You don't mess with Rosie Gilmour and get away with it.
Crime reporter Rosie Gilmour is back at The Post, bruised and battered from her last investigation but determined to find missing barmaid Wendy Graham.
Convinced that Wendy is the key to an explosive new story, Rosie's search leads her deep into the dangerous world of Glasgow's Ulster Volunteer Force.
This time, Rosie will find herself at the mercy of the most vicious gangsters she's ever encountered.
Another excellent installment in the life of Scottish crime reporter Rosie Glimour.
This time she is investigating Scottish football fans, members of the Ulster Volunteer Force, rape and drug charges - lovely! All set in Glasgow and Spain.
I love these stories because you know exactly what you're going to get. Yes you know she's going to get hurt and yes you know she is going to land everyone in the shit and yes she will get her big scoop hooray!
There are dark elements to the book but it has a formula that doesn't drag you down too low. Rosie is hard but soft in the middle and you can relate to her as a real person...although the stories are pretty far-fetched but that's the beauty of fiction!
Welcome back to Rosie Gilmour, journalist and trouble magnet extraordinaire.
Rosie Gilmour is a Scottish newspaper reporter based in Glasgow and with a few hairy investigations already under belt you know that whatever story she is looking to get her teeth into next its not going to be for the faint hearted.
This time Rosie is looking into a missing barmaid that no one else seems to care about. The story soon develops into something meatier when Rosie discovers that a high ranking member of the UVF is possibly behind her disappearance.
From Eindhoven to Seville and back to Glasgow the roving reporter with her ever present photographer Matt and Bosnian Adrian soon become embroiled in a dangerous undercover investigation that will add to Rosie's ever - recurring nightmare
Well, isn't Rosie Gilmour the cat with nine lives? She just cannot resist getting herself into danger and this book was no different. I am a huge fan of the Rosie Gilmour series after I borrowed Screams in the Dark (book three) from the library about a year ago. I enjoyed the story, the writing and the character of Rosie so much that I immediately bought the other two for my Kindle. Anna is a very talented writer and the stories she tells are very gripping, the one in this book was no different. I was positively euphoric when my NetGalley request was approved!
First things first you always know a book is going to be good when you are hooked just from the Prologue! The book opens and introduces us to UVF members Eddie, Jimmy and Mitch. Straightaway I took a disliking to Eddie, he came across as the sort of person you see in a pub and just know to steer clear of because he's trouble. As the villain of the book he was great in that respect, but a truly despicable character to read about. I wanted him to get his comeuppance all the way through the book. Jimmy and Mitch come across as horrible people but I felt that Jimmy at least had some sort of a conscience. He is just scared of Eddie and the consequences which come with trying to get out of the UVF. The Prologue ends with Jimmy getting a call from his girlfriend Wendy telling him she has been raped by Eddie. When Jimmy turns up at Wendy's flat she has disappeared. Voluntarily or not? And so the story begins, and in comes Rosie to try and find out where she's gone.
Rosie interviews Wendy's friend Liz who is trying to expose Eddie because of his involvement in the drugs business. There's also a bad batch of coke doing the rounds which is killing people and appears to be connected to Eddie. Rosie then goes undercover to Utrecht and Seville in her attempt to gather evidence against Eddie and the UVF with the help of familiar characters from previous books. But of course it's not as simple as that and Rosie runs into a few problems along the way. Rosie is just a fantastic character and quite fearless, she has an abusive background and that plays a big role both in this book and previous ones. After about 50% of this book I was hooked and there was no question of me moving until I reached the end. I especially enjoy books which take characters out of the UK, and the Rosie Gilmour books definitely do that. Rosie's personal life also plays a part in the book, specifically the relationship aspect of it.
There are some scenes in this book which are definitely not for the faint hearted but for me personally the more of that the better! My one negative with this book was that it was too short! Or maybe I just read it too fast? I read it in just two sittings and when I finished it I was gutted and left wanting more. I can't wait for Rosie's next adventure, if the previous books are anything to go by it'll be another thrilling rollercoaster read and I am already counting down the days till its release. Thanks Anna for another fantastic read and thanks to Quercus for the review copy via NetGalley!
This is the first book I've read by Anna Smith and wasn't aware there were 3 other books before this one. Not reading the others didn't ruin this book though as it can be read as as standalone too.
Rosie Gilmour is a woman who doesn't let go when something comes her way. This was about the UVF and drugs and the story went between Scotland and Spain. It was a good read that kept me gripped from the beginning and I will definitely look for more of Anna's books.
Rosie as usual once she gets something between her teeth she isn't letting it go. The tape of a bat maid seems a bit mild for Rosie not the nitty gritty she likes to get to the bottom of. Is football fans all they seem or is there a hidden agenda in these European games.
I have really enjoyed this series so far and was really looking forward to this instalment. Thankfully I was in for a real treat and it took me no time to catch up with the wonderful Rosie Gilmour. This is Anna Smith’s fourth book in the series and it appears she is now at full throttle. We catch up with Rosie after her last investigation (Book 3) and she is now back at work and ready to go. When barmaid Wendy Graham goes missing, Rosie starts to delve into it and as usual finds herself in a situation where she may have to take a few risks. I immediately loved the fact that we get to see Rosie back in her normal day to day job, and her colleagues and friends make appearances once again making you feel you know her that bit better with each book you read.
The subject matter in this latest book delves into matters concerning Glasgow’s UVF and it’s not a pretty picture. I think its times like this, where Anna’s history as a journalist shine through. When Rosie begins to dig deeper into the UVF, she comes across more people involved in both the UVF, and Wendy’s life. Eddie, Jimmy and Mitch are the three main characters within the UVF which catch her attention, and as ever her search for the story takes her into dangerous waters.
The book takes us from Scotland to Spain and once more we get to see the people that help Rosie try to get her story. Matt her work colleague as always goes with her and we also see the return of Adrian. Adrian has appeared in her previous book and I am SO glad that we saw his return in this current one. I just hope that we get to see more of him again? The storyline dragged me in from the beginning and it kept me hooked from start to finish. Rosie is fast becoming a firm favourite of mine and I just cant wait to see what happens to her next. We see a smaller proportion of Rosie’s personal life, but in a strange way….you get to see how she feels about things pretty much all the way through the book.
I can honestly say that this book was a first class read. It has everything I want from a Crime book and more. Great characters, bundles of drama and characters you love to hate. The writing is top notch and I think this is by far her best book to date. I absolutely loved this latest Gilmour book and would suggest if you haven’t read any of them you get started with book one in the series….I sincerely doubt you will regret it!
I received a free copy of this book as a Goodreads Giveaway
This isn't a genre of books that I have read for a while, so this was a nice change for me from some heavier reading of late.
This was my first Anna Smith novel and therefore my first encounter with Rosie. Overall, it proved to be a good read with the plot moving along nicely and interest maintained throughout. It was a little longer than perhaps it could have been but I enjoyed it sufficiently to look out for other of the author's novels.
Much as I love the Rosie Gilmour series I wasn't sure this would grab me with its storyline about the UVF. How wrong I was. Even though I have read the follow on book I was still drawn into the story completely and worrying about the fate of the regular characters. I highly recommend this one and it would work as a standalone book but ideally you should read the series in order.
Betrayed by Anna Smith was a fantastic crime novel. The main character Rosie is smart and keeps the story moving. The plot twists and turns keeps you turning the pages for more.
A very good read.It wasn't exaggeration that Anna Smith style is similar to Martina's Cole books.I think her style is more subtle, but still very good! I recommend!
This is another great novel featuring the dogged reporter Rosie Gilmour and her band of friends and colleagues. As usual the story begins in Glasgow and travels to Spain. It centres around the UVF (the Ulster Volunteer Force) and Glasgow Rangers football supporters of which a small amount are both. The UVF who receive orders from their bosses in Belfast are extremely active in the Glasgow drugs trade and are willing to use any means necessary to protect their chains of supply and demand, including killing. Rosie finds out that the UVF uses football supporters coaches when Rangers play in Europe to bring drugs back to Glasgow. Ever the ballsy reporter Rosie persuades her editor to let her go and track these supporters coaches and see if she can uncover how and when the drugs are obtained. Mixed up in this is a missing girl who was raped by the UVF Glasgow commander, two bodies turn up who had been assassinated paramilitary style and the wife of the UVF commander having any affair. Rosie does whatever it takes to obtain her story. A great read and a notable addition to the Rosie Gilmour series.
This book was… not great. I picked it up hoping for a solid mystery/thriller, something to cleanse my reading palette after a boring read — but honestly, this just felt flat. There’s barely any mystery. Barely any suspense. And absolutely no thrill.
It’s like the book wanted to be a movie — super simple writing, tons of convenient plot points, barely any character development. Everything just kinda happens for the sake of the plot, not because the characters earned it or made it believable. Even the actual mystery in the book is so basic and predictable, I was just waiting for it to end.
Also, the title? Betrayed? Makes it sound like something intense is going on. In reality, it’s like 1% of the story.
Not the worst thing I’ve ever read — there were a few moments here and there — but definitely not something I’d recommend if you’re into real suspense or clever mysteries. Just another basic detective-style story with a forgettable plot.
Anna Smith's experience as a journalist covering major investigations shines throughout her writing on very difficult topics. Betrayed highlights the links between sectarianism and drug smuggling. It also shines a light on all those who are affected by the actions of others, and live in fear for their safety. It is well written, fast paced, and harrowing at times. Once again, I was hooked from page one, as I continue to enjoy the Rosie Gilmour series.
This series gets better and better, sitting on the edge of my seat, thinking hows Rosie going to get through this Truly gripping from the first page . Thank you Anna Smith, I can not recommend this series enough got the next book downloaded ready to go 😊 x
I love e the Rosie Gilmore series of books. I found this one a little slow going to start but once I got into it yet again I hated to put it down. Gripping, detailed and keeps you wanting to know what happens next..
This is my second Rosie Gilmore book and I loved it as much as the first ... gritty and real the characters are believable and strong ... I especially like the way Anna builds the history between the characters through the 2 books ... looking for the next instalment in rosies life now x
Anna Smith has finally got the hang of writing a well constructed plot. It feels like a completely different author compared to her earlier scribbles. I won’t go into detail but I’ll be extra careful when I go into the kitchen and put the finishing touch to my butterscotch crème brûlée.
