Carver goes to El Fuerte to visit his friend, Joe Donelly, only to find out he's dead.
Joe bred prize-winning horses. One of those horses supposedly kicked him to death. Carver doesn't buy that for a minute.
For one thing, Joe was a former Navy SEAL. He taught Carver everything he knew. He was a careful man. Skilled. Quick on his feet. A pro at handling horses.
Carver quickly discovers there were plenty of reasons for someone to want Joe dead. For one thing, he was running for mayor of El Fuerte, and the sitting mayor is as crooked as they come. Joe wasn't big on politics, but the city was threatening to annex his property and he ran for office just to stop it.
The mayor of El Fuerte is also apparently in league with gangs. She runs the city like she owns it. She spends the city's money like it's her own.
She uses gang members to threaten anyone who gets in her way. And the police do everything she says. She owns them lock, stock and barrel.
The more acquainted Carver becomes with the locals, the more convinced he is that one of them killed Joe. But who did it and why?
The guilty might not be a single person. There might be several people who had a hand in Joe's death. And if that's true, it doesn't matter to Carver. He'll send them all to meet their maker.
I like justice and avenging angel stories. They are predictable, but that is what makes them a good escape. As long as the writing and characterizations are good, anyway. This one is better than most. I read these kind of stories for escape not for any literary value.
I would give this one four stars except for all the editing I had to do. Did AI write this? so many Kindle unlimited books are so poorly edited that readers who submit corrections should be paid!! Its laughable! I feel like I'm reading high schoolers papers with all the grammar errors and typos. Amazon should not charge Kindle Unlimited fees for such poorly edited books.
I was hooked at first by the man, the intrigue, the mystery, the complex people. But after several books, it started to feel like Groundhog Day.
Every new installment introduces fresh faces, but the core story remains the same: Enigma, Paola, thugs, and Carver's never-ending dance. It's like the author hit on a formula and is just...reheating it with very little spice.
Carver himself feels one-dimensional now. I crave growth, real change, something to reignite my interest. But alas, it’s not happening.
Kudos to all who are devouring the series! For me, though, it’s time to move on...
Amos is on his way to visit his former mentor in the Seals. The best thing besides seeing his friend is that he lives in a small town, no big cities for Carver after San Francisco.
However, upon his arrival, the police are there and his friend dead- supposedly accidently kicked by a horse. Carver knows this can be and he promises Joe's wife he will find the truth. It's worse than he thinks- the entire town answers to a cartel, the cops, politicians and everyone in charge are crooked.
There are dozens dead, a few saved and the truth for Joe's wife when Carver is done.
Great read wish America had a Carver and a Leon in its corner to take out the rot in America. Need more books like this. Keep up the good work. Man it makes you think of the American future if it became true of cartels taking over cities and towns and posing as police officers etc. recommend to buy this book if you love adventure and a badass hero like Carver.
Carver goes to El Fuente to visit his friend Joe, who was his mentor in the Seals. Joe is dead, kicked in the head, twice, by his horse, or so they said. Joe's wife thinks it is murder and Carvers investigation shows it could not have happened that way. It was murder and everyone in law enforcement seems to be on the take. The cartels own everything. It doesn't matter how many cartel members Carver has to kill, he is going to get to the truth. Awesome ending!
This is a very interesting book about small town that was destroyed by a corrupt government and police force. The book was full of exciting developments that nearly destroyed the town before it was saved. Carver was the hero that came to town because of a good friend who lost his life.
One of the few series I can't put down when I start reading. Read it in a day. Like watching Jack Reacher but in writing. (And no, not the Tom Cruise version).
This is a great action adventure series. While there is still plenty of action in this book, I felt like it slowed down enough to give us time to know Amos Carver a bit better. I highly recommend starting at the beginning of the series.
I like Carter and his adventures to date. Dead by the Dozen is no exception. The book has good pace, great action sequences, and is well edited. I don't need much else for my pleasure reading.
Dead by the Dozen is an outstanding book. Mr. Corwin did an exceptional job with this book. A very interesting plot and a good group of characters. This was a difficult book to put down. I'm looking forward for book six.
My gosh what a awesome book I just through I would give it a try and boy was I surprised it was was one of these books to don't want to put down give it a try!
This was actually better written with a more interesting plot than the previous four books. Very quick read. I don’t know if I could successfully count the numbered killed but if you like pure entertainment numbered decimated doesn’t matter.
Like all the others this was a good story but it was boring in a lot of places I skipped quite a bit from 80% on because all it did was go on about one house and its garden fence and surrounding then on to the next house house and surroundings it went on for several pages
The scheme runs deep and grips many walks of life. What had Carver's friend uncovered that had gotten him killed? Carved is going to find out and make people pay.
Just as good as the Chronicles of Cain but without the magic. Lots of action and very plausible plot line. Finished it in one sitting - excellent read.
I have been reading this series and they are all good, the biggest problem I'm losing sleep, hard to put this down then there is a boat load of interesting charactt
Mr Corwin just keeps winding the suspense, intrigue and tension tighter and tighter. Then Carved comes in and releases it. Great story and an excellent series.
Hook in the opening sentence of the first chapter? Check. Political intrigue, cartels, and crooked cops? Check. Loyalty to a brother in arms, fierce love, intense drama, and hard-nosed, fast paced action? Double check marks! This series gets better with every story. I don’t know how the author can top this one, but I can’t wait to see what he comes up with! I strongly recommend this series and it’s best if you start with the first one and read the books through in order, as they do build on each other.
