Continuing the stories of the people - both Upstairs and Downstairs - who live and work at Walcott Manor, A Gothick Romance sees John, eldest son of Sir John and Lady Alicia Courtney, just down from Oxford and off to London for his first taste of town life, followed at a discreet distance by his independently-minded younger sister Margaret, her outspoken Cockney maid Poppy and her faded governess Miss Lacey, who carries a small wooden mouse in her pocket... John is not the type of young man to worry his parents by gambling the family fortune away in hells, or taking up with a wild set - he is more interested in the latest advances in Science. However when he meets the beautiful and romantic Manon Guegenot, of a family of French modistes, his mother becomes extremely worried and orders her husband to go and put a stop to the affair. A witty and romantic romp through the salons and mantua-makers of Georgian London, with excursions to St.Paul's Cathedral, Limehouse and the Cape of Good Hope.
An enjoyable and entertaining read - as are all Ms Boleyn’s books. Interesting characters, that I’m hoping will appear in other stories - Margaret and Lord Vincent, for eg.
