The lights of Rome have dimmed. When the Scorpion and his friends get back to the Holy See, it is a place of fear and death they find, a city cowering under Trebaldi’s boot. Their only chance to destroy the Pope’s power is to heed Rochnan’s last words and look into the past of the Scorpion’s mother. Dodging warrior-monks and Inquisitors, they begin to unravel a story that could yield some answers too horrible to contemplate…
Stephen Desberg is a Belgian writer of comics. In 2010, he was the 10th bestselling author of comics in France, with 412,000 copies of all his comics together sold that year.
A great volume, filled with revelations, swashbuckling adventure and cheesy dialogue. The art was marvelous as ever and the plot remains top-notch -something I'd really like to see turned into a TV series at some point.
Wow, this one was very intense and dark! I called it that Trebaldi was Scorpion’s father, and as I predicted, I knew Scorpion would flip and deny it! But what devil is Trebaldi talking about? Why does Trebaldi hate and fear Scorpion? Well, I guess I’ll have to find out in the next issue. As for Mejai and Scorpion, it definitely looks like their feelings for each other are genuinely starting to show. I like how throughout these series the authors take it slow instead of rushed like so many other works do.

The Scorpion has returned to Rome after the failure to secure Saint Peter’s Cross, and that failure looks as if it has solidified Trebaldi’s position as Pope - an opinion confirmed by the harsh and difficult conditions Trebaldi’s enforcers are inflicting upon the populace. But there is one hope, and that’s for the Scorpion to learn more about the nature of his birth and the reason his mother was burnt at the stake for witchcraft. To achieve this, he, Hussar and Mejai must look for new allies, seek out and confront the grotesque Inquisitor Crecesti, and even boldly tackle Trebaldi himself.
As with uncovering any secret, the answers you seeks aren’t guaranteed to please, and what the Scorpion learns about the nature of his mother’s death are unexpected and unwanted. However, with this new knowledge he decides to seek vengeance and justice, even if it means a dangerous and risky confrontation.
This really is one of Cinebook’s best titles, and that’s saying something when you consider some of the other books they put out. It’s a book rich to bursting with some of the most beautiful and impressive artwork I’ve seen in comics, particularly when it comes to depicting the great houses and the ruins of Rome. It’s lavishly detailed, full of action and adventure, and with a strong characters throughout. Add to this the personal crusade of the Scorpion, the inner-conflicts of Mejai, and the seething, vicious ambitions of Trebaldi and you get a compulsive series that should be sitting on everyone’s reading list.
Having failed to recover the cross from Peter's crucifixion from the Templar's treasure hiding in the previous volume, The Treasure of the Templars The Holy Valley , this fifth album in Cinebook's publishing of writer Stephen Desberg and artist Enrico Marini's series The Scorpion (album #7 Au nom de père in the original French) sees the Scorpion returned to Rome, following up on Rochnan's parting words that the Scorpion's mother might be a key to getting at Pope Trebaldi.
This yet another instalment of good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure with religious conspiracy interwoven for good measure. Marini's art is enjoyable, and Desberg's story remains interesting and fun.
Seventh installment of a nicely done graphic novel about a mysterious 17th century Italian adventurer and the secrets surrounding his origins. In French.
