"How he got started in comics: In 1983, when Fraction was 7 years old and growing up in Kansas City, Mo., he became fascinated by the U.S. invasion of Grenada and created his own newspaper to explain the event. "I've always been story-driven, telling stories with pictures and words," he said.

Education and first job: Fraction never graduated from college. He stopped half a semester short of an art degree at Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri in 1998 to take a job as a Web designer and managing editor of a magazine about Internet culture.

"My mother was not happy about that," he said.

But that gig led Fraction and his co-workers to split off and launch MK12, a boutique graphic design and production firm in Kansas City that created the opening credits for the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace."

Big break: While writing and directing live-action shoots at MK12, Fraction spent his spare time writing comics and pitching his books each year to publishers at Comic-Con. Two books sold: "The Last of the Independents," published in 2003 by AiT/Planet Lar, and "Casanova," published in 2006 by Image Comics.

Fraction traveled extensively on commercial shoots. Then his wife got pregnant. So Fraction did what any rational man in his position would do -- he quit his job at MK12 to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time comic book writer.

Say what? "It was terrifying," said Fraction, who now lives in Portland, Ore. "I was married. We had a house. We had a baby coming. And I just quit my job."

Marvel hired Fraction in June 2006, thanks largely to the success of his other two comics. "I got very lucky," he half-joked. "If it hadn't worked out, I would have had to move back in with my parents.

Adventureman, a throwback to the pulp heroes of the 30s and 40s (mainly Doc Savage)-- had many adventures back in the day, but his final tale left off on a massive cliffhanger, with him crawling away at gunpoint, seemingly meeting his end.

In the present day, a collector of old books receives a mysterious hardcover on the life of Adventureman, and things begin to unfold as she learns Adventureman may be real indeed...

I'm looking forward to more of these. Even as a fan of the classic pulps, I will say that it can be a bit hard to follow at times. And something also felt like it was missing from this story. It was not a bad start to the series, but I was expecting a little more. The art was fantastic, however!

Terrific art. Muddled confusing story. Maybe I tried to read it too fast… trying to give it the benefit of the doubt. I’ll check out the next two volumes and see if it all starts to make more sense to me.

This was a very fun story. It took a while to follow what was going on, and even by the end, I was still a bit confused, but things came together nicely.
I like Dodson's art (previously all I knew of was his cover work), but a whole book was a lot to take in. He draws his women very well, but the faces of some of his males are a bit lackluster. All said, though, this is a great piece, and fits well with his 'burlesque' styles.
Fraction did a decent job of world creation.
An interesting read, not sure if I'd recommend it, but I enjoyed it.

A new collection of the series from 2020, this time collecting the first 5 instead of the first 4 issues and it does work better because of it. Adventureman was a Doc Savage type, a pulp hero. Then something happened and he and all of his colleagues were forgotten. Until now. Now Claire and her son are realizing it was all real. The Dodsons make this book look absolutely gorgeous.

Beautiful art and an interesting premise. A great start to a potentially great series.
