriage that was at one point on the verge of divorce and how she and her husband Kieran saved it by giving an open marriage a try. You can guess where the book goes from there.

Eventually someone ends up missing and Louise starts a downward spiral. She is at the center of a missing persons investigation and doesn’t know how she ended up here.

I enjoyed this book and felt a connection to the characters. Once I was able to really get into it I just wanted to keep reading. Always the mark of a good book. The twist wasn’t as twisty as I was hoping for, but it was still a good one.

All in all I think this would be a good book for anyone who enjoys Freida McFadden and Shari Lapena. It was a quick read and definitely held my attention. 4/5 stars ⭐️

Book was OK. It was not nearly as addicting and thrilling as I thought it would be. The storyline had some twists but I would say majority of the surprises were pretty obvious. There were some plot holes, but who's really counting right?

The Open Marriage by Victoria Jenkins is about a marriage falling apart. Louise and Marcus haven't been intimate with each other in months and Louise would do anything to make their marriage work. She meets Erin at yoga class and strikes up a friendship with her right away. Erin can relate to Louise's marital woes. She and her husband Kieran were close to separating too until they began an open marriage. Willing to try anything to repair their marriage, Louise convinces Marcus into swapping partners with Erin and Kieran for one night.

However, after that one night, everything started to fall apart even more. Louise had an affair with Kieran and Erin goes missing. Louise discovers Erin and Kieran are not who they say they are.

The story was told from Louise's point of view. However, it was really hard to comprehend Louise's decisions. She makes me scratch my head and wonder how someone could be so trusting and oblivious. Her character only added to my disappointment as the plot thickens.

While this was a fun read, I did not think this was book really had much else going for it.

Thank you to Netgalley, publisher and author Victoria Jenkins for providing me with an ARC, in exchange for my honest, unbiased review.

It was supposed to save us. It destroyed us.

My husband, Marcus, and I used to be so in love. But now, after ten years together, we barely talk. I've seen so many of our friends' marriages end in divorce, and I'm prepared to do whatever it takes to stop that from happening to us. And then I meet Erin. She tells me all about her perfect marriage to Keiran, and I'm shocked when she reveals the secret to their marital bliss - they have an open marriage. My heart starts to race as I consider it for me and Marcus. Could we really do this? When Marcus cautiously agrees, I know it can't be with strangers, and so I call Erin. She tells me there is only one complete honesty. But when I meet Keiran, it doesn't take long for me to break that rule. Soon this isn't an open marriage, but an affair.

Louise met Erin while at yoga and quickly become friends. Louise and her husband have not been getting along, and she finds out that Erin has an open marriage, so Louise and Marcus decide to give it a try.

I had higher hopes for this book after reading the premise. It was quite predictable. I wasn't keen on any of the characters. It's filled with lies and deceit, but the ending was a bit of a surprise.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #VictoriaJenkins for my ARC of #TheOpenMarraige in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. Domestic thrillers are my jam and this one didn't disappoint. The single POV worked really well as you felt that you were right there with Louise going through what she was dealing with.
A stale marriage. The malaise of middle age with nothing exciting to look forward to. Knotty family dynamics. Grief or losing a parent. A new friendship. These are all situations so many of us can identify with.
The book is quite slow in the beginning. It takes about 40% of the way in for things to start to happen. But I understand why. The author was trying to set the stage and give us some back story. Despite the pace, I was never bored. Always wanted to keep reading.
The twists weren't terribly difficult to guess. There was definitely some foreshadowing there. I did find it unbelievable that a spouse would never show the photo of a signifiant ex to their current partner. Or that the current partner wouldn't look them up on social media.
But that's a small complaint in an otherwise great read.
PS I just hate the stupid morality clauses for educators. What they do when off the clock shouldn't be anyone's business. And I say that as a mother.
