Steamy Shorts #6

The Next-Door Neighbor

Rate this book
I fu*king hate my next-door neighbor, Piper.

She always turns her nose up whenever we bump into each other in the hallway, tells me to lower my music when I can barely hear it myself, finds something wrong with me, and glares at me every chance she gets. It’s like she gets offended by the very air I breathe.

It shouldn’t turn me on, but it does.

Especially since it’s hard to ignore just how beautiful she is, how her eyes light up when she’s genuinely happy, or how she tries to mask her sadness with anger.

I fu*king hate Piper.

Mostly because she ignores me.
So I do what every mature, self-respecting man in his mid-30s does when he’s attracted to someone who won’t ever give him the time of day—I piss her off, then flirt with her, then ask her out.

Piper thinks I’m joking.

She never says no, just rakes her eyes up and down my body and turns her back on me with a scoff.
Fine, Piper. Fine. I get the message.

Challenge accepted.

cute and fun

I was surprised by this one! I’ve read this author before and remember her stories being over the top, with crazy obsessed heroes and always good for a laugh

This one was far more tame. The hero wasn’t crazy obsessed, which was a shame. But he was protective and he kept flirting with the heroine, only to have her shoot him down every time.

While this wasn’t as colorful as other books I’ve read from this author, it was still fast and fun and cute.

Safe. Hero’s past isn’t mentioned but doesn’t come off as a manwhore. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to her hero. No ow/very minor unwanted OM. No cheating or sharing or abuse. HEA with epilogue years out.

I loved the whole fake hating trope. She couldn’t stand him, but in reality was definitely burning for him. He loved getting under her skin. And Thor? I was obsessed that he had a pig as a pet. It made me so happy. My favorite part was definitely the ending. Her insecurities with her body after having children and the way he handled it. 100% spot on. I remember feeling that exact same way after having my child. It was perfect!

Short, quick read and it’s sort of spicy but honestly what got me out of this book was how forced, unnatural, and weird the dialogue was.

The book starts out as:
“oh my god, why is there a pig in the hallway?”
“Chill, lady. He’s my pet, and he has as much a right to be here as you.”

Other examples:
“And thank you for helping me earlier.”
“You can thank me with me a kiss.”

“You realize you’ve been skirting around something we need to talk about, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“The kiss.”
“Oh. Now? You want to talk now? I can barely breathe while walking, and you want to talk?”

-_- ew. No. No. No. ALL of this dialogue feels like something a high schooler would write. “Chill lady?” “You can thank me with a kiss?”

“I hate you so I’m gonna casually say “why is there a pig in the hallway”?”

I know with some romance books the dialogue can be a little unnatural because it’s supposed to be what we wish men would say but the MAJORITY of what was written felt unnatural and just odd when I would say it out loud. Meaning, if I’m testing to see if something feels natural, I’m going to see how it sounds spoken and not in my head. And for this book, I could tell without speaking it out loud for a LOT of the dialogue, it was really unnatural and it felt forced. Like really really forced.

Novellas are hard because you’re trying to make a story happen in a short period of time. But the problem with this novella is everything felt like it was forced and there was no natural chemistry between Parker and Piper. I didn’t feel it. And not only that, I’ve read novellas that don’t read like this. So I know it’s possible.

It was insta-love badly disguised as enemies to lovers.

Parker is a photographer. He is fit, hot, a big flirt and has a pet pig. He finds his neighbor irresistible and flits with her constantly. She just finds him annoying.
Piper has fought her way to the top for a management job . She is attracted to her neighbor but thinks he is a big tease. She is confronted by a creepy co-worker and Parker and Thor come to her aid.
This was such a cute read. Parker is an all around great guy. He is persistent, kind, flirty and a protector.
Piper is use to being on her own and keeps her walls up. I love how Parker’s persistent finally breaks through.
Thor of course is the hero of the story.

Parker saw his new neighbor Piper and was instantly obsessed with her. They bicker back and forth, but all his flirting and asking her out isn't helping him. Piper thinks he is a flirt and he won't mean it sincerely when asking her out. When a stalking co-worker corners her, Parker finally gets the chance to keep his woman safe and to show her that he is the right man for her. Instalove, sweet, fun to read, steamy, romantic and safe with a sweet HEA 😍😍😍

okay

Parker and Piper were a good couple. I enjoyed most of the story but it took me a minute to get into because I felt like I was missing something right at the beginning. They talked about how much they hated each other at the start but there was really only one scene where that came across. But overall it was okay.

Piper and Parker

I am finding it difficult to write a review about the story ...
Let's just say it was a bit bland, a bit silly. Not spark between the main characters.
Honestly?! Forgettable

He's always on time

It's like she didn't she needed Parker, but he always showed up just in time. And the boulder 'ride' my hero. First man that didn't want to take advantage of that situation. He was just the man she needed.

Loved It!

Parker, Piper and Thor are just perfect in this story! I loved how sweet and determined Parker was to get Piper's attention. She is determined, stubborn, smart, and a mouth quick and quirky. Their love story is a sweet read!! Enjoy!!

A quick cup of coffee read, fun, lighthearted, a bit of gray tones in it but so quick that it just adds to the story. Really enjoyed the characters. I love the reverse grumpy sunshine, I love how also the FMC is not like Lena Little’s normal female characters.

Good

I didn't understand what Piper and her co-worker were doing in an alley together at night, and why the scenario was repeated twice. Parker was cute and made up for that flaw.

The Next Door Neighbor

As much as Piper would shut Parker down, she was insanely attracted to him, thus her behavior. I loved that he always showed up at the right time and protected her from everything.
