I’m deathly afraid of dogs, so why am I signing up to volunteer at an animal shelter?
When my therapist sends me to the newly opened Safe Haven Animal Rescue to get up close to a dog in a safe environment, my nerves almost get the best of me in the lobby. But a run-in with a handsome employee makes putting up with the terror worth it. I’m so besotted, that before I know it, I’m signing up to be a volunteer at the shelter.

Crushing hard on my first volunteer is not a good way to start my new job as a volunteer coordinator.
When he starts flirting with me, I shut him down despite his pushing all my buttons. Yet the more time we spend together, the more my crush deepens, and the more I regret staying so professional. But even if I do jump despite the consequences, will he still be interested when he finds out I’m trans?
Ruff Start is a slow-burn gay romance novel between a work-a-holic corporate professional and a laid back artist who needs to learn when to ask for help.
My urban fantasy novels mainly feature the trans and queer protagonists grappling with things like identity and found families that I wished I could have read about growing up.
When not writing, you can probably find me beating up pixel baddies or in front of one of my sewing machines adding to my overstuffed closet or my army of homemade plush dolls.
If you find yourself blinded by the vivid colors and loud patterns of my homemade shirts, know that I’m only trying to warn you that I may be poisonous. Or venomous? Or both? Probably both.
I escaped from the bowels of Utah (namely Provo) and now live in the sunny Pacific Northwest United States.
**I received this book free as an early reader. All thoughts are my own and I enjoyed it so much I preordered a copy**
This was so cute! Second book for me in the Gaynor Beach Animal Rescue, and I’ve enjoyed all of them. MC with a fear of dogs volunteers at an animal shelter to help with his anxiety and also because of the other cute guy. Fluffy (haha literally), sweet, and overall fun. Trans MC with great rep. I would recommend!
OK, other than that jarringly quick jump to the epilogue, this was a cute story that fit right in with the others in this series. I didn't read the blurb, so there were a few surprises to keep me invested enough to see this story through to the end!
As always, I think we all need a bit of "fluff" in our stories from time to time and this one came with extra fluff from Princess Bubblegum and Princess Fluffybutt!!! 🤣🤣🤣
MM romance with dogs and cats. One guy is afraid of small dogs after an attach. He's attracted to another guy who's his supervisor at a volunteer position, and who also worries he'll be rejected for being trans. It all works out in the end. Typos: a few wrong words, a wrong character name, continuity error.
Ruff Start: WOW! Very interesting take on over coming fear! Sawyer went in to the shelter to see how he did with his fear of dogs! Then he met Neil and could keep his eyes off of him. Then ended up agree to volunteering. It was a great story and amazing dialogl
