I thought this was a retelling that was the romance between Ares and Aphrodite. which is something I have been looking for. Didn't realize it was simply just smut based somewhat vaguely on Greek gods. I'm sure it's someone's cup of tea, just not mine. I was looking for something that's more like, say, Madeline Miller's type of retelling of Greek myth and not really smut. but different strokes for different folks this might be right up someone else's ally

This book was very problematic. I’ve read many books with modern spins on the myths, this one was nothing more than soft-core porn disguised as literature. But that wasn’t even the worst of it! This thing really needed an editor. The misuse of the English language was horrible - “taught” instead of “taut”, “know” instead of “no” , on and on. I made it halfway through but this is a dnf for me.

I have been obsessing over Greek God's for a while now and more so, I have found myself mostly interested in Ares, God of War. So when I was browsing my Tumblr and I stumbled upon this book, I was very excited to read it. But since finishing, I struggle with what to accurately rate it. I'm probably being generous with a four star, to be honest, but that is because despite the flaws, I really did enjoy it.
To get the negative out of the way:
First off, I did struggle a bit to start with, partly because the first few chapters consist of all Zeus' children in various stage of horniness with one another. This isn't necessary a big problem, except that I was a little put off to see Artemis and Athena in this category as well. These two are well known for being Virgin Goddesses and while I could have shrugged off one of them being changed, having both seemingly desperate for a man's touch was offputting. However, I did make myself stop and let that go because, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with playing with reimaginings and changing things up for the sake of the stories. After that, I actually found it quite easy to let go of these little nitpicks though personally, it would be nice if not every character was frequently drooling over those of the opposite sex. That particular detail did get pretty old.
Secondly, I'm not sure if I just got unlucky when I ordered my copy or if the editing still needs to be worked on. There were several moments in the book that stopped me dead in my reading because it was clearly a typo or a missed mistake that was almost funny at times.
At one point near the very start a sentence seems to drop off and I'm still not sure if it was meant to there or not (as in there was no end quote marks or a fullstop before it was the next paragraph). At another point, there are a couple of words that are misused (one example being "leech" instead of "leash"). Later on one sentence is literally repeated before and after a short quote and there is a bit of inconsistance of Ares' hair color...
I'm also not really big on romance, however I do have exceptions. Ares and Aphrodite is a romance I NEED more of so it's one of the reason this book drew me in and I genuinely do love the way their relationship is handled. It's one of the things that had me so hooked that I finished it in just two days. However, some other background relationships do not have the same appeal (namely Athena and Apollo), though I suppose there is time to build on them in the future.
Now for the good stuff!:
As said, the romance of Ares and Aphrodite is wonderfully done. I'm not quite sure where it's going to go (dare I get my hopes up for a happy ending?) but that's part of what makes it such a good read. On top of that, I liked all the characters and - like I said, after letting go of some nitpicks - I truly enjoyed the way they were each written. It was one of those books where, despite jumping from POV to POV, I was always interested in what would come next. When I first started, I was actually worried it was going to be an over the top smutty type of story but then I got to Zeus and Prometheus' chapter and I found myself genuinely hooked and excited for the tale to come. All the way until the very end. And without giving any spoilers, that last chapter honestly had my jaw on the FLOOR! I must know what happens next!
So in general, I still really liked this story a lot! I hope any future books have a bit more of a proof read so there's no pointedly out of place lines that pull you from the story, but even with all that in this one, it was still a good read that I am glad I brought it.
