Five friends discover there are bonds even death can’t break in the first book of this gritty paranormal fantasy series featuring a slow-burn romance.
Everyone in Ridgemore knows Joss and her friends Griffin, Hunt, Layla, and Brady have been inseparable since they were kids. You mess with one, and you’ll have the whole bunch to answer to. Their senior year should be one long, carefree party, but Joss can’t seem to get over a crush on Griffin that could screw up their lifelong friendship. She can’t help it; she’s drawn to his devilish smirk and the brooding stare that seems to trail her wherever she goes.
But any thoughts of romance go out the window when a horrible accident changes everything. One minute Brady is broken and flatlining; the next he’s alive and kicking. Everyone is stunned by the “Miracle Kid’s” rapid reversal—except for Brady’s parents, who want him to lie about how not terrible he feels. In fact, his friends’ families are acting pretty strange too.
As Brady’s miraculous recovery morphs into a nightmare, Joss and the rest of their tight-knit crew begin to realize their sleepy mountain town is infested with disturbing secrets. Secrets about who—or what—they really are. With eyes everywhere, there’s no one they can trust. It’s the five of them against the world . . . and the world is coming for them.
Stranger Things meets Riverdale in an edgy new-adult series, in which heart-pounding paranormal adventure, slow-burn romance, and a friendship stronger than death converge.
Lucía Ashta believes in magic, laughter, and happily-ever-afters. She loves writing fierce heroines who wield witty comebacks as adeptly as their swords, and the warriors who slay their enemies alongside them. The camaraderie of found family, kooky magical creatures, and dragons—lots of dragons—also enrich Lucía’s many stories. She lives with her family in the forest nestled in the mountains, where she dreams up fantastical worlds and hopes to someday journey to them.
I don’t think I was the intended audience for this book, so if you’re at all interested, give it a shot. It was definitely a higher schoolers’ story and written in that way. I was definitely more on the parents’ side on this one. There was a lot happening in the beginning and end, but not a lot of details/plot points going on in the middle chunk of the book. I wanted more information and details regarding the paranormal/supernatural piece. I was also hoping for more character development throughout the book. None of the characters really resonated with me. I was honestly most invested in her dog 😆 I’m sorry, but not the book/series for me, so I will not be continuing this one.

Not my kind of book. I see where it’s more Teen/YA, but I also have a few gripes. Had a whole review typed out, but I’ll just say I’ll pass on this series.
What a banger of a series opener. Fans of Stranger Things will for sure love this adult slow-burn paranormal romance. It’s got that vibe but with a purely modern setting and five teens who are a true ride or die crew. There’s a grittiness here that takes the story to the next level and Ashta does not hesitate to put her characters into truly bad situations to reveal some astonishing consequences. This one does end on a cliffhanger, but it’s the very best kind and I am well and truly hooked and will be trying desperately to get my hands on the second book as soon as humanly possible!
Ok, first of all, this book is nothing as the ones I have read from Lucía before; I was greatly surprised by the originality of the plot, it's a great start for this new series. 😍 I loved all of the guys and the amazing bond they have formed; they are so different from each other but it's as if those differences is what makes them fit perfectly together, and I'm rooting so hard for two of them to become more than friends! 🤗🥰 They live their lives as every other young adult in their senior year, everything is so normal, until it's not... their lives will turn upside down when they discover the secret all of their parents have been hiding from them; a secret so big, their lives will never be the same again! 😲😳🤯 Gaaahhhh, I NEED the next book stat after that ending, I need to know... (no spoilers) 😭... RUN for your copy! ❤️
Ride and Die kicks off a gritty paranormal fantasy series that blends Stranger Things and Riverdale vibes with tight-knit friendships, eerie secrets, and a touch of slow-burn romance.
Joss and her lifelong crew—Griffin, Hunt, Layla, and Brady—are the heart of this story. Their bond feels authentic, and the chemistry between Joss and Griffin adds a fun romantic tension. What starts as typical senior year drama takes a sharp turn when Brady survives a fatal accident—and his “miracle” recovery sets off a chain of dark discoveries about their families and town.
There’s a bit of filler, but if you enjoy YA with a mix of sci-fi, mystery, and emotional depth, this one’s worth diving into. Great for fans of found family, small-town secrets, and friendships that don’t quit—even when everything else does.
Thank you to @luciaashta and @podiumentertainment for providing me an ALC and a ARC to review!
I kinda hated this. It came recommended from one of my favorite book accounts on IG so I pushed through even though I should have DNF’d. It was short but took me days to finish. I kept hoping it would get better, it didn’t. The plot is interesting in theory but I hated the writing. All five of the characters had the exact same personality and I couldn’t stand them. I feel bad trashing a book but this one is just not good.
That said, the marketing for this book feels very misleading -it's described as "Stranger Things meets Riverdale in an edgy new-adult series, in which heart-pounding paranormal adventure, slow-burn romance, and a friendship stronger than death converge." This is NOT new-adult. This is NOT anything remotely like Riverdale. The drama and story felt like it was meant for a strictly teen audience, with the exception of some of the language used. Yes, I knew it was about a group of 18-year olds, but I was still expecting the writing to fit into a new adult or even YA category. This book is something I maybe would have enjoyed more when I was a preteen.
While the overall concept had promise, the characters were severely underdeveloped and seemed to have an unexplained chip on their shoulders. While I suppose their "we're better than everyone else, screw the world" attitudes can kind of be attributed to the eventual big reveal of their pasts, this could have been woven in so much more eloquently to make the characters more relatable or even just understandable.
For such a short book, it took way too long to get to the point, and it felt like nothing happened. Yes, two major traumatic events occurred, but the second of these events was so drug out that it lost all sense of suspense. When the mystery is "revealed" it's all done through a huge chunk (pages and pages) of dialogue between the teens and their parents. It would have been so much more interesting to have tiny bits of information revealed piecemeal throughout the story. Instead we get random dialogue and quickly glazed over high school moments that tell us nothing. All moments of "drama" and dialogue between the characters outside of the mystery aspect felt completely irrelevant to both the story and character development. It all felt like meaningless, "edgy" dialogue for the sake of dialogue.
Back to the mystery aspect - the explanation that their parents give them doesn't fully jive with Brady's dreams, which are one of the main sources of the mystery, yet no one questioned it? Perhaps more will come of that later in the series, but it also seems like that may be dropped entirely?
Based on the book's summary, I really thought there would be more mystery and paranormal aspects to the town of Ridgemore itself, but so far the only secrets lie within the core group and have nothing to do with the "sleepy mountain town."
The conclusion of this book was intriguing, and I can see how this is being set up for a series, but it just took too long to get there (and I'm saying this about a book that's under 300 pages). This was also not a paranormal romance. Perhaps the series as a whole will be, especially if it's meant to be a slow-burn, but the small hints of romance between Joss and Griffin were underwhelming.
I recognize that sometimes this happens with first books in a series, and they simply need time to cook (I've experienced this with some of my favorites), so maybe the rest of the series will be more engaging and this will just serve as an introductory book, but as of now I do not know that I'm invested enough to continue.
If you read my reviews regularly then you know I always include warnings for conservative parents. While I love this book immensely it has a lot of f-bombs in it along with other cuss words. Really that is the only thing to worry about. If you have read anything else by Lucia this sci-fi is like nothing she has ever written which is why I really love it. Personally, I'd love to see this as a long series & more in this genre. When 5 high school friends are partying at a incomplete house that was never finished tragedy strikes. There is an accident & someone falls to their death. Students are horrified by the tragedy. When emergency services get there it's already too late. The high schoolers that are closest to the friend convince the paramedics to try to resuscitate once more. Miraculous their friend is alive & rushed to surgery.
When he finally gets out of the hospital everyone starts calling him the, "Miracle Kid". Things get weird for him at home when his mom insists he starts complaining about symptoms he didn't have & acting differently when he was in public. The press started staking out his school & the entrance to the gated community they live in. One of the 5 friends sneaks into her house when they are skipping school. What she finds blows her mind. Her parents have been listening to their conversations in the treehouse. It only gets worse from there.
All of their parents are liars. People are after them. And the why will shock you!
I received a free copy of this book via Podium Team in exchange for an honest review.
Ride and Die is an amazing start to a new series! The book follows five young friends who find out that everything they've believed is a lie. One of them dies but then comes back to life, which sets the group on a thrilling adventure to uncover the truth. They are special kids, though they don’t like being called "miracles."
This book is full of fantasy, adventure, mystery, and even a bit of romance. And the ending? It’s a huge cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more!
I enjoyed the group of friends. Even though they are all so different, they have an amazing bond that makes them work together perfectly. I’m especially hoping one of the friendships turns into something more than just friendship!
At first, their lives seem like typical senior-year drama, but things take a huge turn when they uncover a shocking secret that their parents have been keeping from them. It’s a secret so big that it changes everything.
If you love stories with a mix of science fiction, romance, and adventure, then you’ll enjoy this book!
A group of five high school seniors are best friends. They’ve always done everything together, including training, working out, and even living in close proximity to each other. Sure, they’re fit, but they’ve never thought much of it.
Until one of them dies.
And doesn’t stay dead.
Then the group starts stumbling on secrets their parents are hiding from them, and they realize they may not be so normal after all.
My thoughts: This book was fun! It reminded me nostalgically of Twilight a bit (in a great way, not a sparkly way) with some Vampire Diaries and some Jennifer Armentrout vibes. It has solid teen friendships, secret histories, a mysterious and nefarious outside threat, and the beginnings of a romance.
There’s also a cute little pittie named Bobo.
There’s a lot of action and teamwork and has all the things I really loved as a teen and still enjoy reading about now.
I flew this story and thoroughly and enjoyed every moment of it. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of this series to find out what happens next!
Bridget Bordeau did a good job narrating this one, though the male voices were a little bit of a stretch for her voice
Stranger Things meets Riverdale? I’ll be honest, that drew me in. I don’t mind books geared toward YA readers. Ride and Die is definitely for a younger audience, and I would feel quite comfortable having my teen daughter read this series.
I went from ebook to audiobook, depending on where and what I was doing. Bridget Bordeaux performed the audiobook narration quite well, and I enjoyed listening. Book 1 is short and easy to read, and I moved quickly through the story.
This group of high school teens has been tight-knit friends since they were little, but when unfortunate circumstances happen to one of them, they believe their friend is no longer alive. But he is suspiciously alive, and their families want them to downplay everything. As the story progresses, other peculiarities pop up around town. There’s a cute pit bull dog to balance all the oddities of the going ons—it does remind of a show I grew up watching. Things certainly escalated at the end and left on an intriguing cliffhanger. Book 2 is fortunately out already!
I love this series already. It has a different paranormal concept within it. I won’t give anything away in my review, but this paranormal adventure seems like it could be out of this world. It has a fast-paced, relatable, story line. Lots of twists and turns and two of the characters appear to be heading for some romance. If you’ve read Lucia’s other series, you’ll agree this one is different.
It’s an entertaining story of five best friends who discover they are not what they seem to be. I’m in love with each character already; Lucia’s characters are so well written they always walk off the page to me. I cannot wait for the next book to see what exactly is going on. Where exactly did their powers come from? What other secrets are they going to uncover about themselves? Do they possess other powers? Are they the only ones? Grateful there isn’t too long a wait till the next one…
Wow so much suspense and anticipation . I think the book dragged on a little in the beginning then started taking off at a fast pace and couldn't put it down. I like all the character development. And love all the funny phrases and expressions the 5 main characters of them use, it adds some good humor to the story. I am kind of angry at the parents, but hoping they can work out their differences. I like how this book has more of a sci fi theme to it than a magic theme, i love sci fi stories. I have so may questions which i hope will get answered in the next book. One thing i didn't quite like was a big cliffhanger at the end that will keep us in suspense til the next book gets released.
Five young people discover that everything they know is a lie. One of them dies, and he lives to tell the tale. This leads the friends on an adventure to discover the truth. It turns out, they are miracle kids, but you must not call them that; they do not like it. What is their story, and how can anyone be dead for an hour and rise again? This story will take you on a journey of fantasy, adventure, suspense, and a dash of romance. The ending will leave you hanging from an extremely high cliff. I enjoyed this story and look forward to what comes next in this series. I hate cliffhangers, but that won’t stop me from following the kids who cannot die.
Ok first off i am.so glad Lucia got the recognition she deserves with this book being traditionally published. Second off OMFG this book.was so thrilling and intriguing and just plain epic..I have been reading Lucia for years now but this book is so different from her other series'. Joss and her friends Griffin, Hunt, Layla, and Brady are so fantastic and funny I really love this family, and that's what these kids are, the secrets we find out that their families and the town are keeping was so mysterious. And that cliffhanger ending just wow. I am so excited for the next book to see the aftermath.
2.5. This book was honestly so confusing to read. The overall structure of the book was bad and it didn’t have a real plot. There was literally no climax (unless you count the ending but in my opinion it was still pretty anticlimactic and predictable). A lot of questions were left unanswered but I guess those would probably be answered in a future sequel or something, but honestly I don’t even know if I’d want to read it. The romance was also really iffy 😭 but whatever though?? I have faith that a sequel would be better but I’ll be nice and just think of this book as context for the coming sequel(s)? Also, this is definitely not a romance book 💀 it has like minimal romance in it
I'm not sure the "A Paranormal Romance" designation is applicable here, since the only romance in this book was a lot of pining and "I CANT allow myself to feel that way about him". Still I enjoyed this book a lot. I assume it was inspired by Eleven in Stranger Things.
Some of the guys felt interchangeable, and I'm not buying the parents' explanation that
I'll definitely read the next book in this series when it comes out.
Usually, I'm not a fan of any type of series that involves high school kids, but I went into this with an open mind, and I am so glad I did!
I read this in one all-nighter sitting and I have never been so happy to surrender my much-needed beauty sleep to this new beginning.
The plot thickened! The characters were great. My heart pounded right from Chapter 1 and I was fully committed! The dialogue was somehow mature and still age-appropriate and relatable. These were the coolest teenagers I've ever met and I have kids!
This is the first book I have read by this author. It is the introduction to a new series. Can I just say I will be checking out more of her books?
Keep in mind this is a Sci-Fi and I agree with others that those who like Stranger Things will surely enjoy this tale of friends who have their lives turned upside down after a terrible accident. Everything they thought was truth is turned inside out and the things they knew about themselves, their family, their parents turns out to be a lie.
DNF. First book I have ever started and not finished. Nope. The description of this book and the actual book are drastically worlds apart. Ridiculously ridiculous. How many accidents can a group of 5 teenagers get in to? How many things can go wrong? You lost me at paranormal lake. Nope. Little to no plot, no character development or knowledge other than they’ve been friends, no personality, no connection to the reader. Nope. I won’t be reading anything from this author again. My kids could write a better developed story than this.
Wow! That was suspenseful and fun. The main characters are 5 high school seniors. I’m not big into the high school scene, but they skip school a lot and are trying to prove themselves as adults, so it was all good. They’ve got an unshakeable bond and secret keeping parents. Turns out they might be paranormal and they’re horrible at staying on the down low. Bad guys come. I’m excited for the next book!
OMG what a start to this new series. Five friends who have been together forever, find their world turned upside down as an accident changes everything! Well written, this fast paced, paranormal read draws you in and holds on tight as secrets unfold and they realise that things have been hidden from them. It’s brimming with drama, suspense, intrigued and mystery as we follow these relatable and likeable characters on their discoveries in this little sleepy mountain town!
When 5 teenagers have their worlds turned upside down, there is no going back. Their world is changed forever with one party, and that was all it took. Their friendships made them family, and they looked out for each other. They would need that when their lives started to spin out of control and all the secrets were revealed. This is not your average teenage rebellion. Life is about to get way more dangerous.
Absolutely loved it. Very different to Lucia's previous books and it had me from the start. The storyline in great and the characters are developing well by the end of this chapter. This book does leave you wanting as it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
Wow! This is definitely a different read from Lucia but I must admit after the first chapter I just kept going and really enjoyed the book. It’s about 5 friends, lots of suspense, some humor, a great start to a new series. I’m not fond of cliffhangers but it does make you want to read the next book and draws you into this universe she created.
*Ride and Die* is an electrifying blend of paranormal twists, slow-burn romance, and unshakable friendship. Joss and her crew’s bond is heartwarming, while the mysterious, gritty plot keeps you hooked. Griffin’s brooding charm and the jaw-dropping cliffhanger will leave you desperate for more. A must-read thrill ride!
I liked the storyline of the book but there were weird word abbreviations used. Def, sus, and obvi...I don't know any teenagers that speak like that. It made reading the book a little difficult for me. The abbreviations just didn't seem to fit and it affected the story for me.
This book gripped me right away, the story felt both fresh and new while maintaining the enjoyment Lucia's books always seem to bring. The characters were relatable even in their differences, just well done! Totally recommend if you like fast paced mystery and intrigues.
