Japan has been invaded by gods—and they’ve left nothing but death and destruction in their wake. With entire cities now classified as uninhabitable danger zones, Anti-God researcher Sachiyuki Tokinaga is determined to find a way to take down the gods and save humanity. When chance leads him to high schooler Waka Kamikura, the two may just end up changing the fate of the world forever.

Tokinaga has successfully negotiated a treaty between humanity and the snake god, but the danger isn’t over yet. Waka’s been taken by a god named Volov, who claims to be a former friend of the snake god. Could Waka’s friend Shion have something to do with why the two gods turned against each other?

EN I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this is one of those manga that, while not extraordinary, still manages to keep me interested with every new volume, thanks to its engaging story and the mystery surrounding the deities.

So it’s definitely a series worth continuing to follow.

With art that continues to be both beautiful and horrifying, and a full cast of characters with their own motivations, this chaotic and unique series is one I always look forward to.

The story so far
Gods have descended upon Tokyo, reducing the entire city to an uninhabitable danger zone. When a young girl by the name of Waka peers through the fence surrounding the zone, she is approached by a wary researcher named Tokinaga. Waka claims that she's come all the way from Saga in order to find her friend. Soon after, Waka is attacked by a snake god and kidnapped, leading her to the horrifying realization that there is a god living within her.

Meanwhile, the physician Yoriko has been abducted by Obikawa, a man she's just discovered is actually the snake god Orokopi. But just days later, the snake god is wounded in a confrontation with the god Ahf-Azu. Now outcast and alone, what will the snake god decide when Tokinaga suddenly proposes a treaty with all of humanity...?

I originally purchased this series on a bit of a whim but have yet to be fully convinced. Currently I am only picking up additional volumes if I can't get three volumes of other series I am reading whilst taking advantage of the Forbidden Planet 3-for-2 offer.

The premise is simple, Gods have appeared and are blighting the World. They have the ability to kill with a single glance and areas they have 'infected' are quarantined off for everyone's safety. The gods have congregated in Japan, causing much concern leading to the construction of a specific research team.

The Anti-God research Institute is desperately trying to find a defence against the invaders whilst tackling a few nearby Gods, including the recently escaped Snake God.

It is frantic and occasionally disjointed and I am still not fully convinced. There have been a few new reveals which make the actions of the Gods seem more reasonable, adding enough intrigue for me to keep going for now. This volume gets 4 stars.

*IPO: the official name for gods. Short for Idolatry Prohibited Organism.

The problem with After God is that sometimes it’s stupid is annoying (basically any moment with the cats) and sometimes it’s stupid is the best part (childlike Gods). Vol 5 introduces the drug bunny. The drug bunny is the best ever, except for its design. The way it acts is amazing, another childish god, but this one wants the good drugs, and the world it created is amazing to look at. I like to see the lore and backstories expanding here too. Makes up for the boring technical political stuff going on in the background.

Spoilers

I believe some readers are not understanding what the author is writing about. The sentient gummies is unhinged but also not taking away from the plot. The story unraveling between Alura and Obikawa and the Gods is rather interesting. Obikawa being a god learning what it’s like to have human emotions and friends while Alura seems to be only using people for her own intentions. Also gods having drug addictions is peak.

I wasn’t expecting “body-snatching sentient candy” to be something I ever had to read about let alone type, but here we go.

The Snake God has agreed to help humanity because he’s been corrupted by merging with and hanging around too many humans, so none of the other gods want to be his friend anymore.

But among all of this… we get so much lore, on the gods, on Alura, on what really happened to Shion… on why they’re in Japan…

They finally figured out the humor by the end of volume 4 and now things are coming together. Still, it's still lacking that *holy shit* aspect of it's peers and does a little too much telling instead of showing. 4.5

I love how we got to know more about the gods and why they are in Japan. Alura is a crazy cool character, I hope we get to know her better the next few volumes. We also need more Tokinaga appearances. I know, I know, he's the MC and in every thinkable panel, but I NEED more. This might be my all time favorite character. Now we just gotta find out why he is psychotic lmao
