Angel of Death.
Black market magic.
When you’re Ashira Cohen, smart is the new kickass.

When Ash is hired to solve her first murder, it seems like a perfectly normal, open-and-shut case of family feuds and bad blood. Until Ash discovers an evil magical artifact and her lead suspect is of the winged, white-robed, celestial variety. As if that weren't bad enough, if she can't find the perpetrator quickly, fourteen vials of lethal, ghostly magic will be sold to the highest bidder.

Her quest to figure out her Jezebel powers and find the shadowy organization responsible for stripping teens of their magic isn't going any smoother, either. Can't a girl just pursue her dream career without getting caught up in a mysterious destiny or playing a dangerous Sherlock-Moriarty game with her annoyingly hot nemesis?

But when Ash accidentally crosses the cunning and deadly Queen of Hearts, ruler of the magic black market, all those cases may go unresolved.

Permanently.

With the clock ticking, it’ll take all of Ash’s intelligence to survive with her moral center–and her head–intact.

The game is afoot and failure is not an option.

Deborah Wilde is a global wanderer and hopeless romantic. After twelve years as a screenwriter, she was also a total cynic with a broken edit button, so, she jumped ship, started writing funny, sexy, urban fantasy and paranormal women’s fiction books, and never looked back.

She loves writing smart, flawed, wisecracking women who can solve a mystery, kick supernatural butt, banter with hot men, and still make time for their best female friend, because those were the women she grew up around and admired. Granted, her grandmother never had to kill a demon at her weekly friend lunches, but Deborah is pretty sure she could have.

she/her

Smart (ass) heroines. Epic magic. Red-hot romance.

Death & Desire
(The Jezebel Files #2)
by Deborah Wilde
This was pretty good. Lots of great fantasy mixed with crazy characters, humor, snarky dialogue, and a good imagination! Sexy hot guy, snarky PI, an angel feather that has a strange magical attraction attached to it, lots of rivalries between magic users and normal folks. Very entertaining! Giggled more than once!

This is second in an Urban Fantasy series and as such, characters, story, and even plot carry over. It's best if you read in order.

You know most of what to expect if you've read the first. We get lots of progress on all the relevant fronts: relationship, overarching story, worldbuilding. I particularly liked the progress with Ash's relationship with Levi. This one is slightly better than the first because the plot held together very well and the back and forth with Levi was more coherent and directional (i.e. forward progress made in them trusting each other).

I very nearly abandoned the ending (seriously, at about 93%) because I feared where it would go (mainly with a break in that hard-won trust with Levi). But I really liked that part once I had steeled myself for it. Indeed, the resolution would have been outstanding if the author had resisted the temptation for a cheap foreshadow in the last sentence.

So this ends up a strong four stars. I'm not sure I'll continue the series, even so. It's a harsh world and the author doesn't shy from the darker corners. So I have to be in a mood even more particular than my general UF craving.

A note about Steamy: There are a couple explicit sex scenes and they're long and detailed enough to push this to the middle of my steam tolerance. They're kind of extraneous and I think the last one is downright gratuitous (I skimmed it mercilessly).

*sigh*. I really like many parts of this series. It’s just that the few parts I don’t like, I don’t like a LOT.

I thoroughly enjoy Ashira’s character. I love her drive, her dive in and find a way attitude. I love her dedication to those she cares about and her snarky attitude. I also really enjoy the fun writing style and the overall world and storylines.

I really don’t like the constant antagonism, STILL, between Ahsira and Levi. I love that they are (ever so) slowly developing an actual friendship. BUT I hate that the only type of relationship shown is that constant and often mean antagonistic by-play between the two. It’s constant nastiness, then sudden sex, and even then, they continue to snipe at each other. It would be so much more believable if, by this point, all that snarkiness could be used in a more playful way and readers could see some type of normal and friendly interaction, as well… I just really prefer some nice conversations in order to believe or even like the growing romance(?… Is just sex considered romance?).

And in this story there were numerous threads that were left hanging or are convoluted. It was stated in the first book that the tattoo artist was able to get a new line on her tattoo before he was killed. In this installment her magic is wonky but that previous fact is never mentioned again. Also, the Queen totally reneges on her deal with Ashira by changing the parameters previously agreed upon numerous times, yet Ashira buckles, then insists that the Queen is living up to her bargains… huh?

See? It’s stuff like that that drives me crazy and keeps me from truly enjoying an otherwise awesome UF series. But, just like with the last book, I keep hoping that things will get better, the romance will actually start acting like a romance and the weird and confusing glitches will smooth out if I just read one more book… Maybe, maybe not.

Mamma mia.

On ignore encore pourquoi.

Things are getting dangerously exciting in this new installment.
We have a new mystery that almost doesn’t make sense, the powers of the city are on the verge of clashing with each other, tension is running high for Asherah and her plans...add in her complicated relationship with Levi and you have a ticking bomb.
All in all this is another fun, emotionally charged installment in this series, I predict the next book will be full of dramatic revelations and emotional drama (I’m beginning to think this is kind of a staple for this author 😂).

You know that feeling when you're living inside a phenomenal book and you have all the feels for the characters and then you finish and you look around yourself and the world is exactly the same which is so disappointing because you feel like you've been to Hell and back and you're elated but also a little bit destroyed and why the heck do you have to go to work and walk the dogs and prune the rosebush when there's so many more important things to worry about -- like Ash and her mom and the situation with the feather and Chariot and Priya and Levi?

That's this book.

It is breathtakingly perfect.

It continues essentially from where the first left off, so reading in order is important, and it's completely captivating with a new immediate book goal (solving the issue of an attempted murder with a feather), while also deepening the REAL reasons I'm reading -- Ash's relationships with supporting characters and the mystery of her father's disappearance.

Side note: I've really enjoyed the relationship between Ash & Levi. I've not read anything like it in any urban fantasy, when the typical trope is that the heroine is too busy/messed up/hurt to give our hero the time of day. Pretty much everything about this series is refreshing, and I appreciate that their relationship is, too.

Seriously sad

I loved the first book and was really looking forward to the second installment. I was left feeling completely underwhelmed and frustrated.

The main character’s dependence on fixing the relationship with her mother does not ring true and feels completely juvenile and pathetic. She calls her mom by her first name and has repeatedly led the reader to believe that they don’t have a good relationship. And yet she still crawls back to her when the relationship is clearly doomed and dragging. It literally ruined the whole series for me.

I loved the main character’s snark and attitude. She’s intelligent and quick. She rolls with the punches and is a ninja at multitasking. But her issues with the love interest are also strained. It feels like the author is forcing the two characters to not get officially together yet unnaturally. Once again, pathetic. I get that she’s emotionally damaged and needs to work on it. So WORK on it. It’s disgusting the way the characters stagnate in their own issues instead of learning and growing. Completely unrealistic and unrelateable.

I actually skipped huge sections of the book in order to get through it and legitimately don’t feel like I missed any part of the story. Sad.

DNF at 30%

I really liked the first book in this series and I was excited to read Death & Desire. Unfortunatelly it just isn't holding my attention. Maybe because it's been a while since I read Blood & Ash and I've forgotten a few things about the characters and the universe this story is set in and I'm now feeling a bit lost while reading this one. So I'm shelving this one as DNF for now but might return to it at some other time.. or not.

My favorite snarky, badass is back! Ash is irreverent, feisty, and I can’t get enough of her and the rest of the gang. In book two of the Jezebel Files we learn more about the Jezebels. We get some Ash and Levi sexy time and so much more. Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Hello Gemmies! I have an exciting book review to share with you today. Death & Desire by Deborah Wilde is a super fun and delightful read. The second book in the Jezebel Files series, this book is part gritty crime noir, part paranormal drama, and part romantic comedy. With influences from Jewish religion and mythology this series feels fresh and new.

Death & Desire picks up right after the events in Blood & Ash, and is full of twists, turns, action, magic, and monsters. The contemporary Vancouver setting made the world building feel very realistic. I cannot express enough how much I love this world and its characters. I am tearing through the series and am fully invested in the series outcome. The plot is well done and builds on the plot from Blood & Ash but with higher stakes. There are mysteries to be solved, black market magic, teens to save, sexy mob bosses, and an evil corporate conglomerate to take down. You will stay up reading this one all night long. Trigger warning: this is an adult book as such there is adult language and a few sexually explicit scenes.

Death & Desire is a great sophomore novel and a well written character driven story with a diverse cast of characters that I find fun, dynamic, and complex. Ashira Cohen is the best protagonist. She's super sarcastic, snarky, bold, smart, headstrong (sometimes too much), and just plain old awesome. Pria remains the the world's best BFF. I also love the continued sexual tension between Levi and Ashira. They are the best together and I just want it to work out with them. What makes this whole paranormal romance series special is the fact that its not porn on paper. Yes there are sexy scenes sprinkled in, but there is a really good story with loads of action.

Death & Desire is narrated by one person Hollie Jackson. Hollie does a fantastic job of voicing each character. She is able to provide each with a distinct voice and personality. This is especially true with Ashira who needed a super sarcastic tone to make her character's quirky humor come through. Each person felt authentic, and through Hollie's narration I experienced several laugh out loud moments. The narration is done at a great pace, it never feels too slow or too fast. This was a joy to listen to and I can't wait to read more stories in this series!

If you are a fan of snarky heroine's, noir thrillers, sexy scenes, and magic, then go read this book! This gem published by Te Da Media is available for purchase from all major booksellers. I give Death & Desire 4 out of 5 gems. Happy Reading!

Book-specific: This delves a little deeper into Ash's world and gets deeper into the mystery of the Jezebel magic, but not gonna lie it was her relationship with Levi that kept me invested. I really enjoyed it.

Series Overview: Now, I’ve torn through her books like a storm through a paper tablecloth so I can definitely say I like Ms. Wilde’s writing style and that this particular series is more focused on the relationship/romance between Levi and Ashira than the first. I like that this features a diverse set of characters who live in Vancouver and the mythology of the magic is slightly different than the other series I’ve read from Ms. Wilde. Also, the overarching storyline regarding Ash’s particular magic being designed to take down a nebulous criminal cabal intent on gaining immortality is strong enough to carry through each book, but even if there’s a mild cliffhanger in each, you feel satisfied that each book has a beginning, middle and end. I really liked it.

I haven't been in a good frame of mind and I have to say that it took this book to at least keep me out of it for a while.
I love Deb's storytelling and how she weaves in a perfect balance between urban fantasy mystery and kick ass romance. Ash is a tough cookie, a badass on her own rights and I really appreciate how honest she is to herself (as much as she can at least) about her feelings for Levi. and OMG Levi is everything and more. I really appreciate how honest they are to each other and what they are feeling and how much they are slowly building a strong bond and connection. It's really the best thing ever.
And while my hopes for Miles and The Pink Menace didn't pan through, I'm so excited to read what comes next!

3.75.

I didn't like this as much as the first. The wedding plot didn't interest me much and Ash is beginning tobgwt on my nerves a bit. I'm mainly reading for Ash and Levi, as I love then together, and there were some developments in the right direction, but I wish Ash was different towards him and gave him more of a chance. There seems o be an imbalance in the give and take with them and feels a bit like Ash takes advantage of him.

The kareoke scene was the best, though!

Either way, I'll definitely be reading the next one.

*Thoughts*

Death & Desire is the second installment in author Deborah Wilde's The Jezebel Files. 28 year old Ashira Cohen is the main protagonist for this series. She is a private investigator with her own PI firm called Cohen Investigations. She is listed as being Mundane (without magic) but readers know that is no longer true. She is a Nefresh with the ability to destroy all magic around her that was released back in the 1600's by the Ten tribes of Israel. Ash is walking a tightrope between the two worlds. She has to deal with the lure from all the magic around her, just waiting to be sucked up like a milkshake.

Once again, I don't have time for a proper review. So, I'm giving you this because it's totally Ash and that scene in particular, made me giggle/snort.

This series is exactly as described, it's snarky. As. fuck. I'm so glad I found Deborah Wilde's The Jezebel Files. I needed a new, snarky, urban fantasy heroine in my life.

Narration: Hollie Jackson
Series: Complete

I still have the same problems that I had with the first installment: lack of good romance and too dramatic narration. I don't think the story itself it bad but I'm just not that interested and emotionally involved 🤷‍♀️ Not sure if I will start the next one.

This series would be so much more enjoyable if the author had taken just little bit of to explain the magic system. She could have put it in the front or the back of the book. Also, if she had explained what happened to cause people to be so intolerant of those who have magic, no matter the type of how little power they have.

This series is frustrating because I love Ash as a character she has so much potential and the pink menace is an awesome side kick... Levi is my biggest problem his character just sets off the whole series for me I only got halfway through this story it’s just all over the place and doesn’t seem to do Ash justice in making her shine, I find Levi to be a complete douchnozzel which is depressing because I honestly thought he would be a good partner for her but he’s really not it always makes me feel like he is trying to show Ash she is worthless but doing it with a smile it’s just all kinds of wrong and honestly Ash deserves better, she deserves someone who has her back unconditionally, someone who can help her get past her make trust issues not enforce them and make her walks taller and that’s all Levi seems to do... I guess I was hoping he would turn around in book 2 but halfway through I could see that just wasn’t going to happen and I just can’t continue reading a book that depresses me even if I love the main character.

When the Queen of Hearts suggests you as a PI to solve a murder case, you may wonder what the hell you've just gotten yourself into. Spoiler alert: it ain't anything good, especially when it involves a magical artefact that makes everyone a little crazier than usual!

Trying to solve a murder so Ash can get the vials with smudges back while trying to find more intel on Chariot, on the Jezebel team and on the Queen of Hearts herself isn't really going all that well for her. Add to that the very complicated thing she has with Levi (don't dare call it a relationship of any kind), yeah... really not going well.

Worldbuilding was great! I think what I liked the most was discovering all the different places/aspects of Hedon. I hope we get to see even more of it in the following instalments. As always, scenes and environments were clear and detailed enough to just go ahead and enjoy the story and not worry where the hell Ash is now.

Character development was superb! There were a lot of fears, doubts, cravings etc going on and it all felt real. Ash has to deal with the lure from all the magic around her, just waiting to be sucked up like a milkshake. I really like that she manages to make the decisions (even if they are a lot harder) so that she can still face herself in the mirror afterwards. I mean, she does some crazy stuff, but she has a great inner guidance system going on.
As we learn more about the characters, we see more and more of who they really are, what they want in life and what they are willing to do to get there.
They all feel real and believable.

Pacing and flow were good. It slowed down a tad just after the start but before I started panicking, it picked it back up again and it was smooth sailing till the end.

The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors and yes, there is sex described (if that is important to you).

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I loved it! All the twists and turns (and there are many) keeps you on your toes and then there is Levi... *sigh* :D
Snarky humor, a heroine that is as flawed as all of us and deals with it her own way, action à volonté and a dash of romance. The perfect mixture for success!
