The last in a series consisting of the Leveller Trilogy and the John Gallagher duology. There's no flashes, no bangs, no explosions or car chases, not even a slammed door. Just the high-pitched squeal, odd deep gurgle and long slow whine from an increasingly malfunctioning toilet cistern. Due to an ill-conceived attitude, it's now the working home of Thurstan Baddeley, England's finest detective, as he delves into the world of cold cases. Welcome to the occasionally visited Sutton Box, a place where Police careers go to die.
A former member of a north of England, gritty, metropolitan police force, the author has thirty years experience of day to day policing.
Breathless pursuits on foot, car chases, riots, firearms incidents, bomb searches, murder investigations, excessive tea drinking and hours of boredom were complimented by his knowledge of hiding in bushes and dodging wayward tanks, acquired in another life as a Military Policeman.
A recent diagnosis of ‘high functioning Aspergers’ has helped explain an almost obsessive interest in the Kennedy assassinations and lack of it in sport, big trucks, car parts in general and social events.
He lives on a small hill, in Romania, with his wife, three cuddly toys and Lily the dog. Dan Wheatcroft is a pseudonym.
Dan Wheatcroft has added another great story to the series, his characters draw you into the world of police work and the plot twists and turns. I really enjoyed this book and read it in two days, cannot wait for the next in the series, I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend not only this book but the full series.
The Box gives an insight into police work the public rarely see, and is certainly never shown in films or popular TV series.
After loudly disputing the latest petty regulations from the newly appointed Chief Constable, Detective Chief Inspector Thurstan Baddeley is banished from the Major Incident Team with orders to work his way through boxes of cold cases in a dilapidated police station on an old industrial estate. A murder committed over 100 years ago particularly takes Thurston's attention, he digs back into history exposing evidence of political and police corruption.
Compulsive reading with an excellent twist at the end, hopefully there'll be a fifth book.
Thurston Baddely feels like an old friend. I look forward to his exploits when a new book comes out. We are told on the cover ‘no flashes, or bangs, no explosions or car chases’…. but the book did not disappoint. Twists and turns, friendly banter, sarcasm, great characters and frustrating senior managers…it’s all there in bucket loads. An enjoyable read.
A continuation of The Leveller trilogy, this book brings the story of Thurstan Baddeley up to date. As usual, DCI Baddeley is making waves and this time upsets the wrong person, which gets him assigned to a cold cases backwater. That's where the intrigue begins... A very interesting story, with some unexpected twists and turns, especially towards the end of the book.
You get to solve unrelated crimes. The danger is not always clear but the thought involved keeps you interested. Impatiently waiting for book 2 to build on book 1. Read and learn.
