Laid out before you is a harsh and cheerless world, where all the shots are called by the omnipresent System. The inhabitants live in gloomy corridors with no ends in sight, appearing here not only with no memory, but also totally deprived of their limbs. They are all "volitional nullforms," meaning that they agreed to this fate, and despite no one remembering when or why they did so, they all strive to survive at any cost.

Number 11, known to all as Elb, has no intention of eking out a miserable existence, wanting instead to understand what is going on. Having begun by restoring order in their native outskirt, he and his team progress ever further, crushing their enemies and earning points from the System.

In book 8, Elb remains faithful to his calling in Zombieland. He may succeed where hitherto nobody has succeeded, and complete the Blue Light mission. On the way, Elb contemplates the next location, Crontown, legendary city of true heroes. In the meantime, appearing unexpectedly on the horizon are some folks who sometime quit Elb's squad.

How their reunion pans out, and how the story unfurls, will be revealed to you in this book.

I am not a fan of LitRPG novels. I am not a gamer; I am from a generation before gaming at home was possible. Arcades are where we gamed, and we never had a HUD to tell us about tasks and rewards. Consequently, I was not excited about this series when I was given the first book to read. I was hooked.
This series of books, telling tye tale of a fallen world through tye eyes of someone who can't remember being in top, but who knows he has fallen to tye lowest possible status...almost as he is a Goblin and not a worm, Elb and his comrades climb ever higher, seeking to know who and where the Elves are. By taking Memback, a.k.a. Elven Tears, Elb is assembling pieces of his past, and knowing he will run into the mess of his past life eventually. But will he recognize it?
In this latest release, Elb has picked up new fighters, some of whom are not made to survive. He is seeking to open the next level of this gaming replicating world. The only way he can get more answers, and move closer to the elves, is by lighting the Blue Torch. Is it possible?

I am expectantly waiting for book 9 in this series.

Found my mind drifting at times. I wasn't bored and this wasn't bad. The series has its issues but nothing new on that front. Book 8 was fine. We're closer to the elves. Perhaps we'll meet the overlords soon.

Nullform #8 by Dem Mikhailov continues the harrowing journey of Elb, also known as Number 11, in the dystopian realm governed by the omnipresent System. This installment delves deeper into the treacherous landscapes of Zombieland, presenting Elb with challenges that test his resolve and leadership.

Plot Overview

Elb remains steadfast in his mission within Zombieland, aiming to accomplish the elusive Blue Light task—a feat deemed impossible by many. As he navigates this perilous environment, Elb contemplates the next destination: Crontown, a legendary city revered as the domain of true heroes. Unexpectedly, former squad members who had previously departed reappear, adding complexity to Elb's journey and decisions.

Character Development

Elb's evolution is marked by introspection and resilience. His encounters with past comrades prompt reflections on loyalty, trust, and the burdens of leadership. The reintroduction of former team members enriches the narrative, offering insights into Elb's past decisions and their ramifications.

World-Building and Atmosphere

Mikhailov's depiction of Zombieland is both vivid and haunting. The desolate corridors, the ever-present threats, and the overarching control of the System create an atmosphere of tension and urgency. The anticipation of reaching Crontown adds a layer of intrigue, hinting at revelations and challenges yet to come.

Writing Style and Pacing

The narrative maintains a balanced pace, intertwining action sequences with moments of reflection. Mikhailov's prose is concise, effectively conveying the grim realities of the world while delving into the psychological landscapes of his characters.

Overall Assessment

Nullform #8 is a compelling continuation of Elb's saga, blending action, character development, and world-building. It sets the stage for future revelations and challenges, keeping readers engaged and eager for the next installment.

Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars)

While the book excels in many areas, some readers might find certain plot elements familiar. Nevertheless, the strengths of the narrative, particularly its rich world-building and character arcs, overshadow these minor shortcomings.

For those interested in an immersive auditory experience, the audiobook version, narrated by Andrew B. Wehrlen, brings the story to life with compelling narration.
