Pressed Together: A Post-WWII Romance in Rural Ohio

Rate this book
World War II is over at last, and the pier amusement park at Buckeye Lake, the “Playground of Ohio,” is lit up, loud, and ready to welcome a summer of better days. The energy of dance hall and roller coaster, though, is disorienting for Sgt. Drew Mathison, weary from battle and trying to track down the one man who can testify in his brother’s murder trial.

He’s not in the mood to celebrate when he simply cannot find that witness. Especially when he suspects Emily Graham, publisher of the Buckeye Lake Beacon, is hiding him. Doesn’t she understand the danger the fugitive has brought to Buckeye Lake?

Determined to save her childhood friend, the beautiful and quirky young woman manages to frustrate not just Drew but her family and community as she tries to fix a whole host of problems by herself.

As Drew and Emily square off amidst secrets and a dangerous game of hide-and-seek, falling in love might be the only way to save the summer … and another life.

Pressed Together by Kim Garee is a historical romance story that has a hint of a mystery that takes place after World War II. The concept of a story that takes place after World War II captured my attention since I have not read many of them. I have read plenty of stories that take place during World War II. One of the glaring issues I had with the plot is that it could have happened today. While the story says that it takes place right after World War II, it read like a contemporary story taken place in a resort town with a woman reporter and a PTSD officer who is running from something but comes to this small town. It reads like a contemporary romance. Similarly, the mystery that forces Drew to this small town wasn’t really explained. The opening chapter does talk about it a little, but I’m confused with the head hopping in the beginning to understand what is going on. The romance takes over the plot with hints of the mystery woven in, but not enough to really lead the plot line. The characters were stock characters who just happen to fall in love while they spend time in the small town. I’m sure this novel is great for contemporary romance fans, but it was really slow for me. I wanted more action. Maybe the bad guy comes to town early on and actually tries to hurt or kill Drew. Or worse, spread rumors about incidents Drew was running away from. Overall, Pressed Together by Kim Garee appeared to be a nice, sweet story of a slower time that I wanted to enjoy, but sadly, it seemed to be just not for me.

I received a complimentary copy of Pressed Together by Kim Garee through Celebrate Lit Tours, but the opinions stated are all my own.

This is my boyfriend's family friend's book. I have never met her, but I can honestly say it was a really good story. I'm not one for mysteries, but this one did keep my interest. Also, the love story between Emily and Drew is very cute and the ending made me smile from ear to ear. It was also fun reading a book from my state (Ohio) because I knew where a lot of the cities were. Finally, she did not shy away from using her God-given gift of writing and praising him in it. the Christian talks and prayers that were written was very sweet and felt very genuine in showing who God is through a novel. In the end, I recommend this book to anyone who is into historical, mystery, romance books 😊.

A fun and compelling read, I devoured this book in a day. Kim found a way to make me miss somewhere I've never been, while somehow making cornfields sound appealing. The audiobook narration was also strong. I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series.

This book is actually worse than I expected, and I didn’t expect a lot.
Let me first make it clear that I am a genuine Christian. I’m not a pew-warmer and I truly love my Lord and my brothers and sisters in Christ. But it’s a painful reality that finding Christian entertainment that’s well made is a very difficult task. Writers seem to feel that they can get away with laziness and poor writing, counting on being published by the Christian publishers who need authors and on being bought and read by consumers who have little else to choose from.

I had hoped that this book would be different. I was tempted by the setting: post WWII Buckeye Lake, Ohio. Although I had reservations with the main male character being called ‘Drew’, a nickname for Andrew that in America did not become popular until at least the 1970s, this is my own backyard and I’m a sucker for anything from WWII era.

I knew the story was a romance, which is my least favorite genre, but it had some mystery and action involved as well. I had high hopes. For a very short time.

Within 2 pages, a character used the phrase, “hot mess” to describe a situation. Utterly unheard of in 1946, but I let it pass based on the basis that the character was only talking to himself, not to others. Still, it put me on my guard.

There were a couple of examples of poorly thought out writing, like the unintentionally amusing, “… Toppy… had pedaled off and was performing a stunt on an empty stomach.”

A woman is described as having “dyed orange hair, [and] a mouth caked with red lipstick.” The description sounds to me like either Cyndi Lauper or Baby Jane ( of Whatever Happened to…) but either way, she would not have been really well tolerated in 1946. People were much less forgiving then of oddities in people’s behavior or appearance.

The last straw for me was a “headline” at the beginning of chapter 2: Zoning hearing scheduled for mega resort proposal. The descriptive ‘mega’ was not used until 1968.

I have a pet peeve about books or movies or anything set back in time but having the characters speak and act as if they’re modern people. This frustrates me enormously in any setting. But this book is supposedly Christian. Why do we, as Christians, think we can get away with so little work and effort on our creative ventures? Why is Christian literature and entertainment so universally cringeworthy?

I don’t ordinarily like to give harsh reviews to anyone. Authors have feelings too, after all. But in this case, I feel that Ms. Garee didn’t even try very hard to set this book in the proper time frame. And why? If she had set it in modern day, I would have stayed with it and given it a full chance.

Pressed Together by Kim Garee is Christian Historical Fiction. The war is over, and Buckeye Lake is ready to celebrate. The pier amusement park—once again alive with blazing lights, rattling roller coasters, and the swing of dance hall music—promises a summer filled with laughter and second chances. But for Sgt. Drew Mathison, the noise and color only heighten the chaos inside him.

Drew doesn’t come to Buckeye Lake to celebrate peace. He comes carrying the weight of combat and a single, driving purpose: to find the man who can testify in his brother’s murder trial. When that witness seemingly vanishes, Drew’s hope for justice begins to slip away, fueling his suspicion—especially toward Emily Graham, the clever and unconventional publisher of the Buckeye Lake Beacon, whom he suspects is playing a direct role in shielding the witness that stands between him and answers.

Emily is everything Drew is not—optimistic, determined, and fiercely loyal. Protecting her childhood friend feels like the right thing to do, even when it means standing against Drew, her family, and the entire community. Watching Emily try to solve every problem on her own adds both tension and heart to the story, making her a heroine easy to root for despite her risky choices.

The push-and-pull between Drew and Emily crackles with emotion as secrets pile up and danger inches closer. Set against the lively amusement park, their story becomes a compelling contrast between the joy everyone wants to embrace and the pain neither of them can ignore. The author skillfully weaves romance, suspense, and postwar healing into a narrative that kept me turning pages.

At its core, this novel is about more than a hidden witness or a murder trial. It’s about wounded souls learning to trust again, about love that grows in the most unexpected circumstances, and about how sometimes the only way forward is together.

With a vivid setting, substantial emotional depth, and a slow-burning romance full of tension and tenderness, this story is perfect for readers who enjoy historical fiction with heart. If you love post–World War II romances that blend mystery, faith, and hope, this book is well worth the read.

If you enjoy Christian Historical fiction, consider Pressed Together by Kim Garee. I definitely recommend it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

It is time to sit back and enjoy a nice journey right after WWII has ended. Men are arriving home with war stories and trying to get their normal lives back. I like how the author brings us into a town where routines seem normal and the war is now a distant memory. For some though the war has changed them. They made friends while serving in the trenches together but have lost touch with them.

The author brings history and nostalgia to this heartwarming story. It was fun to read about the amusement park and how many people loved taking their friends and family to experience all the rides and food that was available. I could hear the laughter as people gathered in lines to wait their turn. The smell of cotton candy and popcorn filled the air as children ran to grab a treat.

Now this story is not just about an amusement park but for me it really gave me a touch of small town hospitality. Drew has come to the small town looking for someone. He is determined to find the person who can identify his brother’s killer. Drew is a strong character with convictions that allow us to see his faith. He can be a bit standoffish at times but I think he was so focused on his mission he didn’t want to get familiar with people.

Emily made me laugh so much with her quirky gum smacking and over the top never ending need to be in the know. She does run a newspaper but she sure seemed to be in everyone’s business. She holds secrets that could be worthy of printing in the paper but holds back until she gets all her facts straight.

Drew isn’t very receptive to being interviewed by Emily even though she is nice to look at. He wants to blend into the town so he can find his witness and return to get justice for his brother. I like that Drew has patience and shares his faith with others. There is a strong theme of family and the importance of helping others in the story.

Along with a mystery, historical theme, a sweet relationship and relying on God , the book will draw readers in. Be sure to give yourself time to enjoy each page as the story comes to life. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

A character-driven story, Pressed Together by Kim Garee, is set against a backdrop of postwar America during the 1940s. Gum-chewing newspaper reporter, Emily Graham, and secret-keeping war veteran, Drew Mathison, engage in subtle yet whimsical flirtation befitting their respective personalities in this delightful story. This book has so many worthwhile elements: romance, mystery, humor, and some well-done surprises.

The romantic undertones, though they pulse with intensity, are hidden just enough that the anticipation of their reveal deepens the mystery permeating the book. Witty banter and forced-proximity flirting add stylish humor to the story. Garee’s writing style is so natural, its flow puts you right there among all the boardwalk activities of summer in Ohio. The stylistic addition of newspaper headlines to start each chapter was fun, too. In addition to the two main characters, many side characters with quirky personalities and endearing traits add flavor to the story. Even their names—Hickory, Smokey—had me chuckling.

The small-town charm gives the narrative a cozy feel, while the mystery hums a perpetual tune in the background, making you wonder when and how the truth will be revealed. The subplot twists ever so subtly throughout the story in a cleverly designed way and adds a narrative thrill that lends a full appreciation to the tension between characters. The revelation of the mystery utterly surprised me at the end.

Though it is a historical romance, the book has a contemporary feel that makes it completely relatable. What I enjoyed most about this quick-paced read was the faith thread woven into the fabric of the chapters, giving this book a lean toward depth but not in a way that distracts or feels forced. Definitely a must-read for fans of historical or contemporary romance.

Pressed Together is a WWII era novel that is written by Kim Garee. This is the first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be my last. I love the fact that it is set in my home state of Ohio. It's well written and will transport readers back to a time where life was different.

The war is over, and in Buckeye Lake, Ohio life is trying to get back to normalcy. The area’s famous pier amusement park—complete with its dance halls, boardwalk hustle, and the classic wooden coaster known as The Dips—is alive with celebration and a sense of new beginnings.

We meet Sgt Drew Mathison. He has returned home from war, and while most are enjoying time with their family and friends, he is on a mission to find the person who may be able to testify in his brother's murder case. He is motivated by grief, loyalty, and a strong sense of justice. He suspects that the publisher of The Buckeye Lake Beacon, Emily Graham may know who he is looking for. Emily is deeply rooted in her community and fiercely loyal to her friends. While Drew is driven by wanting to see justice - Emily feels that protecting her friends is the right thing to do.

I loved this story. I loved the setting, and I found myself lost researching the amusement park. I loved the tension between the characters, the theme of healing after war, and watching the characters evolve.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

As a native Ohioan, I found this book interesting and fun. The setting took place right after WW2, unfortunately, even though Drew and his three brothers survived the war, one of them was murdered here in the states. All of his searching brings him to Buckeye Lake, Ohio, in search of the man who witnessed and may be involved with his brother's murder. So, Drew takes a job as a part-time officer. Here is where he meets newspaper reporter Emily Graham, who has her own fair share of problems.

I really enjoyed the setting of the amusement park, especially as we are season passholders to one and visit a lot. I hadn't really read a novel with the setting, and I liked getting a look at life trying to get back to normal and upbeat after the war. Families trying to have fun and spend precious time together especially since the world was just embroiled in such an ugly war.

Drew and Emily spend a lot of time together. Helping one another with their mysteries. They can't help falling in love, even though neither expected that. This was an engaging mystery with a wonderful romance set in an unique time and place. I also think the title fits so well.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.

I was impressed with this debut novel and how well the story flowed. The visualization this book evokes made me feel like I was at the amusement park enjoying the sights and sounds. I loved how the author kept me guessing as to where exactly Gilbert is hiding as I usually figure things out easily, therefore this was a big plus to me. The characters were very real feeling and well written in my opinion. I loved gum chewing Emily and her loyalty to family, friends, and her town. She is trying to be everything to everyone and puts herself aside in the process. Drew is driven by tracking down his brother’s killer after WWII but can romance creep in and open his war weary heart. There are so many dynamics that come into play in this story that keeps you on your toes and loving every minute of it. I give this five stars for originality, great characterization, and a fun amusement park setting that leaves you thinking about it for days afterward. I really look forward to reading more by this author as her story evokes feelings and anticipation. I recommend giving her book a try as you will walk away feeling satisfied from a great read.

I love historical fiction novels. And WWII is one of my favorites. So this post-war novel was definitely one that I knew I wanted to read. It did not disappoint!

This novel has a hint of mystery as well as romance. So you get some history, some mystery, and romance. I love it when you get more out of one book!

I think the novel reads well. The characters were compelling. It read quickly, and I never felt like I needed to walk away.

Because I’m a lover of history, I do know a lot about history and really wish the author had researched the time period a smidge more to get the language and styles correct. That’s not a deal breaker in a book for me because I can change it in my mind; however, it is a deal breaker in movies, as they have no excuse.

I believe that this is the author’s first book, and therefore, she gets some extra leeway. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. Definitely an author to follow along with!

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

Christian Historical Fiction is a favorite Genre of mine. Pressed Together by Kim Garee is the most recent in this genre that I have read. It is Book 1 in the Together Series.

I was reeled into the storyline from the first few pages. The setting is after World War ends and takes place in Ohio. The main characters in this story are Sgt. Drew Mathison and publisher Emily Graham. Sgt. Drew is glad to be back in Ohio after serving in the war and he would usually look forward to Summer on the Pier at Buckeye Lake. He is only interested in finding the one witness to his brother's murder as the trial is coming up soon. Emily Graham is a Publisher of the local Newspaper and she understands that Drew wants to find the witness and Drew thinks she might now who that person is. A rift and all out battle arises as Emily wants to protect her friend, yet Drew really needs Emily's friend to testify in the trial. I was very intrigued when a Romance begins between the pair, was not expecting that to happen. The pair begin to become allies more then enemies in this story. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Fiction. GREAT BOOK!

Pressed Together takes place post WWII, which is always an interesting setting, in my opinion, with (some) soldiers returning home and families seeking “normal” living.

I like Drew and Emily, and the small-town charm offers a sense of nostalgia and had me yearning for summer and wanting to visit Buckeye Lake Amusement Park. With a blend of mystery and romance, I felt a part of the story and rooted for them to find answers and love.

Perhaps my favorite part of this story were the threads of faith, family, and hope throughout. With surprises, humor, and a satisfying ending, this was an exciting read. I look forward to reading more in the series.

Pressed Together is set just after World War II, in the summer bustle of Buckeye Lake, Ohio, where lights from an amusement park glow against a nation still learning how to settle after loss. Soldiers are home, routines are resuming, and beneath the surface, unresolved grief and unanswered questions remain close at hand.

Sgt. Drew Mathison arrives carrying a singular purpose: to locate a witness tied to his brother’s death. His search places him in quiet tension with Emily Graham, a newspaper publisher rooted deeply in the rhythms and relationships of her community. As the story unfolds, loyalties are tested, secrets are carefully held, good intentions ripple outward in unexpected ways, and quiet choices begin to matter more than anyone anticipates.

The novel leans into small-town life, postwar adjustment, and the friction that arises when duty and compassion intersect. Romance develops alongside a gently unfolding mystery, framed by family connections, community ties, and the lingering imprint of the war years. Pressed Together offers a reflective look at healing, responsibility, and the choices people make when the past refuses to stay neatly behind them.

I received a digital ARC from the publisher and Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write a positive review and received no compensation. All thoughts and opinions shared here are my own, offered honestly and with care, with a focus on the writing, faith content, and overall reading experience.

As many of you know, I much prefer romance to be a subtle side plot than the main story line, however, I’m not sure if it was the font the author used, the smell of the physical copy of the book, or the way the author wrote the story, I found myself thoroughly enjoying this book.

I loved each and every character. Emily is hard-working, passionate, and persistent. Drew is quiet, loyal, and stubborn. Their different personalities made a for a fun dynamic in their relationship. But there was also an undertone of romance and you couldn’t help but root for them–despite the secrets they hid from each other.

Kim Garee is really a talented author. Every plotline–main and subplot–felt flushed out enough, the romance did not feel forced, and the death threats and the missing Gil Reese helped to keep me on my toes and turning the pages.

Overall, I would highly recommend this novel, especially if you like romance with a dash of suspense.

Pressed Together by Kim Garee is a fictional novel that takes place at Buckeye Lake, Ohio right after World War II. Sgt. Drew Mathison arrives in town searching for the only witness to his brother's murder and begins to suspect that the publisher of the Buckeye Lake Beacon newspaper, Emily Graham, could be concealing him.

This was an incredible novel with such a compelling story, dynamic and lovable characters, and an exciting hot-summer-on-the-lake setting. The writing was superb.

I adored the romance in this novel and felt like it was done so perfectly! So was the mystery, which had me on the edge of my seat. This novel made me want to time travel back to visit the Buckeye Lake amusement park and watch fireworks on the lake.

I'm super excited for the second novel in the Together series to release in December and I can't wait to see more of these fantastic characters!

Kim Garee’s fresh, unique voice for her debut novel, Pressed Together, offers a stunning story filled with mystery and romance. The story takes place in the 1940s, after the war and is intriguing, suspenseful, and enjoyable. (I lost some sleep over this one) The characters are so well written. Emily has spunk, and Drew has a purpose, and their love story that underlies the mystery is seamlessly woven in. The setting will draw you into the time period in such a way you’ll wish you could go play in the park and visit the tow island. All the secondary characters lend depth to the story. I’m looking forward to books two and three of the Together series. I received a free copy. Opinions are my own.

Kim Garee is a new-to-me author. Pressed Together is the first of a series, and is set shortly after World War II. It was fun to learn a little bit about the amusement park at Buckeye Lake, Ohio.

I will admit, the story seemed to start a little slow for me, but it grew to attract my attention more as it went. Perhaps that has more to do with the current circumstances in my life, rather than the book itself.

Emily is self-sufficient, a little nosey (aren't all reporters?), maybe even a little annoying at times. Drew is determined, yet seems a little withdrawn. Yet attraction seems to grow between them, in spite of themselves.

If you enjoy Christian fiction set post-World War II, with a touch of mystery and a dose of romance, then you'll want to add this to your TBR list.

"Pressed Together" by Kim Garee, is set in America during the 1940s after the war. This is a clean love story between Emily Graham, and Drew Mathison. This book has romance, mystery, humor, and surprises. I was turning the pages because I had to see how it would all end. This was a fast-paced book. I really enjoyed this book and the characters were so "real" that I am sure readers can imagine watching the scenes unfold as they read the book. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in this series

Pressed Together is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. The author has done an excellent job of evoking post-WWII mid-America. Emily is a fascinating mix of naivete and world-weary. Drew is a battle-hardened soldier trying to get past the last four years when he learns of his brother’s murder. The family dynamics are complex and realistic as each character has his and her own issues to deal with, and I love Emily’s relationship with her sister. The book is categorized as romantic suspense, but the suspense aspect doesn’t materialize until the last third of the book but shows up in force. A couple of twists added a nice finish to the story. I’m looking forward to the next books in the series. Highly recommended.

3.5 stars. When you introduce a character in the prologue, don't drop him until the second half. The reader wants to follow Gilbert's journey throughout, but we didn't find out his whereabouts until well into the second half of the book. There were ways to revisit his POV without giving anything away to the reader. Also, the jolly, happy-go-lucky protagonist can sometimes get annoying, and the other characters were a bit one-dimensional.
