Eliza Flemm is back in Rockdale to chase an old life she has been dreaming about since her mother took her away from this place years ago. She is grown now, and raised softly in Society, but her adventurous spirit has always longed for the chaos of the Wild West again. She wants to reconnect with her father, of course, but she also has harbored a secret affection for Garret Shaw—the son of a rancher, and someone who was good down to his very bones back when she knew him as a child. Whatever she remembers of ranch life from her childhood memories, well, nothing is the same anymore. Garret Shaw’s eyes don’t look human, and the snarl in his chest says something terrible has happened to the friend she remembers. He is nothing like the kind boy she used to know, and now he is leading a Pack of people she doesn’t understand. The more she is immersed into this feral shifter world, the more she questions if she should’ve ever come back here at all. But with time comes understanding, and slowly she is building an unbreakable bond to the life, the creatures, and the people here in this Turn of the Century town. She has stumbled right into the middle of a war that has been brewing for decades, and now she will have to get her hands dirty and learn to fight back, or slink back to her cushioned life in Society. All while falling hopelessly in love with a werewolf who seems angry she even exists.Garret Shaw is angry all the time. He’s trying to do his best by his Pack, but a territory war has been building, and the arrival of Eliza destroys the plan he’d put in place for peace. She’s soft and fragile and bleeds easily, and now she is his wife. Why? Not because he chose her. He marries that irritating woman as a favor to a friend and now he’s saddled with the red-haired firecracker for as long as it takes her to run away back to her soft life in Boston. She’s human, and too mouthy for her own good, and that’s a bad combination out in the wilds of Texas where werewolves rule the territory. He’s Alpha here, and has a hundred fires to put out on any given week, and adding a sassy, fragile human to his Pack isn’t something he ever wanted. And to top it off? She’s gorgeous. Of course she is. Her stunning beauty makes it all the more irritating as he tries to keep his distance. And he’s noticing she is working hard and learning her way around his ranch. And now? His wolf is paying attention to her. He can’t afford to get attached to a soft human who will either perish, or run away. He has a territory war to focus on, and a Pack to keep fed, and no one could ever find a more unwilling husband than he…at least that’s what he’s telling himself.Don’t miss this epic Wild West werewolf adventure that will lead you through the perils and triumphs of ranch wars, cattle drives, expanding territory lines, and controlling the beast within. Joyce has said this was her first book, rewritten. I struggled to finish it. I think she should have either completely rewritten this in her current style, or left it alone altogether. I love her other work. This one, not so much.
Unwilling Wolf is a standalone western by TS Joyce and I absolutely loved it❣️Grant you it took me a week to read in-between working but it reminded me of the Wolf Bride series she wrote a few years ago, which I also enjoyed thoroughly🙂 This one is a HUGE book but I loved getting to know Eliza and Garett and their Pack and all the troublesome issues like not having phones, running water or electricity - makes me appreciate what we have today😍
I’m also secretly wishing for a story for Lenny and the others too🤞
I read this one over the week while I exercised and it was perfect for those short bursts of time. The book was slow, so I didn't mind setting it down or picking it up again, not sure that would have been the case had I tried to read it all in one setting.
Garrett was an ass for quite a bit of the book. It really made it hard for me to root for him to be with Eliza or for anything good to happen with him. I hated how it seemed like Eliza was stuck with him, but slowly Eliza worked under his skin and she found the boy she knew back when, even if he was now a grumpy man. Lenny was a delight and I loved how this friendship grew and how both women were so glad for it. I liked the ending, it felt like finally everything was deserved for these 2 and loved how happy everyone else was for them too.
This is a way longer book than I am used to by Ms. Joyce, but it was oh so worth reading! Going back to the old West was wonderful, Reminds me of when I was into reading Historical Romances, but with the Paranormal twist.
Eliza Flemm decides to go back to her childhood home she was wisked away from by her mother as a child. She expects to see her childhood best friend, but is not prepared for the reunion she has with Garret. He is definetely not the sweet boy he used to be, he doesn't even remember her! Well her well laid plans are shot to hell!
Garret Shaw doesn't remember the beauty in front of him, but his wolf seems to take a liking to her. He can't take a chance with a human though, what if she can't handle his secret? She seems to handle herself well although she comes from the city and is used to the easy life.
This must be the longest page count book I've read by this author but what a wonderful slow-burn, Western shifter story. I loved the slice of ranch life aspect but it wasn't at all boring. There was a nice sprinkling of angst throughout the story but I loved Eliza's resilient spirit. Her friendship with Lenny was beautiful and I'm glad they had each other. Overall a really great read.
This is a standalone book. It is a longer book than more of T.S. Joyce’s other books. The is a western shifter book. Eliza Flemm has come back to the only place she considered home. She wants to reconnect to the man she considered her father. Things go very differently than she thought they would. Not longer after arriving her father is involved in an accident and she is married off. Once upon a time she would have loved to be married to who she is married to but he is so different man. They man have the same name but he is basically in an entirely different person. Garrett Shaw wasn’t looking for a wife. He is just trying to stay steady and keep his pack going. Eliza figures out rather quickly what has happened. She doesn’t understand how Garrett doesn’t remember her other things though. Garrett begins to get frustrated as being around Eliza makes him start to remember her and his past. Then there is the fact that the alpha from a larger pack in the area was trying to force him to marry his daughter. Eliza is feeling all out of sorts. She just wanted to be accepted and feel love. Now she feels like she has no place. Eliza is just trying to find a place where she feels like she fits in. Garrett is beginning to realize he was surviving not living. While at first pairing with Eliza was the last thing, he wanted he is realizing it is the best thing to ever happen to him. This book has lots of twists and turns. This was a fantastic read. I would love more books related to these characters. T.S. Joyce is a must-read author for me. I highly recommend all her books.
TS Joyce has done it again-- written a story with characters that tug at your heart. Eliza returns home to the only real father she's ever known. Roy couldn't be happier but their reunion is short lived when he's fatally wounded. Garrett was her best friend when she was young. Their mothers were close but then Garrett's mother dies in childbirth and Eliza's mother takes her and moves back East. Garrett's life becomes a nightmare when his father turns abusive and Eliza's life becomes unbearable with an aunt who hates her. So much has changed in the years she was gone. Garrett is different and there's a dangerous edge to him that wasn't there before. Eliza eventually figures it out. Werewolves exist and Garrett has become one of them. To save Roy's life Garrett turns him against Roy's will. At the point Roy thought he was dying he made Garrett promise to marry Eliza. Garrett keeps his word but the match is less than ideal. When a human is turned the wolf takes over and most of the memories from the previous life are gone. Garrett barely remembers Eliza and doesn't remember the closeness they once shared. Just to add to the story there's another wolf pack hell bent on taking over Garrett's ranch. In fact the son is the one who turned Garrett. The storyline is riveting, the characters are captivating and I couldn't stop reading. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it as an excellent read.
With her mom dead, Eliza Flemm flees Boston as quickly as she can or the only place she was ever happy, Rockdale, Texas. The blasé welcome is unexpected from Roy, the stepfather that loved her even as her mother took them to Boston and Garret Shaw, the neighbor boy who’d held her heart since she was seven! But Garret doesn’t recognize her and though Roy says he’s happy she’s in his house, he makes no secret he’d be happier to see her leave.
Her first full day back in Rockdale, Roy’s gravely wounded and Eliza races to Garret’s neighboring ranch for help. Garret arrives in time to hear Roy’s last request, that he marry Eliza to protect her. When Garret gets back home, he’s got a preacher in tow and grudgingly marries Eliza immediately, a turn neither seems happy about a all.
Eliza doesn’t understand what’s going on around her but it doesn’t take long after a stranger comes to the house when Garret’s away, insisting Garrett’s marrying his sister! When Garret’s back, he seems angry about the fiancee, the brother’s visit and Eliza breathing. Shortly after, the ‘jilted’ fiancée’s dad tries threatens Eliza to leave angering Garret, things escalate until Eliza’s hurt and Garret realizes how much he cares for her.
A different outing for this author. The read is long, set in the time of too much dress, range wars and secret shifters. To my taste the read didn’t start with the expected ‘Joyce voice’ but the more I read the more I enjoyed the page. Rating: 4.5stars
I am a fan of TS Joyce and have read most all of her books. This is a story of struggles, strength, and working towards the promise of a better future. The lead female character has been bullied since her mom passed away in Boston. Now she is of age and wants to find the only father who cared about her. The lead male character was turned against his will but is an Alpha wolf that requires land and an anchor to survive. These two characters meet after many years as adults for a reason but will that be enough? This is a slow burn love story with deep emotions. The actual mating is not until like 75 percent, that I struggled with as it seemed to drawn out unnecessarily. I did not lower the rating. The storyline and plot will draw you in. Read On!
This book is long for a paranormal romance. It's not really enemies to lovers, because these two were childhood friends, but there is a lot of conflict between the characters in the beginning. There is also conflict with a neighboring pack.
So, what does the book do with all those extra pages? Explore the setting? A little, but I didn't get the impression the author did much research into the time period, and I'm not actually quite sure what the time period is, except "1800s". Add dimension to the secondary characters? We get to know Lenny a bit. We do get a lot of backstory for the main characters. But there is a lot of everyday stuff that happens. A lot of fighting and making up.
The ending wasn't super satisfying to me because Eliza missed the final battle and didn't effectively stand up to her aunt.
Gotta admit that when I started reading, I said, "A western? I have read one of those in a years, " but it was you, so I did.
Garrett was insufferable! With his hot cold/ hot cold temperament, it was enough to make a Saint scream! If the phrase "I don't kn" a person, it would be him. Poor thing was so confused.
Mean Lizzie is all alone (with her one friend) just trying to make it. To fit in, be accepted and not be a burden. While trying to prove to her childhood friend, she can make him a good wife.
This couple was different from what we have come to expect. I have a thank that has been the point. BDE:Spice: 🌶🌶
I said what I said! As always: don't take my word for it. Read the book, form your own opinions, and support your authors!
The ending was probably my favorite part of the story. When the two woman ran to each other because they were so happy to be together again it was so touching. When he showed up in Boston, it was such a great gift to her. The love her uncle had for her was priceless and the same love her "dad" had for her stood the test of time and wolves. I didn't care for the violence but that's my thing and I understood the purpose in the story. I loved how much she grew and learned with the help of everyone. Without her willingness to want to make the best of her situation she would have been miserable. She was a tough, smart, friendly and loving lady! Her aunt is on fire right where she belongs for being so mean for no good reason.
There were so many good things about this story, from the depth and strength of the characters and their growth and development to many of the historical aspects of life during that time with a shifter twist. Editing was a problem for me. The first major problem in the storyline came when Eliza joined the pack as they watched over the herd. I couldn’t make sense of who told who to watch over Eliza because the description was unclear. Later in the story, references kept being made about Clint as Garrett’s Maker when it was Wyatt who was his Maker. Other minor editing errors throughout the story were distracting but I still enjoyed the intent of the storyline.
I didn't enjoy Garrett's behaviour and treatment of Eliza. Even with the explanation that it was because of his wolf. He was a huge jerk to her and kept making assumptions about her.
He would hurt her with his words and refuse to apologize. He was definitely one of my least favorite male lead's.
I didn't like how Eliza let herself be manipulated by her aunt by the end of the book. I thought she could do more to stand up to her, but she was strangely passive. I wish she had it in her to reject her aunt and leave Boston. I was disappointed that Garret had to come for her and rescue her.

I read the original book and loved it but OMG this was seriously so good. It was rough from the start. A few times I felt like I just needed a break because I really wanted to smack that man. But slowly he changed and she started understanding him better. There were times I laughed so hard and times I cried a little. Their story was a rough and painful and a huge roller coaster of emotions that ended so beautifully. Now I want happiness for the rest of the pack!
Guess I don’t get the feisty independent woman in Texas then see her in Boston as a doormat to her Aunt…go on about your life the old bat ain’t long for this world…she does not have years to control you…so I did not see that part of the story was necessary I would have like to read about her transition than the dying aunt..and the excuses of why she treated a child poorly was lame…why not treat the sister who got pregnant out of wedlock bad..also I thought story was long winded in parts…started skipping pages to get to dialogue.
I am a huge fan of this author and I did enjoy this book but it felt different not her normal style of humour. This is a one book but it is over 500 pages.I did have questions in this book that never got answered. Also very original and tragic how you lose your memory that's a different twist.I would of liked to see her change? This is in a time before phones tv and cars love it. I would of liked a series but sadly there was only 4 more in this pack and two got together on plus roy.I guess more could of come and he could become sheriff
Another amazing tale from T.S. Joyce. I anxiously await new books from this author. The stories and characters are always woven together so artfully that the reader is drawn into that world, and doesn’t want to leave. At least I do not. The books Joyce writes stay with this reader far longer than other series, and to me, that is the mark of a truly outstanding author.
TS Joyce tends to follow the same formula for most of her books, and it works. Her books have become such comfort reads for me, especially when nothing else is sticking. I swear I’ve DNF’d a half dozen books this week, but as soon as I got the email from Amazon about this book, I knew my slump would be over.
As to this book in particular, I really enjoyed the western theme of it. I have a group of TS’s books that are my favorites, and this one will be joining them.
This book had me fully engaged from the first page. T.S. Joyce has demonstrated her talent in crafting a story that makes you lose yourself in the characters and storyline. The upheavals in Eliza's life drive her to seek her father. Then she has so little time and is driven to marry her childhood friend, Garret who is drastically changed. So many strange things go on around her and yet with inner conviction and strength she meets each challenge.
This is probably longer than many of this author's books, however it it no less engaging. Set way back in the times of the wild west, we find our MCs thrown back together in such a way they have to try to remember the people/children they were before each of their lives changed dramatically. Loved this, great worldbuilding and strong loveable characters. I hope we will get to spend more time with the rest of the characters in this cast.
Holy moly! The longest book by T and every page was awesome! This story made me enjoy a “historical western” again! It was filled with angst, action, funny and sad moments as well as enough heat to make you sweat! The slow burn of both the steamy times as well as the love story was perfect!
T knows how to make you relish every word, every humorous moment as well as take those learning moments and truly be in the characters shoes!
I’m at a loss for words. This is, by far, an exceptional, wonderful novel. It’s difficult to summarize the fine points since all of it is so well done.
The building relationship between Eliza and Garret, the personalities of the pack, the early American setting, the ebb and flow of the plot….just all well done.
Thank you, T.S. Joyce for bringing us delightful reading pleasure.
I have read almost all of TS Joyce books and the only complaint I have ever had was the fact that they weren’t long enough! But this book right here was absolutely amazing. It was the perfect length and the characters were just perfect. I loved the storyline and setting it back in the old west was so fun and refresh. It breaks my heart a little bit that it is a standalone because I would love to see the whole pack find love but from the parts we saw from them I absolutely loved it!
This was surprisingly long and solid. I had very few complaints about frustrating inaccuracies, for example the fact that you can't ride a horse in a normal astride position with a skirt on no matter how wide the skirt is. This is why they invented sidesaddles. And riding sidesaddle sucks because you can't grip the horse with your legs. Seriously though, try to skip past those with minimal brain twisting and it's a great western story.

I was introduced to the Shifter World by this author, my first series was "Bear Valley "the first book in that series was " The Witness and the Bear " after reading that first book I was Hooked. That was over 10yrs ago I was so captivated and mind blown until I had no word's, and now this one has captured me just the same. So the only word's I can say is "Well Done Author Well Done"!!!!!
I like cowboys and I like werewolves, so I thought I’d like this. Alas, it’s the historical that got me. It’s almost a stuffy old classic, but with random modern things thrown in. (Like challenging someone to a fight “Want to go?”. Yep, sure that’s what they would have said.) It’s pretty slow and I never felt the draw between the characters. I guess if you like her Wolf Brides series you’d likely enjoy this, but it wasn’t for me.
I have to say this is my 2nd book I've read by T.S. Joyce & she is an amazing writer. This book was soooo good. The funny parts reminded me a little of John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara. I laughed so hard at Eliza's spunkiness. I was pulled into this story & read it in 2 days. I can't wait to read the next one by her. I've read over 900 books in the last 4 years & she has just become one of my fav authors.
