The Deal Maker

Rate this book
Sometimes the best deals are made when hearts collide.

Maggie Dean is determined to leave her past behind and start fresh in Willow Cove, running a charming candy store with her cousin Hope. But life next door to Duke Jacobson, a slick timeshare salesman, is anything but sweet. Duke’s business and his seemingly carefree attitude rub Maggie the wrong way, sparking daily clashes.

When the town organizes a scavenger hunt, fate—or perhaps a mischievous matchmaker—pairs Maggie and Duke together. Over the course of two weeks, they must join forces to complete challenging tasks, each hoping to win the coveted grand prize.

As they navigate the twists and turns of the scavenger hunt, Maggie and Duke uncover more than just clues. Hidden beneath their bickering are layers of untold stories and shared dreams. With every task, they inch closer to understanding each other, and the sparks of annoyance begin to transform into something much stronger.

Britney Mills was born in Utah but parts of her heart lie in Boston, Washington D.C. and Germany. Her love of writing began with the third grade book her teacher assigned her to write and she spent hours hidden behind her mother’s couch writing pages and pages about knights and castles.
Most of her time consists of taking care of her young son and triplets but writing keeps her sane as she travels along on the adventures of characters to come.
When she’s not mothering, writing or reading, she’s probably out playing a sport, going on a hike, or binge watching some kind of murder mystery show. She is a fan of chick flicks and adventure/action stories in books and movies, and can even get her cowboy husband to watch along with her.

“Why can’t I seem to steer clear of Duke? The guy is wearing me down with every interaction and I can’t let that happen.”

Maggie and Duke have the ultimate enemies-to-love story here in the coastal town of Willow Cove. She is a strong and independent woman, determined to make a new start for herself by running a candy shop with her cousin, who is now suddenly getting married. She’s so wary of neighboring storefront owner, Duke, and his slippery salesman job, but a local scavenger hunt teams them up and all bets are off.

Their interactions are spark-filled, first with irritation and then with chemistry, but I think my very favorite thing about this book, aside from the attraction, is the way these characters began to truly see one another. Much like an onion, this event peels away many layers to each character’s personality and Maggie is able to understand why Duke is so flighty and can’t settle down, while Duke recognizes Maggie’s reasons for her ice cream personality test. I love a character driven romance and this one hit the spot.

I loved getting to know these two better and the cameos from previous couples in the series was the cherry on top. Pull out all the sweets, because this delicious tale will make you crave them. Many thanks to the author for the review copy.

I had a lot of fun with Maggie and Duke! Maggie was a bit stubborn, had trouble expressing her feelings and was struggling with some of the sudden changes in her life. She truly cared about the people in her life and I loved her and Hope’s friendship. They were cousins, but in many ways more like sisters. I loved how they supported and pushed one another. Maggie’s past hurts had left her wary, especially with someone like Duke. I enjoyed seeing her pushed out of her comfort zone and opening up. She could be a bit in her head and definitely had her opinions!
Duke was struggling with his place and purpose. He was not where he wanted to be. He was more light-hearted than Maggie, and drew her out of her shell. But he had to get over his own worries and concerns about the future. Honestly, he is the kind of character I enjoy as a character, but probably wouldn’t befriend in real life. Both of them had expectations from their families and even from themselves about what they should be and how their futures would be.
It was a lot of fun to read about the challenges that Maggie and Duke had to do. It forced them to spend time together and allowed them to connect in different ways. This is a sweet romcom with some innuendos and only kissing.

I absolutely loved this cute, closed door small town romance! The candy, ice cream, seafood, and sand castles on the beach gave me all the summer vibes and made the perfect romcom setting.

I loved watching Maggie and Duke learn to be vulnerable and help each other grow out of their comfort zones. Their individual goals and struggles make them feel very relatable, which made me cheer for them even more. PLUS their banter is amazing!

The karaoke duet and flash mob scenes were a couple of my favorites.

Overall a very fun and lighthearted read! Definitely recommend this one for all romance lovers!

This summer series is just so fun and getting to know Maggie and Duke was a sweet scoop of double chocolate brownie. Neighbor business owners do not make them friends, but as they work together in the town’s scavenger hunt, they find friendship. Loved how they worked through their very real problems. Swoony and fun!

“Because from the minute I heard you talk about your ice cream theory personality test, I’ve been intrigued by you, Maggie. Having fun and connecting with you is something I look forward to every day. I really like you.”

The Deal Maker is the 4th book in the Coastal Kisses (Sweet Coastal) series, and can be read as a stand-alone but this series is fun within this charming beach town. This is a quick summertime read with just the right amount of tension to make the romance even sweeter. I enjoyed seeing Maggie and Dean not hit things off at well at first in this story. It took time and effort, when forced to work together, for them both to get past insecurities, and help bring out the best in each other. I enjoyed seeing Maggie and Duke support each other and to discover they have more in common. The chemistry between the two of them was my favorite. This is heartwarming story is worth the quick but, lovely read! 📚🙌🏻☺️

I received this as an ARC and I absolutely devoured it! This is part of another perfect summer series, i love how interconnected the characters are! Maggie runs the candy store with her cousin and is quite skeptical of Duke who sells timeshares. We have the perfect enemies to lovers as they take part in a friendly town competition! Throw in some ice cream personality theory and I was eating it up! I wonder what Maggie would think of my love for Cotton Candy ice cream

Fun story

I absolutely loved how Maggie viewed Duke’s timeshare job, the evilest evil to hunt older people. That being said I am a timeshare owner and I love it. I love Duke’s goals to travel and explore. They seemed like such opposites on paper. But together they really brought out the best of each other. The whole book was fun. I loved the scavenger hunt aspect of the story. It was the way that Maggie and Duke were forced to spend time together. Overall I felt like this was a really great story.
Rating: G/PG, clean, wholesome, no language. Had some issues in it like feelings of abandonment by exs, parental displeasure.

This was such a fun and cute book by @britneymmillsauthor ! I haven't read the other books in the series, and I didn't feel lost at all. I loved Maggie and her Candy Jar shop and Duke trying to figure out why Maggie disliked him so much. The scavenger hunt and the ice cream scale were so fun and I liked how they both were used throughout the whole book.

I love when books mention my favorite movies! Father of the Bride is a classic and I love the scene that Britney referred to.

Tropes:
- enemies to lovers (one sided)
- forced proximity
- FMC business owner
- coastal small town

Thanks to @britneymmillsauthor for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own

When I first heard about there being a book about a candy store owner – my inner child got giddy as a clam!  I still love my sweets, but in moderation!  But how cool, that must be one of coolest jobs I have ever heard about!  Pair that with a man, who is employed in the line of work she seems to despise the most… it makes for a great story!

Maggie is all business and minimal fun!  Recently have experienced some major life upheaval, she has come back to Willow Cove, her home away from home (at least during her childhood summers) to start a new business venture with her cousin, Hope!  Very quickly, a flash mob and scooping up an ice cream turns her new safety net for a complete loop!  Neither of which she saw coming, which only adds to the craziness!

Duke is a man on a mission… to find his calling!  Having recently opened a business of his own, he sets out to help anyone who’s willing listen to a presentation, find the ideal timeshare for them!  While it might not be the most ideal line of work, the perks of being able to receive free travel helps him keep his eyes on the prize!  Through a bit of an unusual circumstance, he gets sucked into a tourism generating scavenger hunt with Maggie!  Duke finds her intriguing, while she finds him annoying!

The push/pull of these two protagonists is so fun to read!  Duke learns that one doesn’t just simply pick a flavor of ice cream without it meaning something!  Maggie learns that the job doesn’t define the person, but it’s what’s on the inside that really matters!  As you read, occasional characters that appear in the other “Coastal Kisses” books and helps to and a new layer of depth to this story!  Also the dog lover in me, can’t help but love the sudden arrival of Champ!  This book was all that and a waffle cone on the beach!

The Deal Maker by Britney M. Mills is book 4 in the Coastal Kisses multi author series but can be read as a standalone. I absolutely adored this book. It is told from a dual POV, Maggie Dean and Duke Johnson. Maggie co-owns The Candy Jar with her cousin, Hope, where you can fulfill all your candy and ice cream needs. Sounds like the ultimate dream job to me. Next door to the Candy Jar, Duke opens up a shop selling timeshare to hopefully one day help him travel. Maggie has some big and not so good feelings about Duke and his timeshare business. Maggie's grandmother was taken advantage of by a timeshare company and passed away not long after. That history does not make out for friendly neighbors, at least on Maggie's side. Willow Coves mayor decided to set up a whole town scavenger hunt with the grand prize being a free trip or $5000 cash. Everyone who enters gets matched up into two people teams to compete the scavenger hunt. Maggie & Duke get paired up to be teammates, much to Maggie's dismay. Maggie and Duke's interactions were great. I absolutely adored the characters. This was the perfect summer read.

🍦Maggie's Ice Cream Theory
✈️ One Sided Enemies to More
🍭 Flash Mob
🧳 He Falls First
🍦 The Scavenger Hunt
✈️ Karaoke duet
🍭 Sandcastle Building
🧳 The Banter!!

I didn’t know I was going to be getting a psychological evaluation on my ice cream choices today, but okay.

I don’t need to impress my partner by any means, so I might as well look homeless to reduce the chance of attraction. Not that there will be any from either party.

If someone had told me that within a few days I’d be excited to be waking up to work on a scavenger hunt with Duke, I would’ve laughed in their faces.

I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Maggie & Duke’s points of view

– it is very briefly mentioned that a side character has endometriosis

Review:

I loved getting to know Maggie & Duke! They were a fun pair and I loved their love/hate-ish relationship. I loved that they were work neighbors and could easily talk to one another if they wanted to (Maggie didn’t exactly & Duke was all for it). I also loved the addition of a scavenger hunt that forced them to work together! It was interesting to see what sort of activities they’d have to do around town. I loved that there was also Maggie wanting to be happy for her cousin’s upcoming nuptials, but was still suffering/grieving how her own last relationship went down. It was fairly easy to connect with her (emotionally) even though I haven’t even had a relationship to grieve in that way. Just the aspect of trying to be happy for someone who is at that step while it feels like you are a few ‘behind’ so to speak was easy to connect with.

Summary:

Maggie ran to Willow Cove to start up her dream candy shop with her cousin and escape the mistakes of her past. But when her cousin gets engaged, Maggie’s life is turned upside down. What will happen to the new normal that she’s cultivated since leaving home? It doesn’t help that their work neighbor is a timeshare salesman named Duke who can’t stick to his own shop. And unfortunately, when the town announces a scavenger hunt and Maggie enters, she finds herself paired with the last person she’d want: Duke.

Duke loves the idea of travelling and hopes to do more of it when he’s gained enough of a cushion to do so. In the meantime, he loves talking with people who come to Willow Cove about all the places he dreams of visiting by selling them timeshares. But not everyone likes him it seems. His work neighbor, Maggie, can’t stand when he’s around and he can’t figure out why. When a chance to jumpstart his travels comes in the form of a scavenger hunt prize, Duke jumps at the chance to participate. And when he discovers that he’s been paired with Maggie, Duke knows it won’t go over well for her, but he still hopes that he can get to know her better and bury whatever hatchet she holds against him…

This is another installment in the Coastal Kisses (Sweet Coastal) series. It is the perfect summertime read with just the right amount of drama to make the hard won romance even sweeter.

The couple in this story are like oil and water. Maggie and her cousin, Hope, own The Candy Jar. Owning a candy store sounds like something from a childhood dream. Duke works next door. Maggie detests him simply because he sells timeshares, which completely baffles Duke until he learns more about her past. His career choice along with a bitter breakup in her past mean that her walls are 12 foot high and solid concrete. She is not letting anyone in. This just made Duke more determined to chisel away at that wall.

When the two of them are thrown together as partners on a citywide scavenger hunt, they learn so much more about one another. They soon learn that they have more in common than they first realized. Both of them have meddling families, which is a point of contention for them, but also gives them some common ground.

This sweet, closed-door romance will suck you in from the first few pages as each chapter is told from the point of view of the main characters. There were a few comedic scenes mixed in, but this was more of a slow-burn romance which will warm your heart. I always enjoy a good enemies to lovers romance.

Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Genre: romcom
Content: kisses, allergic reaction on page (swelling)

Happy release day to The Deal Maker! This is the fourth book in the Sweet Coastal Kisses series and it follows Duke and Maggie.

Maggie is starting fresh in Willow Cove after a disastrous jilting and scamming by her ex-fiancé. She now co-owns The Candy Jar with her cousin Hope. Duke currently works next door to their shop. At 27, he still is unsure what he wants to do for his career and he jumps from venture to venture as he tries to figure it out. Because he’s currently selling timeshares, Maggie is NOT a fan of his.

When they are forced to work together on a city-wide scavenger hunt, they begin to see things a bit differently.

This is a light read, with minimal conflict and angst. In it, you’ll find one-sided enemies to lovers and forced proximity. If these are your jam, give it a try!

The Deal Maker is the fourth book in the Coastal Kisses series. This is a multi-author series with interconnected characters, and each book can be enjoyed as a standalone as well.

This was a super cute summer read. To say Maggie doesn't hit it off with Duke is an understatement. He has just started his new business as a timeshare salesman, and she blames the entire industry for hurting her grandmother in the past. Throw in some hurt from past relationships, and it would seem that Duke absolutely would not stand a chance of getting past her walls. But when they are forced to work together on a scavenger hunt, they start to see there is more to each other that meets the eye. I really loved the easy chemistry between these two. Their story was definitely a slow burn, but with all those issues that they had to work through, it absolutely worked for their story. They both had insecurities they had to work through, but I loved how they supported each other through it. It was a shorter read, perfect for summer... and having already read the previous books in the series, I enjoyed seeing some familiar characters make appearances too.

The Deal Maker is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.

But life next door to Duke Jacobson, a slick timeshare salesman, is anything but sweet. Duke’s business and his seemingly carefree attitude rub Maggie the wrong way, sparking daily clashes.

Maggie had been hurt in the past by people in similar professions to Duke and with the charm he had. She did not want to be involved with him in any way. Her friend convinced her to join the town's scavenger hunt and she ended up being partnered with Duke. That definitely forced her to see that there was more to him than his profession.

The activities involved were simple and fun. Maggie had to let loose and go with the flow since most of it involved areas she wasn't good in. I loved that Duke encouraged her to not focus so much on perfection.

Duke had a hard time figuring out what he wanted to do with his life. That was frowned upon by the people closest to him, especially since he couldn't hold a job for long without losing interest. I loved that Maggie didn't judge him for that.

They were an unlikely pair at the beginning but I loved seeing them slowly fall in love. This was a sweet read.

What little girl hasn’t dreamed about owning her own candy store???

Like Maggie, I too went into accounting and found it wasn’t much fun. I wish I had my own candy store back then.

Duke is just trying to find his way in the world. Going from job to job, he feels inadequate and aimless. He’s drawn to Maggie, but he can’t figure out why she gives him the cold shoulder. They knew each other a bit as teenagers so why is she acting this way?

Maggie has come to Willow Cove after her personal and professional life fell to pieces. Opening up The Candy Jar, with her cousin Hope, in the town she visited as a teenager.

Duke finally gets a chance to figure out why Maggie dislikes him so much when they’re thrown together in the town’s scavenger hunt. He sure has his work cut out for him.

I loved the bit of tension between Maggie and Duke. You could see her struggles from her past trying to keep her from moving forward. It takes some persistence on Duke’s part and some hard truth love from her cousin to help Maggie work through. They end up being great encouragers and support for one another, which they both desperately need. Maggie sees that she was wrong in her prejudice against Duke.

Some things I loved:
Ice cream theory
Scavenger hunt
Karaoke 🤣
Sandcastles
Queen of Hearts
The proposal!!!

Summer in Willow Cove is winding down but there’s still plenty of sweet romance to be had. Be sure to add this sweet summer read to your list.

Book 4 of the Coastal Kisses series is here and it is a delight!

Duke and Maggie are a great couple. If you want a good enemies to lovers trope, put this book at the top of your list to read! Their story has funny moments and quirks that are relatable...I found myself smiling a lot thinking "I would so react that same way!"

"Maggie rolls her eyes and then closes them. I'm not educated in the art of breathing, but I'm sure her extended silence is because she's trying to keep her temper under control."

"He shakes his head and runs a hand through his hair. I'm embarrassed to admit that I tracked his hand all the way through, definitely jealous. There's gotta be something wrong with me with thoughts like that."

Some of my favorites:
Dual POV
Small Town
Ice Cream Theory
Scavenger Hunt escapades (especially the duet!)
Pancake Breakfast
Baseball cards and Queen of Hearts
The ending!!!

I really thought this book was well written -- I loved all of the analogies! The story flowed well and kept me engaged the whole time. Sweet kisses only - the perfect read!

I received a complimentary copy from the author. All thoughts expressed are my own.

This is the fourth book in the Sweet Coastal Kisses series but it can be read as a standalone story. It does include characters from previous books in the series but you can easily follow the story without knowing those characters backgrounds. Maggie is the lead female character who is co-owner of candy shop with her cousin. Maggie’s fiancé broke up with her the day of her wedding as he had been dating someone else from their accounting office and she has sworn off dating. Duke can’t decide on a career but has recently rented retail location next to the candy shop for his time share business. Duke and Maggie are immediate enemies because Maggie despises time share businesses due to personal experience with her grandmother. The time share business sponsors a local scavenger hunt and guess who are paired together? Duke and Maggie! Can they survive this two week scavenger hunt together and will enemies tune to lovers. Read and find out! FYI there is a happy ending that is too sweet and I just love the overall self worth lessons that are undercurrents in this book. Add this book to your TBR today!

The Deal Breaker
Brittany Mills
Release Date: August 9, 2024

This is book #4 in the Sweet Coastal Kisses series.

I thought this was a super cute storyline. This is a short beachy read perfect for summer time. I’m really starting to adore this little town and the cross over of the previous characters.

I loved Maggie, the FMC, and how she was so closed off in the beginning of the book. While working with Duke on the scavenger hunt it was great to see her slowly open up about her past hurts and struggles. Dukes personality was a great compliment to hers and it was fun to finally how they came together.

One of my favorite things in this book were the different scavenger hunt activities (the performance song! 😍) Adding this aspect into the book was a perfect way for them to have to get to know each other.

Read if you like:
🍭Scavenger Hunt

🍭Great Friend Relationships

The Deal Maker is a delightful and heartwarming read that perfectly blends humor and romance! Maggie Dean’s fresh start in Willow Cove quickly turns complicated when she finds herself at odds with her neighbor, Duke Jacobson, a charming but annoying timeshare salesman. Their playful bickering is a highlight, filled with witty banter that kept me smiling!

The scavenger hunt brings them together in the most unexpected ways, allowing both characters to peel back their layers and share their dreams and insecurities. As they tackle each challenge, the tension shifts from frustration to undeniable chemistry, making it a joy to watch their relationship blossom.

Mills masterfully captures the essence of small-town charm, and the quirky townsfolk add a lovely touch to the story. If you're looking for a sweet, feel-good romance with a splash of humor, this book is a must-read! Grab some candy and enjoy this charming escape! 🍭💖

Finding new hope and happiness after heartbreak
A book of struggles, changes, and recovery from heartbreak. Maggie has arrived in Willow Cove after discovering her fiancée with the office receptionist the day of her wedding. Trying to pull her life back together she has opened a candy store with her cousin and they’re making it work. The only problem is Duke, next door. Duke works in the timeshare industry setting up appointments and Maggie hates timeshares after her grandmother had a bad experience with one. Now Duke, despite his good looks and charming ways, seems to always be around. When the mayor sets up a city-wide scavenger hunt and has paired Maggie with Duke. The only motivation, a free vacation or five thousand dollars to the top two teams. Can they get along for the few days needed to complete the hunt? I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

I loved this book!! Oh, the animosity from Maggie's side at the beginning. Poor Duke!! I absolutely loved watching the slow burn of their relationship and how trust was built. Duke was made for Maggie and Maggie for Duke. I was cheering Duke on as he took Maggie to his work event and she to her cousins wedding. I felt so bad for the past trauma that Maggie went through with her ex fiance. Wanted to throttle that man!!! Duke was an angel for how he handled her. So beautiful!!

Britney did such a great job in drawing my feelings into this book and taking me along with both Maggie and Duke!

I HATE sticky, so this quote hit hard!

"What I can’t understand is why she’s struggling this hard. What could’ve been so difficult that Maggie Dean is sitting here with syrup in her hair? She hates all things sticky and I don’t know if there’s anything stickier than real maple syrup."

Maggie is extremely annoyed by Duke who owns the business next her sweets shop. He sells vacation timeshare, which in her mind, is equal to an oily car salesman. No matter what Duke does, Maggie doesn't like it. It's not until they get paired up for a town contest does she start to see she has misjudged him.

If you enjoy clean beachy romances, this would be a fun book for you to reads. Here are some other things to look forward to when reading the book:

A quaint town
Ice cream indicator
Sand castles
Queen of Hearts
Dogs

This is book #4 in the Coastal Kisses series but can be read as a standalone. There are crossover characters from the previous books, but it doesn't affect the story.

This is the fourth book in The Sweet Coastal Kisses series. I really enjoyed this book also! I loved the ice cream adventure scale conversation between Maggie and Duke that banter was so cute and how Duke kept going in everyday trying different flavors to try and get a 10 on Maggie’s adventure scale was so cute!!

I think my highlight was the scavenger hunt when they got closer and slowly Maggie started to let down her walls where she was hurt by a pervious ex. I absolutely adored them both and seeing all the characters from the previous books in the Sweet Coastal Kisses series. These books are just the perfect summertime reads!!

Sweet and clean, this forced proximity, enemies to love was an enjoyable read. Although the enemies part was pretty one sided. He is kind of intrigued from the start while she has made a snap judgement, based on his career choice, to hate him. The story ends with me feeling pretty good about their chances for a successful relationship. Not sure I felt that way about her cousin though. I would have liked to have seen more of their future. That couple isn't the main feature at all but I still wanted assurance that it was all going to be okay.
I liked the characters and I like the setting for this series. It was an enjoyable read.

I had a little bit of a hard time connecting with the two main characters in the story. Maggie was still reeling over a failed, left of the altar, relationship. But Duke seem to be very wishy-washy and couldn’t make a commitment or a decision on what he wanted to do with his life. She despised him before she even met him because of his profession, of the moment, which also kind of bothered me. But on we went, it did have some good moments some funny some sweet and an interesting scavenger hunt. Not to mention a cute dog. Once the characters of got over there initial weirdness it became a cute, sweet romance, with a happy ever after for all. It is a clean, wholesome romance, which I really appreciate and I will always give it an extra star for that. :)

I've loved reading the Coastal Kisses series! This one by Britney M Mills was such a fun one. I loved Maggie and Duke.

Maggie is part owner of the local candy shop. She and her cousin sell delicious candy and ice cream. The only problem is the business next door sells time shares. And that leaves Maggie hating Duke. Maggie has been through a lot of things, and she's got a bit of PTSD about certain things. I loved the way Duke helps her see life and her challenges in a better light. Even just by listening.

I loved Duke, too. He isn't quite sure what he wants to be when he grows up. He's tried so many things. I hated how his family makes him feel like a failure. But I loved that Maggie was able to help him see his worth. And I loved how these two worked so hard together on the town scavenger hunt.

This book is a ton of fun! Make sure you read it.
