A rejected mate, second chance wolf shifter, standalone romance. SabineThe dreams came. I knew what they meant, even though disbelief rode me hard. I was so far at the bottom of my pack’s ranking that there wasn’t a hope to even be acknowledged to speak with our pack master, let alone convince him of the fact that we were mates.Fated.Moon-blessed.The winter wolves didn’t believe in fated mates. They believed in rank, earning your spot in the pack, and the ability to hold it at all costs. My mate refused to believe me. He destroyed my livelihood, nearly cost me my life, and then in the final hour when I was leaving for good, he came around to beg for my forgiveness. Too bad he couldn’t answer one simple question… After tearing my life apart, my mate still didn’t even know my name.MitchellI knew her name a moment too late to make up for the things I’d done. By the time it was all over, I had more to make up to her as well. First, I had to remake myself into a pack alpha she could respect. Then, I had to hunt her down and make her understand that she was mine.
Christine Michelle runs on coffee and giggles as she writes her angst-fueled romance stories (motorcycle club, rockstar, paranormal, college, & other contemporary as well as women's fiction and marriage in trouble novels). She is a mom to four humans (2 girls, 2 boys – all grown now). When she's not writing books, she enjoys reading, drawing, hiking, or feeding her soul with live music at concerts. Christine is a traveler and has lived all over the USA (and other parts of the world). She currently lives in Rapid City, South Dakota with her two fur babies.
Okay, I’m going to start by saying I’m not a fan of this author. I usually find her story pacing rarely fits the story, too slow and dragged out with rushed endings.
So why did I read this? The blurb, I’m a sucker for rejected mates stories.
I like the heroine, the alpha hero is more of an ass to start with, and not very alpha. I will say the story pacing is good, but there’s a lot going on, a lot of world building is thrown at the reader, almost hap hazard, maybe that’s intentional?
Went with 3 stars because I didn’t hate it, it’s slightly better than 2 but definitely not 4.
I pretty much sped through this one. There wasn't anything meaty to chew on. There are a LOT of info dumps and they even get kinda repetitive. But overall it was entertaining in a cheesy way.
Mitchell and Sabine have never met. But she knows he's her mate because she's seen him in dreams. Yet she also knows that he (as with most people in the pack) doesn't believe in true mates. So she is hesitant to tell him. And she was right to hesitate because he turns out to be a total ass and not only refuses to acknowledge that she is his mate, but he kills her bakery business by commanding that nobody shop there. It's one of those rejected mate stories where there's an evil OW (I guess there usually is), and she's got an agenda that doesn't include Sabine.
But the story never really gets angsty because things aren't what they seem. So it's actually a little boring. There's too much info dumping to enjoy the world building which is kinda shakey anyways.
SO I enjoyed it but was glad it was KU.
Safety is fine (*huge spoilers*) unbeknownst to him and his family, his on and off again girlfriend is the offspring of a 'crone'. Which is some kinda evil witch. Mitchell has had a handful of other shifter ONs over the years too. The author really leaves it up to you as to whether Sabine is a virgin or not. I found this kinda fence sitting annoying.
2.5 Stars I’ve read several books by this author and really enjoyed them because she typically does alpha males and crazy wannabe OW drama, two things I LOVE. Sadly, this was pretty much missing both. And although technically this has a rejected mate scenario, it’s really more of a misunderstanding than a real rejection, so it doesn’t really generate super angsty feels.
The blurb sets it up, the winter wolves have been raised with close-minded beliefs including that fated mates don’t exist, so when Sabine tells Mitchell (the alpha) she’s his mate, he assumes she’s trying to trick him. He doesn’t formally reject her but tells her she is wrong and proceeds to tell the pack she’s a scheming liar, pretty much ruining her business. Stuff happens, and he's forced to work hard to earn her trust and fix his pack.
Bottom Line- It was alright, just a smidge bland at times. Sabine was pretty kickass, but Mitchell was one of the wimpiest alphas I’ve ever read. The pacing was off. It started out good, but the middle DRAGGED on, then the ending was rushed WAY too quickly at 97%. Even the author knew it. “Is it just me or did anyone else find that far too anticlimactic?” I asked. Yes, yes it was.
Diving into this rejected mate story, I expected a ton of angst since this baby is written by one of the queens of angst. Sadly this story wasn't really very angsty at all, but the story rocked anyhow. I loved the entire universe created by this author. I'm definitely looking forward to future shifter stories by this author.
I love Christine Michelle and will read everything she publishes. Her angst skills are so on-point for me! She manages to sustain angst through most of a book, and for me, that is like a cat rolling around in a pile of catnip. As with most CM books, a reader will find astute observations about class, money, and behavior. Yes, it’s a little soapy. Bring it on!! I loved this new PNR road she is heading down. The Shifter Rejection trope usually manages to punch me in the gut!
If you have read CM and it didn’t work for you in the past, I don’t know that you’ll find this any different, btw…As a fan, I found this one didn’t deviate from my expectations (happily for me! 🤗).
Mitchell is an Alpha to the Winter pack. Sabine is a baker in the pack. She's been dreaming of her mate for some time. When he walks in to the bakery and they touch to start the bonding process he denies it.
During that time he is terrible and does some mean things. However, not all is as it seems. There's beings involved that causes trouble and chaos.
I know CM can write an alphahole cause I've read most of her biker books and loved them.
What happened here? The "H" was the most non-alpha Alpha shifter I may have ever read... and I've read a lot of shifter books. It didn't actually make clear why he was the Alpha when his father was still alive and well. Alpha's just retire in this world? No challenges? His father definitely seemed smarter if not stronger, it just didn't make sense. And, of course, his leadership skills sucked, he was just kind of dumb and gullible.
Anyway, would I read another in this series? Of course I would, it's Christine Michelle!
There was a lot of world building in this that could be beneficial for future books which can wrap up or expand upon what I felt were a lot of loose ends or plot holes not fully explained. That being said, a lot could have been left out as well so as a reader, I am not left trying to puzzle things out that either wrap up quickly off page or do not get expanded on enough to make me understand.
Rejected mate = h very quickly and directly tells the H that he is her fated mate. H's response is denial and to instantly cut down the h. H goes further and as the alpha, tells h her business is dunzo, and she is persona non grata.
Cheating = after the rejection, H goes of to bang OW and the h is made to feel literal/possible heart stopping pain and agony. H's parents are the one who have to practically drag H off OW to make him stop. Even after the H is a big old baby about it until it is demonstrated how truly painful what he did was (h was asked to just kiss OM and H about had a heart attack)
OW drama = it was present but then quickly dispersed. OW was a type of witch (kind of explained but left a little open ended). OW knew that sex with H would hurt and possibly kill h which in turn could kill H, but she pushed on through anyway. OW gets "jailed" for knowingly trying to kill the H (nevermind the h, which would have been a slap on the wrist, but by golly she went after the alpha!). And then we are told that off page, OW was executed, but then we find out, not really, but maybe she got away by "body jumping" but then again some Fae said her spirit was still present so they moved an entire house into fae realm???!!?? It was a bit much and not really resolved enough for a definite ending to OW. A few OW caused the h some literal pain as well by touching the H who allowed it but "discreetly" tried to stop it but H did not want to cause too big a fuss so was trying to be so nice about it. Disregarding the fact that h was in literal pain from what H allowed, it also showed his entire pack that he must not feel too strongly about h if he is letting OWs feel up on him without a strong rejection or at the very least some kind of reprimand. Those OW end up later leaving the pack, but H, at least not that I remember, never comes out to declare his undying devotion, loyalty or love to the h.
A lot of actions by the H and various pack members is explained away as being a result of enchantment by a "hag" and the hag's two children. It is explained and forces the h (in my opinion) into forgiving the H.
Grovel = it was there. The h is by no means a doormat, but a lot of the forgiveness/understanding is as result of shifting blame from H to the hag/enchantments. It muddied up the grovel.
I really enjoy and like this author. I have always and will always buy and read her books. Si while this was not my favorite, it was a new expansion into a universe that further books could build off of.

Not bad but not the best though. The heroine is a wolf shifter snd she finds out she’s her alpha fated mate. Unfortunately the alpha and his pack don’t believe in fated mates so she doesn’t know what to do, she dreams of him and she also is able to understand when op are mates, eventually she decides to tell him. Wrong move. He thinks she’s a witch and proceeds to ruin her bakery shop ( why so many heroines have a bakery shop? Why not a beautician or a hair dresser or a shoe shop ? They are mostly bakery shops…curious) and deprives her of all her incomes. He then goes home and most kiss her having sex with his current floozy. He stops only because his mother tells him he’s hurting his mate. So, his parents hid from him and the back the fact that they are fated mates and that fated mates are not superstition but reality, he doesn’t know anything about it and it turns out he is charmed by an old witch, that takes other people’s bodies and does what she wants. The heroine leaves his pack and he follows and begs for a second chance. There’s not much more after this, it’s all about the witch, the curses, the pack being bewitched and the hero coming out of his trance. So he can’t be blamed after all since he was drugged and under spell. And the heroine doesn’t blame him much. There’s the fact that he’s a bad and dumb alpha and that there’s too much story of the witch, the pack, some other grandparents and I was so bored after the first half of the book. It can be considered cheating but he was under a spell so he was not in his full faculties, so how can I fell angst. I don’t dislike the book but it was not very entertaining. The heroine is a badass and I liked her, she’s smarter and stronger than the dumb alpha hero which I liked a lot.
I love a rejected mate story because of all the angst, feels, OW drama and all the growly "MINE"! I didn't get that here. Unfortunately the constant info dumping totally detracted from the story, there was little to no romance, same with the angst and feels - nothing. I get world building for a paranormal story but the constant info dumps got old really fast.
It didn't help that the MC who is the alpha of the pack was beyond a total beta, I honestly don't know how he managed the pack when he couldn't manage himself.
This book started as a typical arrogant alpha wolf rejecting his mate:
1) because his pack doesn't believe in fated mates
2 ) because he has a sort-of girlfriend who regularly wins challenges of rank
3) because the "fated" female is a low-ranking wolf who has never participated in fights for rank; in fact, she's just a baker
4) because he's never noticed her before, or even knows her name, despite the fact that she was a pack member from birth
Because of all of this, he sets about ruining her business, shunning her from the pack and cheating on her with his superior girlfriend.
However, this where the story takes a turn for a different kind of plot all together. The low-ranking non-fighting baker-wolf shows her intelligence, her maturity, her intuition and her strength immediately-- and begins to uncover generations of foul magic and corruption at the highest levels of the pack. This is the main plot of the book, all while the alpha recognizes their bond, tries to win her forgiveness and learn to be a true mate to her. The world-building is good; I haven't read her other paranormal-fantasy books but I feel like there are cross-over characters with their own interesting backstories. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The alpha could have been.... more alpha, but there are reasons, as they all find out
This is a standalone werewolf romance, where the female is basically rejected by the Alpha male. He never says the words because he doesn’t believe in mates that were destined to be by the moon goddess. His entire family stopped believing in fated mates several generations ago, and then they decreed that their pack should stop believing too.
The story line is pretty well thought out, and I loved the FMC because she had a brain! Her mother had taught her all about fated mates, along with a ton of other information that a Luna should know. Our girl was really smart, and she was really strong.
Our so-called Hero was not smart. He was, as usual, arrogant. And since he didn’t believe in fated mates, he almost killed our girl by effing another woman. Fortunately his mother (yes, his own mother) figured out what was happening and put an immediate halt to his boning that OW.
This is really a good book and I enjoyed it immensely. There are several grammatical mistakes that should have been corrected because they were easily seen by me… you get a shock, not a sock of surprise.
Recommended though. It’s good and it was well written.
I just loved this fresh and interesting take on Fated Mates.
It was so wonderful to see Christine bring her own brand of character development to my favorite PNR category, Wolf Shifter. She has a unique way of making her characters real and raw, showing you all their faults but also getting you to care about them anyway.
The imagery in this book was wonderful. I loved the beautiful descriptions of the wolves, their coats and fur, as well as Sabine's eyes! So much of a story for me is in setting the scene, and Christine does this beautifully.
I also loved the different takes on traditions in the story. It was neat to see the different packs, and the history between them. I was so glad that Sabine had a safe place to go when her mate was still not doing the right thing. Plus, her dad was awesome!
All in all, I am very much looking forward to more books in this series, and I know Christine will deliver with the same magic that she does everything else. And I am here for the ride!!
I liked the first like 40% and it was fun to hate Mitchell, and Sabine was a badass and stood her ground. But similar to what other reviews brought up, the 'mind control' angle in the last 40% of the book felt like a cop out and made the grovel unsatisfying, since Mitchell gets to be a completely braindead shithead and blame it on magic.
The way the heroine is wronged felt like a bit of a hybrid of the GroveltoHEA story Night and Neera and Smokey. Fun in a 'I can't believe the audacity of this bitch' kind of way, but it's only satisfying when the hero actually owns up to things and seems like he's changed and improved in a significant way, and with Mitchell by the end I still believed that he was a fucking idiot.
Christine Michelle has done it again. This is one of my favorite themes rejected mate and Christine has put a different spin on it and it worked really darn great. I oooohhed a lot and did wince a coupled of times at the H Mitchell. Sorry no spoilers from me, no fun in that just read this crazy fun book! Sabine is a great h she was strong, smart and thoughtful. She stood her ground even when she knew there would be blowback. I loved that she was quick with her words, I did laugh at some of the dumb stuff Mitchell did. The story takes a spin and we learn more of what was happening to have all this conflict.
And the drama was off the charts with what she did and who she ultimately was to Mitchell! That was a crazy fun scene!
This book was a fantastic fun read that will keep you engaged, I thoroughly loved this one.
Normally I love Ms. Michelle's stuff. She's an almost instabuy, but when I read the teaser of this, I one-clicked it. Overall, entertaining, but it was like the ending was an afterthought.
I love how Ms. Michelle writes sassy. The FMC, Sabine, is just that. Sassy, but with a touch of martyr syndrome. Mitchell is a himbo through and through, and even if he's trying to do best for the pack, he's just dumb. Blame the family curse all you want, he still makes stupid choices after he's 'freed' from the pact.
The ending was the only thing I had issues with. It just went POOF! Literally. I get the feeling if this is the beginning of the series, this ending will come back into play. If so, I'll change my opinion.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed the story right up until it seemed to restart when it could have just ended when the main characters returned to Winter Pack.
Prior to that the story moved at a good pace although I did want to slap the characters at times.
But I think where I really lost it was when a female character was introduced at Summer Pack, brought to Winter Pack where she kind of showed her butt, was given a room in the pack house, and never heard from again. What happened to her? She wasn't integral to the story - really kind of unnecessary - but she was brought in and then went poof?!? I don't like unfinished story lines with the exception of an occasional and obvious cliffhanger. Which this wasn't.
Alpha Stormborn is the very handsome head strong Alpha male of the Winter pack. He enjoys the single life and isn’t short of female company. He has little regard for the lower ranking members of his pack and doesn’t believe in fated mates.
Sabine, the beautiful bakery shop owner does believe in moon blessed mates and she knows who her fated mate is. After meeting each other, they immediately feel the connection. But Alpha Stormborns reaction and behaviour towards her have her fleeing the pack.
I really liked this story, full of twists, deception, malevolence and angst, it was a real page turner.
I am terrible with reviews but I know this is right after release day so I wanted to give my opinion. The writing was great and the story flowed well, maybe a little fast but still good. It was a pretty typical shifter world. There was betrayal and I do feel like it was handled well for the circumstances. I read a lot of betrayal/cheating and other “unsafe” romances. I would not really classify this book as unsafe to me. Everything was explained and it all made sense.
This book was fantastic until about 3/4 of the way through and then it just went bonkers and the ending (with the exception of the last chapter being a good wrap up of the future) is entirely too anticlimactic and I wanted to scream with what happened with the grandfather’s friends. I genuinely do not understand how you could write such a neat, somewhat detailed fantasy novel and then, poof, the whole issue is wrapped up and done just like that.
You gotta love when the supernatural have to go through twists and turns to find a Happily Ever After! This is a new spin on how the Werewolf community may function. If you love shifter romance or amazing creative storytelling buy this book, get comfy and start reading.
Sabine is my spirit animal (see what I did there) she's powerful and smart but keeps it low key until she realizes the Alpha is her moon blessed mate. He's woefully ignorant about both mates and his pack. Sabine brings him up to speed on both these things while trying to decide what to do with the bond between them. Just read it!
This is a well written, funny story with a clever spin on the shifter-romance genre. The author's characters are well developed withIn a clever storyline. Many funny scenes; some had me in tears. I've read and enjoyed other work from this author, but this one is now my favorite.
Had angst but it was handled with level headed people. Not a cookie cutter shifter story (I enjoy cookie cutter but innovation is fun too).
Heroine was kind, strong and likable but I wanted to throat punch the hero. I never really fell for him even though it was obvious he was trying to be better for her, eventually.
Well, darn. What started out to be an angsty read, completely fizzled out. Turns out the Winter Pack and it's Alpha were under a spell from a witch and her pawns. One pawn being the ow. Very fantastical and a little too magicky for me. No real drama to be seen. And everything was tied up in a nice little bow. Definitely prefer this author's MC books

I was really into the first half of this, but I felt like it just had a lot going on after that. So much that everything felt really rushed and overly convenient in the resolution. There also really isn't a grovel. It just relies on past circumstances in the MMC's family to essentially offer excuses for what he did. It just felt like a cop out.
I loved that she made Sabine character a strong one. At the beginning you wouldn’t think that of her since she didn’t want to let her alpha know he was her mate. Throughout the story it showed how strong she was.
