Consorting with Romance

Ash
Working as a consort has been a respectable profession for close to a century now, and while I didn't exactly sit around dreaming about this profession in my youth, when dad died and I suddenly had to care for not just myself but my younger sister as well...let's just say sometimes we stumble onto a path by accident.

My clients are mostly regulars, so I don't have to deal with many weird surprises, but they make enough new client referrals to keep things interesting. I've done well enough for myself that several years back I was able to purchase a small house with a yard outside the city, and my work apartment is in an upscale part of town. All things considered, at 36, I love my life. I have my work and my books and my plants, and I'm happy. I've never felt like I've missed out on anything life has to offer...accept a new assistant.

I definitely need to find a new assistant.

Jesse
I come from a family of farmers, but I’ve always felt like I have more to offer. When I’d told my family that I wanted to go to medical school instead of staying on the farm, they’d hugged me, supported me, and told me they were sure that I was going to be a success no matter what path I followed. They’d saved every penny they could, and had somehow been able to send me off to the city with my tuition and expenses fully paid. Only, it turns out the city is more expensive than we'd expected and I don’t have the heart to tell them even with all they’ve given me I can’t quite afford things like...well…food…

When I saw the help wanted listing, the money and hours made it seem like someone had miraculously created a job posting exclusively for me.

Now if only I knew how to be a consort's assistant...

๏ Jesse didn’t think it could be so easy being a consort’s assistant. The hard part was trying to not fall for his new boss. ๏

I’m trying really hard to be objective with this review, because Consorting with Romance was beautifully written, a lovely display of romance and everlasting love — i just really struggled to connect with it.

First of all, let me state, as many reviewers have, that there are multiple sex scenes not between the main couple. Ash is a consort, a sort of escort, where he gets paid to provide company, sexual or otherwise.
Jesse doesn’t mind in the least, but if on page sex scenes that are not between the MCs could bother/trigger you, i would not recommend this read.

For me, that wasn’t the problem with this piece. I could’ve done without the on page scenes with others, but I wasn’t exactly bothered by them.
My main issue was the constant time skips. I couldn’t feel their bond, their relationship growth. It felt almost insta-love. One minute, they’re dancing around their feelings, the next they’re declaring love.

Also, their world felt a little…off? It seemed like a contemporary piece set in an alternate universe. Like, almost our reality, with a couple of oddities thrown in here and there. Which could’ve been cool and different, except that it wasn’t really explained. So, half way through and I start questioning what I’m reading. Is it supposed to be fantasy? Is it set in the future? No clue.

My other issue was the third act dramatic moment.

What could’ve been a sweet love story was instead like watching a movie on fast-forward, pausing only during the big moments and skipping rushedly to the happy ever after.

I really enjoyed Rayne Hawthorne’s writing style, so I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more of their work. This particular read was just not meant for me.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

CW and tropes (spoilers):
- Consensual prostitution
- On page sex not between MCs
- On page physical assault
- Death of a family member (off page)
- Boss vs assistant
- MC with anxiety

Jesse & Ash
Rating: 4.0 ⭐

- Sex Worker/Med Student
- Hurt/Comfort
- Found Family
- Anxiety Rep

This was so much sweeter and more emotional than I thought it would be. Reading the blurb you're definitely thinking that it's going to be a little seedy and all about sex but it's actually quite touching. I had no idea how a relationship with a consort and his lover would work with him sleeping with other people, but they make it work. This story is based in a time after a World War III where the culture and availability of goods after rebuilding is completely different.

Please be aware that there are detailed scenes of Ash working and having sex with other people besides Jesse (1 right at the beginning and a few more towards the end). If you are not okay with this then don't read the book. It's not fair to the author to ding them for this aspect when you've been warned in the blurb and in others reviews.

Ash has been a consort for about 20 years at this point, starting at 18 when he needed to become guardian of his younger sister and be able to support her future. Ash has been lonely ever since his sister left and never spoke to him again. He does like his job though because he's always been a sexual person and he gets gratification from pleasing others. A consort is a well-known and legal profession and Ash has built a stable clientele (men and women) and solid reputation. He needs a new assistant and so far, the candidates haven't been anywhere close to what he needs. Then Jesse knocks on his door and Ash's world shifts.

Jesse lived on a farm his whole life, with an extremely supportive and loving family. Their family and relationship dynamics are rare since the war. Jesse had aspirations of going into the medical field so his family scraped together as much money as they could to send him off to medical school in the big city. Of course, none of them knew how much it would really cost to live and stay in the city so that money went way quicker than expected. Jesse now has to find a job to afford to stay in school and the city for the last two years of his degree. His anxiety is high while he's pacing outside of the door for the consort assistant interview. He hasn’t spiked like this in a while. Jesse doesn't have a lot of workplace skills since he has only ever worked the farmland at home but the hours and pay for this job are too good to be true. When Ash opens the door Jesse's world quiets, he takes a deep breath, and is calmer than he's ever been while staring into those green eyes.

They connect immediately and start off as just coworkers, then Jesse wants to be a friend for the lonely Ash so they begin to spend time together outside of work. Months go by before they ever throw caution into the wind and decide to be together in a relationship. Ash kind of kept himself at a bit of a distance just because he was waiting for Jesse to change his mind and leave him because of his job. Ash never felt like he was good enough but Jesse knew better and was determined to show Ash why he was so precious. Jesse never once tried to change Ash or tell him the he had to stop being a consort. He fully understood and respected Ash's career, never diminishing his worth or making him feel shameful. Ash does try to breakup with Jesse so that he doesn't hurt Jesse's career due to their relationship, but Jesse wasn't having that so there isn't a real breakup in this story.
"I want you. I've wanted you since you opened the door for my interview. I thought it was a crush. I thought I'd get over it. I didn't. I told myself your friendship was enough. It's not."

"I thought you were struggling with sex because of your job, I never realized it was because you were afraid to let me love you."

I really liked that Jesse's attraction to Ash had nothing to do with his profession. Jesse could see the real Ash through all the bravado pretty quickly and he fell in love with the person and who he was on the inside. The had a lot of sweet and tender moments together before and after work. Jesse's family was amazing and so welcoming that they gave a little something extra to Ash that he never thought he would get.

Hawthorne does give us a little bit of a scare towards the end that will get your adrenaline going but all is well. The epilogues were so sweet and a great way to see how their relationship progressed and how the family is doing.
"I would have never imagined someone like Jesse stumbling into my world. I would never have imagined finding a life or a love like this, and I'm grateful for every touch, every smile, and every sunrise we share."

Ok, moment of truth time. When I first read the blurb for this I was expecting a juicy little seedy sex-mad-romp read and not this beautiful, touching, soul-squeezing read I got.

It. Is. Stunning. I cannot begin to tell you how a book between a consort and his lover works when he still sleeps with other people. Or how it isn't seedy, dirty, makes it feel taboo. Or even how you as a reader look over what Ash's job actually is because these 2 are all that matter in this. Them and their unwavering love for each other is the heart of this book and I loved it.

It has so much love in it that it kept taking me by surprise (my fault for making assumptions but I'll never learn). There's very little angst in it and the love between Jesse & Ash is the kind people only dream of, or don't believe exists (like moi 😂).

Read it in a day, I just couldn't put it down and will definitely stay in my head & heart for a long time. Thank you Rayne Hawthorne!!

DNF @ 9%.

I picked this because of the cover, ngl. And positive sex work rep is always nice too.

Unfortunately, this writing spends too much time describing appearances, clothing, rooms, decor, etc…. And I just don’t care about that. I can’t visualize it, so it’s just frustrating for me when books are littered with descriptions of how things look that really don’t matter to the plot.

I’m also just wondering why “consort” and not “escort”? Because the info dumping of the job describing escort work, but they are called consorts. And why they are called consorts isn’t at all mentioned in the info dump at the beginning.

Also, how is a med student supposed to balance med student-ing with a part time job that isn’t remote and requires him to be there for the 3-4 clients Ash sees 4-5 days of the week? Is Ash supposed to work his schedule around his med student PA?

Needless to say, it’s just not working for me if I’m more concerned with Jesse’s schedule than actually reading the book.

I'll admit that the cover made me request the ARC; it's gorgeous.
It's my first time reading about sex work, so I don't have much experience with what to expect. Overall, it was okay, so our couple (Ash, the sex worker) and (Jess, his assistant) it's low in angst (it's more from Ash's side) little drama with HEA and an epilogue.

There was a lot of tells and no show. The writing style kinda hindered my enjoyment as there was a lot of time jump like it's been weeks, or months as the characters got closer but never shown or told how they got close in those times. I guess this was what made it hard to connect with the couple. It's my first time reading from this author, so maybe that's why I'm not used to it. I will be checking other works from the author in the future.

If you enjoy this type of trope and storyline, give it a go. It's pretty short, too.

Perfect little read!

I usually find that short books leave me a bit sad, needing to know more about the characters and wishing their backgrounds were more fleshed out. That's definitely not the case here! I feel like it's the perfect length with just the right mix of sweet, spicy and dramatic moments.

I absolutely adore Jesse and Ash! They're such well written mcs that I found myself routing for them from the start! The side characters also add to overall feel of the book for me.

Not so much futuristic just not really in this world that we live. An interesting concept and a story that’s easy to read. Mild drama, a rather unorthodox profession and a relationship that just works. Ash and Jesse deliver a story, a love story that has a warmth and emotion about it that you feel. I liked them both and enjoyed their bond as it formed and bloomed. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.

Please, be aware that Ash is a sex worker: in this story there are detailed descriptions of him having sex with other people besides Jesse. Don't be mean towards the author by leaving unfair reviews if this is not your cup of tea.

This was a nice story, very sweet and romantic.
Ash has worked as a consort for about 20 years: at 18 he became the sole guardian of his younger sister and he did what he had to do in order to support his little family. She abandoned him when she found out, but he kept doing this job and built for himself a honest career and a solid reputation.
Jesse has lived in a farm his whole life, he has an extremely supportive and loving family who helped him when he decided to start medical school.
Since money wasn't enough, he applied to be Ash's assistant.

They connect immediately and I was pleasantly surprised that their attraction had nothing to do with Ash's work, but it was almost immediately about feelings, about a soul recognising its other half.

The timeline is too rushed sometimes, but it was nice to see how their relationship grew since the day they agreed to date. Their first time is very sweet.
Another thing that I didn't particularly like was the lack of dialogues, I would have liked more conversations between them, instead of internal monologues.

What I really loved was Jesse's attitude towards Ash's job: he never, not for once, made him feel bad for what he did, he never diminished his worth as a person, he never made him feel inferior or shameful or undeserving of his love. He was only concerned about his safety. I also liked his friendship with Casey.
I adored the epilogue, overall it was a very adorable romance.

I had a great time reading Ash and Jesse's story. I couldn't put the book down once I started it and read it in one go.

What I liked/My highlights:
- The sweetness of the story! I was expecting a lot of smut and I got an adorable and touching romance full of trust, love, tenderness and acceptance (but still some lust).
- The (overall) positive representation of sex work, its normalisation and the general open-mindedness of the characters on this topic (those that matter anyway).
- The way the sex scenes are depicted. They are not the main focus of the book, but just a part of the storytelling, as are the dates and the working arrangements, etc. It's not a smut book, but a romance book that relates the sex aspect of a relationship. Which I'm absolutely here for.
- I always like a dual POV. It allows a more in depth view of the characters' insecurities and way of thinking.

What I liked (a tiny bit) less
- I prefer a slow burn to a quickly-falling-in-love storyline. But I know not everyone does. And, in this case, having a slow burn romance would have meant cutting corners on the ups and downs Ash and Jesse have to face after falling for each other, so it works for me.
- I wish some parts were longer (Jesse figuring things out right away after the mixer). But that's only because I like feeling bad before things get resolved. A bit of angst before the dramatic gesture.

Overall, a great read and I'll look into Rayne Hawthorn's other book (To Love: Wherever It Finds You) and his upcoming novel, Beneath the Indigo Sky.

I had the immense pleasure to receive an ARC for Consorting With Romance. This is my honest review.

The blurb for this book, especially with it being about a sex worker, made me think it would be a 5 spice book, it’s maybe a 3. It’s a very lovely story and quite an interesting take on what the world may look like a
Should WWIII and its aftermath. Definitely different, very much a sweet, loving& caring book about finding what you never knew was missing in your life.

Jesse (29), medical student / Ash's new assistant
Ash (37 in book, 36 in synopsis), consort

I'm going to get this out of the way straight off because I feel like it really impacts the readability/relatability of the book - so, for reasons (???), this is set post-WWIII in a world where consorts are a legitimate profession (think Inara from Firefly the TV series, I guess) and pretty much nothing else in the world has significantly changed, aside from some agricultural practices / the availability of certain foods and the fact that marriage is kind of an archaic social construct that few people participate in. For other reasons, none of this information is clearly disclosed in the synopsis and is rather lightly sprinkled throughout the book leaving the reader a little confused as to the setting and worldbuilding, which is not my favourite feeling. This, coupled with the fact that the opening scene is a little confounding and dry (), I'll be honest, I almost DNF'd the book, but decided to push through and it did get somewhat better once it hit its stride.

If, like me, you are an absolute weak-kneed puddle for the brother/father trope (where an older sibling takes guardianship of a younger one due to some tragic event) don't get your hopes up from the synopsis, there are no warm fuzzies here.

Now, aside from a heavy reliance on internal musings/monologue and telling rather than showing I quite enjoyed the story. Both Ash and Jesse are likable characters, I was invested in their boss/employee to friends to more journey and it felt believable. The Holiday scene was cute, and I loved the slow burn, where Ash was worried about the physical aspect of their relationship given his job. I enjoyed the normalization and inclusion of seeing Ash at work and their discussions surrounding it (he is a sex worker who has sex with people that are not Jesse), but it would have been nice to have seen a little bit of that side of Jesse's schooling to balance things out. As much as I dislike third-act break-ups the halftime show we got here felt a little necessary because they weren't really communicating properly. Unfortunately, the resolution of the issues could have used some work since it didn't feel like they actually addressed the problems between them adequately and it felt like a cheap way to push the characters into "taking their relationship to the next level" so to speak. Regardless, I was rooting for them and happy to see their relationship progress. I enjoyed the secondary/supporting characters, especially how warm and inviting Jesse's family was with Ash.

All in all, I enjoyed the book, but feel like a bit more editing, smoother pacing, and a better synopsis would really elevate it. It's a pretty quick read so I would recommend it if it sounds interesting to you.

Rating: 4.5 stars (9/10)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Tropes: consort x assistant, medical student, age gap, sunshine x sunshine, loneliness, on-page explicit details of sex work, post-WWIII future, hurt/comfort
Review:
This one surprised me in some interesting ways! I can't remember what made me want to apply for the ARC, but I do love a good sex worker story, and it was interesting seeing the idea of consorts and how the profession is viewed in this world which is different to ours but also not. Jesse is desperate for work that will give him the money to support him through school but allow him the hours to study, and Ash needs an assistant who will fit a list of requirements for the particular job he has. Jesse is a perfect fit for Ash, and they both immediately feel a pull between them, but they maintain their professionalism for months, despite becoming fast friends. Ash becomes increasingly aware of just how lonely the last 20 years of his life has been, and he's desperate for someone to call his, but because of the nature of his work, he does not believe anyone would want him. Jesse, of course, thinks that's bs and he's special and his job is a part of him, and he finds Ash attractive and interesting as a person, along with everything he does.

I was scared in this story because of how fast everything seemed to be progressing between them, and I was afraid of what would happen. There is drama in their relationship, but that is only because of Ash's feelings of inadequacy, and the lack of communication because they are both trepidatious about their situation has led them both to have misunderstood where they both stand. I love how that internal conflict disappears as they both fully commit to each other, and we get some really sweet and spicy scenes between them. I do have to say that there are numerous scenes of Ash working (aka. having sex) both before and after they have started dating. I know some people don't like to see that, but it is there and you should be aware of it if it is a trigger. However, I found it interesting to not only see Ash as he's working, but to contrast the ways he feels and experiences stuff when at work vs with Jesse.

Something happens at around the 80% mark which I didn't see coming until we got there, and it had me stresso espresso 😬 we don't exactly get an explanation as to the reasoning why this thing happened, if it was malicious or loss of control, but seeing Jesse so torn up about it was difficult. Having said that, the ending to their story was really sweet and beautiful, and I love how Ash was able to find a new family in Jesse's family, as well as remain friend with some of his clients and also some of Jesse's old classmates. I really enjoyed this story, it was a quick but fun one, and I haven't read anything like it before!

I must admit, this book was a major disappointment. I expected something darker and more realistic—something that would truly depict the risks of this profession.

Why did I even read the book?
The fact that Ash was attacked, as I had read in reviews, piqued my interest in the story.
I hoped to see trauma, self-doubt, deeper character development, a shift in his perspective on his work—maybe some genuine reflection. Nope. Nothing. Zero. Ash was perfectly fine after the attack, despite barely managing to reach his emergency button. This complete lack of impact made the book feel shallow.

What Else Was Missing?
Jesse’s Perspective: There was no exploration of Jesse’s inner conflict when Ash went from being in his arms to being with four different clients a day. Not a moment of deeper doubts.

Ash’s Perspective: Similarly, Ash would wake up next to Jesse, go straight to work, and have sex without the slightest trace of doubt or emotional turmoil.

And even after the attack, instead of reevaluating his choices, he was just engaging in rather rough sexual encounters with clients on page.

The Physical and Emotional Toll of the Profession:
Did the author even do the slightest bit of research? Did she read biographies of former sex workers or adult film stars? I sincerely doubt it. There is no mention of burnout, fatigue, or the impact of working in this field for decades. After twenty years of having sex with multiple clients daily, Ash somehow remains magically high-libido, with the same energy as a twenty-year-old—even though he’s nearly forty! NO PILLS NEEDED! C'mon.

A Complete Lack of Realism:
I guess the author super strongly wanted to show a positive sex-working rep, or something.
TOO much. There is such a thing as overdoing.

This reads like pure fantasy. It’s clear that the author wanted to paint a sugar-coated fairy tale in which a sex worker, after two decades in the industry, has absolutely no issues, all is perfect—no boredom, no exhaustion, no declining libido, no health problems.

An Unrealistically Perfect Ending: Everything wraps up in a sweet, idealized resolution where everyone accepts everyone, and the story ends with a wholesome "kumbaya" moment on a farm, after Ash works for 8 more years, while Jesse doesn't mind.

It’s a shame that books with a more realistic take on this subject—ones that aim to portray the profession without stigma but still stay true to reality—are so hard to find.
This genre desperately lacks such stories. Instead, we’re flooded with a romanticized version of sex work that is so far removed from reality that it feels artificial, covered in thick layers of pink paint, sickly sweet to the point of nausea.

My advice? Add a pinch of realism. Read actual escort biographies. Doing so would undoubtedly add much-needed depth to this book.

Wait a minute... what just happened? What did I just read? I'm flabbergasted.

Oh, wow. Tbh, I saw this book in passing on IG once, took a screenshot, and moved on with my life. Yesterday I remembered the cover and went to look for the book. I started it and didn't think much about anything else.

I didn't expect this book to happen in the future ( after w w 3 ). Let's hope we don't experience this ever, just saying... anyhow, as I was saying, I didn't expect this book to take place in the future, I didn't know what it was about, and I went into it blindly. It worked for me, sure, but idk if it will work the same for everyone else. This books topic, while not scandalous or tab00 it is unusual, and for some, it might be trigg.ering.

Please read the CW and the blurb before picking it up because I wouldn't like for you to not like it for that specific reason and then give it a low rating or a bad review.

The story is absolutely beautiful. It was like a warm hug, like a hot cup of cocoa in front of the fire on a cold night. It was cozy and sweet. It was everything nice out there.

The characters, Jess and Ash, are made for each other. They love each other fiercely and endlessly in a world where love is not a priority anymore, and it's almost frowned upon.

The way they react to each other is so wholesome, ahhhhh. Adorable.

While this book is dual pov, I loved that sometimes the author gave us both perspectives for the important moments instead of moving on with the action. It's just... idk, it fit them so well.

The boom is written in a way that you feel the way Jess and Ash love each other. The words are soft and sweet. They invite you into their story. They make you part of it.

I loved Jess' family, I loved how supportive they were, and I loved the way the book ended.

It was somehow so naturally progressing to that ending that it didn't feel forced. Yes, you'd expect it, but idk if you'd expect it to happen like that.

I absolutely adored them, and I can't wait to read other books written by this author.

P.S. please read the CW, and if at any point you feel like the story is not for you, just move on instead of leaving a bad rating/review. More people should definitely read this sweet book, and if you're a pos, that could not happen. Thanks.

I didn't know what to read next and wanted something a little fun, so I went stalking and found this in Raynes' back catalogue.

Ash is a sweet man who works as a Consort/ Sex worker. He's looking for an assistant to help with the running of the office ( pictures a doctors office but behind the door you're getting funky ) Along comes Jesse, a kind, smart, slightly naive med student. Jesse is looking for some work to help supplement the money his parents worked so hard to give him for college. But city life is expensive and it's just not enough.

Both men hit it off instantly, forming an immediate friendship. Slowly, feelings catch, and they decided to take this slow and see where it goes.

Jesse obviously knows about Ash's job, and he is genuinely fine with it. He knows those clients don't get the parts of Ash that he does, his heart. However, Ash himself finds it difficult to trust that he is enough and that it is safe to go all in.

I knew Ash was a sex worker, but I didn't expect the added bonus of so many 'client' scenes. I was thrown for a second when it is mentioned they are in the future, post WW3. There are no timelines or any great worlds to figure out, just little quirks you get here and there.

I am a visual reader, so I love the way Rayne writes to set the scene. I want to know what was around, what the smells and sounds and environment are like. The way this is done makes even the smuttiest parts seem sweet and romantic.

That was a fun read. Super cute pair. Things aren't always smooth going, and there are some scary moments, so check before diving in.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, getting into the characters and the situation. I wondered a bit about the setting, as some parts didn’t seem to be in the present time, and eventually learned that was true, it would be more in the future. The idea of legal consorts, professionally trained and accepted in society was one of the first clues it wasn’t set now.

Jesse is a farm boy currently in the city to attend medical school, Ash works in the city as a consort offering his services to select clientele. When Jesse needs to supplement income from his family while in University, he applies to be a consort’s assistant — basically schedule appointments, collect money owed, and change sheets between clients. Ash began his career as a way to care for his sister after their parents died, but found that he liked the work and continued it as a career, making good money and satisfied with his life for the past 20 years.

Both men are attracted and drawn to each other, but Ash resists, feeling himself unworthy due to his occupation, and Jesse holds back, feeling he isn’t good enough for Ash, until a year into working together, things change. The relationship develops slowly over time, Jesse wanting each new thing between them to be special. Love builds slowly, and both find themselves comfortable with each other, with a sense that the other is the person they have been missing. The developing love between the two is a beautiful time of learning more about each other, finding their other half, and feeling each is the order’s home. This was a satisfying story that left me with very positive feelings. I will watch for more from this author.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

This novel is an easy-to-read and engaging story about two seemingly incompatible guys. Ash is a professional escort, burdened by a dysfunctional family and a traumatic past. Jesse is an easygoing student, a farm boy with a loving family, and he is doing his best to make it through medical school. They met when Ash recruited Jesse as his PA. The story follows the development of their intense attraction from professional relationship into friendship and finally profound love, despite their differences and the strain Ash's profession put on their relationship.
It is an easy-to-read, smooth-flowing story about the development of the relationship between Jesse and Ash in a straightforward but engaging narrative. I love seeing Jesse overcome the restrictions and societal prejudices of Ash's profession with love, acceptance, and trust.
“I didn’t accept him despite his profession. His profession was a large part of his identity, and I loved every piece of him, even that.”
The author skillfully handles the potentially controversial topic of loving someone who shares intimacy with others, doing so with care and sensitivity.
What to expect: easy-to-read romance set in the future; likable characters; smooth-flowing and engaging narrative; perfect choice to relax after a difficult day.
What not to expect: dark drama, angst and suspense, heart-wrenching and complex emotions, action, mystery, and a well-defined fantasy world.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book. This review is an independent and genuine reflection of my thoughts.

I’ve discovered my penchant for cover Artwork rather than human models having finished this series by Rayne Hawthorne. All four books have great covers that just begged me to read them and ‘Consorting with Romance’ is a very unusual story set in a timeline in the future. Not Fantasy or Paranormal, but it is accepting of many things that currently cause problems for people that are anyway ‘different’.

Having enjoyed a wonderfully happy life with his family on their farm, Jesse, the youngest son goes away to medical school. Funds are in short supply so he replies to an advertisement for a PA even though he has no experience.

Apparently in this seemingly idealistic world being a Consort is a recognised and respected profession and Ash is one of the best. When Jesse comes to work for Ash neither men were prepared for the attraction between them. Jesse takes care of all the administrative tasks in the office, taking payment from satisfied clients, cleaning up after they leave in preparation for next client etc.

Between Jesse’s anxiety and Ash’s sad early life serious issues arise when neither man can deny their feelings and external events occur which causes heartache.

**************

Jesse is such an adorable young man but I found it hard to believe his ready acceptance of Ash’s profession especially when he had such feelings for Ash. Ash is an equally adorable character and I so wanted them to resolve the problems that arose.

But this is a ‘new world’ so I suspended my own reactions to the setup and really enjoyed this unusual MM Romance set in a future that we can only hope is possible given the current upheaval and uncertainties in our world.

'All he wanted was me.... How could I make him understand that I didn’t deserve his patience… his kindness. I didn’t deserve him.'

I really loved this book. I was fascinated by the premise. How would a relationship like this work. I ended up really loving both Ash and Jesse. They were both so sweet and I liked how their relationship developed. I loved that Jesse accepted Ash as he was- didn't get jealous or try to get Ash to stop being an escort. Ash hesitated because he thought Jesse deserved better than him, would be judged badly because of his job. It hurt my heart. But Jesse never waivered and I loved him for it and his loyalty.

'I needed him to understand how much he meant to me. I needed him to understand that I didn’t care what he did for a living, that he’d become my whole world.'

I just couldn't get enough of these two! I don't really like when any one of the couple sleep with other people in my romances, but I didn't mind it here because it was necessary in this context. If that was just glossed over, I think Ash's job would have felt less impactful to read about. There was a scare towards the end and I was honestly a bit surprised which of them it effected more. But it did feel realistic too, and I appreciated that.

A beautiful story (and beautiful artwork!). This was the first book I've read by this author and I look forward to reading more. 5 stars.

Gay romance with steamy, sweet, sad and even one scary moment
This story occurs in a place and time far in the future, I hope. It is after World War 3 and many things are different but many remain the same. For instance, Jesse was born to loving and devoted parents who work their own farm. Something different is the fact that the occupation of consort has been around for a century and is an almost respected profession; It’s just that nobody would ever think of calling a consort their partner. That is until 29yo Jesse and 37yo Ash meet. Ash needs an assistant and Jesse needs extra income to remain a medical student. What they did not expect were the fireworks in their relationship. Totally love the ending!
This book was wonderful! I connected with Jesse and Ash immediately. I will admit that there were moments when I expected the proverbial “other shoe to fall” which would have prevented our couple from finding their HEA. If you like well told original stories with lots of spice, passion, and romance, you will want to read this book. There were poignant, sad and happy moments as well. I found myself just simply smiling as I read some portions of this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of it through Gay Romance Reviews.

Jesse, a medical student, is looking for a part-time job he can fit around his demanding university classes and the only thing he can find that is both flexible and well-paid is the position of personal assistant to a consort (escort). It will surprise no-one (given the cute cover and the fact that I rarely read sad books) that they fall in love.
What I really liked about the story is that is actually more based on emotion than just physicality. The relationship itself actually develops quite slowly and is full of (self-)doubt, sweet caring and looking out for each other. Despite the shortness it spans quite a long time. The setting is vaguely futuristic but I would not say enough to classify it as scifi.

It is a really sweet story with introspective characters, a bit of an age gap and of course the issue of Ash's job, which he does not want to give up, and its compatibility with a loving relationship at its heart.
At one or two points I might have liked the story to be a bit longer. To have a bit more detail on how their relationship works and maybe a few more interactions in between the time jumps to give the characters even more depth, or rather breadth, than is possible in the novella format.

I gave it like 4.25⭐⭐⭐⭐🌠

I received a copy for free in an exchange for an honest review.

A surprisingly low angst story for the most part. Lots of spicy scenes, as indicated in the title. Ash & Jesse form a fast friendship that easily grows into more.
The story's timeline jumps ahead a few months at a time throughout the latter half of the book. We're given the insight into Ash & Jesse's lives as they continue their relationship amongst their busy schedules.
After the stressful turning point of the story, there's some short term tension between the MCs until they step back and communicate their trepidations.
The wonderful surprise at the end brings some light happy tears, and the men are given a beautiful happily ever after in their epilogue.

An unconventional love story, both MCs are incredibly mature and know themselves enough to ensure communication never wavers. Many cute moments mixed in with the spicy scenes, and all friends and family add another special element to the story.

Definitely take the time to dive into this story if you're good with the unconventional style and can handle some minor on page assault (not between MCs).

I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

4.25⭐️

I went into this book with little to no expectations. And boy was I rewarded for it. This was one of the sweetest, well written books I have read this year. If there is a negative for me it is that it wasn't longer.

This book is about a consort (sex worker) and his assistant and how they come to be colleagues then friends and finally lovers. While being a consort is legally recognized and accepted socially, there is still a stigma attached when it comes to personal relations with one. That was handles well as an external conflict in the book. Both Ash and Jesse have their own hang ups but never about how they feel for each other. I seem to have a thing for romances where the communication is key and is done well between partners and this book had it after a brief moment where neither of them communicate to each other their fears. I liked that Jesse was able to delineate their personal and professional lives and wasn't jealous when Ash carried on his work while they were together. While it might be rare in real life I appreciated seeing it on paper.

This was a cute, low to mid angst read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Jesse is the literal definition of golden retriever😊 he’s so supportive and just an all around happy person. The setting of this book is really interesting. How marriage and staying with a one partner is sort of archaic. It’s more of a norm to have multiple relationships throughout one’s life rather than look for “the one”. It made Jesse and Ash’s love seem even more unique and something to cherish. I liked that ash kept working even after they became a couple. Often times books with a MC who is a sex worker leave that job once the relationship starts and I was glad this one wasn’t one of them. Ash needed to stay with his job I think for the sake of their relationship because it proved his doubts wrong. Jesse can and will love him while he’s a consort.

The only thing I didn’t really like was the breakup scene. The break up seemed so unnecessary especially since nothing really happens because of it. They get back together and have sex for the first time. But the problems and issues that caused the breakup were never really flushed out and discussed during their rekindling.

This was a sweet story with loads of steam - given what Ash does for a living steam was a given - but it was sweet as well. Ash and Jesse live very different lives. Jesse grew up on a farm with an intact family that is close and loving and he is studying to be a doctor. Ash is a consort without strong family ties and he has made his way in life mostly on his own. Ash is caring in his own way to his clients and when he hires Jesse, who is in need of a part time job to make ends meet, he gets more than just help at work. He gets a friend, he gets someone who is interested in him as a person and also as a man and who does not judge but embraces him because he is a good person at his root. The pace of their relationship is a good one and they find a way to fit into one another's lives as they are - no major changes needed but adjustments made that make sense for each of them individually. I liked the tone of this book as well. Acceptance, love and finding a good fit with a partner who values you for who you are.

story of Ash and Jesse

This is a falling for your boss romance, featuring Ash and Jesse, and is and standalone.

Ash is a professional consort and is looking for a new assistant. Jesse is studying to be a doctor and is looking for a higher paying job to help make ends meet while he studies, can anyone else say meet cute?

This is a very interesting read. There are elements which set it apart for me, from the current state of the world, how relationships are seen, to professional consorts being a mainstream thing. It put this book almost in a parallel world for me.

I really liked the relationship development of Jesse and Ash, and how Jesse supported Ash in his career and there was absolutely no jealously about what he did. Their spicy times were full of tenderness and the intimate moments they had enhanced their relationship. Loved Jesse’s family and how the embraced Ash.

It was pretty low angst but there is one scene that could be a sensitive topic, so read TWs. I read this in one sitting, it just kind of gripped me and I needed to see what happened.

I was given the book Consorting with Romance as an ARC. When I started this book I was expecting it to go a certain way. I found myself pleasantly surprised when it was nothing at all like expected.

This story follows two individuals Jesse and Ash. It takes place after WWIII, and being a Consort has become a respectable employment. Jesse is a country farm worker that came to the city to become a doctor. Ash is a respectable consort. Jesse’s family was unable to give him enough to live. He need’s to find employment to cover the rest of his expenses, and become’s Ash assistant. This starts as a budding romance that develops over time (I personally think that it was love at first sight for both Ash and Jesse). They both end up happily ever after by the end of the book.

I found this book to a sweet short read. It made me laugh and smile, and cheer when the character’s got together. I give it a 5 star rating. I am looking forward to reading more Rayne Hawthorne in the future.

Wonderful story. Ash works as a consort. He tells himself he is content with his life with no friends and no possibility of romance. Jesse, comes from a loving supportive inclusive family of farmers. He decided he wanted to go to medical school. His family saves their money and sends him off with tuition and living expenses. He takes a job as Ash's assistant to supplement his living expenses. They notice each other as men and commit to a professional relationship. The author does an amazing job laying out the challenges in the escort business and the people who surround them. Ash's history exposes his vulnerbilities and makes us wnat to hold him and show him love. Their journey, their challenges, their understanding their conflicts make an enthralling story. I love Ash and Jesse and Jesse's incredible family. There are some surprises that we can't let go. Well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Such a cute MM romance which is not what I thought I’d get with this book, as the title led me to believe I was getting a raunchy smutty book, but this was actually a very sweet story about a country boy and love in the city. I was drawn to the book via the cover, with the stunning illustration, and the story of falling in love with a sex worker not something that is typical in the contemporary MM romance. The poetic wording further drew me in, with the hurt/comfort storyline. This story is low in angst, but high in comfort. The way Jesse was just accepting of all of Ash is really sweet. Read this book for boss/employee forbidden romance, slow burn, and found family.

I’ll leave you with a highlighted quote I enjoyed from the book.

“As the dark void in which only pleasure exists slowly faded and reality settled back around us, I realized we had both been forever changed by this night. We belonged to one another completely.”

This type of book is not entirely new to me I’ve read books along similar lines about p*rn stars, adult entertainers, cam boys but consorts were new to me. Rayne does a wonderful job explaining what this is and how there’s rules, guidelines and contracts. Ash and Jesse couldn’t be more opposite, Jesse grew up on his family’s farm with his loving and supportive family where Ash had to grow up quite quickly after the death of his father to start raising his sister. Ash accepted years ago that dating and love weren’t meant for him, that no one could possibly want him after what he does with clients all day. Enter Jessie, a broke med student looking for a job, what he got when he entered into Ash’s work apartment was vastly more than a job, it was a life, a home. This is a cute story about opposites that attract, found family, and finding yourself.
