Rate this book
"Flight and Return" is the compelling story of the escape by Maximilian Lerner and his family from Nazi-occupied Austria, their travels through France, Spain and Portugal to escape German troops and their ultimate arrival to safety in the United States. The book documents the author's service in the U.S.Army as a military intelligence operative and his return to Europe, where he served in the Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor of the CIA, in the reconquest of the European continent, and his final service as a Nazi hunter as an agent of the Counter Intelligence Corps.

This is a wonderful memoir about one of my friends grandfather, whose family escaped from the Nazi occupied area of Austria during WW2.

Through this book he gives a backstory of his family, their Jewish faith, his experiences leading up to the war, during and so on. The family was able to travel through many countries before landing in the United States. It is once they came here he joined the Army and served as a military intelligence operative. He had to travel back to Europe and worked in what was kind of like the CIA back then (known as: Office of Strategic Services) Even more awesome is his story about his time working as an agent and hunting down Nazi's.

Now that I have read this book I hope to meet this very man next year when my friend gets married. Sure hoping time stays on his side, as he is very old now. He has lived a long life that is absolutely fascinating!

If you love memoirs and/or that of WW2, I highly recommend you read his book!
