This book was a pleasant little surprise. I didn’t have very high hopes when I started. I’m afraid that comes of knowing absolutely nothing about Anita Bryant prior to this and reading too many biographies of celebrity Christians. The latter have tended to either make too much of their life before salvation or be overly focused on their career path after salvation. Instead, this is the biography of a Christian who became famous. It chronicles her struggle to follow Christ through all the temptations of childhood to fame and popularity in a rough business as well as in the joys and sorrows of marriage and family. It follows her life from the events of her birth through the early years of her marriage. It was really very encouraging. She is open about her doubts and fears but always points to Christ’s power in getting her through them. Without preaching she teaches us how to handle the everyday temptations and dreams that can so easily distract us. I really can’t express how applicable this story is to every life. Just the simple constant way she shows the power of prayer is a lesson everyone should hear. I can’t say that I agree with all of the choices she made, but I would still recommend it.
