A tragic story with a desperate message, when I started reading, I was instantly captivated by the story of Apryl Truman. This writing was beautifully structured, interconnecting Apryl’s life with the mythology behind constellations. To an extent it is a love story, for Peyton was the one to take Apryl to see the stars. It was Peyton who taught Apryl the story of Corvus the raven, this novel’s name sake. Remember that it is the raven, Corvus, with its scorched wings that brought us access to the sweetness of figs. Don’t be quick with assumptions. The raven too has its story. Just like Apryl, Corvus too lost everything based on misplaced judgments. Though a devastating read, the devastation of it is what makes this read important. In her writing, Brochu begs for a better world where people get treated right. This story is told about loss and hardships, but also a story of love and compassion. It’s a story of self reflection. What are your biases? What are your truths. For everyone who’s ever been hurt, it asks you to truly see yourself. Look at how far you’ve come! You’re still making progress, but where are you now? Where am I now? I don’t know, but where ever I go, I’ll bring Corvus with me. In my head. In my heart. In my backpack. Congratulations Maya Brochu!!! 1000000/10 would recommend
This story was depressing but well written. I liked the theme with the raven that Brochu weaved throughout. Riley was also a compelling character, as was Trinity(these storylines were well done). I was intrigued Apryl’s relation with Peyton, but I also would’ve liked to see more of her character. Apryl’s growth as the story went on was solid. The one character would’ve liked to see more expansion on was Silas. Compared to all the other well rounded characters, he stuck out a bit to me. Obviously from Apryl’s perspective she might not be able to see much of his complexity, but I think a little more on his character(even just hinted at, doesn’t have to be explained away) could add an extra layer of depth to the story; where does the degree of his hate come from? What is his reasoning for his hate, and what is the truth hidden within?
Overall well done.
To Maya Brochu: I wonder when you’ll see this! Sorry it took me so long to finally leave my review. You are an AMAZING writer and I can’t wait to read your next story. Hope you have an amazing summer :)
