This is our first Cowgirl Kate, my two female panel members (2.10 and 5.5 years old) and me. It consists of a handful of short stories about Kate, a young cowgirl out on the American plains, and her helpmate, the precocious Cocoa, a chocolate-colored quarterhorse.

Cocoa is smart and doesn’t always agree with Kate. Fortunately, he can speak and there is a lot of fun and learning in their brief discourse.

Both of my co-panelists were delighted by the idea of reading about a cowgirl since they like to ride their rocking horse, Lucky, and pretend on their own. They loved the illustrations by Betsy Lewin and laughed at some of her depictions. This was a good thing because they were a little young for some of the points that Silverman was making.

All-in-all, a good experience and likely the first of more encounters with Cowgirl Kate.

A book my 6 yr old loved, a little old for my preschoolers. A solid reading level 4 book, this reader has a good amount of advanced vocabulary words, but not so long that it discourages a new reader. Used it for his read out loud book, which was perfect. It took about 20 mins for him to read and had just enough new vocabulary words to make it challenging. Also, it was a fun and interesting story he could get into. He liked it so much, he asked for more by this author. Great reading book!

This was a cute little book.

I recently read No More "I'm Done!": Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary Grades, and in the book, the author recommended this book to introduce the idea of writing partners during writing workshop. I actually happened to already own this book for some reason, so I decided to check it out!

This is the second story in a series about Cowgirl Kate and her cowhorse, Cocoa. It appears that they just hang out and do stuff around the ranch. In this book, there were 4 chapters each with a different little situation - playing hide and seek, getting new horseshoes for Cocoa, that sort of stuff.

I can definitely read it for both writing workshop and reading with partners time. It's a level J book (so, high first grade level), so I can throw it in my library when we're finished!

Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa are partners through hot and cold, through weak and strong, and through wet and dry. They do everything together. In one chapter, Kate has to convince Cocoa that he would rather have horseshoes than cowboy boots. Molly's calf keeps them busy in two of the four stories. And Cocoa helps Kate practice her roping in another (which comes in handy with Molly's calf). New readers who love Cowgirl Kate andCocoa have a second book to enjoy in the series. 🐴🐄🤠

What a pleasant surprise. There's so much to like about this easy reader.
• partners, problem solving, practicing (with the rope)
• intro to ranch life
• friends

The art fits the story, and a thinking/talking horse fits the pretend play that's so important for this age group.

The stories are meaningful and they put a smile on my face. The kids will be motivated to read this on their own.

Short, simple stories of friendship, starring a young girl and her sassy, snack-loving horse. Perfect for preschoolers who are ready to start reading, as well as for pre-literate littles that love to memorize stories.

I wasn’t familiar with this series until a patron requested some titles we were missing. It’s delightful! I like how this book deals with different ways Kate and Cocoa are partners. Some good laugh out loud moments, too.

Cowgirl Kate convinces Cocoa to let a man put horse shoes on him. They start playing hide and seek, but Cocoa changes the game to hide and eat. This is a fun series for later readers.

This is a great chapter book for young readers. Cocoa and Katie have a special bond and each chapter, though they are short, teach valuable lessons such as cooperating, partnership, and community.

My nephew has asked me to find more of Ms. Silverman's books in this series as he loved the dialogue between Katie and Cocoa.

Cowgirl Kate and her loyal horse, Cocoa, are always together. Whether it's a simple game of hide-and-seek (preferably called hide-and-"eat") or a hard-working day in the sun, these two embody the true meaning of friendship. Kate demonstrates the importance of encouragement and support whenever Cocoa gets new horseshoes. Cocoa faithfully stays by Kate's side when she has trouble finding a lost calf. They are like two peas in a pod who know when it's time to work and when it's time to play!

Erica Silverman has a talent of turning the most basic words into fun and exciting humor. This playful story could put a smile on almost anyone's face. The opening pages begin with Cocoa's desire to wear cowboy boots instead of horseshoes. He simply wanted to be like his friend Kate! The innocence behind his character is impossible not to love. My only desire when reading this story was to have more of a connection between each chapter. The theme and flow of ideas seemed fragmented. One minute the characters were playing hide-and-seek, and the next minute Kate was practicing her roping skills. As an introduction to chapter books, it does not provide the ideal example for children., but is still a great option for ages 6-9!

The simplistically painted illustrations were well matched with the story. With just a few colors (mostly red, brown, yellow, and white), the words were brought to life. My favorite aspect of the illustrations were the facial expressions on Cocoa's face. The pizza loving, individualistic personality of Cocoa could be seen by just the bend of a black painted line.

I would definitely enjoy reading another Kate and Cocoa adventure!

Cute collection of stories featuring a young girl and her horse. The stories are short and the narrator, Liz Morton, is very good at portraying the various characters.

We listened to her narrate the stories on audio CD while taking my brother-in-law, his wife, and 3 1/2-year-old daughter to the airport. She is a bit young for a more lengthy tale, but because this book is broken up into shorter tales, she did fine with it.

Overall, it was a fun diversion and kept her attention for the duration of the CD. We've only read a couple of stories in this series, and as these tales appeal to younger readers, we won't likely pursue reading further unless we are with a young child.

Coincidentally, my little boy was just asking me how horseshoes are put onto a horse ten minutes before we began reading Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa: Partners. Not that this book covers that exactly, but it delighted him that horseshoes played significantly into the storyline. And he did get to see an illustration of Cocoa getting lucky horseshoes.

At this rate, my boy is going to think he holds special powers. He wants to know about something and voila it presents itself.

We'll definitely need to get some more from Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa series. The story and characters made him giggle too many times to ignore.

More fun for fans of Cowgirl Kate and her irrepressible horse Cocoa with the staunch friendship between the two friends as the focus. Cocoa's love of food and eating is played for more laughs but we get to see more cow herding techniques and even some roping. This is a strong entry in the series with Lewin's illustrations ably giving life to the duo.

A fun, cute book, and evidently second in a series.. We're going to look up some of the others in the series. Cowgirl Kate and her horse Cocoa have some great adventures, teach each other good lessons, and have some good fun. There are 4-5 "chapters" or stories in this book. Each can stand on its own, although there is a running theme of working together as "partners" through all of them.

I think this one is one of my favorite Cowgirl Kate books. Out on the range, they have to be partners--the girl and her horse. It's cute and sweet and fun to read and written in a way that new readers can handle.

Notes:
Really like this series, but not as much as Mr. Putter and Tabby books
My horse loving girl likes them a lot.
Stories are a bit TOO simple.
A few good laugh-out-loud moments in every book.

I liked the short chapters. funnier than I expected. Reminded me of Frog and Toad in those aspects. Positive non-princess girl protagonist, too.
