-Hold on to your penny- Review of Fraudster Tales- History’s greatest financial criminals and their catastrophic crimes by @vijaynarayangovind 🖋️📖
With your bank in your hand and money not more than just an idea floating around us, the significance of Fraudster Tales lies in the fact that it goes back to the very root of such crimes.
Govind writes that Edwin Sutherland, a pioneering American criminologist is recognized as the father of white-collar crimes. But when he had first introduced this idea that ‘white-collar crime may be defined approximately as a crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation’ , it was frowned upon and not accepted widely. This was seen as a controversial affront to the upper classes and summarily rejected. Now with such crimes happening left right and centre, people know better.
Govind chases down the white collar criminals across the globe. Right from England to China and even our humble post-independent India. Govind accepts that he has taken a creative licence in some places but mostly these accounts are true.
One of the most interesting stories is the one that begins the book. Describing the daring exploits of a certain William Chaloner, this is a worthy initiator to a long queue of the coming fraudsters. This is seventeenth century England. Paper currency notes haven’t been introduced yet (experts making a sour face at such an idea) and silver pennies are all the rage. These pennies, however, on account of having a smooth edge, fall prey to the fraudsters who peel away at the sides, accumulating the silver shavings. The story goes into top gear with the appearance of a very prominent scientist appointed as a warden of the royal mint. Who is that? Why don’t you read and find out?
Another story features Haridas Mundhra who conned a prominent financial institution as well as the then finance minister is worth mentioning too.
Hold on to your seatbelts. History has never been so interesting.
The "Fraudster Tales” by "Vijay Narayan Govind" skillfully narrates how white collar crimes are committed offering research information and details on ten reported crimes that have greatly affected the Indian and world economy. Telling a vivid and suspenseful story that started from ancient times and goes up to the contemporary period, he exposes the thrilling and often shocking deeds of people from the shady world of finance and tells the reader the kind of havoc greed can do.
The book starts with the infamous Greek fraudster Hegestratos from 300 BC, and culminating with modern day con artists like Ken Lay of the infamous Enron and Charles Ponzi the man behind the ponzi scheme. His specification of these financial crimes is elaborate, seamlessly linking them to the historical and the socio-economic backgrounds conducive for the offenses. Every story is a suspenseful murder, revealing the fate and actions of these crafty people who were able to deceive the mechanics of their epochs. Perhaps the biggest asset of the book is that it clearly explains complicated financial strategies even to an audience that may have little background knowledge on the subject.
The author writes in a plain and simple language that does not burden the audience with inflow of technicalities, thereby making the various complex webs of deceit easy to understand and follow. This is well accomplished as the book shows early beginnings of each scam and intersperses it with facts and fables making the read a rather engaging one.
In conclusion, it is a informative and engaging exploration of the history of fraud. The vivid descriptions and profound analyses make this book essential for every reader who wants to explore the intricate connections between people’s inner evil and their social environment. Regardless of whether the reader is passionate about finance or is more drawn to true crime stories, this book will provide them with a stimulating and engaging account of the most notorious financial villains who perpetrated some of history’s most massive frauds.

The book shares the stories of 10 such crimes that happened in history and will blow your mind. Every story is notorious than the other, and you will be turning pages to know what will happen next.
The first story rolls back to Charles Ponzi (who doesn't know him). The best part about the book is that the author has kept the story from every nature. You will find an imposter and coin collector.
The way the author has done research about this book is impeccable, and this transcends through the pages quite well. Despite the nature of the story, it might repulse someone. However, the way these have been written is engaging and interesting both. Though, we have been seeing such stories through series, media, etc, but an auditor's POV makes this a novel read. These historical events will add to the learning of the reader.
Who doesn't love the true-crime genre? It's one of the fascinating and intriguing genres, that keeps the readers guessing for the upcoming events.

A Ponzi scheme is a form of fraud that lures investors and pays profits to earlier investors with funds from more recent investors. This is very prevalent by the name of Multi-level marketing, but who stared this and how does it actually works? Stories based on not only this but many types of frauds are written in this book. Didn’t feel like I was reading an Indian writer! The stories were crisp & so well written that you ached to be in the era of the fraudsters! A very well written book, with much to learn for a layman - an eye opener for those who get lured in by high return prospects of scams, for the reasons why so many laws exist to protect investors & for the ingenuity of the scams in that that they were so simple & overlooked by authorities till they came into public eye. Looking forward to another instalment by this author.
A pretty bad read; The stories get so boring that I wasn’t able to finish them with repeated efforts, even though an average story would be less than 20 pages. Terrible writing and he certainly had no good tale to tell
