Bosses, Coworkers, and Building Great Work Relationships from Harvard Business Review turned out to be just the book I needed as I embarked on a new chapter in a different department at work. While some may see such a transition as daunting, this book provides comfort and clarity on the dos and don’ts of building new connections in the workplace.
It’s no secret – having strong work relationships contributes greatly towards a more manageable and memorable career journey, knowing we have the right people around us during both the good and tough times. Our support system at work can come from all levels: peers, subordinates, mentors, and even bosses. The goal is to create internal visibility and value exchange, with an overall focus on building healthy relationships. There is great strength in genuinely taking the initiative to help others, through building beneficial skills and showcasing each other’s talents. This book also shares how to identify challenging personalities, why some of our coworkers behave the way they do, and how to manage them.
Stakeholder management is both important and inevitable. This book emphasises drafting a development plan that includes the projects we’ve agreed to take on, new skills we need to acquire, and the key stakeholders we should start building relationships with. One-to-one sessions with managers should also be incorporated into this plan, focusing not only on our own career development but also on how we can offer support to our managers.
I also appreciated how the book did not shy away from mentioning office politics – and the positive influence it can have on our careers when leveraged ethically. This encourages us to be selective in curating a healthy network and to expand our reach laterally to peers in different parts of the organisation.
Small reminders can certainly go a long way in positioning ourselves as a reliable and consistent contributor in the workplace. With this book in hand, I hope it brings you greater confidence when transitioning to a new environment with unfamiliar people – and helps you build even stronger relationships within your existing circle.
I would like to thank Times Reads for this review copy in exchange for my honest review!
I really liked how accessibly written this book is- the chapters were so jargon-free that it felt conversational. I also really liked the chapter summaries at the end. I was hoping for some more papers cited, but then I realized at the end that many of the authors were academics with industry experience, so the anecdotes were probably more than enough- I wish the author list/info somehow came before the rest of the chapters. I was also hoping for some more depth and explanation, since the book is marketed towards young adults entering/new to the workforce (the chapters were pretty short!) Thanks to HBR and Netgalley for an ARC!
