Fear is a jungle. Fear is a prison. Steph knows this all too well. Every time she turns a corner, she knows exactly who will be there waiting for her but that doesn't make her feel any better. Her nights are filled with loud noises, and soft cries. The only way to escape this prison is by standing up for herself and her son. Fear can't control her forever... and neither can he.
Waaah! I so badly wanted to read about the ex being blown to pieces. What a piece of shit.
I could really feel my anxiety building as I skimmed through the pages. I’ve never been in an abusive relationship, but this book is a perfect representation of the miserable reality of constantly being scared. It takes courage to get out, to be free, and to try to live, and a different kind of courage to survive each day—looking over your shoulder, expecting the worst.
*ARC reader review* TW: Stalking; talk of DV and SA
Quick and great read. The author was able to convey real emotion in less than 60 pages while building a main character that the reader cares about. I really enjoy the writing style and the emphasis on the conversations between the MC and her child giving the MC real tangible motivation for her decisions throughout. With it being a novelette, there is minimal backstory but enough to understand what is going on and ends with the reader really filling in the blanks of what might have happened.
4.5 stars (I will always round up if I can't use half stars)
The plot revolves around a young single mother being stalked by her child's father and her trials in feeling safe again.
For a 53 page novelette, I feel like the story was pretty well fleshed out. I'd love more back story on what happened between Steph and MJ's father, but I've heard that this may be a part of a future publication so we can hope to see more of Steph and Lindsay and MJ.
I received this as an ARC copy from the author. My opinions are my own.
This book hits a bit close to home for me, but aside from the quick little breather I took to catch my breath, I found myself unable to put it down. The author was able to convey such a strong message in the short number of pages in this novella. Unfortunately, what the MC goes through, so many others have also gone through as well, myself included and I’m glad the author have chosen to give the MC a voice that showcases the many emotions that stems from a toxic, manipulative, and abusive relationship.
Free is a captivating novelette that delves into themes of fear, resilience, and the determination to break free. Ann Conway’s succinct storytelling leaves a lasting impact. Despite its 50 pages, Ann skillfully weaves in all crucial elements without any sense of haste or omission. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and eagerly await Ann’s next one! I heard through the grapevine there may be a part 2!
I just finished reading “Free”. All I can say is, WOW! I was captivated from the moment I picked it up all the way to the end. It is very well written , and packed with emotion! It is obvious what is going to happen at the ending without having to describe it. Excellent! I would love to read more of your work 5 + stars! Thanks for sharing!
