Shattered Veil: A Forbidden Relationship Contemporary Romantic Suspense Novel

Rate this book
Chilling sights and committed sins haunt his dreams, but there is only more to come.

James Turner is not one to shove his emotions in a bottle, but his current circumstances have rendered bottling a necessity. The harrowing memory that looms in his mind—the crime committed months prior with his chosen family in a desperate act of survival—is rarely, if ever, spoken of. After all, it seems far easier for everyone to simply go on with their everyday lives in an attempt to drown out the noise that no doubt lingers above them.

True solace evades him, though, and who weighs on his shoulders nearly as heavily is the one he shouldn’t want. A close friend’s little sister. The one that he knows should be forbidden. Cassie Cohen.

The woman who is almost a decade his junior and secretly working as an exotic dancer has burrowed her way under his skin. Neatly placed within his friend group and having experienced the same living nightmare, she is more than familiar with all that could chill one to the bone. Bonded in trauma, the pair share a connection that is impossible to ignore.

As life would have it, though, their adversity is yet to end. The small town that they reside in is covertly being shaken to its core. Rumor has it that women—some of them dancers—are going missing.

James and Cassie’s past is intertwined…and so is their future.

3.5 stars for me.

James Turner and Cassie Cohen story.Nothing is easy, she's Liam little sister who likes to stealing his drink in a bar.One night in a strip club change everything for them, add the girls who dissapear from the club, and danger always seems to find James and his friends.

Is Cassie safe?

The third book in the series,it was a quick read despite the length, the suspense really keep me reading on just to know will they ever be safe.Romance between Jay and Cassie was sweet, the chemistry good and it have this aww moments.I liked them together despite my previous review on second book when I stated that they all are connected in some way or another and it was putting me off.Moving on to book four, and I hope that the bad guys will get what they deserve.

Thank you Booksirens and author for copy,my review is honest and my own.

Me in the first 30% : 😂😆😆🥹 i’m loving the characters and the banter and Jay’s silent suffering trying to deny his feelings for Cassie
30-90% : *insert ominous dreadful music* 😨😰😶‍🌫️😖😟🫨😟😠😠😠😠
After 90% : 🤗😂 I love the found family

Eliza Modiste writes romance twined with mystery and she writes it damn well! I don’t remember when’s the last time I finished an ARC this quickly lol (my ibooks timer can attest to that) but I couldn’t put it down.
I loved all the banter, especially Jay and Brook’s 😂 them calling each other “boo” was hilarious and Brooks was such a great friend I honestly hope Eliza has something sweet saved up for him.
And as for Cassie, I totally love the way that she’s written. She’s strong and confident, she’s wounded and has build walls around herself but she’s able to lower them and let the people that matter in 🥹 she doesn’t shy away from her feelings and I love that for her

Thank you to Love Notes PR, and the author, for providing me with all three books in the series for review and promotion.

I think this was my favourite of the series, mainly because I could really get on board with the nerdy numbers-loving James as an accountant myself!! I said in my review for book two, but after becoming more invested int he characters and their relationships, exploring another in detail was just what I needed. Again it got quite dark, and we had some really high-stakes drama, but the romance bounced off that being so incredibly wholesome. Mixing the two together, and doing it well, was very impressive to read.

I'm really hoping we have more books from Eliza, in this universe or a new one, because something about her books has been so addictive to read.

ARC REVIEW
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - I absolutely adored this book!

I loved all the banter! And the characters - OMG - the characters and their relationships. I loved them so much. James is just such a strong sensitive man, and I love Cassie. She is strong, independent, and has tall, strong walls put up, but she lowers them for James. And I love how he acknowledges that and how much of a gift that is. I love the relationship between James and Brooks. How he has someone who's doesn't know anything that he can go to and just be normal even if it's just an act.

This book is by far my favorite book in the series. It is the third in an inter-connected series and you just have to read the first two. They get you invested in the characters and the overall story plot. You just get to grow closer to these characters and really know what's happening.

I absolutely love the found family in this series. You can really tell how close of a relationship all the characters have, even Luke and Cassie. You can really see they are all just one family. And I love that!!!

tropes:
• Found family
• Small town
• Age gap
• Trauma bonded
• Spice & banter
• Romance Suspense

'I was still damaged. I mean…we all were.
But she made it easier—and God, I loved her for that' — James Turner

💜

Shattered Veil is the 3rd book in the interconnected standalone 'Veiled' series.

This book is set on one of my favorites since book 1,James Turner. James is that over protective tough, cinnamon roll sweetheart of a man and he won my heart when I first met him. So knowing book 3 was naturally gonna be his, I was so excited to see my boy get a well deserved happily ever after! & his relationship with Cassie delivered! It was passionate asf & consuming. The way they stood by each other and were concerned for their well beings was wholesome. Our two tough cookies made the perfect pair #jassie

I enjoyed the tropes in this one as it was executed well! The suspense element was added into the plot nicely and was interesting. I love this little found family and it felt good revisiting them in this book. These characters really make it feel like I know them in person or from a movie. I kinda wanna see this book series get adapted into a movie tbh.
We also saw Colt again and ngl I actually like him a lot lol. I also enjoyed new side character, Shawn.

There was some deep quotes about being broken and trauma which hit!
I'm eager to see what Eliza plans next and will definitely read anything she writes! A talented author and a super sweet person. Wishing you all of the success. Eliza Modiste is the kind of author that will go BIG someday, don't forget us when that happens,E 😜 xo

p.s. how did I not realize this book was 600 pages+ ig time flies when you are having fun 😂

☆ Thank you,Eliza for the e-arc & pr box that's on it's way! ☆

“Shattered Veil” is a combination of a spicy romance that also has a suspense thriller vibe to it. Author Eliza Modiste incorporates such quick, witty banter between the two characters, James and Cassie. It’s not the kind of cheesy banter that overshadows or diminishes the intent of the plot but makes it unique and often a distraction to what is about to hit at any moment.

James is dealing with many challenges based on what has occurred recently. He is riddled with trauma, which worsens when women begin to go missing in his small town. But then there’s his friend’s younger sister, Cassie, who struggles as well, but he’s always been interested in her despite the age difference and her being off-limits. The two of them share a strong connection.

I loved Cassie’s character. It was such a perfect match for James—so full of sass and outspoken. The spice scenes are written well but don’t dominate the entirety of the plot; that is, it’s not all smut. “Shattered Veil” is a plot-heavy romantic suspense story and a fine one at that.

Thank you to Author Eliza Modiste for the gifted, advanced reader copy of “Shattered Veil.” I am leaving this review voluntarily.

ARC REVIEW:

this is the first book I've read by Eliza and I must say, I am definitely going to be finishing up this series! if you haven't already, I definitely recommend picking up the first in the series (unless you want to start with the third like I did). it's so fun reading a book based somewhere I'm familiar with especially when I lIve in the same state and know many of the counties mentioned in the book!📖 I really loved the family dynamic with the crew, especially when Liam is James's best friend, Cassie is Liam's little sister, and Luke is James' brother. this is an inter-connected series so there are times when things are mentioned that are from the other two books but you don't have to read all of them to enjoy this book.

(Spoilers:)
there were some moments where I was o nthe she of my seat, wondering what would happen next. I was afraid for Colton and his injury and whether or not he'd live to tell the tale of saving someone.

it was tough reading about how Zoey had a stalker and how much everything with him was interconnected with the cop.

(more to this review on my bookstagram)

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I wasn’t going to read the first 2 book of this series first but I’m so glad that I did. Not only because they’re all linked together but also, I wouldn’t have gotten to know the other wonderful characters if I hadn’t. And this is by far my favourite of the series!

Cassie is my favourite of these characters, by far. She’s so independent and strong, but so vulnerable and hurt and real at the same time. I love how she’s able to just be herself and how she’s able to build friendships despite everything she’s been through.

The found family trope is one of my favourites, and Eliza Modiste does it so, so dang well, along with the perfect medley of romance, suspense and comedy. The commentary between the characters was my favourite part of these books.

Thank you for this ARC!

Received this book as an ARC and I’m so glad that I did. As the third book in this series Eliza does not disappoint. She continues the book with James and Cassie stories and interconnects what has happen in books one and two. I would say make sure you read books one and two prior to getting into this one. A group of friends/ siblings find a new family of their own in the town in which they reside in. More trouble lurking in the darkness.

📚 James likes to keep things simple, since he’s recently divorced and trying to get his life back on track. Cassie is fun, wild, and free, just trying to make ends meet and have fun while doing it. These two tend to grind each other's gears when they are together with their chosen family, Zoe and Claire, and their real family, Luke and Liam. But when women start missing in the Salem area, James realizes he has to protect Cassie at all costs.

While you do not have to read the other two books, I would strongly encourage it. I have been obsessed with this series ever since I signed up for the ARC through Love Notes PR in exchange for my honest review. READ THIS SERIES! No, but really, if you like romance with some spice, and thrillers, THIS IS IT! Okay, enough about how much I love this series and this book, and on to the good stuff. Eliza does such a great job at really developing the characters as if they are your own friends, and you’re living in Salem with them. James hasn’t really been my favorite throughout the series, but his obsession (and restraint) with Cassie made me love him even more. Cassie is Liam’s sister, and James is Luke’s brother, so their “chosen” family includes some real family, too. There is a new character introduced, Shawn, and he may be my new favorite. At first, I wasn’t sure where the story line was going with the missing girls, and how it might connect to the other books, but once I hit it… I wanted to stay up ALL night to see what would happen. I HIGHLY recommend this book, and the rest of the series. Let me know your thoughts below if you’re already read it or added it to your TBR!

Soft Hands, Sharp Edges, and a Love Built from Ruins—James Turner has been holding a storm inside his chest for months, and this book lets you feel every crack in the bottle he’s been shoving his emotions into. He’s not the broody-silent type by nature, but guilt, fear, and the echoes of a crime committed in the name of survival have turned him into someone who barely recognizes himself. And the one person who keeps slipping past his defenses? Cassie Cohen. His best friend’s little sister. Almost a decade younger. Exotic dancer. Trauma twin.
“Forbidden” doesn’t even begin to cover it.
What I loved is that this book doesn’t treat their trauma bond as a shortcut to intimacy—it treats it as a foundation that needs tending, honesty, and space to grow into something healthier. They are messy, jagged people trying to build something soft together, and it’s devastating in the best way.
This story delivers:
✨ Found family dynamics that feel like lifelines
✨ Small-town isolation with big-city shadows
✨ Age gap tension handled with care
✨ Chemistry that simmers instead of shouts
✨ Banter as a coping mechanism
✨ Fear that feels earned, not manufactured
When women in their town—especially dancers—start going missing, the stakes spike. The danger isn’t abstract; it’s rooted in their daily lives, the places Cassie works, the alleys James walks her to her car in. The suspense feels like a second heartbeat in the background, getting louder and faster with each chapter.
TW content is handled thoughtfully: kidnapping, stalking, torture methods, childhood abuse, suicidal ideation. The author doesn’t glamorize the trauma, doesn’t linger in it for shock value—but doesn’t look away either. It’s a story that forces you to sit with discomfort, not because it wants to hurt you, but because it’s trying to show what survival really looks like.
James and Cassie’s connection is a slow erosion of boundaries and self-protection. They don’t fall into each other—they inch, with shaking hands and broken memories, and it feels so much more intimate than any instant-love would have. Their spice isn’t about ownership—it’s about permission. About saying, “I see you, even here,” without either of them having to hide the shadows.
This book is for readers who crave:
🖤 emotional intimacy over performative angst
🏚️ healing that isn’t linear or pretty
💋 romance built in the aftermath of disaster
🩹 tenderness that feels like rebellion
🔪 thriller pacing that keeps you alert
By the time I finished, it felt like I had watched two people learn how to breathe again. Not perfectly. Not neatly. But honestly.
If you love small-town stories with teeth, romances that feel like rebuilding a home from ashes, and characters who refuse to let the worst parts of their lives be the end of their story—read this.

The beginning of the book was hilarious. I was loving all the banter and watching Jay come to terms with his feelings for a younger woman, who just happens to be the sister of someone he considers a friend.

I love how confident and bold Cassie is. That girl has her walls up, but she knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to let it be known. She doesn’t let her past keep her from her future and I LOVED it. The entirety of this found family is adorable and I love that I get to feel like I’m a part of it. The fact that they all refer to each other as their family and not friends just makes my heart feel so full. I love that they are all willing to do ANYTHING without question to be there for each other.

I really hope Brooks and Colt get to join in and become a staple part of their family. Brooks is hilarious and I love his banter with Jay. If you recall I was VERY partial to Colt in the first book so he didn’t have to grovel much to get my forgiveness, but I really feel like he’s redeemed himself and earned a spot in the family.

The suspense was suspens-ing, the spice was spicing, and the romance WAS ROMANCING. Eliza does it once again.

Title: Shattered Veil

Author: Eliza Modiste

Rating: ★★★★.5

James Turner is struggling to cope with the harrowing memory of a crime he and his chosen family committed months ago in a desperate act of survival. To manage, everyone tries to continue with their lives, pushing the traumatic event aside.

However, James finds it impossible to find true solace, particularly because of his feelings for Cassie Cohen, a close friend's little sister. Nearly a decade younger and secretly working as an exotic dancer, Cassie has deeply affected him. Both having experienced the same trauma, James and Cassie share an unshakable bond that complicates his emotions even further.

As life would have it, though, their adversity is yet to end. The small town that they reside in is covertly being shaken to its core. Rumour has it that women—some of them dancers—are going missing.

James and Cassie’s past is intertwined…and so is their future. Eliza Modiste delivers a thrilling and emotionally charged narrative in Shattered Veil. The novel is packed with plot twists that keep readers on the edge of their seats, fully engaged from start to finish.

James and Cassie’s relationship is compelling and authentic, with their growth beautifully portrayed through their shared trauma and forbidden attraction. The chemistry between them is palpable, making their connection one of the highlights of the book.

Modiste’s ability to blend suspense, romance, and character development is impressive, creating a story that is both gripping and heartwarming. The small-town setting, rife with secrets and danger, adds an extra layer of intrigue that keeps the reader guessing until the very end.

Absolutely love James and Cassie, and I was deeply invested in their journey. Shattered Veil is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a suspenseful romance with complex characters and a plot full of surprises. Highly recommended!

Thank you to The author Eliza Modiste & Netgalley for an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review.

Review:
A small town thriller with a solid cast of characters, each with vibrant personalities, and a romance that doesn't impede any of the flow! This was a winner and I hadn't even read the first two in the series, thus one recaps enough that I didn't feel lost.

We have a group of people who are traum@ bonded by aprevious murd3r. James, the slightly nerdy and handsome "everyman", has has nightmares about that night and has remained more of home body. Despite this, he has growing feelings towards the little sister in his group of friends. Cassie is vibrant and strong but has a painful past and her walls are up. As they work through their feelings, there are a string of missing girls at her job occurring that puts her, James and their group on high alert... is it connected to the murd3r they covered up previously?

I absolutely love all these characters and how singularly unique they are written. Sharp, witty dialog, it flows like melted butter off the page. James' work friend, Brooks, is hilarious with him. The dynamics of everyone is pitch perfect! I could see them in the room as they talked through tense scenes or comical exchanges.

The thriller aspect was also very well balanced and it and the growing romance kept me clinging to every next page. I loved that James was an everyday man working a computer job lol...but was also a very capable man with a heart of gold. So sweet, especially when he was all shy and wrestling with his feelings. I think a bit more slow burn woulda made it even more delicious!

But I love this couple, the entire cast and how the suspense amped up in the third act...was wringing my fingers together! Definitely wanna read book 4 when it's out

Firstly, I would recommend reading this as a series! Even though I was gifted the first two to be prepped when this ARC came thru, I just didn't have the time to read them and I felt like I missed a few things here and there. Especially with the characters building their family. And the backstory of mystery that I assume went thru books one and two.
This story followed James and Cassie. They met in the previous books and Cassie is the little sister of Liam. So in James' eyes that makes her off limits anyhow. They bonded over the past trauma with a stalker of Zoey's.
James tries his hardest to keep Cassie at arm's length. He comes off as grumpy in that state and like he hates Cassie. But in honesty, he's out of a divorce, trying to keep things simple calm and on track and Cassie is none of those things.
Cassie is the fun, free and wild girl. She's trying to make ends meet and does it while dancing. A secret job that nobody actually knows about until James literally stumbles upon it.
Even with this being book three, Eliza does a good job weaving things together and working in the plot of the previous two books. James' restraint with Cassie and his feelings made me love him. Cassie without knowing was the one who was bringing him out of his boring rut of life. Things do tie together. How the women start going missing. Zoey's stalker. The new character Shawn. Then James finally breaking and realizing that he needs to protect Cassie at all costs.
I will definitely make time to read the first two books between now and the end of the year. This way I can get the full effect of the found family and appreciate it that much more.
I was still sucked in and kept on the edge of my seat. Stayed up overnight wondering what was going to happen next. Thank you to Eliza and Love Notes PR for trusting me with an early copy of this story and for the gifts of books one and two.

Why choose between romance and suspense when you can have both? With the “Veiled” series, Eliza Modiste created a world where one cannot go without the other, which makes every single one of her stories so epic.

Even though there is something deeply romantic within the author’s writing – in the best sense of the term, that is – Shattered Veil definitely isn’t a ‘classic’ small town romance novel. Indeed, according to Eliza Modiste’s vision, there can be no love story without a considerable amount of angsty twists and turns.

Yes, the story takes place in a small town (called Salem, FYI); and yes, there definitely is love in the air. But that is definitely *not* all… From the very first pages, you’ll get carried by the extremely singular vibe of the story. At first, there’s a haunting tone to the narrator’s inner monologue, true to the Veiled Series’s DNA, which suspenseful themes always run through each storyline, in the form of past traumas, secrets, and ever-present danger lying in the shadows. And what’s actually even more thrilling (as if it were even possible), is that besides the intrinsic darkness, Shattered Veil also delivers a lot of nuances throughout its narrative; with an undoubtedly unique dose of banter, delightfully sensual relationship developments, and lots of extremely emotional and relatable perspectives, which definitely make it a strikingly realistic and immersive novel.

Even more than a romantic suspense piece (which is terrific already, let’s be honest), it’s a story about friendship, bonding, starting anew, the ability to find beauty and love even in the middle of chaos,... A true page-turner, in its purest form.

Also, for the very first time in the series, a male perspective is at the forefront, which offers once again, a whole new approach in terms of storytelling. Every character is so vibrant and interesting, it’s a real blast to get to experience the story through the eyes of each of them, book after book. True to that fact, Shattered Veil’s main character James is a very unique and nuanced protagonist who will make you feel all the emotions – literally. Opposite to common stereotypes, his authentic and vulnerable way of being will make you want no less than wearing one of those T-Shirts saying “I won’t date anyone, unless he’s a man written by Eliza Modiste” (future merch idea, maybe? Who knows…). The author fully takes over the romance usual codes and gives her hero a love story promoting both positive masculinity and female independence (thanks to an equally impactful and witty female lead) without even feeling the need to make a big deal out of it; as if it simply were how it was supposed to be. In other terms, Shattered Veil – just like the rest of the “Veiled” series– literally is what you’ve been looking for as a romance reader; whether you knew it or not.

Ultimately, Shattered Veil probably is the most intense opus of the series so far. Mysterious disappearances, twisted schemes getting unveiled, personal and shared traumas, unexpected comebacks,… a heavy and hectic combination that will definitely not let readers down. Whether you’ve read the two other books or not, you’ll get to fully enjoy all the density of the exceptionally well structured plot that you’re about to experience. 5 stars ⭐ and more ❤️‍🔥✨

Eliza has done it again. Shattered Veil is the third book in the series, and with each book I fall more and more in love with Eliza’s writing and ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats, while also laughing out loud, and falling in love with the characters.

While this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone because there are brief and succinct recaps of the events that unfolded in the other books. However, I highly recommend reading them all, and in order, because it honestly makes Shattered Veil that much more thrilling and enjoyable.

James and Cassie might be my favorite couple yet (although it’s hard to choose). James is a tortured soul, shattered from the trauma he and his friends have endured. Cassie puts on a tough face, but she has a soft spot for James, and the two of them together just make sense. There’s some steamy scenes in which their chemistry is evident, and I won’t lie - I blushed quite a few times while reading them.

Behind the romance, there’s obviously a dark and thrilling plot taking place. Once crap hit the face, I could not tear my eyes away from the pages. It seems each book gets more and more sinister, and I am absolutely here for it. And in the midst of all of it, there is still plenty of laugh out loud moments - particularly from one character who makes an unexpected return.

Overall, Shattered Veil did not disappoint. Darkness, humor, and romance all packed into one book - I am one happy romantic suspense reader!

Thank you to Reedsy and Eliza for this ARC, and the chance to share my honest review!

When the tropes in the book are best friends, sister, age gap with romantic suspense…Sign me up! This was my favorite book in the Veiled series.

I loved James. James is a hard worker who loves his friends and would do anything for them. When his coworkers invite him out for a drink he doesn’t expect to run into his best friend's little sister (who he is attracted to).

Cassie. I loved her so much! She is feisty and sassy but has high walls built around her heart. When she runs into James at her work she ends the night with her heart a little bruised from the man she calls friend who is off limits. But when coworkers start disappearing she finds herself staying with James.

This book was mostly from James pov and honestly I wasn’t mad. I loved being inside James brain and his thought process. The way he held back with Cassie but when he couldn’t anymore he was all in and told her this much. I really loved Cassie and James and their communication. While they hid their relationship for the time being they were always on the same page on what they ultimately wanted and I was here for that. The suspense of this book was good! I didn’t expect who it was and I love how it was Cassie who went into protective mode and went with her gut feeling (I loved that about this book). These two were perfect for each other and I really could have kept reading about them.

I can’t forget to add Brooks to this review. Brooks is James' coworker/friend. I absolutely loved his friendship and he had me cracking up when his part popped up in the book! We all need a friend like Brooks. Really we all need a friend group like the one that was showcased in this book.

Thank you to LoveNotes PR and Eliza Modiste for the arc of this book.

Arc Book Review – Shattered Veil (The Veiled Series Book 3) by Eliza Modiste is available on Amazon.

This was the first book I read by Eliza and I could not put this down. She has an incredible skill for writing a perfect concoction of suspense, mystery, contemporary romance with the perfect amount of spice. I was immediately sucked into this book by the witty banter and chemistry between the MMC (James) and FMC (Cassie). James is your small town, handsome nerdy type but haunted by the trauma of a past crime. Cassie is a confident woman with a strong backbone but harboring her own secret as an exotic dancer. She is the also the forbidden fruit to James because she is the little sister to a close friend.

I truly loved reading the evolution of Cassie and James relationship and the beautiful unfolding of their trauma bonds. Their chemistry and banter had me reading well into the late night hours. This book is full of sharp dialogue, thoroughly developed characters and the perfect amount of suspense to keep you flipping those pages. I can’t wait to go back and read books one and two, in addition to reading several more books from this author because she’s incredibly gifted at story-telling.

First a big Thank You to the author Eliza Modiste for the opportunity to read your series!!

I like the recap in the beginning about who everyone is to James and how they fit into his story. I’m glad I read these books in order, it really does give you the full story with all the details!

This was such a great story about two people coming together and realizing their feelings for each other were mutual.

James - such a cinnamon roll MMC and despite having hang-ups and concerns with how Liam (Cassie’s brother) would react, he thought he was going to be such a bad friend. Even with all the crazy that happens, I loved how his and Cassie’s relationship just blossomed naturally and just so smooth that there was no big over-reaction when they finally admitted to being with each other.

Cassie - such a strong and smart FMC but had moments where she was so vulnerable that made me love her even more. She allowed herself to lower her walls for only the few people she trusts and loves! 🧱To have someone so guarded willingly let their walls down for another, That is the greatest honor!

Overall, I love the Scooby-doo gang vibes that this group gets themselves into. The banter & spice are great in these books! Such a great overall storyline of found family and friends to lovers, and I can’t wait to dive into Colton & Skylar’s story!! Let’s see if Colton can redeem himself 👀, not quite sure how I feel about him yet 🤔

Shattered Veil was probably my favorite book in The Veiled Series. In Shattered Veil, we follow along from James' POV. James and the rest of the crew have already been through so much. The found family throughout the series is probably my favorite thing about the books. James is older than Cassie, Liam's little sister, so he feels that she is completely off limits. Shawn, a co-worker of James, begs him to go out with him and the new guy from sales. James is not a fan of strip clubs and tries to refuse to go, but eventually he goes anyway. When he arrives at Gas Lamp, he is surprised when he realizes he knows one of the dancers, Cassie. She swears James to secrecy because no one in their friend group knows what she actually does for work.
Colton, Claire's Ex, makes a surprise cameo in book three. I really didn't like Colton, but he had some redeeming qualities in James & Cassie's story. He comes to town because he dancers from Gas Lamp are starting to disappear. Colton knows why. The crew is dealing with something from their recent past. They ask Colton to basically break into an apartment at their complex with little to no know questions asked. Because of everything going on, James and Cassie get closer and closer. They care deeply for each other. Cassie eventually moves in with James to keep safe. No one knows that there is more going on with them. Well, a few might be aware.
As the story progressed, I couldn't believe all the connections. Definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. I was truly shocked when everything came together. I did wish for a little more in certain areas of the story. However, I would still recommend this series.

Honest ARC Review

I enjoyed this book, I wish I'd read the first 2 first though! But can be read without having read the first two in my opinion.

I kept getting Liam and Luke mixed up, I found it hard to keep track of which one's which but I enjoyed the plot, I liked that there was a lot going on.

The writing is very eloquent, (lots of big words) xD that I had to google and double check I knew the meaning of and this made it more difficult to read, (I'm more of an easy reader, gimme it plain, don't be fancy). Yet there was an abundant usage of "off of" which isn't proper English as far as I'm aware (also googled that). Also the fact that from the characters POV they kept saying 'for I have not', 'for I was x', this irked me because no one speaks like that, I would understand if it were a period piece but it's not. Some parts were overly descriptive like why are we talking about his glasses in such great detail but maybe that's just me, I wanted to get on with the story and it was taking up time.

All in all I'm intrigued as to where this will end as I believe there'd a Book 4 coming and I did enjoy the story line a lot, the plot was plotting! And I'm intrigued about Book 1 + 2 and will hopefully get round to reading them soon.

Thank you so much for letting me ARC and I'm so so sorry I'm very late, life's been getting in the way

James and Cassie, the two most opposite people to ever fall in love. Cassie is outgoing and giddy while James is closed off and keeps to himself. But when they are brought together through mutual friends and family over some dark times, they feel a pull to each other but don't understand it and try to ignore it.
James hangs with his friends a couple times a week but never too much. He has his routines and he likes to stick to them. His wife left him and he just feels empty. His buddy from works decides that he needs to get out and let loose but that leads to him feeling his feelings as he sees Cassie at her place of employment and sets off his jealousy radar that he never knew he had.
Cassie does not disclose her place of employment to her brother or friend group because she feels that she will be judged for it. But now that James knows, it is their little secret. But they also find their selves exploring these feelings they try to ignore after seeing each other.
Someone from the dark past reappears and is somehow intertwined with everyone including Cassi's work. It takes them down a dark road and they all have to fight to get through it and stay strong for one another.

Eliza, my darling girl, you have done it again! SO proud of you for releasing your third book, and i am your biggest fan always! 🩷 Keep growing, cannot wait to see more!

I love how this book interconnected with the previous books in the series with Cassie being Liam's sister and James being Luke's brother, and the whole brothers best friend thing it has going on! It is so cute and exciting to see the found family made in the books and seeing all my fav characters revitalized in this new, and ever thrilling, novel of yours!
There is something that Eliza's books bring to the table where there is more than just the romance going on and you can feel literally every emotion known to man-kind that just enthrals me in all of her stories. There's always more to her books and it brings a level of sophistication to her work.

Strongly recommend reading this book if you are interested in a beautiful love story that will still make you feel like you are in a slingshot! And I BEG of you to read the other two books on her log as well, especially recommend reading them before this one so you can have the same nostalgia I felt!

🩷as always, love olivia reads

Firstly I'd like to thank Eliza Modiste and Pr Love Notes for allowing me the opportunity to early read and review Shattered Veil.

I absolutely LOVED this book!
It is the 3rd installment in The Veiled series and compliments the first 2 novels perfectly. If I'm completely honest it is actually my favorite so far.

The story is told from dual points of view by James and Cassie who we met in the previous books. I was so happy to discover the book follows these characters as Eliza had already made me fall in love with James strong and passionate personality, and Cassie a sharp and witty independent young woman.

All of our favourite characters return to the page in the small town that we've grown to love.

It has romance, humour, mystery, intrigue, spicy open door scenes, twists and turns and so much more.

This book is an absolute roller coaster ride of raw emotions, I loved every moment and I am recommending this series to everyone.

The 4th book is currently a work in progress piece and i am eagerly awaiting its release in the future.

Available August 1st.

I have to say this left quite an impression. The book crafts an intriguing world where mystery and subtle suspense weave together beautifully without ever feeling forced. Modiste’s writing is both evocative and accessible, inviting you into a narrative that balances imaginative world-building with deeply personal stakes.

What I particularly enjoyed was how the characters are portrayed—not as archetypes, but as real people with complicated emotions and motivations. Their journeys feel genuine, and you can’t help but root for them as they navigate challenges that are as internal as they are external.

This is a book that respects its readers’ intelligence, offering layers of meaning to unpack while keeping the story delightfully unpredictable. If you’re in the mood for a novel that blends mystery, introspection, and a touch of magic, this one is definitely worth your time.

Many thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and the author for providing me with an ARC and allowing me to provide my honest review

This is the third book in the series and best read as part of the series as there are references and snippets from the other books that may not make sense. This one focus's on Jays pov and his relationship with Liams sister Cassie.

I love that this is not your typical romance story. Yes you have the 2 main interests but the main plot centres around women going missing in the local area and Jay's realisation that Cassie could be next. There is the sense of danger and suspense and then there is the humour and joy and despite everyone the love everyone has for each other.

I found it hard to put this down as I really wanted to know what happened and the revaltions were just great. I loved the initial denial and then intense feelings and banter between Jay and Cassie and how their lives intertwine with each other.

Thank you Love Notes PR and Eliza for giving me the chance to read and review this great book. A must read series.

The crimes keep on coming and the gang keeps on fighting!

@elizamodiste is great at the suspense and knows how to keep a reader on their toes waiting for the other shoe to drop. And really this entire time reading, I was waiting for that moment. Especially with Colton being involved…

I admit, it was a tad bit hard to get into the first few chapters. But once the story got rolling and we got the moments between Cassie and James I was hooked. Their banter was gold and the chemistry between them was sparkling. I loved every scene with them, but especially that first glow in the dark one iykyk

I loved that we got to hang out with a new character a lot more, Brooks. I enjoyed his friendship with James and it was refreshing to see him have a companion who knows absolutely nothing about the situation that he can go to. Brooks is a nice addition to this little family group with his funny and sensitive side. So I’m happy he was here!

This one was probably a favorite of mine in this series and I loved watching all the connections grow stronger and deeper with this book. And the story was so enthralling once the romance started to heat up and with it the tension and drama. I can’t wait to see what @elizamodiste has for us next!

If you like spicy romance, bad guys turn good, creepy messages, suspense, fighting and gore, found family and anxiety then you should pick up this book!

*anxiety because that’s very much what this book could give you because it’s so good at keeping you on the edge of your seat!*

Just when I think @elizamodistewrites can't outdo herself... She does 🤯 EVERY book in this series just gets better and better!

Shattered Veil is the story of everyone's favourite brother - James 👀 and if you thought he managed to escape most of the drama in the last couple books - let me tell you, he does not get missed from the action this time!

Falling in love with your friends little sister and navigating a fate of kidnap, missing women, questionable policemen... This book gave me vibes of if "Friends" met "Scooby Doo" and I'm not mad about it 🤣🤌🏻

One big dysfunctional found family, figuring out crime, causing chaos and frankly just trying to stay alive... Whilst falling in love 🥲❤️‍🔥

SO lucky to say I'm now onto the fourth book, an ARC which I am BINGING before release day on 31st December! Get the first three on your TBR and read so you're ready for the next installment of this more-ish series 🙌🏻
