Sunshine and the Vamp

Rate this book
Best intentions can go suck it.

I walked into a dark alley with the best of intentions and look where that got me. Drugged, kidnapped and thrown into a world I didn’t even know existed.

Now I’m being held captive by a hot as sin vampire, whilst trying not to be killed by his wife and, oh yeah, he’s the leader of the Russian Mob and I’m suddenly a target. Go me.

Safe to say, I’m not sure I’ll do anything for anyone ever again.

Follow Benji as he learns about vampires, the Russian mob and tries to dodge a knife wielding soon-to-be ex wife. There are curse words, graphic sexual scenes and lots of blood (hey, it’s a book about vampires…). Recommended for 18+ only.

DNF @ 33%.

I admit, I almost stopped this before I even started when I read the author’s note when I read the part:

(because let’s face it, who doesn’t love a psychopathic book boyfriend who will ask you to run just so he can chase you down and fuck you into the ground like an animal?).

Ick. Not everyone is trying to self-insert, thanks.

But, mafia vampire dark romance could be a fun time.

However, 1/3 into the book, I feel like there’s been more time introducing side characters (I assume as set up for later in the series) and meanwhile, not much has happened with our two MCs.

It’s also instalust, which like, half the fun on a dark romance is at least one party being a tad reluctant, not both of them immediately drooling after the other.

I want more plot, less characters, more hate, less love. It is suppose to be be dark, after all.

Benji is a sweet guy who’s had a tough dealing as of late, and it definitely takes a turn to the extreme when he’s caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time 😣 kidnapped into den of the mob boss and a whole other world he didn’t know existed Benji has his eyes opened a lot 👀 but this may also be the best thing to ever happen to him as Damyr is obsessed 😍 and he’s going to do anything he can to keep this fragile human! The chemistry between the two guys is strong 🔥 their is a power dynamic eye even the two but it’s a good balance Benji still maintains his bratty bite (ironically) and Damyr learns to soften and bend 🥰 a good storyline woven with spiciness.

Sunshine and the Vamp is a standalone MM romance and book one in the Morozov Family series.

Benji is a medical student resident whose life gets turned upside down when, as he races to render aid, he inadvertently witnesses vampire activity. He soon finds himself the unexpected and zip tied “guest” of the vampire mafia don. There is more going on than meets the eye.

Damyr is a 500 year old vampire who has built his family into one of the three leaders of the supernatural community. He is inexplicably drawn to Benji and decides to keep him, whether Benji wants to stay or not.

The two soon discover that there is more to their connection than they knew. Unfortunately, outside forces are beginning to move against Damyr and Benji becomes a tempting target.

Damyr is unbending in his insistence that Benji is now his and protects him fiercely. Their intense connection and attraction are swoony. A fun PNR read.

Vampire mafia romance with fated mates and violence. Because of the subject matter, I was so stoked to read this. There are definitely a couple scenes in this book that were fun or sexy, which were enjoyable, but overall I found myself just trying to get through till the end.

There are way too many characters, but they’re not developed at all, so it just feels like there’s a bunch of people walking around who are all fairly forgettable. We’re kind of just told a lot of things about characters’ relationships or backgrounds, without any actual significance to the plot as well. The two MMCs do have chemistry, but it’s very surface level.

This is one of those instances where I feel like there were some great ideas, but the execution wasn’t solid.

some parts were entertaining. I was reallyyyy looking forward to vampires & mafia 😮‍💨 unfortunately the writing needed some editing. to the point I didn’t feel sucked in, I struggled to stay connected. it felt really long for a short book.

Though Benji & Damyr really had potential there was something missing between them. There wasn’t a
✨ spark ✨or a moment where I went “ohhh.” Now with the side characters, I didn’t feel the difference between them either. a lot of the dialogue felt very repetitive in tone.

side character shoutout: Vlad was one of the characters that really had some personality and Acheron - I just know he’s a little shit 💀 I would read their books 🙂‍↕️

This was a really fun book! It's not nearly as dark as it could've been, when mafia vampires are involved. They seemed to have a lot of restraint and some kind of morals, for a bunch of self-proclaimed psychos. It's got a good amount of spice, some action and intrigue, and a satisfying ending. I do have to point out, though, that it really deserved to be properly edited. I just tried not to let it bug me too much, and the story really was worth pushing past it.

I like how it's set up for future books, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next... hopefully Byron's story, though I wouldn't say no to Vlad.

I thought this was a spinoff or something because it introduces so many characters right away, a lot to keep track of. After finally getting the hang of the plot and characters over halfway through, it turned into a pretty good story. I will probably read the next one because I enjoyed everything after the worldbuilding was done.

I wanted to give this a better rating but ultimately there were things that kind of ruined it for me. I did find the title a little misleading because I definitely wouldn’t classify Benji as sunshine personified. He was way more feisty than he was sunshine…

We have vampire Damyr and doctor Benji who end up being mates. I liked both of the characters and the side characters as well. There were a lot of moments where you had to suspend your belief and a lot of things that didn’t make sense. There was also a good amount of typos. Even with that it was an entertaining read. My favorite part is how possessive Damyr is!! He’s sooo possessive & obsessed with his man.

There were two things that ruined it for me though. One it has a dead lover trope. And it’s annoying that even centuries later Damyr still feels some type of way about this guy. The big thing that ruined it was his wife. So he’s technically married. He never loved her and they haven’t been together for 80 years but she still has access to his house. Also he finds his mate in Benji but by the end of the book he’s still married!! He never talks about absolving the marriage or divorce at all. So he’s married to this crazy ass annoying ass woman but yet is mated to Benji. It’s super annoying and it definitely took stars off for me. Was also annoyed that Benji says I love you and Damyr doesn’t say it back!! At all, none from him at all in this book.

Also I’m kind bummed of the crumbs we get for the MMM that will no doubt happen. I don’t like MMM especially when two of them are twins. I want the twins to get separate books but that’s just my preference. Also I’m hoping their book is last in the series so I can read all the other ones and skip that one.

While they are mates it felt HFN and the plot didn’t get wrapped up so wonder if it’s going to continue into the next book.

NO CHEATING (Damyr is married but he says on paper only and both him and his wife sleep with other people)
LIGHT OM DRAMA (Damyr is super possessive, like super)
NO THIRD ACT BREAK UP
AGE GAP 500/25
VAMPIRE/DOCTOR

Alright… I really enjoyed this story, and if it weren’t for the massive amount of errors and typos and other editing issues, it would have been a 4-star read. There are two major plot holes, repetition, and loads of missing words and errors and typos, including major apostrophe and comma issues and tense changing from past to present throughout. And sentence structure as a whole needs a lot of work. These problems don’t reflect the UK writing style. But I will admit that some words and phrasing was odd to me as a US reader. Some things like “was stood” instead of simply “stood” and “leant” instead of “leaned.” If this author can get a better editor and/or better proofreaders, they’ll be in great shape, because I really loved the story, characters, and overall tone.

Now for the good:
I was hooked from the beginning. Benji is a great character, and his snark and whit were funny and engaging. This is a story of fated mates with a bond that each MC feels, and it pulls them together in order to complete fate’s plan. So, with that in mind, the insta-connection and lust makes sense. And I like these stories, especially in PNR, so insta-love will never be a complaint of mine.

The tension, both emotional and sexual, were done well. I loved how Damyr was a tough guy, but he practically turns to mush for Benji. Their sexy times are nice and passionate, and I liked the blood-drinking aspects with regard to mates. Also, this isn’t a typical mob/mafia dynamic, which I enjoyed as something different. There are 3 families that more or less work together to keep the peace, but they each do their own thing to make money. Yes, there’s still illegal stuff, but that’s not the main focus of this story. And they have strict rules about killing humans, innocents, and without great cause.

I absolutely love the supporting characters, especially Vlad. I’d really like to see him get a book. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve read anything else from this author, so I’m unfamiliar with their other works. This doesn’t seem to be a series? But, honestly, if any of the side guys get a book, I’m there. The only thing that will change my mind is if any go MM+ or twincest… I picked this up for free, but it was a good find, and, despite the errors, I’d read it again.

When Benji leaves work one day he’s not expecting his life to change forever. Kidnapped by an extremely sexy crime boss who makes him feel things he’s never felt before, and is under attack by some unknown blackmailer and assassin determined to blow up his life and now apparently Benji’s too. Then to top it all off he finds out they aren’t just crime lords but Vampires with one of my favourite ever reactions to this news “Did he sparkle? That I definitely could not get on board with.” Brilliant! Love a dark romance that still gives you the occasional lol moments.
Fantastic storyline with the relationship development between Benji and Damyr and the author did some really strong character work with these two characters really making you feel connected. The connection between these two characters was palpable leading to some very intense MM scenes. Some great connections with some of the other characters too and loved how the author showed multiple facets of their personalities like Vlad and the cat or Byron’s relationship with Bishop.
I think the storyline with the blackmailer (trying to keep this spoiler free) was very clever and kept me gripped. I read 80% of this book in one sitting it had be that desperate to know what happened next. And it did not disappoint.
I think this is the first book I’ve read by this author but judging by the quality of this book, it won’t be the last!

Sunshine and the Vamp by Bailey Grayson is book one in the Morozov Family; captured my attention just by the title. Then when I read the blurb my interest was piqued hook line and sinker. I flew through the chapters like no one’s business… my kindle had a workout. Needless to say I was expecting a dark mafia, vampires and a m/m romance. I wasn't expecting to fall for the characters as much as I did. Benji and Damyr just captured my heart with their unexpected sweetness of the human being, the light of a vampire’s life. I loved the grump/sunshine-ness of of this story… it was very much a highlight. Something else I really enjoyed was their interactions. Plus the side characters were great as well. They were kind of fun and just added something to the story. I also liked seeing Benji’s strength shine through. There was some funny parts I wasn’t expecting that kept a smile on my face. It was such a great balance between the sweet and the dark. Not to mention the spicy bits was nice too. This was such a great reading experience! It was written well with a plot and cast of characters that just shine. I’m really looking forward to more from this world. There’s a lot of great things about this book and you should experience/feel them for yourself. If you enjoy reading fated mates, vampire/human, paranormal m/m romance then this book is 100% for you. I would highly recommend… two thumbs up.

I really enjoyed this from beginning to end. Although I really need these authors to understand what a dark read is because this is not dark, definitely pushes the limits into a grey area though.
Damyr was a bit of a lovable douche. He had the usual temperament that comes with a vampire of a certain age and carried himself as he should. He was the boss and it was portrayed well by himself and those around him. From the beginning I knew he wasn’t going to let Benji go. As soon as he said he felt something I knew. I didn’t think it would be a fated mate story but boom surprise. I love how it didn’t take the usual road of the human not feeling the connection. That just makes things more complicated can between them things didn’t need any more complications.
Benji was a little spitfire. He never backed down, no matter how stupid it seemed to do so. But in the end it made everyone respect or at least not worry about his presence.
Now the mob aspect was unnecessary but I get why it’s there. It added to the true level of destruction when the time came. Even though now I just wonder what happened with all that because it wasn’t mentioned in the aftermath. The main event was quite interesting to try to piece together and I completely got it wrong. I never would have guessed who it was and exactly why. The puzzle slowly comes together but trust you won’t get it until he reveals himself and then it’s like “but why?”

This was my first book by this author. And I really did enjoy the book. This was my first time reading a vampire/mafia/MM book and I am hoping for more books like this.

I enjoyed the storyline. I wished it hadn’t been so Insta love in the beginning, as I kinda wish there was a little bit more enemies to lovers for a longer period at a time than there was. I thought the character development wasn’t as good as I was hoping. We got some background on each of them, but I would like to have learned more about each of the characters.

I did enjoy the side characters. I’m hoping there are going to be books on all of his core team. I think as this author writes the next one I am hoping that there will be more “love “scenes and some more character development.

I saw some people say this was really dark, but I didn’t think it was that dark. There was no bullying, there was no BDSM, there were definitely bloody scenes because it’s a mafia book. There was kidnapping and some abuse by kidnappers. In the synopsis, it mentions the wife wanting to kill the human in this book, but that was a very, very small part of the book so I didn’t think that caused me a lot of angst like I thought it would.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. I thought it was entertaining. There were some really good hot scenes. I wish there were more, but I’m not disappointed in how many there were. And I’m looking forward to reading more by the author.

This says that it’s 306 pages, but it surprisingly didn’t seem like it. It was a pretty quick read for me. There are a lot of details that easily could have been added that weren’t. It didn’t hurt the story much, but I would’ve liked to have seen a few things elaborated on.

This has some serious insta-lust for both men. Benji was wanting Damyr before he even knew he was a good guy. Well, a good-ish guy. He is a dangerous mobster, but the dangerous mobster worships the ground his newfound mate walks on.

This is listed as being dark, but I didn’t really see it. Sure, there’s a bit of violence, and a little bit of mystery, but I found it to be more of a fun read than a dark one. The next book in the series is Wilder’s and Byron’s, Shadow and the Witch: Morozov Family: Book Two. I’m interested in seeing their story.

This is my first by this author.

This book seemed to be everything I enjoyed: mafia, vampires, and morally gray. However, the quality of writing just wasn’t there.

The biggest issue was characters distinction. All of the vampire clan members, werewolves and magic users all had the exact same personality. Same way of speaking, same humor; no unique accents, personality traits, ticks or even overly descriptive physical characteristics. You could have swapped out any other supernatural character for the MC vampire, and it would have been the same story. Which makes the relationship between the two MCs feel very disingenuous, because there’s nothing between them that doesn’t feel manufactured or like they were in any way a good fit. The mystical mate bond could have formed between the human MC and anyone and it would have been the same.

I also really dislike books where some big bad clan leader or mafia don has such out of control emotions that he’s constantly shouting, hurting his own people, destroying stuff in a tantrum, etc. Instead of a badass leader, it feels like we have a 500 year old vampiric preteen in charge who shouldn’t even be allowed to run a lemonade stand.

So if you’re just looking for a quick read, you may still enjoy this. But by the end I was definitely skimming to get it over with.

Vampire mafia mob boss and a human sign me up! This was the first vampire MM story I read, and it did not disappoint; it was super entertaining and enjoyable.

Benji, after a series of bad luck situations, finds himself in one of the most visited bars in Misthaven’s town. To try and channel out all his frustration of being wrongly fired from his residency as a doctor. This led him to be entangled in a shady situation with the Morozov family and has caught the attention of the very dangerous mob boss Dante.

Benji and Dante’s relationship starts in a very abrupt way; there is clearly attraction between them and a magnetizing force that is hard to not succumb to. I loved the way Benji stood up for himself in any given situation and was able to find some sort of connection with Dante. The vampire couldn’t help but fall for his human and finally found his one and only.
The fantasy aspect and how everything works with vampires was nice to know and explore.

The story is full of mysteries and questions that are answered throughout the course of the story and invest the readers in a thrilling way. How this society works with three major families in charge of the town also sparks curiosity with side characters that are presented in the book.

I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Sunshine and the Vamp kicks off with a brutally relatable lesson: no good deed goes unpunished. Our hero, Benji, learns this the hard way after a simple act of friendship plunges him into a world of supernatural mafias, betrayal, and a dangerously attractive vampire captor.

This book is a whirlwind of fun, danger, and sizzling tension. Benji is an instantly endearing protagonist, his inner monologue is hilariously sarcastic even in the face of mortal peril, making his journey from ordinary guy to mafia-adjacent captive a joy to follow. His dynamic with the brooding vampire leader, Damyr, is the heart of the story, crackling with an attraction that both characters are equally frustrated by and drawn to.

While the story delivers a satisfying, steamy romance and a plot full of intrigue and looming threats, some readers might find the final act resolves a little too quickly, leaving a few threads about Benji's past life wishing for more closure. However, if you're looking for a fast-paced, funny, and spicy paranormal romance with a sassy main character who refuses to be a damsel in distress, this book is an absolute delight. Just be prepared to learn Benji's lesson: best intentions can, indeed, go suck it.

More like snarky and the Vamp

Benji is more snarky/sassy than sunshine. So the title is a little misleading.

The many MANY spelling and grammatical errors were a bit distracting. I don't think this is a US author, so that could be why they use "nt" instead of "ed" when ending words, but it was a little annoying. For example, they use "learnt" instead of "learned".

The plot itself was pretty typical and a little cliché, but it was good. I did like the story for the most part. I loved the side characters and am looking forward to their books. I liked that Damyr wasn't broody and "mysterious" like most authors try to make vampires out to be.

There was A LOT left unanswered- Damyr's marriage situation. What happened with Ronin? Did Benji finish residency? What about Maya? What about the house he owned? What about the creepy boss that got him fired? Why didn't the mind wiping work on him? What happened to Damyr's businesses after the raids?

There wasn't enough spice. It was maybe 2/5 spicy. Why was the foreplay leading up to the sex more sexy than the actual sex?

I'm always a sucker for a grumpy sunshine duo. I love the relationship dynamic, it's always fun when one character simply takes what they want because they can whilst the other always gives it to them despite not understanding why they do.

I honestly felt the plot outside the relationship was a missed opportunity. I expected more when the body of the prince he was supposed to have killed years ago was dropped at their doorstep. It would have been more interesting if this had delved into a conspiracy with the council and government to have faked his death for some reason or another and lead to unraveling a hidden corruption that threatens the world as a whole. With Ronin being some kind of whistleblower hacker on the inside trying to get the information out.

But no, that got dropped as soon as the body was buried and the quickly forgotten. Seriously it is never explained how someone he thought he'd killed was still alive (tho now dead again). Instead the plot of poor unloved evil sibling seeking revenge for a murder the MC didn't even commit back in the 1800s.

Oh and the "you're in danger so we need to move you somewhere safe, only for them to get ambushed and kidnapped enroute" could be seen a million miles away and is so cliche.

3/5 because it was really good and has potential, the romance and spice are wonderful. The plot just missed a great opportunity to instead go for something cliche.

Benji is having a very bad day as he looses his job through absolutely no fault of his own so when his bestie suggests a night on the town to help him out of his slump you would have though that a night of slinging shots and perhaps losing himself on the dance floor with some hunk or looking for a one night stand would cheer him up however his day initially goes from bad to worse and by worse we mean events lead to him w being tied up - and not in a good way in a possibly life threatening situation. So never say ever that your day cant get any worse!

Damyr has no idea why Benji who is just a mortgage intrigues him so much and in the past 500 years or so he has never ever been infatuated with anyone but then everything shifts and both of their worlds are affected in ways that neither ever thought possible.

This story has danger, intrigue, steam & sizzle, snark & humor plus some really well scripted scenes making you feel teh family dynamic and not just see it.

I loved this storey so much and devoured it totally in one sitting - cant wait for more in this world.!!

Benji got fired for a BS claim. Things go from bad to worse when he tries to defend a guy and finds himself smack dab in the middle of a Mafia stand down. His life is completely flipped upside down.

Dampyr, leader of the Morozov Family, finds himself deeply intrigued in this human. Enough to spare his life and is very conflicted. After 500 years, he finds someone who breaks down his walls.

The title of this, was absolutely fitting. I've been on a MM kick and this was such a satisfying story. I absolutely loooved Benji and Damyr so much!! Benji was such a cinnamon roll and having someone the complete opposite, is one of my weaknesses. The chemistry was fire. I did feel it was slow in some parts, but overall, I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading more from this series!

Benji and Damyr meet when Benji tries to help someone, not realizing that person stole from Damyr. Thinking that Benji knows the person who stole from him, Damyr kidnaps him, hoping he can get info from Benji. From the beginning they feel a pull towards each other until Damyr shows up, on deaths door and only Benji can save him with his blood - because they are mates. Meanwhile Damyr is trying to protect Benji from his world as a vampire and figure out who is threatening him. Overall this was good. There were some loose ends, like why they all thought the man delivered to Damyr in a box was dead only to find out he was alive. It was a lot of action, but the main characters were reacting to events instead of a little of both - acting and reacting. It left me feeling like something was missing. Despite this, the story was my kind of morally grey, with a mob boss that worshipped Benji and wouldn't hurt a hair on his head, while he burned the world for him. Spice level: 1.5

Benjamin aka Benji had had a day first released from his residency by the Board, from a job he loved because he did not capitulate to Dr. Kingsly’s ugly request. Benji live in Misthaven a very large city that could have been the capital of the country, with one little problem it was home to three main crime families. On his way home with his box of stuff from work, he had an odd experience right next to the Morozov building where the largest of the crime families owed. He finally decided to say the heck with the day and get his friend Maya and go out and have fun. Little did Benji realize that his human life was about to be in for the shock of his life. In this story, wow you have a vendetta, politics, and love. When Benji meets Damyr then you know you are going to get some real steamy interaction. And not to forget the supernatural that no one is to know about. This is energizing, upbeat and with other things story to just keep you glue to your chair.

Fun read 💜✨

I really enjoyed Damyr, Benji + this entire world. Talk about colorful and complex characters 😉. This dark vampire mafia read wasn't what I expected. There was plenty of snark and levity amidst the dark and twisty parts. Heightened emotions are the name of the game within these pages.

• Grumpy Sunshine
• MM
• paranormal
• Fated mates
• Dark Vampire Mafia
• Kidnapping to Lover
• Stalker

Get ready for *all* kinds of excitement! Past history comes back to haunt the present while a stalker taunts our main characters. There's definitely intrigue galore. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for these characters. Especially as we're introduced to a few new ones towards the end of this book that are interesting. Benji has a heart of gold, and I look forward to seeing him navigate this new world he's been dropped into 😉. This motley crew had me hooked from the get go.

Benji thought that the worst that could have happened to him was unjustly losing his job. Yet the next events look like a nightmare - kidnapped, interrogated, with no outlook to ever come back to his old life and the few friends he has. What's more disturbing though, is his attraction to his kidnapper, Damyr Morozov, a powerful and brutal man. The pull is undeniable, and Benji easily ignores all the red flags to follow his instincts, only to find himself in the middle of deadly personal vendetta.
Quite the enjoyable read for fans of PNR, a good old vampire romance, and no objection to M/M main couple. I found the Morozov family very interesting, including all the extra characters living with them (Byron, especially - that guy is definitely a certified maniac). I also found the addition of Wilder and Acheron in the whole chaos entertaining. The story was rather fast paced and straightforward, with only a little mystery in it. Let's see what the next books bring.

It’s only been two days since I finished Sunshine and the Vamp, and I’m already forgetting major plot points. Honestly, it wasn’t until I opened Goodreads to log it that I went, “Oh yeah, that happened.” That might say more about the state of my brain lately, but it also says something about the book’s staying power.

What I do remember is this: I kept hoping for more connection between the two male leads. There were a lot of characters introduced—I'm assuming they'll each take the spotlight in future books—but in this one, the romance didn’t land for me. I found myself wanting more chemistry, more spark, more vibe between the leads. Watching people fall in love (or at least genuinely connect) has been my thing lately, and this didn’t scratch that itch.

That said, there were hints of a fun ride in the world and side characters. I might pick up the next book to see where it goes. But as far as this one goes, the falling-in-love part left me wanting.

So many things to love about this for me! Human that doesn't know about supes? Grumpy sunshine? Fated mates/Insta love? Past coming back to haunt you? Plenty of MM steam? It's got it all!

Benji is a medical student who finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Damyr is the head of one of the town's three mafia families - it's how they keep supes under the human radar. When their worlds unexpectedly collide, both learn something new.

The characters in this book at wonderful. Not just the two leads, who are hot and perfectly matched, but the supporting characters are compellingly written, and I hope we find out more about them in the future.

The plot is a perfect mix of things going oh so right, and so very wrong at the same time which keeps you engaged through to the end.

This is billed as book one, so I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Thought this book would be really dark based on the short story I read of Byron & Bishop from the anthology but it wasn’t too dark. Mostly kinda funny (to me) the way everyone acts around each other; all very loyal but psycho with some funny quips thrown in. Acheron likes to stir things up, Byron seems to be more fascinated with blööd than the vampires, Vlad is a big protector, Aleksey seems kinda uptight, Benji is weak beings he’s a human but still tries to stand up for himself, & Damyr is supposed to be all big bad & fierce but has a softer side to him when it comes to love. It would be nice to maybe see a book for the POV of each of the other of the three families beings they’re different species.
