A grieving doctor and a nurturing professor join forces on a potentially groundbreaking medical study that sparks a profound connection neither saw coming in this unconventional romantic drama, perfect for fans of Briana Cole, Tia Williams, Kennedy Ryan, and Mary B. Morrison. Dr. Dresden Xavier moved his family back to his hometown of Monroe City after an unfortunate tragedy. Searching for an escape from the reality of grief and depression, Dresden buries himself in a grueling medical research project that could yield life-changing results. What was supposed to be a short-term partnership with the Professor of Nursing at Monroe University, quickly morphs into a case study of love… or maybe just an experiential error. Harper Kingsley, a loving wife, mother, and professor, was not only seeking tenure but a little peace and happiness in her fast-paced life. In the public eye, Harper is a poised perfectionist, but behind closed doors, she desperately fights to mend the broken threads of her feeble family. Lies, sickness, and secrets that could destroy her family permeate her soul until the healing touch of Dr. Xavier changes her trajectory. What was supposed to be a clinical research assignment evolves into something much greater and beyond their control.
Hey Loves! I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri (in the words of Nelly, “I’m from the Lou and I’m proud!) with incredible parents and two amazing older sisters. Born Stacey Renee, I was the baby of the bunch and always had a vivid imagination – was wise beyond my years (to grown for my own good) if you ask my mother!
My love for talking too much (ha!), journaling, daydreaming, reading & watching various genres of movies, books I went to journalism school, determined to become Oprah! After finishing my degree, I did everything but becoming a journalist. I dishonored my childhood dreams of being in some form of entertainment but found a way to use this big mouth for good in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space.
I rekindled my love for reading and writing during the 2020 pandemic where my alter ego & pen name, Robbi Renee was born. Robbi is my daddy’s nickname so my pen name pays homage to him. (Yep! I’m still a daddy’s girl!) Renee, as you can see is my middle name – Robbi Renee!
I started Love Notes by Robbi Renee as an outline to release all of the stories that live in my head. I was challenged to write and publish my first novella, French Kiss Christmas, published December 2020.
Robbi Renee draws upon personal experiences with life and love. My written works are inspired by my adoration for Black love, and stories of romance, heartache, trauma, intuition, and redemption.
Stacey/Robbi Renee enjoys her own Black family love story with her husband George and teenage son.
“Somebody’s Husband” ARC Review. Release Date: December 24, 2024
Everyone who knows me knows I’m a super fan of Somebody’s Wife. So I was eager to get to this one based off my love for the previous books.
I was glad to be back in Monroe City at our favorite HBCU. The story opened up with familiar places and new faces. Dr. Dresden Xavier and professor Harper Kingsley were beautiful people with caring spirits dealing with the most unimaginable grief someone could experience at their young ages. This one was heavy and filled with grief.
The internal conflicts Dresden had with his Rosie, doing what’s right and moral at his job, and his newfound desire for Harper was my favorite part of this story. Harper’s heart was so big and pure. I’m not sure a lot of people could’ve done what she did for her friend.
Together, I loved Dresden and Harper but it was hard for me to connect with them individually. I think I wanted to see more of them individually without their spouses being the center of who they were.
The last 20% of the book was BEAUTIFUL everything we read at 80%, I just wish we started getting that part of the book earlier. The last few pages left me saying “I wanted to read THAT! Oh, that’s what happened? I would’ve loved to read about it.” I was thirsty for those stories that we didn’t get to experience.
I would still recommend this book and inform readers to check trigger warnings because it is a VERY heavy topic and things do happen on page.
Thank you Black Odyssey Media and NetGalley for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. ✨Grief/Loss ✨Slowest of Burns ✨40+ MMC & FMC
Omg omg omg. I went into this book with such high expectations, and it delivered on every aspect. It's rare for a book to pull tears out of me, but this one managed to do just that. Dresden's grief was so heavy; I wanted nothing but to help him carry that burden. He experienced a loss so great, all the while still dealing with his responsibilities, like his children and career, exceptionally well. When he met Harper, he felt something he'd never expected to feel again--"a boom" in his chest, something he'd only experienced with one person before.
Harper had the world on her shoulders, but no one was stronger than she was. She was the definition of selfless. Both laden with grief and hurt, Dresden and Harper were surprised by their attraction to each other, which unsettled both of their spirits.
Robbie wrote the hell out of this book. It was real, raw, emotional, and everything good in between. The character development, plot, and dialogue were riveting. This book was just so well-written. I dreaded the end, but I also couldn't wait for the end because I was anticipating this well-deserved happily ever after. Well done, Robbie.
This book is an absolute masterpiece. If you're looking for a beautiful, touching story that will move you deeply, read this. 10/10
3.5 stars rounded up. I don’t tend to read romance books but there was something in the blurb for Somebody’s Husband by Robbi Renee that made me want to read this one. It was my first book that I have read by Robbi Renee. I like the way she addressed some very difficult subjects. The characters that she created were flawed yet quite likable. I listened to the audiobook of Somebody’s Husband that was very well narrated by Dylan Ford. I wasn’t prepared for the explicit language that was used to describe some sexual desires or acts of intimacy that the main characters experienced throughout the book. I don’t consider myself a prude or anything close to that but I found some of the language offensive and crude. It took away from my total enjoyment of the book. That factored into my rating of this book as well because the overall plot rated higher in my opinion.
Dr. Dresden Xavier had the perfect life until he didn’t. He had married the love of his life, had a beautiful home, twin daughters and very successful career as a doctor. Then his Rosie was diagnosed with a terminal disease. Nothing could save her, not even all his knowledge as a doctor, his passionate love for her, his endless prayers nor his desire for her to live. When Rosie died, Dresden made the decision to move to Monroe City. Living in Monroe City would give Dresden and his twin daughters the family support they all needed. This was where Dresden had grown up and his parents and sister still lived there. He found a position at the local hospital. They were beginning a clinical trial for colon cancer patients and asked Dresden to head the medical research project. Dresden gladly accepted the position and challenge. He felt that by submerging himself in his work completely he would be able to handle his grief and loss better, at least temporarily. His twin daughters would begin college soon so he hoped that everything that he had put in place would help him to cope the best that he could.
Professor Harper Kingsley was a professor of nursing at Monroe University. She had worked very hard to get where she was. Harper’s life had not always been easy. She had been met with several challenges throughout her life. While Harper attended college, she worked as a waitress at a diner in order to help her pay for education. During this time, Harper discovered that she was pregnant and totally on her own. A young truck driver who often ate at the diner took a liking to Harper. Every time he ate at the diner he made sure that he ate in the section Harper was serving. They formed a friendship over time. Eventually the two married but it did not last. They had grown their family to include two sons but they divorced yet remained best friends. When Harper’s ex-husband was diagnosed with colon cancer, Harper became his caregiver. Her ex-husband moved back into Harper’s house and she and their two sons took care of him. It was a sad yet trying time for all of them.
Professor Harper Kingsley was asked to join the medical research project that Dr. Dresden Xavier was heading. She was seeking tenure in her position at the University where she taught and this project would definitely help with her pursuit of that. Harper was not prepared though for the instant attraction she had for Dr. Xavier. How could he make her feel this way? She hadn’t had feelings like she was feeling ever before. Was Dr. Xavier attracted to Harper as well? Would his grief and guilt affect his feelings? The more they found themselves together the harder it was to deny what was happening between them and what they were both feeling. The question was what they were going to do about it. Somebody’s Husband did a great job of exploring grief, loss, parenting issues, family and second chances. Be prepared to cry and laugh. The ending of this book was very emotional, touching and satisfying. I recommend this book for those of you who believe in second chances.
Thank you to RB Media for allowing me to listen to the audiobook of Somebody’s Husband by Robbi Renee through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I struggled to read this book. It took me a LONG time to really get into. I was finding myself wanting the “build up” to be over with and get to the page turning good stuff. But it never really came. I expected more. The 3rd person threw me off most of the time. This was a story about finding love again while grieving loss. There were definitely some sad parts in the book. I enjoyed Somebody’s Wife more but overall this was an okay story. Dresden x Harper ❤️
Life is a thrilling rollercoaster, filled with challenges that can feel insurmountable. After the heartbreaking death of his beloved wife, Nina, he decides to return to his roots in Monroe City, determined to give his twin daughters a fresh start while escaping the weight of his grief. Just when things start to feel like they might be settling, life throws him a curveball—he finds himself drawn to a charismatic teammate, igniting feelings he thought he’d never experience again. Get ready for a mesmerizing journey filled with heart, hope, and the potential for love to bloom amidst life's chaos!
Unfortunately it’s a no for me. I’m so sad cause I love “Somebody’s wife” so much. But this was just not it. To be 73% into a romance book with little to no romance is wild. Call it women’s fiction with a dash of romance which is not what I was looking for The way she deals with lost was beautiful. the story being told in 3rd person and then switching POVs so much including side characters and sometimes a new pov starts in the middle of a paragraph. Made this sometimes hard to follow along with. The audiobook guy didn’t help has he kept the same tone and boredom in his voice for everyone. This just wasn’t for me sadly The lack of a real friendship (which is what the characters should have had) or any real interaction with each other made the actual “romance” feel forced as well. Yes they were sexually attracted to each other but that’s all the vibes I got. Idk this one just fell flat for me.
First of all Ms. Robbi Renee knows how to write! I have read so many of her books and she never disappoints.
𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲'𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 was soooooo good. It is a story of love, lost, grief, healing, and second chances. The writing was superb and I loved how the author took her time to develop the characters. This was done in such an exceptional manner that I was able to feel their pain and grief. I am not a big crier when it comes to reading but I was crying like a baby when reading this. And don't get me wrong, I cried because I could see myself in the characters. They were so real and went through real emotions and had to make real life, tough decisions. It was just incredible to see and read. Like I said before, and I will continue to say, the writing was superb! I loved Harper and Dresden's story. These two went through so much in their lives and I really liked how the author did not just make everything sunshine and rainbows. This made the characters relatable and realistic and it also helped in making the plot more real and enjoyable.
Another thing I will note is, like some people, I don't usually like stories told in 3rd person but again, Ms. Renee just knows what she is doing. This writing style was necessary for the story. It allowed the reader not to only get the FMC and MMC's story but to also get into the mind of some of the secondary characters. There is so much more I loved about the book but I do not want to ruin it for you with spoilers. All I can say is read it, you will not be disappointed.
I highly recommend 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲'𝐬 𝐇𝐮𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝. You will cry...a lot, but you will also laugh and rejoice at the end.

Both Dresden and Harper were put together by fate, to battle against the painful loss of loved ones, unknowingly sharing a mind blowing connection.
I love the medical trials they both worked on. Made the story super interesting. Hysterical how their children met, not knowing the relationship between their parents! I loved Nina's sense of humor, even when she knew the end was near, yet wanted Dres to find love again!
Robbi Renee is fabulous at writing love stories that tug at your heart while making you contemplate, and Somebody's Husband was no different. In this story we meet Dr. Dresden Xavier, a widower with two daughters who's still battling with the loss of his wife, and Professor Harper Kingsley, a mother of two who's struggling with caring for her ex-husband after his cancer diagnosis. Harper and Dresden immediately feel an attachment to one another, and the pull to be in each other's orbit is strong, but grief and guilt are heavy burdens that are constantly getting in the way of their budding relationship.
I really enjoyed this story. It's a slow burn because both Harper and Dresden are both dealing with so much, but in that time you really get to understand the grief and anguish they both are feeling. Dresden was really bae. He was so understanding, and even when he did something wrong, he took action to correct himself, and I loved that. Harper was so strong, and I truly loved the way she and Dresden communicated in this book. Robbie Renee did such an excellent job highlighting not only the couple's feelings but also how grief affects the children and how healing is a continuous journey. What a wonderful story.
Whew I had no idea this book would hit me the way that it did! I was boohoo crying at times because it was heartbreaking but beautiful at the same time. I absolutely loved Dr. Dre and reading about his journey to love. Dresden's struggle with grieving his wife and moving on was felt throughout the entire book. This had me rooting even harder for him and Harper. I enjoyed the way they slowly progressed from coworkers to friends then lovers. The way he saw Harper had me swooning. I was not expecting Harpers story to be so heartbreaking. I loved the relationship between Dresden and his daughters. I wish we got more of Harper and her boys though. Despite this book being heavy and filled with more grief than I thought it would have I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a beautiful story of two people finding love after loss.
I wasn't expecting this from this book, yeah i thought it would be a play off on the 1st book but hey hey hey, this book was chef's kiss. Grieving and healing themselves back to love. They way these two people came together experiencing some of the same expects is just heart meltinging to me. but when she said she can't complete with a ghost, I felt that.
Alright Robbi, you have done it again! I knew it would be a slow burn. I knew it would be emotional. However, I didn't anticipate being all in my feelings during the highs and lows of this read. Whew!
Dr. Dresden Xavier loved his wife something serious. So, when he lost her, he lost a huge piece of himself. The difficulty of moving on was unbearable and sometimes impossible for Dresden. But he knew that he had to take care of his girls, and continue his research, things that he knew would make Nina proud. Moving home was bittersweet knowing that he had family to lean on. However, this move would be lifechanging in more ways than one.
Professor Harper Kingsley loves her career and educating young minds. It's just that her home life is in shambles. Dealing with an unorthodox situation to help her friend, her sons having a hard time dealing with an impending loss, and she is left to manage it all. When does she get a break? Who is there to assist her with it all? She does her best, but the stress of it all is wearing her down.
When she joins a medical trial team at the university, all she thinks about is getting tenure, until she sees who is leading the team. Dr. Feelgood is in the building and Harper is lusting at first sight. 😂 When Harper barges into the first team meeting a bit late, Dresden is stunned speechless. His heart is racing and forgets that he is running a meeting. What the hell is wrong with me? I have not had this reaction to a woman like this since Nina. But who is this beauty in front of me?
Both Dresden and Harper are dealing with heavy issues weighing them down. However, their attraction is front and center and can't be ignored. Although they dance around the issue for some time, they finally succumb to the passion that they have felt since day one. As they navigate grief, loss, and raising children; they find smiles, happiness, and love. Dresden was so calculating, and intentional about all he did, once he was able to reconcile his feelings. Harper was kind, patient, and understanding as she knew how deeply Dresden loved. She hoped that one day she would get to experience that love as well. A beautiful read. 👍🏾👍🏾
Now we need somebody's sons story next. Hassan definitely needs a story. But, back to the parents. Doctor McHottie was and sounded like a man to have and to hold, with his BDE persona. Dr. Dresden and Harper had a chemistry I could feel from my sofa. It sizzled and crackles anytime they were together. I was sad about Terrance, but I wasn't mad about how things changed for him in the end. I wish I could be as compassionate as Dresden's Rose. She was unlike any other wife I know. It took a while for Harper and Dresden to get to their Somebody's state of being someone's love. 5+ stars....
* Audiobook Review* ARC Review First I would like to thank Robbi Renee, Net Galley and Black Odyssey for this advanced copy.
Imagine being a single dad after 20 years of marriage with college age twin girls. Your heart is still with your late wife but you instantly feel a pull towards a soon to be colleague who works at your daughter’s school. You feel so conflicted because you never thought about moving on but you can’t deny the attraction. Once you make up your mind to pursue her you’re hit with a curve ball of her ex husband of whom she is still taking care of in the mist of his sudden illness. He decided to be a friend but she still couldn’t ignore his feelings so he allowed time to work in his favor. The narration of this audiobook was good. However, I do wish that there was female voice for the female character. Dylan’s voice kind of threw me off a bit but it also made me chuckle when he did his Impression of Mya Angelou. I think this was written very well and in true Robbie Renee fashion she will have you engulfed with her words and you will enjoy casual banter of the characters .
I was gonna give this a 4.5, just as I did with 'Somebody's Wife', BUT the negative about this book was the pacing of the ending. The conflict felt thrown in as if the author forgot that there was a major plot point to touch on; it felt very rushed. I wish it was introduced earlier as the third act 'conflict/break-up' rather than a hiccup that is quickly resolved.
Other than that, I love the depth this story and narrative had, its characters, and the Black excellence/Black love I got to read!
wow… where do i begin. the fact that i feel like they Dres and Harper were MEANT to be together. it definitely was a trauma bond however they understood each other so delicately. i dont even like slow burns (im a spicy gal) but man the built up suspense between the two characters was 😍😍…man
This is, without a doubt, the best of the three. I cried real tears reading this book. Some might say it’s a slow burn, and I wouldn’t disagree, but I enjoyed seeing the slow love blossom between Harper and Dresden. Their complicated situations warranted the slowness. Loved it!!
I didn’t expect to shed a tear reading this book. Somebody’s Husband was so good. Robbi Renee did a good job in showing us how both Harper and Dresden navigate through grief.
I struggled to get through this and contemplated sending it to the dnf file a few times. The story was long and drawn out. It could have easily been shortened. Took me a while to even figure out what was going on or who was who.
The narration didn't help. This was done by a single narrator but could have greatly benefited from duel narrators. Dylan Ford's monotone performance made the story boring. There was no emotion, especially during the few intimate scenes. Speaking of which, the romance doesn't begin to happen until around 65% in. Majority of the book is spent reflecting on Harper's failed marriage and her caring for her dying ex-husband and Dresden morning his deceased wife.
While I appreciate the importance of the author tackling the subjects of grief, loss, and caring for a dying family member, these topics were the main focus of the story and the romance was more of an afterthought and felt rushed. If this were categorized as women's fiction that would make sense. But given this is a romance I expected that to be the focus and the heavy topics being dealt with as Dresden and Harper navigate their relationship.
Unfortunately, the story and narration did not meet my expectations.
I received an audioARC from NetGalley and Recorded Books in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks Net Galley and Black Odyssey Media for the ARC. This book was so beautifully written and I loved every minute of it. The way Robbi touched on love after grief was amazing. I loved reading about characters that were 40+ and dealing with navigating through grief love and also nurturing their children. This book literally pulled my heart strings and was a great addition to this series!
Happy release day First of all, I’d love to thank #NetGalley & @robbierenee for an advance readers copy of this delicious audiobook! This book follows Dr. Dresden Xavier & Professor Harper Kingsley, 2 40+ year olds…(How refreshing to read a love story about grown folks!!!) I went into this book, expecting a similar story to Somebody’s Wife . Imagine my surprise when the vibe was completely different. This story shows how 2 people navigate through their personal journeys of grief. I felt like I was watching a black love story from the 90’s (i.e Love Jones, Boomerang, Brown sugar) or a version of the iconic Living Single, or Girlfriends. There was a palpable sexiness that came across between Dre & Harper from their first encounter. And, it’s a SEXY SLOW BURN!!! Please pick up “Somebody’s Husband” you definitely won’t regret it! Ohhhh, and there’s NO 3rd act breakup!!! Okay-byyyyye
I went into this book blind because I am a Robbi Renee Stan. Robbi always writes a good story but I was missing the romance in this one. This book was way more emotionally taxing than I typically prefer, I cried a couple times and found myself choked up quite a bit. But I did miss the swoon worthy, sexy romance I’ve come to expect from her work. I just didn’t get enough of the FMC & MMC falling and being in love.
4.25 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ .25 stars!! Thank you to NetGalley for the ALC. This story follows Harper, a divorced mom of two boys, who still lives with her ex-husband, Terrance, due to his illness. Dresden, a widowed father of twin girls working in the medical field, is still healing from the loss of his wife to cancer.
Their paths cross when Dresden oversees a special research project, and Harper becomes part of his team. As they work together, their connection deepens, offering them both a second chance at love while navigating the weight of grief.
If you enjoy heartfelt romances with open-door spice and themes of healing, this story is a must-read. It’s a beautiful tale of two people rediscovering love amidst their pain. I absolutely loved it!
