Blooming in Death is a dark Victorian era adult romance. This book is not recommended for people under the age of 18. Please check the warnings before reading.
I was really excited for this book but unfortunately it just fell a bit flat for me. For the last ~100 pages I felt rather confused by some plot lines and the love bond and romance just didn’t seem natural or compelling. The story felt vaguely sketched out (especially at the end) and would have benefited from stronger structuring. Props for being a new indie novel but it just wasn’t for me.
Our FMC, Vespera, is resigned to her fate of only seeing in black and white due to a family curse. The only cure is ostensibly finding your soulmate, which she is adamantly avoiding and choosing to live out her days as a spinster. Though after being violently attacked in her home, she sets out to solve who attacked her, with the nagging feeling they are linked to other tragedies in her family. All while navigating the attention of an unwanted but friendly suitor, and her mysterious bodyguard.
You’ll enjoy this if you like: >Haunted manors >Quirky best friends >Tall, dark and handsome MMC >Grade A banter and tension >Unexpected twists
Not only was I lucky enough to be a beta reader for this amazing book, I also managed to get my grubby lil hands on an ARC. As a writer myself, I love seeing the progress of books, how different the final version can be from the editing stage. I loved this book in its draft stage and can now confirm that yes, it’s even more amazing as the final version.
Let’s get into it, so Vespera is a stoic, sarcastic FMC who is perfectly happy living her life cursed to see only in black & white until she is violently attacked in her own home, resulting in her grandmother hiring a sexy, tall, dark & handsome bodyguard for her (oh, how will Vespera handle having such a man following her around? Poor dear!)
As the story unravels, you learn about Vespera’s family curse, the strange circumstances of her mother’s death, the murder mystery surrounding who exactly attacked her and why does it seem to be a personal vendetta and not just a random attack? From start to finish, this book had me hooked.
Things I absolutely loved; 🥀The haunted manor vibes 🥀Vespera being able to see ghosts 🥀The constant banter between Maaier & Vespera. Sometimes enemies to lovers have like one good banter scene and then it dies off, but this book kept the banter up throughout and I loved it 🥀The serial killer plotline (reminded me a lot of Jack the Ripper) 🥀That plot twist!!! IYKYK 🥀The side-characters have their own interesting stories and depth, I especially loved Dorian as she is an absolute menace, she is also super witchy and it’s such a vibe 🥀The yearning, all-consuming love Maaier has for Vespera 🥀 The wholesome cosy ending, I’m so sick of cliffhangers!
What a beautiful book! I really enjoyed Jasmine's writing style, and felt like I should have read it curled up by a fire in a Victorian mansion... There are a few twists that I didn't see coming and a little bit of mystery as well. This was my very first dip into paranormal romance and I absolutely loved it! A really lovely read - can't wait for more
I can’t really understand why the rating for this book is so high. The plot is interesting at first, especially on who was the culprit. However, it got predictable and boring towards the later part and I’m left with 20 more pages to finish.
This is one of those books I never thought I'd read, but I'm so glad I got the opportunity to arc read this because it is AMAZING!! I absolutely am in love with this read. Unfortunately, due to life getting in the way, I'm yet to finnish, but I will update the review when I'm done :) but so far (50%) I'm obsessed
Update. I have just finnished this read and without giving anything away, the ending had me sobbing. I have never cried over a book before but this got me and it got me good. Well done Jasmine. This story was truly amazing. I loved all the twists and turns and felt really connected to so many of the characters
Wow. This book was easily a 5 star read for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the dark Victorian elements of this book and craved so much of the suspense that was in it! It had me on edge wanting more from the 80th page! I thought the elements in this book were quite unique. Especially with the FMC finding her colour with her soulmate. To have her life be in darkness until she’s to find the one. The ending has me NEEDING more!
Jasmine has such a beautiful writing style that is enjoyable, fast paced and poetic.
This book could have used an editor, a grammar and a spell check. If you’re looking for a tale with rich descriptions and chemistry between the main leads look elsewhere. Everything is very vaguely sketched out and the love bond seems to come from nothing except manipulation.
I'm so happy I finally got to read Blooming in Death by Jasmine Styles. I have been following her whole process of the book on Instagram, and as soon as it was available, I immediately downloaded it on Kindle!
I enjoyed the book overall and would recommend it to read. However, I need to read it again and potentially annotate it later. I believe that I didn't get as immersed in the book as I wanted to on my first read-through. The first half of the book had me so sucked into the story, the writing style that Jasmine uses was a nice change of pace, and flowed together nicely.
The characters were all interesting and grabbed my attention. I think my favorites were Vespera and Dorian. They both were so unique, each in their own way, and had me hooked from the moment we were introduced to them. The mystery aspect of the book I loved, the curse, the family history, and the murders were intriguing and had me guessing the whole time.
The second half of the book was where I struggled a little bit. Once our FMC Vespera and our MMC Maaier got deeper into their relationship, the book took a turn for me. The relationship between Vespera and Maaier was nice. I liked their banter and the tension between them, although when it came to the more spicy scenes, I felt like it was lacking a little. However, once they were together, and the tension started to dissipate a bit, the chemistry between them seemed lacking or not as noticeable to me. The last three chapters felt a little disjointed to me, like it was a tad rushed, and you had a bunch of information thrown at you all together.
As I said before, I want to re-read this book and take my time annotating it. Sometimes, with some books, you just need to read them again. I did enjoy this book a lot and would recommend it to others to read. I can't wait to read the second book when it comes out!

What a unique story, I've never read anything like it and didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did because I'm not a fan of historical books but am glad I still read this as it has my fave the paranormal vibes with it. Maaier😍😍😍😍😍 loved Victor too and am excited for other book in series and who it will be about. I've always loved the name Vesper but never heard Vespera before so loved that the main characters name was that. Also she was very different from any of the women from that time period which made this even more interesting to read and enjoy. This truly was a gothic paranormal book with some romance which I always want more romance and would have loved his POV sooo much. The slow burn was a bit slower than I'd like as usual but adored them and their story it was beautiful and so happy they got their happily ever after. There is violence in this like mentioned before you start the book so beware.
I really loved the story. The vibes, gothic and Victorian.. perfectly on top.
This story revolves around the Vespera, FMC. The point I love is she only see grey colors until she met her soul mates. All women in her family are blanketed by this curse.
Maaier, MMC was amazing.. I really loved his bantering session with Vespera. The sexual tension between them was so alluring and the way spice scenes were written it was good.
The serial killer vibes were good and the twists were written in a good manner. The side characters and the story line was good.
I bought this book on a whim during one of Amazon's major book sales and I enjoy supporting indie authors. I liked the cover, which is gorgeous, and the story concept was intriguing. Our FMC is a likeable character. The MMC was just meh and sadly disappointing. I liked their chemistry and spice was good but their fated bond and how they met didn't make sense to me. The story (at least for me) dragged and I felt there were many plot holes and it took me a while to finish this book because, life, and I almost decided to DNF. BUTTTT I'm no quitter so I'm proud to have finished it. but the ending and cliffhanger left me with more questions than answers so hopefully the second book can answer them for me. This book had potential so hopefully I enjoy the next one more. And maybe with dual POV which I love.
This magnificent literary work introduces Vespera Florian, the female protagonist, who resides with her grandmother in Florian Manor. The townspeople whisper about the manor being haunted. Vespera and the women in her family are afflicted by a peculiar curse that prevents them from perceiving colors until they encounter their true loves. Consequently, Vespera's world is devoid of vibrant hues, existing only in shades of gray. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes the target of a perilous attack. The identity of the assailant or the nature of the threat remains a mystery, enticing readers to delve into this captivating tale.
Jasmine, the author, has crafted an extraordinary masterpiece that is both poetic and aesthetically pleasing. The Book was so captivating that I found myself reluctant to reach the end. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been an ARC reader for this exceptional work.
"Blooming in Death" will be available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited on September 22nd. I wholeheartedly recommend this remarkable literary creation. 😍😘🖤🥀
I perservered with this book despite the grammatical errors and strange sentence structure simply because the story interested me. With some editing help this could have been a really good book. Had a great twist that i should have but didn't, see coming.
As I'm witing this, I have only just finished the book and the way my heart hurts after reading Vespera's journey.
The whole cast of characters are well written and add to the story rather than detract. Dorian and Victor just made me entirely happy.
I love the way Jasmine has taken what lore we know of the Grim Reaper and given us a completely new mythology to delve in to.
I didn't see that plot twist coming and I may have messaged a few people in all caps about.
Anyway, if you like historical fiction, enjoy tales of the grim reaper and love a little heartache, Blooming in Death is definitely a book you wanna read.
Blooming in Death is a beautifully poetic dark gothic romance. This story had me hooked from the very beginning and was read basically in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down!
The FMC Vespera is cursed to only see in shades of grey until she finds her soul mate. This story is filled with loss and love and is written so beautifully that it will be pulling all sorts of emotions from you while reading.
The banter between Vespera and the MMC Maaier is perfect, and I love how sassy and sarcastic Vespera is.
The twists, turns and the mystery that runs along the whole plot just sucks you in and makes you want to keep turning those pages!
The all consuming love in this book between the main characters just melts my heart.
Jasmine has done such a fantastic job creating this story and I cannot wait to see what else comes from this amazing mind!
I've been so excited to finally get to read Blooming In Death, I loved the old Gothic vibe, it's something I don't dip into regularly but this book makes me remember why I enjoy it so much.
The main characters are all so different and fun to read about, I particularly loved Dorian and I would love to know more about her backstory.
I would have liked to have more of an intense maybe slower build up between the love Interests but that's just personal preference 🤷🏼♀️
This story had twists, turns and also so much suspense.
I think this was such an incredible debut novel and I'm excited to read more by Jasmine 🖤
Blooming in Death is a total 5-star gem that had me hooked from the first page. I love all things ~Victorian and the fact that this as major Victorian vibes - loved!!! It follows Lady Vaspera, who sees everything in black and white—literally! This quirky twist serves as a powerful metaphor for her emotional journey as she navigates love and a family curse that traps visitors in her gloomy manor.
The story is packed with suspense and mystery, especially with the eerie presence of her protectors. This book has it all! Victorian elements, a family curse, Death themself, soul mates - what is not to love!
Jasmine’s writing is both poetic and fast-paced, making it impossible to put down. The twist is definitely one I didn't see coming! The ending left me craving more, and this book is just perfect for getting into the spooky season.
Immediately 5star read! Top read of 2024 I had the amazing opportunity to beta read this book and I was not disappointed one bit! This book had me hooked within the first 3 chapters! The story was so unique and captivating. Jasmine’s writing style is incredible while also being easy to read. Vespera’s curse of seeing the world in only black and white until she falls in love was written beautifully. If you love Victorian era, gothic vibes with a mix of paranormal/ romantasy and a dash of dark romance. This book is definitely for you!
this was such a uniquely fun read! it’s packed with suspense and the victorian vibes really aid the mystery surrounding Vaspera throughout the story. i loved the descriptions of the clothing/manor, think crimson peak. 🖤🥀
while i knew who the reaper was as soon as he was introduced (it was a little on the nose), it was still fun to watch it play out! (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
also, can i just say i LOVE victor? he might be my favorite tbh, i was just picturing victor van dort the entire time for his character. ՞ ⸝⸝> ̫ <⸝⸝ ՞⸜ ♡ ⸝
