A Trinket Could Unleash a Tempest

Locklyn Adair thought that finding the Sea Enchantress would lift her family’s curse. But the ramifications of her desire for a tail reach further than she could ever have dreamed. Now the entire Undersea Realm is in peril, as Circe, armed with the locket capable of controlling the Loch Ness monster, journeys to the North Sea in pursuit of revenge.

Darin Aalto’s specialty is tracking down treasure. When it looks as though a magical locket has fallen into evil hands, he joins Locklyn and her crew on an expedition to recover it, hoping to find a key to his past identity along the way. Despite having no memory of the Mermaid leading the quest, he wonders if she was more than a friend all along.

As a vengeful enchantress, fiery monster, and impending war threaten the Undersea Realm, Locklyn and Darin must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stop the locket’s revenge.

L.E. Richmond was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest by an American writing teacher and a German bookseller. Her childhood consisted in a large part of imagining stories for her PLAYMOBIL characters and checking out as many books from the library as her family could fit on six library cards. Now she spends her time chasing three little Muggles, reading aloud to the hazel-eyed young man who has her heart, and attempting to transfer the stories in her head into words for others. Her passion is for words and stories that thrill the soul, and she is endlessly amazed by the One who not only used words to bring this world into being but also crafted the most epic story of all time.

Great story! I enjoyed the Christian elements and the characters' journeys. My only complaint is that I feel like this did not need to be a duology. Both books were short enough to have been combined into one volume, which would also have eliminated the cliffhanger ending of the first book. The audiobook is well done.

Oh man, oh man! It's finally here! The conclusion to the duology! How I wished there were more in the series.

Y'all know that cliffhanger on the last book was killer. I've been dying to get my paws on this one. It took a little longer than I'd have liked, but such is life sometimes.

Richmond has created an undersea adventure packed with action, intrigue, and romance. It seemed something new was coming at every turn. I loved that she kept me guessing about what was next. Of course, we knew the general vicinity we were headed toward: stop the sea witch from letting out the big giant sea monster that would destroy all the underwater realm. But this poor team of heroes and do-gooders bumped into quite the series of obstacles.

Speaking of, the cast of characters really makes this book so much fun. The dynamics between each of them are strong and create a variety I enjoyed as a reader. I will say, I did forget a fair amount from the first book so I struggled with remembering some of the side characters a little as I read. I'd suggest reading the two closer together than I did (and not just because of the cliff hanger). I think I would have benefitted from a more recent memory of the first book.

But the world is fascinating (says the mermaid aficionado). I loved getting to see the other kingdoms, the wilderness, and the creatures. The different cultures were so well done. And Richmond doesn't pull punches with the plot. Some stuff went down I was not quite prepared for! I also definitely enjoyed some of the newer characters as well as the returning ones.

And of course, we left book 1 off with a certain merman having lost his memory. It was interesting to see how that impacted his character and the way he behaved with the others. We also have the question of which romantic ships are gonna go which way. I'm satisfied to say that I got my way on multiple counts XD

All in all, a lovely conclusion to the set!

Content: some fantasy violence, clean romance, no foul language. Suitable for teens.

SIMPLY STUNNING! 😍
We all know how hard it can be to find a five star reads sometimes, but to find one that ignites your heart on fire for your Savior at the same time? Well let me just say it's been a minute too long.

I've kept up with Ms. L.E. Richmond since before the release of The Mermaid's Tale (because who am I kidding, a Christian mermaid story, yes please!) and I was so, so excited to see the resolve of the killer cliffhanger from The Mermaid's Tale. But I don't think I was prepared for this book (so get ready world).

RIP my sleep because the past two days have been a tennis court of me waffling between this book and my responsibilities. I found myself in tears at points, this book is so strongly written! The characters have all the hard choices of life with all the realistic components while allowing the Light of the world to shine through in a spectacular tale you will not be able to put down. This is the perfect summer read.

This book has:
🌺 A super realistic villian (with a backstory you need to hear)
🥥 Forgotten identity
⭐️ A strong female mc (who still has flaws)
🐟 A beautiful friend group
🌺 High stake action
🥥 Realistic injuries
⭐️ Allegorical references (Wave Master=God)
🐟 Themes of fear, death, hope, and overcoming all (Philippians 4:13)
🌺 That gasp when the title is seamlessly threaded in

Overall, this is a read I will not soon forget, and I'll need a physical copy asap so I can highlight all this gorgeous quotes. If this isn't on your tbr you might want to reconsider.
If you're looking for a book you will not be able to put down, that backs your faith this is the book.

A warm thank you to the author and her publishers for the free ARC, I was not required to leave a positive review but it was too good not to :)

*This is a rushed review, might be back later to style it up hehe*

4.5 ⭐️

I loved this one more than the first book! The world building was again excellent and we got to see a lot more of it! Again, the mini plot twists abounded and especially in the last quarter: I was shocked repeatedly on how things went!

The romance was way better in this one, probably for a spoilery reason! There was still a love square going on at the beginning that was annoying but it eased off and the overall romance outcome was what it should be. I will say the first kiss could have had more build up because I was like wait...this is the first kiss?? Also there were a few times that the emotional side of things I think could have been stronger.

The best qualities of this book definitely were the world building and the plot twists, some of the best I've ever read!

After reading The Mermaid's Tale in May, The Locket's Revenge became one of my most anticipated sequels of 2024.

"We'll make new memories . . . Memories for both of us."

The romance is exceptional. I'm a huge fan of duel POV, and Laura utilizes it so well in book 2. The romance doesn't dominates the plot (there's a lot going on), but I love the main couple so much that they were never far from my mind. I always anticipated the next time I'd see them on page together. In my opinion, that's the sign of a great romance. If you're looking for a pure, sweet romance that just gives you all the warm, fuzzy feelings, Chronicles of the Undersea Realm should be the next duology you read.

Once again, I have to highlight Laura's writing. It's just spectacular. From page one, I was completely immersed in this underwater world. The descriptions captivated me. The dialog packs a punch whether it's a romantic revelation, a snappy comeback, or a witty remark. It's beautiful writing without being purple prose. If you enjoy Elizabeth Lim or Rebecca Ross, I think you'd love Laura's writing style.

Last, I loved the ending. It was so so satisfying. Obviously I can't say too much without spoiling the story, but I can say-for me- it didn't disappoint. At one of the crucial scenes near the end, I got misty eyed because the sacrificial actions touched my heart. I cried for the character's loss, but I so respected their choice. If I were given the same opportunity, I hope I would make a similar choice. The kind of choice that shows a love for others above myself. There's no way readers, especially Christian readers, will read this scene and not feel an overwhelming sense of Christ's unconditional love.

An incredibly huge thank you to Laura and Enclave Publishing for sending me an e-arc of The Locket's Revenge. It surpassed all my expectations, and all the above opinions are my own. I cannot wait to see what Laura writes next!

Clean YA Fantasy

"We'll make new memories . . . Memories for both of us."

I was a huge fan of the first book, but this one was underwhelming for me. I wanted to like it so much unfortunately I found it hard to connect to the story and was kinda bored honestly. The romance seemed totally different and I didn’t feel like I was reading the same characters. Something was off… or maybe it was just me. I definitely will continue to check this author out, her writing is great just wasn’t invested as much in this particular storyline.

The setting for this book is honestly the main thing that kept me reading it... That, and Ginevra. (Ginevra is probably my favorite character out of the duology, so good job to the author for that because it takes a lot for me to enjoy strong female characters. 😂😭)
The ending really made my rating take hit, though. The way the Wavemaster comes in and just gives them anything they want kinda bugged me? It felt like the story just used him as an easy way out... And the ending was extremely underwhelming as well. Michal's death was more for shock value than anything.
And I still just wasn't invested in Darin and Locklyn's whole thing??
Either way, it's not like the book was bad, but it just fell a little flat for me. 😅

I’ve been waiting so long for this book…and it was so worth it!! The storyline is incredible, and there is so much happening, even on page 1! Watching Darin work to help his friends even though he had lost his memories was so beautiful. He cares so much for them, and because of his loss, he was able to truly see Locklyn and become the man he was meant to be. I loved seeing their happy ending, but I would look for every dangerous and life-threatening adventure they could have if it meant getting to see their love unfold through their actions.

It was great to return to the Undersea Realm and pick up where book 1 left off. This book was fast paced, and had many twists and turns that kept me guessing about who was friend or foe. As Locklyn and Darin battled with their own personal quests they teamed up with their new friends to help save the whole undersea realm from destruction.

Locklyn and Darin both fight to stop Circe from destroying Atlantis with the locket. Locklyn discovers friendships, how strong she really is, and what it is she truly wants. Darin, while searching for his memories, comes to realize that he may not know who he is anymore but understands who he wants to be and what is most important to him. With themes of revenge, family, friendship, sacrifice, and hope, this conclusion to the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm was exactly what I hoped for.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from L.E. Richmond and Enclave Publishing. I was not required to provide a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

This story was fun. I appreciate how well you are immersed in the undersea realm. Being underwater seems the most natural thing in the world! I would recommend reading this quickly after the first book, as I was confused multiple times in the story. Locklyn's POV was told in the first person, whereas Darin's POV was told in the third person.

The Locket’s Revenge, by L. E. Richmond

When I read book one, I was immediately intrigued by the character development, the creativity of the undersea world, and the continued representation of good and evil. Even though it drove me crazy because the second book was months from being released, the final cliffhanger was done exceptionally well.
Finally, book two is here, and the saga continues with all the characters recognizing that good done with the wrong motivation doesn’t necessarily end well; not giving up and learning how to adapt and accept becomes the motto of this book. There are several aspects of good versus evil, and I love how both are dealt with, even amid loss. I especially appreciated the sibling relationship between Ginvera and her sisters and how well Darin deals with his own loss. I am sure those who love fantasy and mermaids will love this duo.

I received an early copy of this book from the publisher and asked to give an honest review.

Loving the first book in this duology, I was hopeful and excited for the sequel. I did not expect I would love The Locket's Revenge even more than The Mermaid's Tale.

It was wonderful to rejoin the lives of favorite characters from the first book. The high-stakes, fast-paced adventure kept me locked in from the start. I rejoiced with the characters' triumphs and mourned with their trials. (I seriously cried about 4 times, both from happiness and sadness.)

Although some permanent losses are suffered along the way, the journey's finale left me joyful and at peace.

The plot kept me engaged and fully invested in the adventures of Locklyn and company. There was one plot element that didn't make sense to me, but I did read The Locket's Revenge rather quickly, so I probably just missed something. :) While the events of the climax made sense and were also utilized for the characters' arcs, it could feel a little bit like a deux ex machina to some readers.

The characters are just as likable (or unlikeable) as they are in the first book. I liked the sisters-element that Richmond wove in with Ginvera's sisters. Positive sibling relationships in books always make me smile.

I have mixed feelings about the love triangle/square in the series. Love triangles aren't my favorite trope in the first place, but this one just felt a little too predictable. However, your reading mileage will likely vary depending on how you feel about that trope. :)

Overall, The Locket's Revenge is a solid conclusion to Richmond's mermaid duology.

Content: moderate romance; one kiss; non-graphic moderate violence *

2.5 stars. I'm rounding it up to 3 stars on Goodreads to be gracious, but I was let down by the ending of this book.

There was some plot armor that I found really annoying.

More than one important part of the plot was solved by deus ex machina.

There's a pointless character death that I really hated.

Wow! I learned so much about humanhood, ironically, from a book about mermaids. This book had so much heart and wisdom. I can feel the author’s care and love for God wound through the words. This book was not only stock full of action, but of real life lessons for us. The allegory of faith in this book was so strong, I will probably think on these lessons for a while.

When I was waiting for this second book to release, I don’t think I anticipated this story going the way it did at all. But because it did, I feel so incredibly grateful. I feel like there was an innumerable amount of lessons to be learned about family, community, our relationship with God and so much more.

One of the biggest lessons I took away is that sometimes if we strip away our own minds and desires, we can hear God better and even see those around us in a new light. I felt this in Darin’s story and it is probably something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Another visual that really stuck with me was that of Jesus blocking me from the fire and healing me, but not the way I maybe had envisioned but the way He sees me in His love. Oh, the allegory was so beautifully rich and truly enriched my faith as I read.

The one thing I will say is there is a dark magic element to this story. However, because I feel it also feels like an allegory for the darkness in our world, it isn’t just in there to be in there. (Disclaimer: magic in fantasy doesn’t bother me, but I know others might be more sensitive to that material.) It isn’t a major part, but rather the villain uses it.

I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy fairytale retellings, romance, fantasy, and faith filled heart. Overall though, I definitely recommend this series as a whole. I don’t feel the story is really complete until the second book is read, but man, WHAT a journey!

Well, that was sweet?

I don’t know, I may drop this another star (drops from 4 to 3). I absolutely could not wait to receive this book. The cliffhanger at the end of A Mermaid’s Tale had me entranced and anticipating the release of the sequel.

However, the unexpected twist at the end of the last book (*cough*, Darin’s memory loss, *cough*) was one of the plot points that I was really anticipating would be resolved well in this book. The way it was resolved was not satisfactory for me, unfortunately 🥲.

I’ve given this a lot of thought and what bothers me the most about the fact that he doesn’t regain his memory is the fact that he doesn’t really undergo true character development. Sure, he is no longer arrogant like he was before, but that’s simply because he doesn’t remember who he was before. Likewise, he is attracted and infatuated with Locklyn like before, but not because of the reasons that he was in love with her before for. I genuinely enjoyed the romance more in A Mermaid’s Tale, in this book, it felt like a completely different romance because of Darin’s memory loss. I would’ve liked to see his character development as he was before, and I would’ve liked to see him slowly transformed into the character he was by the end of The Locket’s Revenge.

There were also various plot points throughout the story that I did not enjoy as much as I liked the first book. I did love the inclusion of The Wave Master and it was almost allegorical at the end. And I really liked the fact that Darin and Locklyn got their happy ending, I just didn’t like the way it got there. Their romance felt very anti-climatic for me.

However, I recognize this personal preference. Unfortunately, due to this personal preference my enjoyment of this book was severely limited.

I do look forward to reading more from this author in the future, and I will be revisiting this series sometime in the future as well!

An unexpected and satisfying end to a beautiful duology!

I truly feel like the L.E. Richmond has a gift for believably presenting characters' emotional states and how those emotions affect their actions and relationships. I also loved how there was not a pat answer to every problem, or an instant "happily ever after". Even as the book draws to a close, we see various characters still have some growth and trials ahead of them, but they are now changed and ready to face them. And the scene with the Wave Master! All book long I'd been thinking about how there appeared to be a loophole in Locklyn's deal with Circe that would get her out of the future favor she promised, and sometimes felt frustrated it was never brought up. But then I got to the scene with the Wave Master, which never would have happened if the loophole had been a thing, and that made it all worth it. Such a beautiful representation of how knowing God is better than anything this life can offer us, and one that also provoked questions of what I would consider worth losing for the sake of knowing Christ.

I gave it four stars instead of five because I'm admittely super nitpicky about books. I missed the larger roles Conway, Ginevra, and other side characters played in the first book. Also, the words on the locket changed between book one and book two (assuming the locket we read about being forged in book two is the same locket). And do the other characters who got tails at the end of book one keep them? I wish we were told whether they do or not.

Those little things, however, do not stop me from wholeheartedly recommending this book.

The Locket’s revenge is a fast paced adventure that delivers a very satisfying ending to the story begun in The Mermaid’s Tale. I actually liked the sequel even more than the first part, which is not often the case. The book is well written and suspenseful, and it took a real effort of will to abandon it and go to my Bible study, because I just wanted to keep listening. It is a page turner, and I enjoyed the undersea world - but it is the characters and relationships that were the book’s greatest strength in my opinion. In Locklyn and Circe we see two completely different responses to suffering and rejection. While Circe’s deep-seated bitterness and lack of forgiveness threaten the entire undersea realm, Locklyn has not allowed the rejection she has experienced to harden her heart. The characters are well written and touching, and in some ways it was the side plots that touched me particularly. Beck’s love for his brother, Michal’s love for her sisters, Locklyn’s love for her nephews and nieces, though not taking up that many pages, imbue the book with a compelling tenderness. The author touches with a light hand on the topics of bitterness, loss, rejection, sacrifice, friendship, loyalty, and - more predominantly in this sequel than in the first book - on faith in the one who created the heavens and the earth. There is a sweet and tender love story, but I did particularly appreciate that the greatest sacrifices were not made in the name of romantic love, and sometimes in opposition to the interests of romantic love, choosing to do what is right, come what may.

I’m trying to decide how I feel after this one. It was good but I guess I feel slightly let down by how some things turn out.

One thing I’m thrilled with is Darin’s development and that this book has people behaving more like adults than angsty teens. I just expected things that either didn’t pan out at all or didn’t go how I thought .

The other thing that bothered me was that there were almost too many things going on. At one point there are at least three problems at one time! Like, can’t they catch a break?! And don’t get me started on how many times people are clobbered and captured.

But these are still an amazing cast of characters playing out their story against an increase backdrop of a world with some significant lessons and themes; sacrifice being the biggest one. I would have loved some more “after” to see how things turn out. That all felt a bit rushed but it is a satisfying ending even if it wasn’t what I expected.

All in all I definitely liked book one better (cliff hanger ending and all) but this is a great duology and I’m very impressed with what Richmond created!!! Well done! I honestly think I feel so conflicted because of how amazing it is. I know it sounds like I don’t like this book but that is absolutely not true. It’s just kind of… bittersweet might be a good word. I think I will have to reread at some point and see if I can make more sense of what I'm feeling :)

It's a race against time to save the undersea...

Oh what a story this was! The Locket's Revenge is everything I had anticipated after reading the first Chronicles Of The Undersea Realm book – and a whole lot more. L.E. Richmond's storytelling and worldbuilding were every bit as vivid and skilled and I was so immersed in the story that there were times I was almost surprised I breathed air instead of seawater.

The Locket's Revenge is the second half of the Chronicles Of The Undersea Realm duology which is, in my reading experience, a surprisingly unique Little Mermaid retelling – well maybe more of a nod than a direct retelling. I love fairytale retellings of many varieties but I have to say that the choice L.E. Richmond made to twine the familiar Little Mermaid tale within a YA fantasy adventure story instead of focusing on it was rather genius.

Anyway, The Locket's Revenge is a must read for any Christian/Clean fantasy fan whether they be 12 or a few decades more. It is a satisfying conclusion to the Chronicles Of The Undersea Realm duology that really amps up the danger and excitement as the stakes are even higher than in book one. L.E. Richmond really nailed it with these books and I sincerely hope to see her name on more book covers in the future....

It is the life we live, rather than the body in which we live it, that Is of true value.

This book picks up right where THE MERMAID’S TALE ends. And wow does it deliver. Book one does end on a cliffhanger, and I was thrilled the author doesn’t waste any time in moving right into this continued adventure with even more stakes, twists, and surprises. I did appreciate the author working in some great reminders of the first book’s key points. Even though it has only been a month since I read book one, it’s been a year since it was released.

Locklyn, Darin and company are back. En route to stopping the sea witch from releasing destruction. The plot moves fast and I am still a fan of the characters. Even the villains. Each are so well done and there is a great variety in personalities. The dual POV carries the story to different levels. Especially with both he and Locklyn’s differences. For fear of spoilers, I don’t want to say much else, but know you are in for one amazing adventure.

Definitely start with book one, THE MERMAID’S TALE, so you have the history and character’s motivations. This is a great series that has adventure, heart, mermaids, monsters, and so much more!

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, The Mermaid’s Tale, so I was really excited to dive back into this world and revisit all of these amazing characters. While I enjoyed the first book in the series more, I still very much had a wonderful time reading this story.

We pick up right where we left off and L.E. Richmond does a great job of recapping what had happened without actually recapping what had happened. It all flowed very nicely and I genuinely appreciated that.

I genuinely had no idea where L.E. Richmond was going to take us next. There were twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting throughout the novel, and I couldn’t wait to figure out how it would all be resolved.

I also really loved seeing each of the character’s growth throughout. You can tell that the journey they went on had changed them–and it was incredible to see them grow and adapt together. I remember in the first novel there was a lot of disconnect between the characters and seeing them work as a team in this book was incredibly satisfying.

Overall, I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Christian YA fantasy.

I had received a copy of the book as part of the Celebrate Lit Blogging Team and was required to give an honest review.

The cover is beautiful yet a little creepy. I liked this one better than the first one although I don’t like the memory loss trope. But it worked in this book. Locklyn went through so much in this book she should be dead. It got a little unrealistic and annoying. Darin was a lot better in this book and I actually liked him. I did think it was a little fast for him to fall in love with Locklyn after he didn’t remember her. I didn’t like the way his memory loss was wrapped up. Conway and Ginvera were better too. Again, the descriptions of being underwater and in their world was very good. The faith content was way better in this book and I enjoyed that aspect accept for the part with the Wavemaster at the end. It was like God was a genie and that didn’t sit right with me at all. Once again, it was still more violent and darker than I would have liked. There are quite a few merpeople who die. One of which I really hate and didn’t really see the need of it at all. It just felt mean. I felt like the ending wrapped up too neatly. I might be the only one, but I felt like it should have been a trilogy instead of only two books. Overall, I liked it. 3.5 stars.

This story resumes immediately after the first one ended and, not having read the latter, I felt at a disadvantage knowing what was going on for much of the initial third of it. I’m figuring the duology drew its inspiration from The Little Mermaid and the author did a great job describing her underwater world. It was strange having everyone swimming under the water rather than walking or running on land but the author draws you into her underwater realm very well.

Even after the first third of the story, I struggled to enjoy it. I wondered if a longer first story might have been a better way to conclude it. I felt the story was being dragged out and I was often a little bored. I didn’t really connect with Locklyn and Darin, the love interest, and found their love a little forced.

There was some good humour, and the bad guys were sufficiently dastardly, but the tension and suspense never really reached beyond a basic level.

I did enjoy the faith element. The Wave Master, an underwater Jesus-type, was repeatedly mentioned through the story and when he finally makes an appearance good things happen.

Richmond writes well, clearly has a strong imagination, and creates solid characters, if not ones you really want to cheer for.

This is book two of the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm series. Beware of spoilers for book one.

This book picks up right after the end of book one. We get to see Locklyn’s reaction to Darin losing his memories, and then how they go forward in completing their quest. Can they defeat the evil Sea Enchantress, Circe, before it’s too late for Atlantis?

It’s finally here!! The conclusion of the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm! And y’all. This book was so good! The characters were so likable, the setting is wonderful, the writing was great and overall this is just a really great book. I even found my self tearing up there in the end. And the romance! The romance was sooo sweet and I’m very happy with the outcome. 🥰 Laura did a beautiful job wrapping up this story, and I highly recommend this series for anyone looking for a good fantasy story!

Is it wrong to love the second book more than the first? 🥲
First of all, this has been a great under the sea adventure. The world building is not too much but will make you feel as if you are experiencing Locklyn's world first hand. Loved all the characters (Conway😉😁) and how fast paced it is.
The cover is so pretty, and the story is beautiful ❤️
Definitely worth having a physical copy on the shelf. 🧜‍♀️
Can't wait for more new stories from the author!

I loved the start of L E Richmond's Chronicles of the Undersea Realm series, The Mermaid's Tale. I was excited to have the opportunity to continue Locklyn and Darin's s story in The Locket's Revenge. Since this is the second addition to the series, I advise for other readers to read the books in order to have a better reading experience. I enjoyed once again immersing myself into this magical world. I loved every single page that took no time for me to read.

I am giving The Locket's Revenge five stars. I highly recommend it for fans of clean fantasy fiction and / or fairy tale retellings. I would love to see another installment from the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm series.

I received a copy of L E Richmond's The Locket's Revenge from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

Locklyn and the rest of the crew continue their adventure in the second (and last) book of the Chronicles of the Undersea Realm. It picks right up where the last book left off, with the discovery of Circe's intentions after acquiring the locket...

This was a very well-done finale to this duology! It was fast-paced, fun, and full of adventure. There was never a dull moment, and I was continually impressed by the plot. The characters are just as lovable as the first book and continue to grow with each adversity they encounter. I especially loved the relationship seen with Ginevra and her sisters, so heartwarming. The romance subplot came to a beautiful resolution. I really loved the inclusion of faith, specifically with the Wave Master. This was done more so in this book than the first, and I thought it was great! Overall, very impressed with this whole series!
