Bailey Meredith has had it. As an assistant at a prestigious interior design firm, she’s tired of making coffee and filing invoices. She’ll do just about anything to get out from under the paperwork and into the field for real experience. Then she sees an ad for a job that seems too good to be true.
He's a fixer upper . . .
Wilder Aldrich knew she would be perfect for the crew the moment he saw her. His hit home improvement show only hired the best, and Bailey had potential written all over her. It isn’t just her imaginative creativity and unmatched work ethic that grabs his attention. There’s just something about her.
With chemistry on screen, it’s only a matter of time before sparks fly behind the scenes as well. But with Bailey’s jaded views on romance and a big secret that could destroy Wilder and everyone he cares about, are either of them willing to risk it all for love?
Laura Chapman is the author of sweet and sexy romantic comedies, including Playing House, The Marrying Type, the Queen of the League series, and other stories. A native Nebraskan, she loves football, Netflix marathons, and her cats, Jane and Bingley.
My husband and I are in the process of building a house right now and to say he’s obsessed with HGTV is putting it mildly. He always has it on when we’re home and though I didn’t see the appeal of these types of shows at first, they’ve admittedly grown on me. There’s something so satisfying about seeing a whole remodel or renovation being completed in thirty minutes, even if I know it’s unrealistic. Getting to see behind the scenes of a home improvement show AND adding in funny romance was like a match made in heaven for me.
Bailey was just a doll, the perfect lead character for a rom com, and I would totally watch the movie version of Playing House. She’s passionate about interior design and when the opportunity to work as an assistant designer on one of the top rated shows for the Design Network arises, she’s pretty excited. Waverly and Wilder are the couple behind an uber successful TV series, they have an adorable four year old daughter, Virginia and seem to be living a dream life. But not is all as it seems, and Bailey soon finds out that besides clever editing and sneaky reshoots, Waverly and Wilder are keeping some pretty big personal secrets as well.
This one was just a ball of fun and had such a great energy. Wilder and Bailey had indisputable chemistry despite some complications and reservations on both ends. Wilder oozed sex appeal, as a Texas native he had the whole gentlemanly, southern charm routine nailed. Besides those two, there was a great supporting cast of likable characters. Paige is Bailey’s older sister, Felix is one of the crew, Renée is the shows producer, and then Waverly and little Virginia round it all out. They all brought something unique to the table and I would love to see more of any of them and am hoping the author has plans to turn this into a series? If you’re looking for a sexy, flirty read with a few surprises thrown in along the way, look no further.
When Bailey Meredith accepts a job as assistant interior designer on a TV home make over show, she looks forward to having the opportunity to create and see some of her ideas come to fruition.
Wilder and Waverley, the stars of said show, parents of adorable Virginia, seem like the perfect partners, the ideal foils to each other's contrasting personalities.
However, appearances can be deceptive, and when sparks fly between Bailey and Wilder, the superficial package marketed to TV audiences is in danger of imploding, with far reaching consequences for our characters and their inner circle of friends.
Just how far would you go to maintain the public mask and what price would you place on your personal life, future felicity and peace of mind?
I loved this deeply satisfying story, one delightfully peppered with spice and sizzling chemistry.
This author has a wonderful voice, with an instinctive ability to write seemingly light yet deeply compelling characters,in a realistic and addictive manner.
This is the second book I've read by this author but it certainly won't be my last! Highly recommended!
**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**
Is that a hammer in your tool belt or are you just happy to see me?
You'll have to forgive me for the dumb jokes. I'm running on little sleep because I stayed up late to finish this book!
Bailey is stuck in a job that is going nowhere and isn't putting her design aspirations to good use. Looking for something that will give her a chance to show her talent, she applies for a job with a mysterious employer. After a few rounds of phone calls, she's been asked to come in for a live interview. Little does she know, but she's being considered for a spot on a reality television home design show.
Wilder is also stuck between a rock and a drywall. Get it? *snicker* I already warned you that I'm a sarcastic zombie here. He's the co-star of a tv show but he's also carrying around a big... secret. (You thought I was going to make a joke there, didn't you?) Well, there is definitely nothing funny about being a part of a fake celebrity couple which means every day of Wilder's life is essentially a lie, put on for the cameras.
Continuing this sham of a marriage has worked so far. However, once Bailey enters the picture, sparks fly between her and the handyman Wilder. And they aren't the only ones to notice. But giving in to the temptation means keeping yet another secret and eventually even the best kept secrets come to light. Who will be left standing when the walls come tumbling down? *chuckle* I'm really liking these home improvement jokes...
This book had a couple of new themes for me. One, I have read a few books that featured a reality show, but none with a home design theme. As someone who actually used to watch these flip-this-house sort of shows, I really liked reading about the tv show portion.
Two, I can honestly say that I don't think I've read a story with a couple who were so effectively faking a relationship until now. I mean, Wilder and Waverly have a daughter together and it actually took me a few chapters to realize that they were not really together. Kudos to the author for making me pay attention to the clues. I had my reservations at first, but I was happy to see that there wasn't any cheating in this book.
As for our couple, they were a great pair. Bailey was a hard worker and a take-action gal. Wilder was no slouch, either, and the two of them had a natural chemistry together. Their road to happiness was littered with troubles, though. Surgeries, conceptions, contracts, and even flames stood in their way, at times. The romance had some spice and the secondary characters added humor to the mix.
In closing... In all, this book was a nice read with a few twists, a couple of surprises, and a pair of bruised hearts who need each other's strength to heal. Four suns!
Sparks Playing House... What an exceptional name for this story!! For my first story by Laura Chapman this was a cute story. I loved the playfulness between the characters as their relationships built throughout the story. It's not always pretty or easy, but when love sparks there isn't any stopping it!!! I look forward to reading more books by Laura Chapman, more of this story-line could be a great series too. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book via Tasty Book Tours for an honest blog tour review. Due to sexual situations, this book is recommended for readers 16 and older.
What a cute book! This one was a fast read, and as an avid watcher of HGTV, I loved it.
Bailey is an errand runner in a large firm. She longs to use her designing degree and put her talents to work, when her dream job basically lands in her lap. It's working on a realty series in Austin, TX, a show that fixes up houses.
Wilder is the co-host of the show and instantly there is a connection between the two of them. That's all I'm going to say about the plot because I don't want to give any thing away!
Both of them have hurdles from their past to overcome. As the plot unfolds, I was kept guessing up until the very end as to what was going to happen. Would Wilder and Bailey end up together? The chemistry between them was undeniable. I loved both characters and thought the author did a great job of developing them. The story is told from Wilder and Bailey's POV, which I absolutely love. It works really well.
For a fun read with some twits and turns, I highly recommend Playing House!
For fans of HGTV shows, this book is perfect. It’s like being able to go behind the scenes to find out what really goes on with the supercouples after the cameras quit rolling.
I loved Bailey and the gang. This story had you rooting for the good guys and hating the "bad" guys. Some parts got a little steamy—but in a good way. I thought it was artfully done. There were several black moments where I thought, “This situation is unfixable.” Yet (without giving anything away) the story was brought to an extremely satisfying close.
Bailey Meredith is ready to quit her job as long as she can find another position where she'll at least -- be able to show off her design skills, instead of being the one to make coffee and file invoices. When the perfect job comes along, giving her an opportunity to work on a home improvement show with Wilder Aldrich, there's no way she'll turn it down. However, working alongside Wilder proves difficult, because of the strong chemistry bouncing between them. Will she be able to resist temptation, or will Wilder be the first man to prove happy ever after is possible for her?
What a delightful, fast-paced read that kept me entertained from start to finish, because of the main characters, the dialogue that illustrated superbly the heroine's love for design and the challenges these two face on their journey to happy ever after. The way this story started had me wanting to know more about the heroine and why she's such a worrier; someone that is always concerned about every little thing. However, the heroine and the hero coming face-to-face for the first time is where this story really started to gain my undivided attention, because the hero has never known anyone like the heroine. Certainly, his ex is nothing like her.
As for the dialogue, it was intense due to the main characters back stories. The heroine frustrated me at times with her being so adamant that love isn't for her and there's no way she'll give up her independence for a man. Why is she so against relationships? Does she truly believe that if she commits to a man that he'll end up doing to her what her father did to her mother? While the hero, he's been keeping up a lie about he and his ex, and I was glad that he finally decided enough was enough. Why should he continue to put his life on hold for his ex, even though he knows it's best for his daughter?
The heroine was strong, brave, extremely bossy, independent and I liked how determined she was to do a good job, even though she wasn't getting the credit she deserved. Also, I liked the fact that she remained cool under pressure when facing Wilder's ex when the woman was annoyed by something. However, what I liked most about the heroine was how she gave Wilder a chance, even when there seems to be no hope for them towards the end, or so she believes, because he'll always do what's right for his daughter.
While the hero, he has some tough decisions to make and I liked that he did what was right for him, instead of continuing to allow his ex to dictate the terms of his life and make him continue to do something that he'd rather not. Using their daughter as leverage was wrong of her, and I could understand why he finally wants to say enough is enough. It's not fair to him when his ex is getting what she wants, but he isn't when what he wants most is the heroine. Also I liked the bond he shared with his daughter, and that he would do anything for her.
Overall, Ms. Chapman has delivered a really good read in this book, which encompassed plenty of chemistry between the main characters that spilled over onto the pages nicely, and illustrated how much these two need each other. The way this story ended brought tears to my eyes, because of the sacrifice the heroine was willing to make, even though it was palpable how much these two loved each other. However, I liked how they were reunited the most. Luckily, the hero doesn't give up when he wants something or someone bad enough. I would recommend Playing House by Laura Chapman, if you enjoy books by authors Olivia West, Emily Waters, or Kate Goldman.
This book kept me awake reading until all hours of the night - it's been awhile since that has happened, but I am so glad that I did! A fellow "book nerd" sent me this book and while it was on the TBR list, I figured that she loved it so much that I would move it to the top of my list, and I am SO glad that I did!! This book was funny, it was engaging, it made the reader laugh, cry and fume with anger at times, but it was lighthearted and it was just plan FUN! I loved the characters, the plot, the author's writing style, and most of all I love the emotions that you can feel from the author straight out of the pages of the story. The reader will want to live in the renovated houses in Texas long after they finish the story. Be prepared for a book hangover!
You will want to root for Bailey and Wilder right from the start, and of course, you will instantly dislike Waverly, but she may have some redeeming qualities...maybe...If you love fixer-upper shows, home improvement or any type of design shows then you will love this book. The author takes the reader on a home improvement journey that has them questioning whether or not they should find a super hot contractor to get some remodeling done....or perhaps become their assistant...
An amazing read from start to finish and one that will keep you awake because you need to know what happens. There is no good stopping point, so keep that in mind when you start to read!
I'm not normally a fan of rom-com (in books, I love it in movies) but I really enjoyed this story. First, it was cool reading a behind-the-scenes of what happens on design shows; I'm a fan of Property Brothers and various other HGTV house-fixer stories, so I liked that element of the story. Second, the characters were all likable. The protagonist is a strong female that doesn't act like a moron around men which is always nice to read. Wilder, the man in the book, is also likeable and nearly perfect when it comes to men. There was a healthy blend of conflict as well as comedic relief, and *ahem* an especially steamy scene. If you like chick lit and rom-coms, I would definitely suggest this read!
This book was a really fun read. Bailey wants to advance her career as an interior designer and ends up being the successful candidate as a design assistant for a television home improvement/design show. The show's co-hosts are Wilder and Waverly - two loving parent to a little girl named Virginia. As she works away on the show, Bailey discovers that not everything is as it seems, and that television can make people believe anything. Laura Chapman has created characters that were very easy to relate to, and I found myself rooting for love to prevail. This story touches on a lot of modern day themes, including ambition, greed, broken homes, and keeping up with appearances.
This is the second book I've read by Laura Chapman and I really love her style. Her hero is good looking and sexy but funny, goofy at times a bit insecure and a little nerdy. The female lead in this story is a strong character with her head on straight and seemingly willing to speak up for herself and what she wants. With the story set within a tv show its hard to tell where reality steps in. This is a romantic comedy that gives you just a bit of suspense in that you don't quite know if it will all work out for the best. However as in most Rom-Coms you eventually get your HEA.
I loved everything about this book! The connection between Bailey and Wilder - Bailey's family drama - Wilder's love for his daughter - the thrill of remodeling old houses - the turmoil of reality TV! I was Team Bailey from the beginning! As you read, you become part of the story and can feel the emotions between the characters. Wilder is totally swoon-worthy! I got a Chip and Joanna Gaines vibe between Wilder and Bailey - such great chemistry. Such a feel-good read that warms your heart and gives you hope in relationships!
Sparks Playing House... What an exceptional name for this story!! For my first story by Laura Chapman this was a cute story. I'm a huge fan of Chapman's Queen of the League fantasy football series & decided to try her latest novel. Once I find an author I like, I like to read them all. I was not disappointed. Playing House's behind-the-scenes look at a network design show was so fun and realistic I found myself wishing I could binge watch the episodes in real life. No such luck, since Playing House and the DN Network are both inventions of Laura Chapman's fertile imagination. Definitely recommend this one!
3.5 Stars. This is definitely one to be put on your beach/summer reading list. It’s cute, quick, quirky, and entertaining. The main characters are believable and very likable, even though I wanted to bash Wilder over the head a few times. Bailey has some issues that stem from her childhood. Wilder had a fantastic childhood but has definite issues in adulthood. Watching them overcome them was fun!
This was a cute book and i love design shows so it was cool to get a feel for what it's like in a behind the scenes on these types of shows. However, a lot of this book felt way too fantasy for me, i didn't feel like real people would act or talk the way the characters in this book do. In the end though, i was happy with how everything turned out.
Hmm an okay read but to be honest didn’t flow as well as it could have and I didn’t really take to many of the characters. Read it but wouldn’t go looking for the next one.
I really enjoyed the story line of this book! It was different and kept me engaged! I really like Chapman's writing style! She really brought these characters to life!
I love renovation shows, so when I saw the blurb for this book, I knew I would love it. The concept was great and I can’t believe I hadn’t read anything similar before. It seems like such great idea with how popular reno shows are. I loved that it demonstrated that there is a lot of editing before the show hits the screens. Even when it’s reality television, it is still heavily edited. This definitely added an element of truth to the story.
The characters had to be my favourite thing about the book. They were just so well thought out and developed. They were realistic and you loved all of them from Bailey to Waverly. They were flawed but managed to have growth by the end of the book. To me, it’s important to be able to relate to something in the book and for me, it was the characters.
Playing House was so easy to read and very hard to put down. There are twists. At one point I was like “OMG NO WAY” and my prediction had turned out to be incorrect. I love a book that I cannot guess the next thing to happen.
I am looking forward to reading more by Laura Chapman. I had been waiting for an opportunity to read one of her books for a while now and I am so glad I made this book a priority read.
My recommendation: If you are a fan of renovation shows, you will love this.
I have read all of Laura's previous books so how could I not read this one? I know even before I start one of her books that it is going to be a fun read and that I'm going to love the world she takes me to. Playing House is wonderful story, just like her other ones, but this one has a much different feel to it.
With Playing House, Laura has taken her writing to a whole new level. This book is more complicated and evolved, the characters have more depth and seemed more real to me. I felt like I connected with them and came to care about them as they struggled through their issues, just trying to find happiness.
I absolutely love this new side to Laura's writing and I really hope we will be seeing more stories from her at this level. She definitely has a winner on her hands with Playing House.
I am such a huge fan of second chances and those reality tv shows so this new one by Laura Chapman just piqued my interest with Playing House. We have Wilder Aldrich who beneath the city clothes he is still a Texas country boy just wanting to make people happy. Then we have Bailey who wants to have her dreams come true and be a designer not feeling her full potential. I loved how Laura Chapman brought these two together and then have Waverly in the picture creating a tale that we never expected to see. There was so much in this book I thought was going somewhere then Laura put in some twists making me rethink some parts in the book. This is one of those books that is hilarious, second chances and two people seeing what they have really been missing in their lives. Loved it.
"I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own."
I absolutely love how Bailey Meredith is more than content to be on her own; and thought that the setting of the book was pleasantly different. I got an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
First read rating: 4 Second read: 2.5 This book wasn't as good as I thought it was when I first read it two years ago. [More to come when I read through my notes]
Author Laura Chapman takes readers behind the scenes of a popular home improvement/design show, Playing House with Wilder and Waverly, which airs on the fictional television channel Design Network (DN). Local designer Bailey Meredith, cautious by nature, decides to take a risk and accept the offer to join the DN crew for their months-long project in Austin, Texas. When Bailey weighed the pros and cons of the temporary career move, she certainly never expected her heart to be what she would be risking the most. She certainly thought it would be safe from her boss, series’ affable, sexy, and seemingly unavailable co-host Wilder Aldrich. Bailey has enough to juggle with her workload as assistant to the mercurial designer and host, Waverly, without adding lusting over Waverly’s partner.
After years of catering to diva Waverly’s demands, all-around good guy Wilder Aldrich is knocked off his feet by talented and easy-going Bailey. As an easy friendship develops, so too does a strong mutual attraction. Wilder’s personal life is both simpler and more complicated than Bailey realizes. He and Waverly share a past and a present, including a TV show, a successful business, and a four-year old daughter! Finally tired of being a doormat for Waverly and her ambitions, Wilder decides to make his desires a priority, and Bailey is definitely high on his list. Wilder and Bailey share an honest and respectful relationship which is jeopardized by the Network’s machinations and Waverly’s ego. Please note, fear not:
The romance takes place over several months while the Bailey and Wilder live and work in close proximity, so when the potential for sacrifice occurs, the relationship has a solid enough foundation to give the circumstances and consequences some weight. As enjoyable as this story is, I couldn’t help but wish for deeper exploration of Wilder and Bailey, both individually and as a couple. Maybe the passing of weeks at a time outside the narrative gave the relationship enough foundation but not enough color and detail. After all, as any designer knows, it’s all in the details.
Enjoy Wilder and Bailey renovating homes and their hearts, Playing House by Laura Chapman is a fun escape — especially when you can’t watch your favorite design shows since your TV has been commandeered for March Madness!
I’m not nearly as skilled as I’d like to be with a hammer, and have no clue how to decorate, but I love home improvement shows. Which is why the premise of Playing House appealed to me as much as it did. Yet, as often is the case with anything you read by Laura Chapman, there’s more to it than that. So much more.
When it comes to the small screen, we’re only privy to the scenes that are given the green light. How much of it is real can be a toss up. Bailey can only imagine what might be in store for her, in choosing to work for a show that only showcases successful outcomes, never the work that goes on behind the scenes. Given her situation, however, there’s not much choice in the matter. It’s either that, or continue to feel undervalued with her current employer.
And for Wilder, Bailey is like a breath of fresh air. He’s been locked inside deadlines and contractual obligations for so long, he has a hard time imagining what life was like before the show. Before he’d been thrust into a spotlight. Those things don’t apply to Bailey and don’t mean much to her, which only makes her all the more attractive. And, she’s feeling him, too, yet she knows picturing any sort of future with Wilder is totally off-limits. No ifs, and’s or but’s about it.
I really appreciated the honest look at what might potentially go on behind the scenes of a home improvement show. Given some of what I’ve seen in the headlines as of late, I’m guessing it’s not far off. There are plenty of smiles and cordial attitudes to go around, and we can often forget that the people we see on the television are still real people with lives that go on behind the scenes. And sometimes, a scenario is created in order to not only project a certain look or feel to the outside world, but to protect the people we love. I really felt that when Bailey and Wilder are at a loss on how to proceed in their own lives. On finding a way to skirt the line of what’s morally right or wrong.
I’ve read nearly all of Laura’s novels, and while I love them all, there was something particularly special about this one. I really felt a deep emotional connection to the characters and the rough situations they find themselves in. Maybe because I’ve gone through my own tough times, too, and I could relate and identify with Bailey, with Wilder, and even with a few of the others who make life hell for everyone around them. Playing House deserves every single one of the five stars I’ve given it.
You should really just buy this book and read it! I love it and that's enough of a review for you to do as I suggest and read it!! Please !!
Love, Elle
Hmm, Yea I guess that's not going to work! If only it were that easy. I love Laura's books. It's really that simple, I love some more than others but her writing just gets me. Or do I just get her writing? I don't know really but what I do know is that Playing House is adorably amazing and hit me in my interest. I'm decorating challenged and therefore watch what I cannot do. Yes , I watch HGTV and stalk Pinterest to figure out what I don't know, so this book was amazing to me. I usually do a super detailed review of characters and the plot line but I refuse to give away too much about this read.
Meet Bailey Meredith natural-born worrier and ready to take a risk. Bailey is ready to put her talent to use as an Interior Designer and to see her full potential come to fruition so she applies to be an Interior design assistant, it's better than her everyday job as a personal assistant/coffee runner. What happens after that is amazing on its own !!
Wilder is the host of a home improvement show with his co-host Waverly. Wilder is such a good guy who is held down by baggage of the past and present, that baggage seems to get heavier when Wilder sets his on eyes on Bailey and knows he wants her. Waverly is a royal pain in the butt !! In honor of this Texas location for this book lets just say that Waverly is 3 gallons of crazy in a 2 gallon bucket. Yes, I just said that!!
A romance between Bailey and Wilder does develop but not instantly, you get a lot of story with these two and I really happen to like that in this instance. Sometimes it's not just the homes that need a makeover, sometimes its us and the way we live and love in life !!
This book had me smiling and cussing at the same time. There are characters I loved and characters I loved to hate. This book has to be my favorite out of all of Laura's books! If you've happened to have read a Laura Chapman book I can promise that this one is different from any of her others.
For someone who's as obsessed with watching HGTV as I am (I think I've seen every episode of Property Brothers, Flip or Flop, Love It or List It, and Fixer Upper at least three times!), this book is the perfect read. Unlike me, heroine Bailey Meredith is not a fan of home improvement shows, but her talent isn't being utilized at the interior design firm where she works. So, when she's offered a job as assistant to the lead designer on the uber-popular show, Playing House, she knows it's too good of an opportunity to let slip by.
Her boss, Waverly, is a bit of a diva, more concerned with her brand and keeping her cottage industry going than actually doing any work on the show, so Bailey has to pick up the slack for her, which brings her into close contact with the other star of Playing House, hunky contractor Wilder Aldrich. ***BOOK BOYFRIEND ALERT***I was swooning over Wilder the minute he appeared on the page, and the drooling continued all the way to the end of the book. Guys who can fix things are hot, am I right? Plus, Wilder is hard-working, sweet, and self-sacrificing. Sparks fly between Bailey and Wilder, but they both have baggage that make anything more than a fling improbable. How the two of them get together and work through all their issues (both external and internal) is the crux of this story.
In addition to the compelling nature of the Bailey/Wilder relationship, I was fascinated by the behind-the-scenes machinations going on with Playing House throughout the book. Just how "real" is what we see on a reality TV and how far will Waverly, Wilder, and their network go to protect the image they've created? There were no easy answers to the mess the characters found themselves in, and I really felt for just about everybody involved.
Big kudos to the author for knowing her stuff with the home reno details in the book. I can't imagine the amount of research she had to do to get all of that right! There were some very creative twists and turns in the book that I enjoyed, and I appreciated how well-drawn all of the supporting characters were. In fact, I'd love to see some of them pop up in a sequel! A follow-up story starring Waverly would be awesome as I simultaneously hated and got a kick out of her in Playing House and would be really interested to see what happens next in her life.
This book is a must-read for romance and home reno lovers!
