Climb aboard the arc! The world's only moving city walks across a wasteland beset by ecological collapse, leaving crater sized footprints in its wake. Arc citizens work and live on Arc Alpha, a hyper-commercial, hyper-innovative, and hyper-isolated hub whose sole contact with the outside world lies in the hands of vetted security officers that scour the waste for fashionable treasures using remote piloted aircraft. From a windswept wasteland, a feral traveler has tracked the arc with a debt to settle. Seeking a "metal beast," this man heeds the instructions of his only companion, a one-antlered deer skull. The stranger journeys to the arc, making unlikely allies and vicious foes, hounded by arc security at every step. This outsider and their new friends become embroiled in a plot that will forever alter the arc's destiny.
An entertaining drama that adheres to Isaac Asimov's famous quote: "the core of science fiction -- its essence -- has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all." The dystopian science fiction is fun, but the heart of the story deals with the human condition - the good, bad, and ugly - which Cannon did very well.
I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked from the first page by this captivating and unique story. There were so many twists and turns that I never knew what to expect next, and the ending tied it all together beautifully.
