A good murder mystery. Jonny has just arrived Iin town and finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He becomes a murder suspect, but having been absolved, assists Special Agent Sutton in finding the murderers. A complex case as more deaths follow with unexpected revelations. Good storyline and characters with action throughout. Highly recommended. I received an ARC copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was pitched on FB as being something that Reacher fans would love, so I gave it a try.
The quality of the written language is decent. Not great, but good enough to keep me reading, at first.
First off-putting thing: The author seems to have "borrowed" the Reacher template almost completely. Ex-military guy with a sense of right and wrong with no fixed address roaming around and finding trouble. Ok, he made the character latino instead of anglo, but the formula is the same as the Reacher books. Not big on originality.
Second off-putting thing: Early on in the story, Jonny encounters a couple of unpleasant characters in a bar. He sees a "don't tread on me flag" on the bar wall and thinks to himself "just the kind of people I like treading on" (or words to that effect) without any further explanation. So, either the author decided to make Jonny ignorant of the meaning and history of the Gadsden flag, or the author is himself lacking in historical knowledge.
Third off-putting thing: After an incident that brought DEA agents into the picture, Jonny offers to help out in the investigation and the female agent agrees almost immediately and even provides Jonny with a car and a gun! This is almost laughably ridiculous and unrealistic.
Final straw: Jonny follows someone and decides to bring the DEA-supplied Glock 28 with him as he approaches. "I unzipped my backpack, pulled out the gun, and made sure the safety was off and this baby was ready to fire." With this statement, the author revealed that he writes about things that he has no knowledge of, and doesn't research. Glock pistols do NOT have a safety lever. Never have. This made national news when Glocks came out and was quite controversial.
That's when I stopped reading. I will not be finishing this book.
Never Look Back A Jonny Mendez Thriller Book 1 Andre Gonzalez
Wow! I did not know that Andre Gonzalez had it in him. I have read all his other science fiction/futuristic novels and thought that was his writing style. Then along came Never Look Back. Again, I say Wow!
This is a thriller in a style I have not encountered recently. The main character, Jonny Mendez becomes realer and realer with each page I turn. He is one tough dude that I would only want to meet if he was on my side. One scary dude.
As in the style of Andre Gonzelez you want to keep reading. You need to know what is going to happen next. You become one with some of the characters and want to live alongside them.
Now I have to wait till next year to find out what happens next to Jonny Mendez. You can be sure that once that book becomes available, I will read it immediately.
If you have never read any book by Andre Gonzalez or if you have only read his others, pick up Never Look Back. You will not be disappointed. 08.23.24
Wow. I wasn’t expecting such an interesting and dynamic story. Jonny Mendez, lead character, is a complex unpredictable surprising bad ass hero. His persona reflects his experiences with the Seals, CIA and early upbringing, Praise to his Mother for teaching him how to survive in the jungle we call life. Jonny faces many challenges and has to make some hard ass decisions. Strangers keep away from him, others stupid enough to challenge him soon find out why it is not a good idea. What I especially appreciate is the masterful way Gonzalez uses dialogue to tell his characters story and to move the story along. I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a great read.
The protagonist is similar to the Jack Reacher character - an ex-military loner with no fixed address just traveling around and attracting trouble. I have read and enjoyed the entire Reacher series of books and I enjoyed this novel as well. I found the writing to be, at times, more humorous than the Reacher novels, which I feel is a good thing. I hope that it is going to be a long series, and I am looking forward to reading the next one.
Jonny arrived at a small community which would do for a while it was near the sea, had a beach and looked peaceful, he soon found himself in a pub having a drink at the bar, he was been eyed up by four men, nothing usual, as a stranger in a town and 6’6 seemed to attract attention. Shortly after the men got up to left, he went outside bullets started flying, two dead men. Things started to get complicated.
This book could have gotten five stars. The language in this book was totally unnecessary. I can't stand reading books with such vulgar language and disrespect for God. I almost dumped it after two chapters but the plot was so interesting I just kept going. It won't happen again and I hope the Lord forgives me.
Loved this book!! I couldn't put it down! Loved the characters and the action!! Totally amazing !!
I totally loved the characters! There was action! Drama and romance!! I couldn't put it down!! I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates a good read!!
A new genre for Andrew Gonzalez and he wrote a very fast paced thriller. Jonny Mendez is not only an excellent fighter, but very good at seeing the whole picture a few steps ahead. Looking forward to the next in the series.
The story line was fine ,but entirely too much filler aparently to just add pages. I found myself skipping large sections of verbiage that added nothing to the story.
Full of surprises and suspense that will keep you guessing what Jonny will do next. Bullets are flying, bodies are dropping, whose responsibility is it. Ready for the next.
