But things start looking interesting when she meets village heartthrob Fred, and sparks fly in a forbidden romance that could sabotage her future.

Raised in a strict traditional home, 18-year-old Fred's life is already mapped out. Work on the farm, get married to a local girl, and uphold the family legacy. But Lucy, with her city-bred, free spirit, ignites an unfamiliar passion in him, challenging every rule he knows.

Between their family feuds and Lucy’s modern ways that stir village gossip, can their strong connection break through the old traditions, or will those traditions pull them apart?

I felt drawn to the story from the beginning. And I made me feel torn between tradition and love as well as compassion. I was rooting for love to conquer all. I would say the romance took center stage with the faith elements in the background. I enjoyed the contrast between the officers family that was faith based versus Fred’s family that was only religious. Romance and faith elements felt very authentic and relatable

I love the protagonist Fred and Lucy. Character development was great. As the reader I really felt I understood their values and personalities. I was most drawn to Lucy’s bold, enthusiastic, passionate, fiery personality. I admired her and wanted to be more like her, not caring about the mold others wanted to place her in. Fred reminded me of my husband and I’s dating days as Don was more reserved and proper and was not too sure of my fun loving side but yet he was drawn to it all the same.

The relationship felt very genuine and caused both of them to face conflicting feelings and face life’s challenges in different ways. And it was cool to see how they had a positive affect in each other. Lucy learned to draw back some and care about relationships while Fred grew more daring.

I found the plot easy to follow. I liked the pace of the story.

The conflict was only partially resolved for me but in a good way cause it left me wanting to read the next book. I liked how the protagonists had a pure relationship.

The Christian themes were seamlessly woven into the background, providing context but not really a major element. As such it didn’t really challenge me in any way. Just more of a context and contrast.

Dialogue flowed naturally and didn’t feel forced at all. And the writing style was easy to read.

Setting was very well described. I appreciate that while I could get caught up in storyline I was also learning about another part of the world and its culture. This made the story eye opening and educational. Also this explanation helped the reader understand the obstacles faced by the protagonists

Spiritual content was minimal and flowed naturally. To me it didn’t really add to emotional depth just provided context.

This story is incredibly unique, full of Ugandan culture, deep emotions, and the challenges of a hidden romance. It features classic tropes like forbidden love and feuding families, but with a fresh twist... cultural traditions and family duties add even more tension and drama.

Lucy returns home for a school break and quickly falls for Fred, a man from her family’s village. Their connection is instant and intense. But their future is complicated. Lucy plans to go back to school and isn’t ready for marriage. Fred, on the other hand, is expected to marry his late brother’s widow to honor tradition.

Their love feels real and heartbreaking. They try to steal precious moments together, even though life keeps pulling them apart.

This book truly pulled at my heartstrings. I can't wait to read the next one and see what’s next for Fred and Lucy!

I rated it 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.

"Anchored by traditions and responsibilities, how can I channel this magnetic attraction?"

Enter this YA, with touches of faith, romance in a village in Uganda. With Romeo and Juliet tones, this romance takes place in an unfamiliar environment for me. It was unique to dig deep into Ugandan village life and get to experience it through the pages of this book. While so much is different from my life and experiences, emotions and dreams common to all bridge the gap and that, coupled with a deep enjoyment of all I was learning, kept me super interested and devouring this book. I can’t wait to read more. I love how this book was inspired in reality.

I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

You know I don’t know what it says about my common sense but I actually thought their story was going to end in one book but silly me!

______________
OMG a good word for this story is probably “nostalgia” it reminds me of all the good books I shared with friends in secondary school that was actually the backbone of my reading career (LMFAOO like I’m a celeb or something) my reading journey!🤣

Their “love” if you can even call it that, is at odds. Doomed before the start by the standards that uphold the culture of their community.
Poor boy, Rich girl.
Educated girl, village boy with barely a primary education.
Their families are rivals
Her father just wants to protect her, his father wants to control him and make him a replacement for his dead older brother.
Everybody thinks he is delusional and won’t just go for a wife that literally kneels at his feet but will he rather kneel at lucy’s feet.
With polygamy being a big thing in the village too
It’s a lost cause I say! But I’m excited to see where there story takes them.

I don’t quite believe they love each other yet but I do believe they have the chemistry that can last a lifetime when developed properly.

I was definitely confused as to why they were living in a village with no running electricity and the city neighboring. But the love story was definitely like a Romeo and juliet, can't be with each other because our families hate each other, type thing. He was raised to uphold their villages traditions and customs but was wanting to go against it to be with her. If that's not love, idk what is. Fighting for what you want when everyone around, with only one adult cheerleader, is pushing for tradition and your unhappiness, the only thing left to do is rebel for love. And trust in that love to take you far. I hope there's a second book to see how far they get and what other tribulations they will have to endure to be together and happy.

Life Is about Change … but it’s hard to give up the old ways

This book captured my interest early. Why? It deals with hard choices but also shows how different life is when it comes to societal expectations and belief systems. The ‘old ways’ maintain the old traditions and beliefs and woe to those who are different. Seventeen year old Lucy is looked down upon because she’s a modern ‘city’ girl. She’s visiting her parents whose job has taken them to a quaint village. She’s on a 10 week school break. Will she be able to survive the gossipers and judgments thrown at her? Living a life of servitude isn’t for her. She’s too much of a free spirit.

How about Fred? He’s 18 and is from this village. He admire’s Lucy’s free spirit and yearns to step away from the life that’s been planned for him. According to tradition, love has nothing to do with it. You just obey, keep the traditions and don’t embarrass the family. He is supposed to wed his deceased brother’s wife, that’s his duty. And if he chooses to have more than one wife, that’s okay, his dad has three and just may go to a festival and take a fourth. But for Fred, that’s a problem. He may be destined to a life of tilling the soil but can destiny be changed?

Ten weeks might not seem long but it’s enough time for Lucy and Fred to start questioning things. One thing is for certain, life is all about change. But change takes courage. Can Lucy and Fred find a way to step out of their comfort zone? Or better yet, is their desire for each other strong enough to do it? We’ll need to wait till the next book to find out, but remember, faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains.

🤔OBSERVATIONS

✒︎ There is family contention… grudges…. expectations. Change will be hard.

✒︎ You’ll find gossipers and people stuck in their ways. I couldn’t help but think of a few scriptures about judging…. Judge not least ye be judged (Matt 7:1) and where Luke 6:41 talks about getting the log out of your own eye instead of looking at the speck in your brother’s eye.

✒︎ Reading this makes one aware of how much we take for granted. What would it be like to go live in another country where culture, lifestyle and expectations are nothing like you’ve known?

✒︎ This is a slow read, sometimes I thought too slow... but still eye opening.

I was given an advance copy of this book and freely leave my review.

An interesting story of a young woman, age 17, who is the eldest of 7 children, and a young man, age 18, who falls in love despite village and cultural differences and demands. Lucy is free-spirited and a member of the "Officer's" family in Uganda. Fred is bound by his family's traditions--farming, getting married, building a legacy. With his life chosen for him by both tradition and family, Fred lives in a village where there is no running water, phone, or electricity. Lucy lives in the city where she has access to the comforts, but she's home on holiday from boarding school, helping her mother and adapting to village life. Their families have been enemies for many years. There are forbidden boundaries--they are not permitted to socialize with each other's family, but when love blooms, can these boundaries be obeyed? Lucy is full of adventure and spontaneous, while Fred is her opposite. Can they adapt to each other's lifestyle characteristics, and what will happen to their relationship when Lucy has to return to boarding school? Even though their parents live a polygamous marriage (1 husband with several wives), what are Lucy's and Fred's thoughts on that kind of relationship?
I enjoyed reading about village life in Uganda, and the "first true love" between Lucy and Fred was sweet. At first I was confused by the "Officer" and why he traveled to the city to work, what he did, etc. My only disappointment is that the story left me hanging, and I will have to wait for the next book to hopefully read the outcome.
I received a complimentary ARC and have voluntarily given my honest opinion in this review.

Cultural Shock and Young Adult Story

When starting this book I did not know it took place in Uganda. I was thinking small town in America. I also didn't know that it was written for young adults. And while I do read young adult books so that wasn't the problem. The problem was I was in the headspace of an adult romance. So I found it very hard to continue this book in the beginning because culturally in the book the people getting married and prepped to be wed are what I would consider children (14-18 years old). The village is pressuring the main boy because he is overdue to be wed and he is considered a "bachelor" who is only 18 years old. The men are also able to have more than one wife... So thinking it was a regular adult book I was very scared we would dive into full romance including relations with children who would be considered adults and just the thought of where we were possibly going almost had me stop the book entirely.

Good thing I decided to push through and stop if we got to such content and thankfully we did not. The furthest they go is passionate kissing which is definitely fair for that age in my opinion. It also seems that it was a very chaste relationship because of the culture even though they get married at such an early age and have multiple wives. You would think it would be more overtly affectionate since there isn't a sneaking around aspect but that doesn't seem to be the case. I loved the insight into the culture of a Ugandan village and how things worked through the lens of curiosity with the main girl who also challenged those societal norms. I will the next books in this series.

“You’re engraved deep in my heart for life.” Though this was a line spoken between lovers, this right here sums up how I felt after reading Forbidden Bonds.

There is a definite Romeo and Juliet feel as both Fred and Lucy’s families have been feuding for quite a long time. Yet the young star-crossed lovers cannot fight their growing admiration for one another no matter the insurmountable obstacles that are constantly fighting to keep them apart. Poor Fred feels like he has no choice but to follow the traditions of his culture, but his heart is clearly speaking to him and leading him in another direction thanks to Lucy’s refreshing independence and overall zest for life, showing him that it is okay to dream bigger and to reach for the impossible.

This novel is a refreshing change of pace from what I’ve been recently reading, and it’s obvious this novel was written from a place of passion and heart. The flow is perfection, and I practically read this in one sitting. Like the unseen force that draws Fred and Lucy together, there is something magnetizing about this novel that drew me in.

Uganda is a place I’ve never had the opportunity to visit, but Rose brought it to life with her detailed and passionate descriptions of the landscape and scenery, making me wish this was a place I could see for myself while almost feeling like I had. I immediately started the next book in the series, Forbidden Dreams, after finishing this novel, which picks up right where this novel leaves off, and to say that I am hooked is an understatement. I am enjoying this series so much and am so pleased that Fred and Lucy’s story continues on.

I confess I wasn’t really looking forward to reading this book. I don’t typically read YA, but a reading challenge on participating in had this as its prompt for the month. I was thrilled to see that Rose Fresquez had a book that fit the bill because I do love her writing.

And this is why I really enjoy participating in reading challenges. Had it not been for this challenge? I would not have picked up this book. And I would’ve missed out! This is truly one of the most beautiful, lovely books I’ve ever read. I felt like I was in Uganda and I truly felt like I was part of the culture.

I love the story between Lucy and Fred. They’re so very different and yet so much alike. I loved watching their friendship develop. I loved seeing them introduce each other to new things and sharing in some very simple pleasures like stargazing and picnics.

There was a great deal on the story that brought smiles, but I have to add that there are also some hard and difficult moments. Nothing I consider overwhelming and certainly not portrayed graphically, but these two young people come from very different class levels in their world, and those obstacles were painful at times. Plus, they were just moments of the pain that comes with life.

I have to stress again, how much I enjoyed and was fascinated to learn and really feel immersed in Ugandan culture.

Lastly, this is not a book that tidy‘s up at the end. There’s a lot left hanging, but there is a book two. And I’m really looking forward to reading it soon.

Thank you to Booksirens and Rose Fresquez for granting my request to read this e-ARC and provide my honest opinions.

I think the author really wanted to make Fred's and Lucy's relationship feel forbidden enough for us, the readers, to root for them. Think this: the village poor boy who is eighteen and is supposed to get married, whose family believes in polygamy, and whose father has a longstanding feud with the city girl's father; the city kind of rich girl who is eighteen and does not plan on getting married any time soon, strongly believes in monogamy, cannot and will not be a traditional wife, and is aiming to be a career woman and is still in school.

So you see what I mean when I say the author really tried to make the love story forbidden; is forbidden even the right word? No, I got the right words, Out of Reach.

Fred and Lucy's love story is out of reach, and throughout the whole book, I was not rooting for them.

Overall, I did not enjoy the love interest in this story, the overbearing parents (fathers in particular); once I stopped rooting for our MCs, I lost interest in the story.

A beautiful, heartfelt love story that is about a young man, Villager, Fred and a young lady, Lucy, who's attending school beyond a normal villager's age because of her wealthy parents.

Even though both live in the same village they are light years apart in their culture and upbringing. There's no power in this village and that made Lucy very skeptical about her 10+ weeks of free time from school being spent on her parents' farm. Lucy grew to appreciate the natural beauty around her and feel head over heels, as did Fred, for each other.

Appreciate reading and learning about a village in Africa that has no power, but the love of God that Lucy's mom, Primrose, wrapped around her daily and learning how to adapt without such luxuries as electricity and running water. Came out of this readng wit a new found appreciation for my many blessings and love of this beautiful world God has given us. Also enjoyed seeing Fred step out in faith and realizing he, too, could have dreams and trying to make them real.

I was engaged in this story from the start. It’s a different take on a YA novel with the cultural aspect. It shows the struggles all young people face when looking to their future, though the cultural norms are different the emotions are the same. We’re all people created in God’s image, finding the person he’s called us to be.
I love the way the relationship bloomed despite the social and economic differences between Lucy and Fred. It wasn’t an easy road but somehow they seemed to find a way to navigate it. I believe the choice between the expectation of multiple wives vs. a monogamous marriage is pertinent not just to African culture but to America today as our culture sadly moves away from traditional marriage.
The Christian viewpoint blends seamlessly into the story. It was also realistic in that though they were Christian they still made unwise choices at times as all young people do.
This book seems more real than some YA novels I’ve read in the past. Though I would classify this book as YA I recommend it for readers of all ages.

The book was written mostly from a young man's point of view. Fred lives in Africa.

When Fred spots the officer's daughter, sparks fly. She is a university student on holiday. Lucy and Fred are very much attracted to each other. The only problem is that Lucy comes from a much different background. Her father does not want her to be tied down to a village boy. Lucy has better things in her future.

Her mother is more understanding, but in this culture, women are taught to trust their husband's role in raising children. Another thing that is tolerated is the permission of multiple wives for men especially if a woman is barren.

Fred and Lucy do not want anyone else besides them in a relationship. They get Lucy's younger brother to help them see each other. Lucy is a very independent young woman and this causes a lot of problems because women are taught to be submissive.

I am very much looking forward to book 2. It will be published around July 2025. I am learning more about the lives of others in a different culture.

Lucy is back in the village during the holidays. Here, she meets Fred, who is the son of her family’s “enemy”. Despite their family’s history and the many differences in their background and status, they learn to enjoy each other’s company.

Traditions and the expectations that falls upon Fred’s shoulders dictate that he should marry soon, and definitely not to “fancy” Lucy. She is highly educated and seeks a marriage that is different from those in the village, where polygamy is the norm.

This was definitely an interesting read as it exposes a different culture and way of thinking to me. As a reader, I get to immerse myself in a different setting and learn more from the comfort of home. The sweet romance between Lucy and Fred is also captivating and I can’t help but wish they get their happy ever after in future.

Forbidden Dreams is the second book in Rose Fresquez’ Forbidden Love young adult romance series, written as a tribute to her parents and her childhood spent in a small village in Uganda. More than just a love story between a city girl and a village farmer boy, it is the juxtaposition of traditional and modern values, city and village life, as well as the hidden beauty and quiet struggles of village life. The author’s vivid descriptions are so detailed that the reader feels as if they are immersed in the story. The challenges that Fred and Lucy face to overcome financial, societal and familial obstacles will pull at your heartstrings and I found myself cheering inwardly for each small victory. The books in this series are best enjoyed in order. While this book doesn’t end in a true cliffhanger, it does leave the reader waiting for more. I look forward to the next installment!

An interesting cultural look at 2 people who fall in love but have a multitude of issues that create a barrier between them. Set in a culture where polygamy is normal & traditional, there is also a degree of class difference between the 2 protagonists. The protagonists have to wade through their parents' expectations, their own expectations, cultural expectations & traditions, among other things, all the while trying to honor their parents, being truthful & dealing with feelings of love. It was an easy & enjoyable read and leaves enough of a cliff hanger to have me looking forward to the next book.

I enjoyed reading about Fred and Lucy who are from different backgrounds but seem to somehow bond. Lucy finds herself on vacation when she meets Fred. Lucy is from Buisobi in Uganda. Fred is all about family life and helping his family. Both Fred and Lucy are 17- and 18-years old teenagers and wise in age. Fred and Lucy’s families are enemies thus making things difficult for Fred and Lucy who are developing a bond. Awesome read book and we will be waiting until July 25, 2025 to read the next in this series about Fred and Lucy.

I am absolutely stunned by this book. The twists and turns of this romance book had me wanting more and more from the characters! I’m so glad Rose decided to implement different aspects of the Uganda Culture and show the reader what life in the village looked like for them. If I could rate this book out of 5, it would be a 6! I simply couldn’t put this book down and finished it in less than 48 hours. This book will forever be a favorite of mine!

This was a young adult story of Lucy and Fred who were seventeen and eighteen.  It was their first love and it came with angst, heartache, and plenty of dreams. I was fascinated learning about Lucy and her family as Lucy was on vacation from school and living in Buisobi Village in Uganda.  It was interesting to learn about Fred's culture and how men and women were viewed as to their roles in the village.  It was also interesting to see what they thought of Lucy and her family.  I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Rose is a woman after my own heart. I am from Africa so the book took me back to my roots. I loved the traditions of the people in the village and the chemistry between Lucy and Fred. She also addressed some of the struggle experienced in the village like a lack of education and early marriages. The ending was a bit abrupt for me and I wish I could see those characters again. So Rose… are we getting a book 2???

This story is set in Uganda, and the way the author wrote it made it feel so real. Lucy and Fred are teenagers, whose families are feuding and should not be seeing each other. Lucy’s mom was somewhat understanding but her father was not. They would have to meet at night or out in the fields where he was working. It’s a tender story of first love, where his family wants him to marry young, her family wants her to get an education, the difference between the class level. I enjoyed reading this story and learning about another country, it is a sweet and tender story.

This story is so beautiful. Reading this give so much information about Uganda's culture. I have never been there but reading this book felt like I am living there. And as an Indian, personally I felt so much common between the cultures and traditions. And, the romance between the characters felt so pure, nostalgic and tender. I personally love young adult books but it felt so refreshing to read such romance with such an old school romance and just pure feelings.

I enjoyed how the author used imagery, I could see the characters and the stories so well with the beautiful words that were used. I honesty learned a lot of information though out the book, it was a really interesting read!! It did end in a cliffhanger and I am really interested to see where the story goes.

This is a well written book. I liked the main characters. The writing is beautiful. The love story is sweet, but also sad that the families were opposed to their relationship. It was good to learn about some of the people and culture of Uganda. The ending left me with wanting to read more about this couple's future.

A very classic love story but set as an opposites attract in a very unusual setting. Free and easy city girl meets very traditional town boy. A very easy read that has you in and also scratching your head about some issues. Great for the classic traditional romance reader
