I am Steph Calvert, and the thing that most people pick up on is that I am transgendered. That doesn't make me special, but it does influence my writing. I will be blunt: I write love stories. I don't mean fluffy bodice-rippers involving a lot of smouldering, but stories set in the real world, or at least as real as I can make it. Warts and all, but infused throughout with Pandora's gift. How could anyone live without hope? Most of my stories are tied together with one brutal event, and while I have not written the details, and will not, it is the effects on other people that generate the tales. I make no apologies for the brutality in some of the scenes, just as I make no excuses for the bits where True Love...well, you know the schema.
Once again, Ms Calvert brings us more "Tales of the Sussex Border".
This is a compendium of 6 Short Stories; ony two of which are set on the "Border".
Ms Calvert writes "Real Life" superbly; and as such there is a warning implicit in that.
There are Dark Places here.
Again, do not let that put you off reading any of her works;
This is a much shorter book than her previous "Something to Declare" and the Title story of this compendium, "Uniforms", introduces "Melanie"; who first appeared towards the end of "Something.."; and is the Character who is, in my opinion, central to all of the "Border" tales.
"Melanie", is, by the Authors own admission, probably her favourite character; as will become clear as "Melanies" story unfolds; and as you immerse yourself in the "Border" this will become more apparent.
Those of you who have already read "Something.." and its companion Tales (all coming soon to Kindle) will understand what I mean and I do not wish to give any spoilers so do yourself a favour and buy them all.
This in no way detracts from any of the other central characters who will introduce themselves to you as the Series unfolds.
Also introduced here, in a supporting role, is Stewart "Stewie" McDuff who also appeared in "Something.."
"Jerry"; who appears at the same time in "Something.." is brought to life here in "Home Match"
The other 4 "non-Border" stories in this compendium are also excellent; each in their own way.
"Sunlight and Shade " is a "simple" love story; and for this alone; it is worth buying this book.
"Moving On". People don't stop dreaming; no matter how old they are.
"Dark Night of the Soul". Two people meet one dark and miserable night and their lives are profoundly changed.
"Hard Memory". This is a Horror Story; whose characters are all deeply unsympathetic; but who are superbly written by Ms Calvert.
