This is sixth in a LitRPG apocalypse power fantasy. Read in order.
Wow! Now that's a sweet cover. Spoilers for the previous books in this one. You've been warned.
So this one picks up with Joey and May married and ascended to the next realm. A realm where the queen has it in for them because they messed up her petty revenge in their starter realm and got lots of attention. Fortunately, with their paired fate, May and Joey end up together in this next realm. Unfortunately, that means we finally get to see them interact as man and wife. Or boy and girl playing man and wife. And let me tell you, it is every bit as cringe as I feared it could be. Scratch that. It went cringier. Seriously, this is not a healthy relationship. And it isn't helped by foisting a bunch of that on May's background as a war siren and hand-waving all the worst bits.
Also unfortunately, they're together the entire story, so the action bits are pretty much bookended by them being, um, "together".
Okay, it's not actually dire. And as long as you're still in it for the power fantasy with a completely unleashed creativity, then you'll probably be fine. I plowed through because it is still just every kind of whackadoodle and I'm still enjoying the unmitigated mayhem as Joey and May tear their way through the Beautiful Hell Realm they land in.
And it turns out that when you land the best performing beginners into an absolute hell trying its best to kill them what you end up doing amounts to powerleveling said beginners into even further ridiculous heights.
And, as in previous books, Joey keeps accruing the underpowered-but-striving into his "hoard" and nurturing their talents to his own purpose (that turns out to serve their own ends at the same time). Frankly, his collecting people and nurturing them for all the wrong reasons is part of my continued draw to the series.
I was afraid the cringe would drop down to three stars, but the whackadoodle and nurturing and sheer imagination trapped in a breakneck pace and good actiony shenanigans bring this into a four star read I can't ever recommend to anybody prone to being very serious about healthy marital relationships.
A note about Steam/Chaste: So they're married, but May's siren charm is a true threat to Joey's autonomy. And that ramps during, um, cuddle time. So they go for days and weeks with random cuddles and affectionate touches. Joey is explicitly a virgin until the end of this book where they do the thing. Finally. None of the spicy bits are on-page, but there's enough physical affection (with minor detail) that I can't actually call this chaste.
On the one hand I feel bad, because it is clear the author really loves this stuff. And putting out a book a month is respectable...but that might be part of the problem. There's literally nothing meaty in these books to really hold onto. I'm bored, I don't really care about any of it, and if I had anything else to read I would have quit before this book. Since I made it to 6 I can say I really did try, but I just don't care if I ever read more about these characters. I thought for a few moments throughout the series that I might enjoy more of Princess Maylolee, but now that they are married she is literally just a drone for his desires. Oh, and that whole dragon hoard thing annoyed me from the start, and even though it is supposedly gone (but really not) it still annoys me.
Finally, not trying to be mean, but despite what the bio says I am pretty sure the author is a teenage virgin. How else can you explain a married couple of 18 and 19 years old doing nothing more than head pats and occasional kisses? I get that he likes anime, but come on! It is ridiculously awkward how far the author goes to try to avoid having them do anything even vaguely adult. Don't describe it, just admit that they did it and move on. This is just dumb.
Of course, if any of these things get rectified I'll never know, because there is no reason for me to ever consider reading them again.
At the end of the previous book they got married. I quit reading this largely forgettable series because our intrepid author is turning themselves inside out so our married heroes don’t have sex. Remember that our heroes are 19. So that was enough for me. I mean really this is yet another formulaic litrpg book. Nothing new, except the occasional reminder that our male hero is of darker skin. It’s simply a series of books that aren’t too objectionable, but are just for wasting time with. No other reason to read these potato chip books.
I hope I wish for the huge jumps. I really hoped for more. But this series has me excited to see what's next. This series is worth it. I like that the stats can be skipped most of the time. I enjoy them but I don't care all of the time. Love the series put 7th on my list of books series. And that to me says the most. My top ten has Jim butcher and choas seed and mercy Thompson series in it. Their alot of good book but this one caught and held my attention. I gave it 4 stars cause I was really hope for more of the quick witted action pack force to be recognize dude. So their is that but the inner dialog was more to me too. So still a great book still awesome series. And one that I recommend to others.
The only reason I did not rate 5 stars is simple... why have a recap of past books, a refresher on character stats, and the set aside a complete chapter, i think chapter 13, to restate those stats when there had not been much change. I hope with the next book/s that the author keeps the stat refresher at the beginning, and maybe an exit stat at end of book, but just update us with specifics as they happen which has been done all along.
I just finished reading book 6. I have to wait on the next book. I am going to crazy waiting, but I know it will be worth it. I've enjoyed all the books, from first to last. This is one of the few series that's a great read. Joey has come a long way with hard way.. No short cuts for him. I was very surprised he didn't have a harem along the way. But I can respect that he worked on getting stronger & later getting the right girl. Now they are working on kicking butt together & doing double damage to their enemies.
This is my first review of this series and it is definitely a roller coaster of a ride to say the least. The author builds each character and has the reader care about them which makes some scenes tough to push through without tearing up. Not this book in the series but a couple of previous books. As a roller coaster there are some slow parts that I have actually fallen asleep to but then the author grabs you and pulls you in again. Please read the series. Great adventure!!!
For the most part, the story was great, if you cut out all the "romantic" parts which I found myself skipping over every single time. Adding romantic parts to a litrpg can be a tricky process that can easily get sickly. Romance is hard to write so I generally favor when authors skip it. In this book. A milder form of it would have been ok but the jarring personality switch to encourage the more "romantic" parts felt forced.
It's just convoluted as heck the names of stuff like the beautiful demon this or that and the "bad" magic. Oh yeah and the whole chapters of nothing but spell info, really you have to use a whole chapter to list them it's like nothing else could be used instead say like actual story content. The other books were better and it just seems like it's going down hill from here... I think I'm going to just stop here and find something else to read.
Please please pretty please ease up on the relationship part of this I'm starting to get violently ill. I realize at this point it's impossible to stop but I swear you must have spent half the damn book on how much they love and adore each other. We get it we really do now let's go back to our overpowered heroes getting more overpowered in ridiculous ways.
Things somewhat slowed down in this book. There is this cultivation/divinity friction that lefts the MCs and reader somewhat confused and fills like a mistake rather than the main thing that separates them from every other person in Multiverse Z. -1 star for getting rid of old skills, man you could just evolve and consolidate them. I am very salty about that. Numbers must go only up!
But this book seemed rushed, and had way too much stat fluff. Who ever is this Author boss, let him cook. This book ends as he’s going after the weakest Demon Lord.
Six books in, and the story keeps evolving nicely. Like the pairde growth of the MC's and look forward to seeing where the author takes it. Looking forward to reading the next book.
Just wish it didn’t have to be a demon/hell thing. Otherwise great book. What’s the fascination with demonic stuff for all these writers? Just use some other alien type so some of us don’t have to deal with that icky feeling.
Great powers. Cool and thoughtful monsters with just enough twist to give more and dig deeper into their capabilities for destroying the crawlers. The end of this book was a cool transition to the next phase.
I like this story. Again, there is tons of action and character growth. The slow burning in the background finally combusts. Woohoo! I look forward to more.
