Join these brave young women on their journey to change the world and discover the power of resilience, determination, and solidarity.
I’ll start by saying this is undoubtedly one of the best releases of the year.
From the very first story, the book grabs your attention with its remarkable quality. This compilation features five different stories, each centered on a young woman who, despite her age, used her conviction and determination to change the world.
Greta Thunberg was the only name I recognized before reading, but the book reveals sides of her that aren’t widely known, beyond her famous "How dare you?" speech at the UN. It sheds light on the depth of her impact, making her story even more compelling.
Each of these remarkable young women serves as a powerful inspiration. Their stories are deeply emotional, often leaving you with a lump in your throat. They are living proof that one person can truly make a difference in the world. It may seem impossible until someone actually does it.
I highly recommend this book—it’s an inspirational and moving read, and a standout addition to my best books of the year.
I also encourage you to watch these girls’ speeches on YouTube, as they are truly inspiring. It goes to show that leadership isn’t something you choose—it’s something you’re born with.
What a great collection of stories. These kids are inspiring. The stories are brief but well organized and packed with details. Some of the subject matter is not kid-friendly (Malala's shooting, the Stoneman Douglas shooting, graphic death threats leveled at some of these young activists) but the nature of the illustration keeps it from being too graphic.
I particularly liked Jérôme Gillet's illustration, so much detail. I would have recognized his drawings of Greta's face even with no context.
------------------------- Malala who risked her own life to stand up to the Taliban oppression. Vittoria Macioci
I've been a fan of Malala Yousafzai since 2012 and I love seeing her story told here. This kid is fierce.
------------------------- Greta whose battle to protect the planet began when experiencing childhood challenges. Gijé
I knew less about pint-sized climate activist Greta Thunberg going in. She turned her Asperger's into a superpower and was already changing people's behavior en masse by age 15.
------------------------- Yusra the Syrian swimming champion, who braved the sea to save refugees. Jocelyn Joret
A young Syrian refugee and Olympic caliber swimmer who uses her platform to plead for humane treatment of refugees displaced by war and government persecution.
I hadn't heard of Yusra. Her story is heartbreaking, all the more so for the soaring reactionary anti-immigrant sentiment and rhetoric pervading the west right now.
------------------------- Emma & The Parkland Kids who survived the Parkland high school shooting and fight for gun control. Brett Parson
Depicts the horrifying Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting and the survivors' subsequent activism.
------------------------- Melati & Isabel schoolgirls at war with pollution in Indonesia. Rebecca Traunig
Indonesian sisters who launched a campaign tackling plastic waste on their home island of Bali.
Prvo i glavno, zbog podsticajnog duha.
Malala che ha rischiato la vita pur di studiare e affinché anche altre bambine come lei potessero farlo;
Greta che ha "disobbedito" e non è andata a scuola per il proprio futuro, il nostro e quello dei nostri figli, per far sì che si abbia più consapevolezza sull'ambiente;
Yusra che grazie alla sua passione per il nuoto è riuscita a salvare delle vite, diventando campionessa rappresentando tantissimi rifugiati;
Emma che sopravvissuta ad una sparatoria in un liceo non ha paura di battersi e di sollevare coscienze per il controllo delle armi in America;
Melati e Isabel che in Indonesia hanno lottato contro l'inquinamento, facendo cambiare la legge per vietare sacchetti di plastica;
Girl Rebels is a graphic novel written by multiple authors and illustrated by various artists.
The book is divided into five independent stories, each exploring the origins of six young girls journeys to becoming spokespeople for some of the most important causes of our time.
I thoroughly enjoyed each story and found them incredibly enlightening. Not only did I learn about the girls, their journeys, and their causes, but I also gained insight into what led them to take up their fights. Before reading, I was only familiar with Greta Thunberg, but discovering more about her childhood and the struggles she faced to have her voice heard on issues close to her heart was truly inspiring.
Every story captured my interest, but the standout for me was the first, which told the story of Malala Yousafzai. She not only fought to promote women’s rights in a country where men are seen as superior but also continued her fight for change even after surviving a brutal attack.
I would love to read more graphic novels like this. It’s a fantastic way to learn about peoples lives, especially for those who don’t typically read traditional biographies. The combination of artwork and insight into key moments of their lives made this a much more engaging read for me.
Mostly, I liked this look at several individual young people who have helped make change in the world: Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, X González (and other kids who survived the Parkland shooting), Yusra Mardin, and the sisters Melati and Isabel Wijsen. I learned some new things about all of them, and the art is varied and interesting.
What was disappointing to see was X González still being referred to as a girl, when they came out as nonbinary in 2021, 2 years before this book's original French publication. Also, the text still refers to Greta Thunberg as having Asperger's Syndrome, which is a label that has been mostly rejected by autistic people in favor of referring to the whole autism spectrum. Thunberg herself uses the term autistic now. I know we knew less in 2015 when her mother said she had Asperger's, but the terminology has moved on, and the book should reflect that. (That said, since this book is originally French, I do not know how the diagnosis process works in that country, so perhaps the authors were not fully aware of the distinction.)
Those issues aside, this is a decent overview of these individuals' work at such a young age, and they all deserve our respect and admiration for what they've been able to accomplish.
From what age are we allowed to change the world?🌎 . Firstly, I wish to thank @titancomics for reaching out and sending a copy of Girl Rebels in exchange for a review and to be a part of their book tour. 📖 Take a peek below to see what the book is about and my thoughts! . Follow the stories of six incredible women in modern history, including Greta Thunberg, Emma ‘X’ Gonzales, and Malala Yousafzai, among others. Six girls, five empowering adventures. From climate activism to fighting for education and gun control, each story delves deep into the personal struggles and triumphs of remarkable individuals. . My thoughts: This is one of the most inspirational graphic novels I've ever read. Out of the six stories, I was familiar with three and learned new things about these extraordinary young women. The diversity of the stories with the art styles shine off the page. There is a lot of joy captured along with the devastation of what these girls were put through. In Yusra Mardini's story, there is a small panel of art that brought tears to my eyes, as one moment it is a normal day in your life and then next something catastrophic changes everything. Yes, I cried a lot in this book. Tearing up at a little Greta Thunberg and her struggles before the protesting crossed her mind. Emma & The Parkland Kids took me right back to when the news broke. What struck me throughout the book is that these experiences have happened in the timeliness of my life. I remember the story of Malala Yousafzai, how suddenly the image of this girl was everywhere and finding out what happened to her. A teenager myself at the time and being horrified to find out that young girls being educated in another part of the world was forbidden and could get you killed. I adore nonfiction with chapters that are dedicated individually and give complete focus. I feel that the artists chosen to represent the woman featured were a perfect fit. There is tragedy in the pages, but the power, hope, and determination overcome it all. This left me so emotional and proud. Knowing how far these women have come and what can be achieved at a young age proves that a little change can lead to better futures.
