It's time to bring in the animals! Follow a farmer with his tractor and trailer as he goes around his farm. Combines simple counting skills with a catchy song. Includes end notes on farm machinery and crops. This colourful book combines simple counting skills and fun farm animals.
This one REALLY should be a baby book for three reasons: it's all bright colors, it's drawn all sloppy, and the words keep repeating. But you know what? Those animals are smart. They jump out of the farmer's trailer and run away, but then guess what they do? They meet him at the farm!!! Now THAT'S smart!! And there are really good facts at the end about carrots and machines and other veggies, so that's a good part. And some song that we didn't sing. So it was OK even if it should be for babies.
One of those books that has nothing super great about it but for some reason your kid loves it. Has a song in the back that we played on the piano that he loves.
I picked this up at a library sale - there was a note "Watch and Sing Along" and the CD was still there with the book I'd purchased ... unfortunately, I don't have a CD player, or a computer that plays disks. But thought "It really SHOULD be online in this day and age ..." and it IS! https://www.barefootbooks.com/drivetr...
The piano music is also included at the back of the book.
Of course, you can just read the story, and it's still a good little book.
The drawings are very simple, but colorful and cute. You get the repetition, for kids being read to, to follow along and join in. There are animals, and animal sounds (always fun). There are numbers (one cow, two pigs, three pigs, etc). We see the change in seasons. We get a little something unexpected ... a possible sad ending, but then it's a happy ending!
After the story, there are some additional drawings and facts ... information about farm equipment, about the variety of crops to be grown. So beyond the cute story and song, it can actually teach too.
If I had kidlets around ... I'd keep this book for my collection (but I don't, so I'll share). I'll also keep an eye out for other Barefoot books!
This story, put to music, is simply bursting with onomatopoeia. (Onomatopoeia is the process of creating a word that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes. As such words are uncountable nouns, onomatopoeia refers to the property of such words. Wikipedia).
Children listening will love making the animal's sounds and the tractor sounds. The story can become even more animated by adding motions such as rolling hands, steering the wheel, or even clapping.
A c.d. is included, as well as a page showing both guitar chords and musical notation.
Well I don't think you'll get a new copy of this with the CD anymore – there is a link to the audio and animated read-along, however. This is a simple counting song/rhyme/verse of a farmer whose load gets more and more heavy with more and more noisy farm animals, until disaster strikes. It's all very simplistic, very basic and colourful – and judging by the amount of times this has come out over the last thirteen years or so, very successful.
Read with my Turkish host family's children. This one was great fun to read aloud. The brightly coloured pages are good for pointing out colours and animals, and the ending is touching. I'd be happy to reread it, which I can't say for every picture book I've read recently.
We listened to this book-on-CD at least 200 times while we had it checked out from the library, and have sung the song frequently since then. An instant hit with our truck-obsessed toddler.
This is an irresistible book and CD combination that will have parents and kids tapping their toes and singing along. Both the book and the CD can stand alone, but are even better being used together. The music is composed and sung by the award-winning children’s entertainer SteveSongs, who will be familiar to many kids and parents as Mr. Steve, the host of PBS Kids. The song is so infectious that kids of all ages will be quickly singing along. The book features a wide assortment of winning components for toddlers and preschoolers—tractors, farm animals, animal noises (moo moo), tractor sounds (chug, chug, clank, clank, toot!), counting, repetition, humor, even subtle lessons about the seasons. After the conclusion of the story, the authors describe and depict all kinds of farm machinery, different crops that farmers grow, and the book ends with the music for the song, complete with guitar chords for parents or caregivers who might want to play and sing the song themselves. The vibrantly colored and detailed illustrations, painted in a folk art style, will delight children and adults as well.
It's not a favorite of mine, but my two-year-old loves this book. We borrowed it from the library a couple of weeks ago, and he has requested it before his nap and bedtime at least 75% of the time since then.
Pros: rhyming and repetitive, so it becomes easily familiar to toddlers; mentions different numbers, colors, and animal sounds (briefly, but it's a good opportunity to pause while reading and practice counting, etc. with your kid); artwork is colorful and varied
Cons: just...a little boring for adults, maybe.
There are certain children's books that I'm excited to read over and over again with my son, but this one just didn't do it for me. I didn't vote it down for that, though, because storytime with my son is primarily about *his* enthusiasm for reading, and this book gets him excited to read every time he pulls it out of our library bag.
This is another one of those Barefoot song books with repetitive words that will help your toddler start speaking those words. The problem is that these words are pretty monotonous and not much fun.
Moral: Farmers have very busy days.
Length: Nothing could be as long this farmer’s day, but the book tries.
Favorite Line “It’s a very busy day.”
Overall Impression: This farmer helps us learn animals, the sounds animals make, and how to count. Those are all perks. But he also tells us how busy he is TWELVE times. I had a busy day too, farmer. But I’m not complaining about it. In the end, this book is too simple and annoying for repetitive reads. In the back, there’s an explanation of all the different tractors. How I wish that had been the actual story.
Tristan loved this book, the repetitive, rhythmic words and the colorful illustrations (he just turned three and LOVES "krucks"). We got this from the library and it had no cd, I didn't even know there was a song until we turned the last page of the book and saw it. We'd actually sung the words all the way from the beginning without realizing, it's a very singable book. Highly recommended for little guys (and I mean both boys and girls) who love trucks and/or farms.
A farmer has a big day ahead of him. He drives his tractor and picks up all the animals.
What I thought: This book will appeal to readers on so many different levels. There's repetition, onomatopoeia, animals, and a tractor. The illustrations are colorful.
Story Time Themes: Farm Animals, Baby Sit & Sign Animals or Numbers (1-5)
This musical book is so fun! There is a CD of the book in the back and the lyrics and tune are so catchy you'll find yourself singing it all day long! Kids love to do the actions of the chorus. An all around crowd pleaser for Story Time. You can use it for a Farm or Transportation theme! For ages 2 - 6.
3.75 The pictures in this book are great. But the words...felt really annoying an repetitive...then at the end of the book you see the words and notes for the song and the repetition of "a very busy day" doesn't bother you so much! I like it! I liked in the back it talks about different types of tractors and types of plants and when to grow them!
Driving my Tractor is an excellent book for teachers because it has so many different opportunities to use in classrooms. It could be used to teach about counting, farming, or animals. It also provides great illustrations, with details and hints as to what is coming next. It also has music in the back and a CD to sing along to, and it could be used while teaching music too.
I LOVE this book and read it when ever I think I can. I have used this in my Baby/Toddler Time and in my Son's K class (and everywhere in between!). It is always a hit. My copy came with the CD, which was came in handy for getting the tune memorized. The art work is bright, colorful, and large enough for a group to see.
I would use this to teach concepts and counting in my classroom. It is a cute repetitive book that has farm animals and the sounds they make. I would have the students read along with me and guess what the next farm animal would be that the man see's and places in his trailer.
This book would be excellent in a classroom. There are tons on onomatopoeias, information of the types of tractors farmers use, and their crops. It even has a CD in the back of the book so that you have turn the book into a song. Prefect for grade K-2
We got this at the library and my 23 month old loves it, and the video that's on you tube. The highlight for him is all the different equipment descriptions in the back.
