POINT OF NO RETURN

After seeing firsthand how well-endowed his coworker Baek Youngchan is, Seo Hyunsoo finds himself plagued with the filthiest thoughts imaginable. Clearly the way to rid himself of his insane fantasies is to avoid Youngchan entirely, but Youngchan doesn’t appear to have gotten the memo. No matter where Hyunsoo turns, Youngchan is there, being his annoyingly perky self. When Hyunsoo’s patience runs out and he causes a scene with Youngchan, the two are sent to their shared room to work out their differences…and their mutual attraction becomes undeniable! Can they keep things work-appropriate, or will they end up crossing the line?

This was a delight to read. An insane delight, but a delight none the less. I am a huge fan of the fact that we had, what, three physical fights before they ended up actually having sex? More enemies to lovers stories need to feature this. And biting. God. The bandages and the fighting and the biting and the actual enraged emotions and the biting and the slightly feral look to the art style and the biting... this was made for me...

But okay, putting all of that aside, I am also really into whatever the overarching background plot is. There are so many threads that have been started with all these different characters who each have their own complex background, and there is a larger workplace drama about to take place, and even though I'm a little bit lost, I am hooked and interested in seeing how everything plays out. And I am VERY interested in the impending departments sharing the same space, and what that is going to mean for Seo Hyunsoo.

As for Seo Hyunsoo and Baek Youngchan's relationship, I am not surprised in the slightest that they still have not really spoken to each other, nor am I surprised that they are both working off of misunderstandings and assumptions about the other. It really fits their character types, which I think is what is saving me from being annoyed by it and making me even kind of compelled by it. They are both very school-kid like adults who don't fit in with others, yet who are desperately trying to fit in. It's interesting, and I am very eager to see how they both continue to develop independently and together as they both get to learn more about the other. I also need Seo Hyunsoo to keep biting Baek Youngchan aggressively and violently. For the plot and character development, of course.

"ever since his first day, you've been following him and teasing him like some kinds of an attention seeker"

this retreat arc is SO GOOD i didn't even put the vol down. youngchan keeps on following hyunsoo everywhere like a puppy while hyunsoo is in a dilemma 😭 wherever hyunsoo is, you bet youngchan is in the vicinity. bro is not even sure himself if he's gay but im glad his frustration with youngchan was an eye-opener in a way for him to discover his sexuality.

This review is ultimately a review of volume one and two since I read them in immediate consecutive order. I had not read the webcomic or anything, so I'm just picking this up based on hearing good things about it (my sister told me to read this, so I did, lol).

And, just a heads-up: this isn't a positive review. I don't think this story is awful or even particularly bad, but there are certain things about it that sit really poorly with me that make me unable to give it more than two stars.

The good:

The art is absolutely gorgeous. I love the sketchiness of the line-art; it gives the actions and expressions so much life along with the generally bright colors. The side characters are also super great, and I wish we got to spend more time with Ms Lee and her crazy antics, as well as...I mean, all the female characters, to be honest. They all deserve a spinoff, lol. Plus, office antics/office romance comedies are a favorite trope of mine, and this does better than some comics I have read by having such a large cast of great supporting characters.

The bad:

...I kinda hate the main character? And his constant physical violence against Mr. Baek? I don't think I felt this way about him as strongly in Volume 1, but his behavior became so much more intolerable in this volume. I think Baek is (loveably) obnoxious, but he doesn't deserve to be punched and bitten by a coworker just for being irritating. I guess I can't extend my suspension of disbelief enough to believe that Seo wouldn't be thrown in jail for assault or at least fired by what he does to Baek. Heck, if I was their coworker, I would feel massively uncomfortable and/or unsafe being around someone who could become so violent at the drop of a hat. His withdrawn and thorny personality made sense to me at first, but after a while, it doesn't really excuse the increasing extremes in his behavior. Another point of contention I have with Seo is that he has zero respect for the wishes of his sexual partners (as we saw in Volume 1), and it really doesn't go away here (though you only see it in volume 2 with Baek, and...what else do you expect at that point?)

And speaking of Baek, his later actions in this volume (as I will get to in a moment) make me go from mostly liking him to losing respect for him completely, which really sucks because he's the second main character/the "love" interest and was previously rather endearing in a I'm-glad-I-don't-work-with-that-guy kind of way.

My biggest gripe (aka, why this volume gets only 2 stars):

I HATE how Baek and Seo hook up when Seo is completely wasted. It's gross that Baek takes advantage of Seo's drunkenness. I mean, we the reader know that Seo has constant fantasies about him, but Baek doesn't! Maybe it would be different if he was *also* drunk, but he isn't. What's worse is that Seo hadn't even had a chance to internally acknowledge and accept what he wanted to himself before they got together. As we've seen, he is so determined to suppress his attraction to him, that he lashes out physically to release his pent up emotions. Sober, he would outright refuse Baek--even though he is attracted to him--and he has every right to do so! You can want something desperately and still choose to not engage in it. It just adds an extra layer of discomfort because he can hardly give *himself* consent to feel attraction to Baek, much less give actual, sober consent to Baek.

I understand that his drunkenness is a narrative tool that allows Seo to release his inhibitions and accept what he really wants when he otherwise would deny it, but it still has the literal connotation of lacking true consent. He isn't in his right mind, and he doesn't have a chance to be in his right mind to accept what he wants.

TL;DR: drunkenness = can't consent, and that's icky to me.

NOTE: I do want to mention, I am not bashing anyone who likes this or thought it was hot or whatever. I am pretty sure this is a rather common trope in general. But the way this was executed bothered me a little more than I was expecting (not that I was expecting their hookup to happen like it did all), probably because Seo is still in denial to even himself.

Will I read volume 3 when it comes out? Probably. I think I just need Seo to finally acknowledge his own feelings in order for ME to get any kind of closure from this series.

<< Review made on behalf of chapters 35-69 >>

This series is so silly. I must be eating mango with tajin because the atmosphere is so sweet and spicy. Black Cat Boy x Golden Retriever Boy while also being Enemies to Lovers as a trope is already right up my alley. But this part of the webtoon introduced us to Hyunsoo's good old fashioned ✨️parental neglect and childhold trauma✨️ that has made him abrasive and stand-offish, yet also very capable and independent. I love the direction this series is going in where Hyunsoo's relationship with Youngchan is kind of healing that loneliness that Hyunsoo has built due to his independence. It's a lovely slow burn enemies to lovers where we are witnessing Hyunsoo's emotionals walls chip away bit by bit as he sorts out his emotions; his sexual/romantic budding relationship with Youngchan being the catalyst of it. I'M ALLLL FOR IT. The spicy scenes are growing ever more warm each time they do the nasty.

The authors did such a great job of balancing a story that is both silly, trashy, spicy and deep. The artist absolutely killed it too these chapters though limited to lightsaber coque.

While the storytelling is excellent, I found that it was occasionally hard to figure out who was speaking at which times when multiple characters are present because of the way the speech bubbles are positioned. The overlap of live dialogue with narrated thoughts peppered in between also was confusing. It made it hard to keep track of what was going on. Hence 4.5 stars rounded up to a 5.

This was chaos. Pure chaos. No sanity here 😂

Hyunsoo spends most of this having an existential crisis about his attraction to Youngchan, and it’s absolutely deranged. Let’s just say his sexual fantasies are…intense. The visual of Youngchan with a muzzle, collar, and doggy ears? Uncalled for 😂

Then we have Youngchan who desperately is trying to make Hyunsoo like him and even admits he doesn’t understand why he’s so invested in making sure Hyunsoo gives him the time of day 😂 Just messy.

Both of them are ridiculous men. And that final sex scene? I had to stop myself from cackling with Hyunsoo being like “How the fuck is that shit gonna fit?” But they still made it work 😂👌🏻 Is it questionable that this all happened while Hyunsoo was drunk? Of course, but it also seems like it’s unlikely that he’ll forget that it happened. So, we’ll just leave it at that 🤷🏻‍♀️

Of course, I’m looking forward to continuing this series and learning more about what happened to Hyunsoo in the past at his job.

The end of the company retreat comes with some new friendships, questionable coworkers and a lot of wet dreams. 😏 Hyunsoo is starting to realize his attraction to Youngchan and it drives him crazy. 😂 Later on some office politics or sabotage is going to take place but it doesn’t hold my interest very long because the mystery is dragging out. 🙄 we do get a mystery person at Younchan’s place and then another company dinner. We then get a drunk Hyunsoo and we all know what happens next with Youngchan. 😏😏😏 cliffhanger and now we wait for book three. 😩

Well they finally have sex, but apparently this author wants the main character to bottom.... yeah, after seeing the love interest's dick size, I think most would say that is a mistake in gay relationships. Definitely NOT realistic, although the reactions are somewhat realistic. A lil conflicted over this. Unsure what happens after this, because the main character was drunk when he did this, so not exactly consenting for the circumstances. Yet I'm sure stuff like this happens. So I'm curious what happens after this. My biggest question is... will he remember?

Reading this now really just make me baffled at how I managed to avoid this until now.

No notes, really. I'm learning to understand that many BLs simply do not know how to write chemistry between their pairs, because even though this is pretty sex-positive and upfront about it, I am not immediately turned off like with many other stories that attempt the same.

Baek is best boy, but Seo???? My beloved.

The second book was better than the first. The bickering was better but it very confused cause sometimes it was just light then other they drew it out. Like make up your mind and have that choose be drawing it out. I live how baek is like both a golden retriever but also a damn Rottweiler. And seo is just a grumpy black cat that has a traumatic past I need to know about

Honestly what is going on lol. I don't really understand Baek Youngchan's character. I'm not sure I like this series that much, but I just want to see what happens so I keep reading.
