However Small and Hidden

Rate this book
In Civil Disobedience, Henry David Thoreau wrote that he required that every writer offer, "a simple and sincere account of his own life, and not merely what he has heard of other men's." However Small and Hidden does just that, initially through essays and first-hand accounts, and then through reality-based short fiction and finally through sheer speculation. It is a memoir and a short story collection and much much more.

“Alan Caldwell’s writing is powerful, honest, and brave. In stories that pull us in and draw us close, he lights up the dark places with clarity and compassion.”
Jennifer Horne, Alabama Poet Laureate 2017-2021, author of Borrowed Light and Tell the World You're a Stories

“Alan Caldwell’s writing is skillful and evocative, demonstrating a keen understanding of storytelling and craft. Through his rich imagery, nuanced characterization, and thoughtful exploration of themes, the prose captivates and resonates with readers, leaving a lasting impression long after the final sentence is read.”
Mea Cohen, Editor in Chief of The Palisades Review

“Alan Caldwell mines deeply into the human experience, laying bare the frailties and failings of our vulnerabilities—then, with a subtle shift, shows it all to be glorious and good. He is a gifted storyteller with a compassionate heart and an eye for detail.”
Patricia Crisafulli, author of the Ohnita Harbor Mystery Series

“I’ve been the Assistant Editor at Southern Gothic Creations for two years and one of the first writers I had the pleasure of editing was Alan Caldwell. Alan is such an unique and edgy writer. Any suggestions I have offered him, he has always taken them graciously. His unique stories are always an interesting view into Alan’s life. His approach into story writing is as unique as Alan.”
Deneen Azzolino, Assistant Editor of Southernhe Gothic Creations

Book Reviewed By Sylvia J.

This book is a collection of short stories. When I say short, I really mean short, each story could take you three minutes to read, and some stories are just one minute in length. The longest story appears to be nine minutes long. Therefore, this book would be appreciated by those that don’t even have much time on their hands. And for those people that have more time on their hands, this book will make those people wanting to read more and more of the stories because of their short length. They are stories that were told to the author. They are stories that he remembers. The first few stories are true stories. Part Two, Three and Four are labeled Somewhat true stories. Part Five is labeled Just stories. There is even a story about a dog in the book. This book will draw you in from the very first page. You might even feel like you know some of the people the author describes in the book, they might seem familiar to you. Their character traits may seem familiar to you as well.

What I really like about this book is that the stories cover so many topics. I would say there is a short story about just about almost anything. Each story is filled with many interesting details. One will not want to put the book down. One will read it late into the evening and will say just one more short story, please!

Half of these short stories were published in journals. My favorite story is the one titled Feisty. This story is about dogs, particularly about one that ran backwards. My second favorite story was titled insulated. It was about a poem about a young girl who would watch the raindrops strike her window pane.

The Epilogue of the book was simply beautiful and will make one teary eyed.

Five stars is my rating.
