"I am your Fairy Godmother, and all is well," this glorious vision told me. "I have breathed life into you, and now I shall care for and watch over you."
Child's Play Toy Store lay home to a magical story, where a small, toy panda bear was granted life by his Fairy Godmother. Next morning, Panda makes friends with a magnificent looking rocking horse, called Rocky.
One day, a well-dressed lady and her daughter bought Rocky. Panda felt sad gazing at the space Rocky once occupied. Shortly afterwards, a kind, grey-haired lady bought Panda for her granddaughter. At the family home, Panda became known as Percy Panda. Join Percy Panda in his many exciting adventures.
Many years later, Percy Panda began to look shabby. Without warning, he was thrown into a black bag, and left out for the rubbish. What will now become of Percy Panda, and would he ever return home again?
"Oh, Percy Panda and Rocky, do keep up! Don't you recognise meee? Joy was such a darling, wasn't sheee? Do anything for anyone. No job too big or too small, but I guess she's served her purpose now. She was my best disguise yet. Ohhh! Now come along, my loveliiieees! Time to take a stroll in these deep, dark woods, we're almost there."
The characters in this story are semi-developed, which means they possess certain traits that make them likeable and interesting in various ways. However, they ultimately lack the complete depth that would enable readers to form a strong emotional connection and truly understand their motivations and backgrounds. While the characters possess some charm, they do not fully come alive on the page, leaving readers wanting more insight into their thoughts and feelings. This lack of comprehensive character development may prevent readers from fully investing in their journeys and experiences throughout the narrative.
The settings, on the other hand, are quite realistic and vividly described, allowing readers to easily imagine the world in which the story unfolds. The author does a commendable job of painting a picture of the environments, making them feel tangible and relatable. This attention to detail in setting helps to ground the story, even when other elements may falter. Readers can easily visualize the scenes, which enhances their overall experience and immersion in the tale.
As for the writing style, it is straightforward and accessible, which can be appealing, especially for younger audiences. However, there are moments when the prose can become confusing, and certain passages feel somewhat unrealistic. These instances may disrupt the flow of the narrative and lead to moments of disconnection for the reader. Despite these occasional hurdles, the writing remains readable and can still be enjoyed by young readers who are likely to appreciate the adventure and whimsy of the story.
The plot itself is intriguing and holds promise; however, it often feels so fast-paced that important details and character development are sacrificed. The rapid progression from one event to the next can leave readers feeling disoriented, as they struggle to keep up with what is happening and why these events matter to the characters involved. This hurried pace can hinder the overall impact of the story, making it challenging for readers to fully grasp the significance of certain plot points.
Additionally, there are moments in the narrative where the decisions and actions of the human characters come across as questionable in terms of realism. These choices may seem implausible or out of character, which could detract from the believability of the story. Nevertheless, this aspect may not be as crucial for younger readers, who are often more forgiving of such inconsistencies as they focus on the enjoyment of the adventure and the whimsical elements of the tale.
There is a wealth of potential within the story's premise, plot, and characters that could elevate it to a wonderful four or five-star read. To achieve this, the author could consider expanding the book's length and incorporating additional details and chapters that delve into Percy Panda's life before he is purchased from the toy shop. Exploring his experiences and adventures with Laura in greater depth would enrich the narrative and allow for more meaningful character development. Furthermore, ensuring that plot twists are well-integrated and do not feel abrupt or disconnected from the overall story would greatly enhance the reading experience. This would help maintain coherence and keep readers engaged throughout the unfolding events.
In conclusion, "Percy Panda" by Anthony Gapper is a pleasant, quick read that appeals to young readers who are captivated by themes of magic, adventure, and the enchanting idea of a stuffed animal coming to life. The story offers a delightful exploration of friendship and imagination, making it a charming choice for those who enjoy light-hearted tales. With some thoughtful revisions and expansions, it has the potential to become a truly memorable story that resonates with its audience on a deeper level.

Must read 🏆 A story of fear, fun, magic, and lots of adventures as a toy panda finds himself suddenly brought to life SYNOPSIS "I am your Fairy Godmother, and all is well," this glorious vision told me. The story of Percy Panda begins in Child’s Play Toy Store. There is kept a stuffed toy panda, much like any other, until one day, a fairy godmother descends and brings him to life. However, she warns him to be careful and not to reveal his life and ability to speak to just anyone. Panda soon finds one other toy alive, “a second-hand but loveable rocking horse” named Rocky, and they quickly become fast friends. They are purchased by different families, and Percy finds himself on a multitude of adventures under the care of a girl named Laura. Between getting lost at school, finding himself in a washing machine, and a complicated relationship with the family cat, Ginger, Percy is in for many shenanigans both strange and perilous.
Percy is a simple but engaging protagonist. He is curious and loyal but often timid. Several times, his curiosity does get the better of him. However, the driving aspect of his character is in his relationships with Rocky, Laura, and his Fairy Godmother. The emphasis on friendship grounds an otherwise whimsical story about a toy panda who was brought to life.
The magic system was fascinating. It plays on the usual tropes of a Fairy Godmother, descending to deliver blessings to people and protect them. It distinguishes itself from most fairy-tales in that most of the adventures themselves are commonplace, and it is primarily the main character who is strange and magical.
The plot was engaging. It starts out episodic with one adventure after another, but it does not shy away from letting its main character suffer. In each adventure, the situation becomes more and more dire. All the while, Percy, in spite of his faults, must hold on to his loyalties and his friendships, as well as trust in what his Fairy Godmother told him when he first came to exist.
The story is short, fun, and exciting, and it is sure to make an excellent read aloud for kids. Percy the Panda is a fun-loving character that any child would love to have as their very own. Can you imagine your favorite lovey having the magical ability to communicate with you? The author does a great job at writing simplistic dialogue and easy-to-understand situations children would enjoy. However, the story itself jumps abruptly at times and lacks the plot and character development to create a flowing storyline. To be honest, I felt like it was a bunch of short stories about adventures Percy goes on rather than a continual story of his life. Overall, I think it has potential and younger readers will not care about the lack of character depth but will ultimately enjoy Percy’s adventures.
This is one of those rare children's books that adults will love just as much as kids do. The parts I appreciated the most: the friendship between Percy and Rocky, the emotional depth of the story (Percy experiences real loss and abandonment), and the message about belonging. Through an engaging story, this middle-grade novel teaches important life lessons and emotional growth. I couldn't help but compare this to the books I grew up on, like The Velveteen Rabbit. That will always be a classic, but I'm also happy to have a new book to recommend to current middle graders. Like Velveteen, this story will be remembered for years to come. Percy Panda is a gem!
