Lady Wisteria's greatest wish is to be worthy of the man she loves, Lord Bright. But when Wisteria's little sister, Rosalie, is selected to enter the Predawn Realm as its guardian, never to return, Bright begs Wisteria to take Rosalie's place! After all, Wisteria is skilled with magic, and resistant to the sinister miasma that threatens the mortal world. Heartbroken, Wisteria enters the Predawn Realm, accompanied by the sacred sword, Sartis. Twenty years later, a stranger with a familiar face appears, demanding the sword and challenging Wisteria. Who is he, and why does he resemble Lord Bright...?
If he’s her love interest, they need to QUITE CLEARLY state that he is NOT her nephew.
Also, why is SHE considered a witch when she QUITE CLEARLY sacrificed HERSELF for her sister and the man she loved?
I REALLY don’t like the dude. He is rude and while he looks the same age as her, she’s 20 years older (though not sure how mature she could be if she was in enforced solitude for 20 years. Is her emotional growth stunted? His certainly is. The jerk.), he doesn’t bother to explain himself or hear out what she has to say. He’s right and that’s that!
Talked myself into one less star than I was going to give it, but I HATE the MMC. He’s such a jerk I can’t even. She’s a freaking martyr and he treats her like dirt AND SHE LETS HIM because she is so lonely for human contact. Not her fault, 20 years with only monsters to defeat will do something to a person.
Yes, there very well could be character growth in this, but I’m not sticking around to find out.
1, jerk MMC and possible related love interest BLUGH, stars.

This was just as engaging as the first time I read it…and just as heartbreaking! 😭😭😭
I adore Wisteria's strength even if she says and claims she's selfish. I think she is human like the rest of us and found her feelings to make full sense and were realistic, so she shouldn't berate herself for the feelings she had because, at the end of the day, she still chose to "volunteer as tribute." She could have easily said no and tried to live out the happily ever after she's longed for by Bright's side, but again, she didn't decide to stay. Instead, she cried and went to the predawn realm like the brave woman she was. 😭😭😭 I love her and definitely see why she recently was in the top 10 of female characters from the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2025 Rankings because her actions are incredible and so very inspiring!
I LOVED the sword! He's awesome and really liked the bonus story we got because it shows how he cares for Wisteria in his own grumpy way! Granted, it was already confirmed when Lloyd comes in and demands the sword be handed over to him and the sword's like no way spoiled brat. TELLLLL HIMMMM!!
And speaking of, I'm not a fan of Lloyd. It is such a cruel thing for him to have Bright's face and come into this realm trying to tear down Wisteria! 😭😭😭 I'm not looking forward to him being her disciple and strongly agree with a friend that I am #TeamSword!!
I appreciate the short story at the end and do want to mention that it was extremely well written! Not saying other bonus short stories aren't, but this one just stood out to me for some reason.
Overall, I loved loved loved this first volume! I'm going to be cheering on Wisteria with all that I am moving forward!!
While I have no investment yet in the central romance, the art is gorgeous and the premise is interesting enough that I want to continue. I was also pleasantly surprised by how much I didn't dislike the sister and original unrequited love interest. In a story like this, it'd be easy to make those side characters the bad guys, but it was much more nuanced than that.
I was expecting an unpleasant note to this story from the title alone, but what we actually got was worse than I expected.
Spoilers ahead, sorry but only way to cover the ick.
Orphan girl gets adopted by power nobility. Childhood friend is her first love but he's unintentionally leading her on and has eyes only for the little sister from the adoption family.
(Skipping salt on wound details here and years of one sided pining.)
Bad luck bears and little sister (16) is picked for human sacrificing and boy (24) tries to save her by any means possible. Only option is for someone to volunteer to take her place, no one is willing. Boy asks the adopted older sister (20) to do it, thus heartbreak to a whole new level.
Orphan girl agrees and on her way to the death dimension a magic sword decides to join her to help keep her alive. On the other side she discovered her job is to babysit some tree that for some reason burps poison when awake. Lucky her she's the first and only person to have enough immunity to this poison to survive.
Also for some reason exposure freezes her aging and she's there for 23 years.
Suddenly she's forced to have heartbreak again because a gate opens and suddenly the spring image of her crush shows up only to reveal he's actually the 20 something year old child of her crush and sister there only for her sword.
So now there's supposed to be a romance developed between a 43 year old and a 20 something with a terrible personality and Uber cringy parentage? ICK!
This is actually a super interesting and fascinating start to the story! I don’t normally like fantasy manga but this one is really exciting because of the plot.
And I saw that the top liked review mentions potential incest. YALL. She is ADOPTED so she is not blood related to her sister. It is said so many freaking times in the book. ☠️☠️☠️☠️ Why can’t people read????
Edit: raising this to 5 stars bc the overall rating should be higher. I liked this so much!!
Oh this one was a bit depressing, the main character was so downtrodden and passive. And I don’t like how the rest of the story line is being set up. Also, language-wise, the dialogue and inner thoughts seemed so awkward and stilted. Just not for me.
I expected more for this story, based on the premise, than I got.
I didn't find the characters particularly likable and therefore I was not invested in their story. The world building was the best part of this story as it was actually fairly interesting. However the plot was also lacking. I'm hoping this is just due to it being the first volume and they are busy setting everything up and things might kick off in volume 2.
I ended up being a bit disappointed with it and I don't think I'll be continuing with the second volume.
Be honest I have my doubt of this story being classified as Light Novel. It is not so light in my point of view and it suits readers who prefers serious plots.
The depth of ML's character is quite different from many of LN I have read, he is no Prince Charming, in fact the encounter of ML and FL is rather unpleasant to some. With the storyline we will see more of what leads to who he is. His past, his goal and his determination are so very human, which attracts me.
FL is not a perfect girl either, but with her small selfishness, sometimes negative thoughts, and yet she had made her choice to give herself in for the sake of her crush and family, it is just like what we have to face in real life at some point. We are human who are weak, who are selfish, who are greedy, but we are also willing to sacrifice for the sake of our loved ones.
As if the circumstance is not difficult enough between FL and ML, the non-blood related setting plus "fiancée-wannabe" have been added on top of their age gap. And yet, I can see how these two beautiful souls slowly connected together despite all the hardships.
This story is not for light-hearted, but besides the relationship between MCs, I also enjoyed the battle scenes, the magic, and the mysterious sacred sword.
The starting scene is with Wisteria running into an old crush, Lord Bright. She hasn't seen him in years since she was asked to be banished to an older worldly realm in her younger sister's place. It was no other than Lord Bright who asked her to do this, as Lord Bright actually loves her younger sister.
It then skips to the past and provides the context of how Wisteria ended up taking her sister's place, then the end of this novel jumps back to the present, starting scene. I was enjoying the story-- the art was lovely. The romance could be somewhat questionable since Lord Bright is the sister's husband, but maybe Lord Bright and the sister are happier if they aren't together. I'm optimistic such a love story doesn't end up harming characters or relationships. Unfortunately, it turns out that the man who appears as Lord Bright is NOT ACTUALLY Lord Bright but in fact HIS SON. It's been 23 years since Wisteria has been sent off to the realm, and Lord Bright and the sister's son shows up in the otherworldly realm to stop Wisteria the witch and reclaim an ancient sword relic that she stole. I'm sorry. I just can't have the romantic interest be the SON of the first crush. I can't root for this. He's her NEPHEW! I did frantically google for some better explanation, as the ending of this book didn't go into any more detail. But apparently he is not a blood relation, as Wisteria is adopted and her sister is a step sister (I knew Wisteria was adopted but the book didn't make it clear that the sister was not adopted). I still don't think that makes it much better, as there is still a 23 year age difference between the two characters, and Wisteria is still knowledgeable that he is her nephew, even if she never saw him growing up. Wisteria also may have not visibly aged due to being stuck in the other worldly realm, so she still looks 20, but nonetheless she is a 43 year old vs. her 23 year old nephew love interest. I just can't. The story was fine and again I loved the art. The ancient sword relic is actually a sentient sword and I love sentient swords! But I just can't with this love story. T.T
This was a lot. It has a lot of the traditional genre tropes like downtrodden, sacrificial MC who is overshadowed by her sister, doomed in love, but is also an absolute sweetheart and secretly really powerful/kind/wonderful. What this story does differently to most of the others I've read in the genre, is that all the characters have mixed motivations and layers to their actions. They're not 2D villains and heroines who are evil or good just for the sake of being those things. Nobody seems to be trying to take over the world or release a devil or any other dastardly thing.
From there, it gets a bit weird - in a good way. The ML turns out to be the MC's nephew and the spitting image of her first love (they're not blood related), and the main story takes place 20 years into the future after the MC has been banished to another world and the story of her sacrifice has been twisted to fit a new narrative where she's a witch and she deserved her exile, rather than being a voluntary act of love for her sister and love interest. There's a talking holy sword for reasons unknown. And the ML, Lloyd, seems to be a bit of a genius sociopath, so that's a real vibe.
Ultimately, my view of this series will heavily depend on the ending. I'm 4 volumes deep and whilst I'm invested, it's definitely unfolding at a snail's pace, and I'm not really on board with the main romance so much as I just want Wisteria to get exonerated and find some kind of happiness after all her pain. I'm mostly sticking around for Lloyd to find out how badly his parents wronged her in the past, and to see them do something cool with magic back in the original world which hasn't really accepted or brought either of them happiness.
I enjoyed the premise, and I didn't expect to find the relationship between Bright, Wisteria, and Rosalie to be so complex. From the title I was expecting a one-dimensional sister and a one-dimensional "person I loved," but they had depth and complex feelings. I will be reading the next volume just to see what happens next.
A pretty original plot. The main character is sent to "die" in another world as a protection for the human world. She goes in her sister's stead, to protect both her sister and her lifelong crush (who is in love with said sister). She is chosen by Sartis - a magical sword - just before leaving, therefore takes it with her. With the help of that sword as her sole companion, she survives and endures that world for 23 years before another human appears. That human is the son of her lifelong love interest which not only brings back memories of her past life but also a suite of unwanted emotions. Lloyd (the son) has his own troubles and is a jerk (to start). While it's debatable if a romance between them is appropriate, she has the emotional romantic maturity of a sixteen year old, while being wise in other ways, as he has had lots of girlfriends but needs a lot of work in all emotional matters. They will surely affect each other deeply and I like that. Sartis the sword is the best character!
Interesting. I was not expecting the male lead to be the SON of her 'love' and sister. It's a bit creepy ngl, I'll continue it for now since I already checked out the other volumes, but Idk how to feel about it. A part of me is grossed out, another part is like, well, Twilight and others, since she hasn't aged. Idk, the familial ties are a bit too close though. Did appreciate the fact that her adopted family was genuinely kind. My immediate thought was I was gonna hate the sister, but Rosalie's sweet. Bright was meh. Like, girl, why did you crush on him for so long? And their son is rude af. Also, he never answered why tf he's there in the first place. Why tf do you need the sword? And why are you calling her a witch? Without her sacrifice, you wouldn't fucking exist. Did Rosalie and Bright not let him in on that little fact??
The heroine is a tragic character, with a bit of steel to her spine, and some amazing magic abilities. But all the male heroes in this first book were pretty much trash. The men who work in the magical lab seemed fine - if only we had more time with them than the truly stupid nobles.
Not sure I want to continue with this one, since the heroine definitely deserves better from these people, but I do kind of want to know more about her past and her magical abilities.
And, on the plus side, it does have a snarky sentient sword.
Ended up liking it a bit more then I thought! I thought this was going to be one of those "Turn back time" or "Reincarnated into my younger self" type of stories, but it's very much not! The plot pacing it a little rough at points, but it appears like it's trying to do the entire series set-up in a single volume. The magic system for this story is actually pretty interesting! I don't think I've seen a magic system like it before, which instantly makes me want to read more about it. The art is gorgeous, I love how pretty everything is.
Here we have another fantasy shoujo manga spun around romance. The artwork is passable but rather generic. The title feels poorly chosen for this narrative. The time jump within the first volume makes all of her turmoil before taking up residence in the Land Before Dawn rather moot since decades have passed. Maybe it wanted shock value for the audience but the sequence feels jarring on execution.

Wow a heartbroken heroine when her sister and the guy aren't bad guys. I like that but I do feel sad for her and that bonus story is sad too! How cruel! The art is lovely, the story is a maybe interesting. I'd like to read another to learn more about where the story is going. But her love interest isn't this new guy right? Also why does no one but the sword seem to give a f about her? Her sister let her sacrifice herself.
I'm not sure how I feel about this yet but I'll give the series a chance and read the next volume. I'm concerned that the boy that seems to be the love interest is her nephew so hopefully that's NOT true if they continue with him. I also don't care for Lloyd he seems like a spoiled asshole
I liked it? I think? Hahaha I’m not sure what I was expecting but her having a possible romantic connection with the son of the original dude she was in love with 23 years prior wasn’t on the bingo card 😂
Whoa, Wisteria's family are a-holes and Bright is forever on my shit list for making her sacrifice herself in her sister's stead. I do like the premise so far, but am hoping the ML is not actually her nephew...cus ew. Hopefully we find out more sooner rather than later.

this had so much potential, I love the magic and world building/ time period but WHY does the love interest have to insinuate that they are related… nephew of all things!! absolutely not. and he’s so much younger technically… completely ruined this for me 😭
