Award-winning author, editor, and publisher Danielle Ackley-McPhail has worked both sides of the publishing industry for longer than she cares to admit. In 2014 she joined forces with husband Mike McPhail and friend Greg Schauer to form her own publishing house, eSpec Books (www.especbooks.com).

Her published works include eight novels, Yesterday's Dreams, Tomorrow's Memories, Today’s Promise, The Halfling’s Court, The Redcaps’ Queen, Daire’s Devils, The Play of Light, and Baba Ali and the Clockwork Djinn, written with Day Al-Mohamed. She is also the author of the solo collections Eternal Wanderings, A Legacy of Stars, Consigned to the Sea, Flash in the Can, Transcendence, Between Darkness and Light, The Fox’s Fire, The Kindly One, and the non-fiction writers’ guides The Literary Handyman, More Tips from the Handyman, and LH: Build-A-Book Workshop. She is the senior editor of the Bad-Ass Faeries anthology series, Gaslight & Grimm, Side of Good/Side of Evil, After Punk, and Footprints in the Stars. Her short stories are included in numerous other anthologies and collections.

In addition to her literary acclaim, she crafts and sells original costume horns under the moniker The Hornie Lady Custom Costume Horns, and homemade flavor-infused candied ginger under the brand of Ginger KICK! at literary conventions, on commission, and wholesale.

Danielle lives in New Jersey with her husband and fellow writer, Mike McPhail and four extremely spoiled cats.

I'm in this, so I'm obviously biased. Even so, you will discover voices in this anthology you'll want to hear again.

This is a sampler of short stories, poetry and excerpts from novels by members of Broad Universe.

My taste is for science fiction and fantasy, and I felt that this collection had too many paranormal (vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters) and horror. Also, I learned of this book from Sarah Ettritch's blog, so I expected more stories with a lesbian theme.

My favorites were the excerpt from The Right Asteroid by Michelle Murrain (I found the book on Smashwords but haven't read it yet), the excerpt from Threaded Through Time, Book One by Sarah Ettritch (which I had already bought but not yet read), and Sylvia Kelso's retelling of The Tempest (which seems to be an excerpt since it doesn't have a complete ending, but doesn't have a section afterwards stating if it is from a larger work).

2012 publications and updates:

A reprint of my award winning prose poem, "A Shower of Fireflies," appears in the e-book Broad Spectrum, a compilation of work by members of Broad Universe, the international organization dedicated to supporting and promoting women genre writers.

A short story, "Getting Jade," received an Honourable Mention from CZP's Rannu Fund Contest. This is the second year in a row for this honour. Last year's near win, the Portal Agent, will appear in Dead North, a Canadian Zombie anthology forthcoming from Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Innsmouth Free press. It has been revised and retitled "Mother Down The Well."

My short story "The Clan of The Crazy Babies," is about a train hopping Virginia Oppossum who makes his way from the American South to the marshaling yards of London, Ontario. "Crazy Babies" appears in The Lion and The Aardvark, an anthology of modern Aesop's fables, published by Stone Skin Press, a division of UK games publisher Pelgrane Press, and edited by renowned game designer Robin D. Laws.

Together, Apart, the current (#8) issue of the US speculative poetry magazine Stone Telling, showcases a new prose poem, "Castoroides." It's about a giant beaver who lives on the Ouse, the river behind my house in rural eastern Ontario. Of course my beaver isn't really a visitor from the Pleistocene, but I do tell friends and neighbours, with little exaggeration, that she is almost the size of a sub compact car. And given to the wearing of lace collars, as I've documented. Stone Telling is edited by Shweta Narayan and Rose Lemberg, who also put together the feminist speculative poetry anthology, The Moment of Change, published by Seattle's Aqueduct. Nominate/vote for me in the Rhysling and/or the Auroras, if you so wish!

"The Dreams of Trees," appears in Bibiotheca Fantastica, a metafictional anthology on the delicious theme of mysterious manuscripts, edited by Don Pizarro and Montreal editorial maestro Claude Lalumiere. Carrie Cuinn's Dagan Books is a US small press I know we'll be hearing more from, and about. My short story is about a box of shape shifting journals in protag Sandrine's attic.

That Not Forgotten is a fundraiser anthology edited by Kingston poet Bruce Kauffman and published by Hidden Brook Press. Proceeds will go to refurbishing iconic Canadian poet Al Purdy's house in Ameliasburg, Prince Edward County, as a writers' residence. This hefty collection includes prose and poetry from both newcomers and literary stars. I'm represented with two pieces of flash fiction, "My Mother's Skeleton," and "As If Leaves Could Hide Invisible Beings." Kauffman asked contributors to ponder on what we had lost and found on the north shore of lake Ontario in eastern rural Ontario. As in Purdy's seminal poem "The Country North of Belleville," we've been given words that help us to understand why we are here, and that we're not alone.

A new short story, "The Meaning of Yellow" will appear in the winter issue of WRITE, the magazine of TWUC, the writer's union of Canada, edited by Hal Niedzviecki.

A feature on renowned choreographer James Kudelka's "House of Mirth" appeared in The Dance Current, Canada's national dance magazine. Worth a mention on the fiction updates page as it includes critical commentary on the 1905 novel by Edith Wharton

“Painting Dream,” Chapter Nine of my novel Green Music, will be reprinted in Obsolete Magazine’s upcoming Sci-fi/DIY issue.

I'm in this! so obviously I'm biased. But you'll find a broad--pun intended--selection of work, and this ebook has sentimental value because I have a long history with this organization and am the current President!
