This popular guide explains how families and churches can celebrate seven Hebrew festivals to enhance their understanding of the message of the Bible.,"This unique book brings deeper meaning to seven Jewish feasts by offering a ""guided tour"" through each celebration from a new testament perspective. The author carefully explains the signi?cance of each feast, the materials necessary to observe them, and full directions for the events. Families and church groups will gain a memorable understanding of the symbolic representations of the Christ as found in the holy celebrations of the Old Testament."
Zimmerman does a good job in explaining the significance of the feasts in the Old Testament, and bridging them over to the New Testament. As far as creating a practical guide for practicing these feasts in your home in the present day, however, I was not impressed. Zimmerman lays out very traditional celebrations. In some ways, that is helpful, because you will be celebrating the traditional feasts. But, with four young children, many of the aspects of the celebrations seem extremely impractical (especially the foods suggested). It would be helpful if, in addition to the traditional celebrations, there would be some helpful adjustments or something to help families make necessary adjustments. Not a bad book, but not great.
I am not giving this book a star rating because it was not what I was looking for, and because of that I wouldn't be fair. However, it is a book that many with a young family will enjoy and be able to use. It is simple in its explanations of the Biblical feasts. I do feel it is more for families with children younger that say 14. I was looking for something a little different. I didn't do any of the recipes or activities. . So I cannot say anything about them.
I read this book along with the Hebrew calendar year and found its insides exciting and relevant. While I don't 100% agree with everything in the book, I would recommend it as a good read if you want to know and get an understanding. In my house, I celebrate these holidays and festivals, so it was informative to get fresh ideas that were from a similar but very different perspective.
#LitLife192021 "A Book in a Genre You Don't Normally Read" This is my second time working through a year of celebrating Biblical feasts in our home with the help of this book (at the instigation of a curriculum I used in 2016, My Father's World, which scheduled the feasts and this book). This book is very helpful in many ways. First, it gives the biblical background material for your understanding. Second, it teaches the New Covenant perspective on the feast for non-Jewish believers. Third, it gives all the particulars to celebrate. Unfortunately, I have found it too exhausting both years to accomplish all the feasts. But we have done the most important parts, and I think it has been enriching. Both years, I couldn't pull off the Feast of Booths. Some negatives are that it's too much to do everything. Some of the feasts have multiple things to do over the course of several days. Don't feel like you need to do everything. For example for the Passover, we remembered how lengthy the feast was five years ago, and managed to shorten it and abbreviate our expectations, and it was really lovely. Second, I think some of her theological connections are a bit of a stretch.
This has been very fun with our homeschooling studies. However, the recipes are not very clear or detailed. So far I have had to look up other variations of the recipes online to find out certain details - like does meat need browned first, when do I add the barley, etc. Just sharing this as a warning for others who may try them out.
We took a semester and celebrated the biblical feasts in our small group. This book was tremendously helpful and practical. Really made the feasts come to life.
