It's no wonder that Peri should possess some of the magical talent that her mother, the High Lady Kayli, is known for.

However, the young and impetuous Peri is determined to prove that her swordsmanship, not her magic, is her true calling.

I liked this book! Was it amazing? Nah. Took me a long time to like the protagonist what with her “im not like the other girls” being repetitively shoved in your face in the beginning but after the introductions she was pretty fleshed out. The world was interesting, the magic was well thought out, but, toward the end it was a bit meh and predictable. Worth a read!

Love this book. Great world building and a terrific strong heroine. This book sets you down in the midst of three cultures and manages to make you feel like you know exactly where you are. Plenty of turns and twists to keep you reading.

I think I must have first read this when it was first published around 1999 because I remember buying it firsthand from a bookseller. I loved the story then and had no idea until recently that it was a sequel.

Last week I read the prequel and did not enjoy it, so I came back to this book wondering if my view of of it had been sugarcoated by youthful eyes. Not at all, as it turns out. The sequel was still a wonderful read for me - great characters, lots of action, excellent pacing, and an interesting setting and plot. I really enjoyed it.

And there's definitely no need to read the prequel in order to understand this story. It did flesh out some of the revelations but wasn't essential at all.

A strong, likable heroine and a very interesting, fast-moving plot. There's magic in this world and it's very intriguing, but it -- unfortunately -- takes a backseat to everything. My only other complaint is that some of the supporting characters felt a little impersonal to me and relationships lacked a certain depth.

I always loved this book and all the author's other stories. I wish she had written more books. Her characters are approachable and yet appropriately foreign. The land is just obscure enough to not be ours but yet relatable enough to make it viable. I love her humor and her characterization.
